He was the “King of Cool,” an Italian American star whose casual magnetism and incomparable voice defined the Rat Pack style that influenced generations of American popular culture. Now, Dean Martin's hometown is seeking to honor him for all time with a larger-than-life statue at the heart of this once-bustling community. In this week's episode, we are exploring the life and legacy of Steubenville, Ohio's favorite son through the eyes of Gerald Ravasio, the chairman of the committee that is seeking to construct this well-deserved monument to a unique Italian American legend. Gerald helps us uncover Dino Paul Crocetti's humble beginnings, from his Italian-speaking childhood to the bullying that drove him away from school and into the underground nightclubs and casinos that earned Steubenville the sobriquet “Little Chicago." We'll also gain insight into Dean Martin, the dedicated Italian American who never forgot his hometown, and kept himself involved in philanthropic activities to help sustain the Steubenville community even while one of the biggest stars on the planet. And we'll discover some of Steubenville's iconic Italian American fare, like pizza on the square and the meat sauce heel, while reminiscing over life in this distinctly Italian Enclave. And, if YOU want to help the Dean Martin Committee bring this dream to fruition, consider making a donation by sending checks to: Historic Fort Steuben 120 S.3rd Street Steubenville, Ohio 43952. Checks should be made payable to “Old Fort Steuben Inc.” and be sure to write “Dean Martin Statue Fund” in the memo line. You can also visit www.oldfortsteuben.com and select “donate,” then scroll down to select “Dean Martin Statue Fund.”

On November 25, 1950, one of the greatest November storms in recorded North American History blasted the eastern half of the United States and Canada with unprecedented early season snow and cold, paralyzing the region for more than a week and causing untold damage and suffering. Cold air had been scarce in the lower 48 states in November, but was building to prodigious proportions across the artic. It was unleased southward in a bitter blast that would even be extreme in the depths of winter let along November. Caused by a huge wave action high in the atmosphere in the jet stream those high-level winds plunged southward right out of the Yukon. On the eastern side of the continent the wave action cut off into a swirling ball of winds that spawned a monster storm. Known as The Great Appalachian Storm, it achieved the region's greatest sustained wind force when gales continued at many points for 12 hours or more. At coastal cities, such as Newark and Boston, single minute speeds in excess of 80 mph were registered. Peak gusts were recorded of 110 mph at Concord, NH, 108 mph at Newark, NJ, and 100 mph at Hartford, CT. Atop Mt. Washington a wind gust hit 160 mph from the SE early on the 26th. Central Park in the heart of sheltered Manhattan Island set an 80-year record with fastest mile of 70 mph. There were 34 deaths across New York State. Heavy flooding rains along coast. The snowfalls were equally as extreme almost 28” in Pittsburgh. Toronto had its greatest one-day November snowfall of a foot and in Steubenville Ohio snow piled up to a depth of more than 36” – 3 feet! Roads were blocked and roofs collapsed. Just behind the storm came some of the coldest temperature of the winter. Both Louisville, Kentucky and Nashville, Tennessee dipped to 1 below zero the earliest below zero reading on record. In Atlanta the mercury dropped to 2 above, and despite sunshine the afternoon high temperature only reached 17. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
Dr. Gerry hosts Be with the Word from a dorm at Franciscan University of Steubenville (Ohio). He explores how God is transcendent and calms the seas in our own souls. Dr. Gerry shares some of the things he's learned from Philosophy professors at Franciscan. Dr. Gerry applies the Catholic teaching that the rational soul is the form of the body to the teaching of St. Paul that we have a new identity as new creations in Christ. As a new creation we want our soul that knows and trusts in God to be in alignment with our bodies which sometimes is triggered by fear. Dr. Gerry explores how the Fall and reinforced by trauma creates a disconnect between body and soul. New therapies that are somatic (body-based) align better with Catholic philosophy.

Vocation: “A call from God to a distinctive state of life, in which the person can reach holiness.” The Second Vatican Council made it plain that there is a "Universal call to holiness in the Church." Therefore, it is precisely through living out our vocation in marriage that we find our unique path to holiness. This week we are excited to wrap up our Marriage series with an amazing guest. We were honored to talk with Alicia Hernon from the Messy Family Project out in Steubenville Ohio. She has a fiery passion for the calling of the Christian marriage and family. Alicia is a mom of 10 and has been married for 27 years to her wonderful other half, Mike Hernon. Alicia and Mike have an amazing podcast and ministry where they discuss, promote and encourage the importance of faith and family. We are so blessed to have learned so much from Alicia during this recording. Her core message is that all couples should strive for holiness not by being perfect in every situation but by growing and forgiving but most importantly by relying on God's mercy and grace. Welcome back everyone for episode 31 of the zero Analytics podcast. Today we venture back to Ohio to visit a driver who while still young in age (at least to me) has built a decent career making circles already and arguably yet to enter his prime. Currently a student in the mechanical engineering program at the university of Akron, we learn how he’s applied knowledge to his program as he’s grown as a student while at the same time leading his own student along the way in the karting genre. Already having a successful racing career by most people’s standards, it will be interesting to follow along after the show to see where he can take it from here. While we talk mostly about racing the thing that stuck out to me the most was the relationships built along the way. This podcast is about karting and racing but as most who have exited the sport know.... it’s the relationships and the memories built off the track that often times mean the most when we take a moment to reflect. I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I did.... ladies and gentlemen.... without any further adu... my friend Mr. Jared John

Carolyn Harding with Randi Pokladnik and Dustin White, both working to raise awareness and build coalitions to fight the huge plastics petrochemical hub build-up along the Ohio River, euphemistically referred as the #AppalachianStorageHub. Randi Pokladnik was born and raised in the Ohio Valley in Toronto Ohio, a small town just north of Steubenville Ohio. She has degrees in Environmental engineering, chemistry, and a masters and doctorate degrees in Environmental studies. She is a retired research chemist and educator. She writes and volunteers for Ohio Valley Environmental Coalition. Her main concerns are clean air, water and climate change and getting plastics and toxic chemicals out of our lives. Dustin White, a project coordinator with the Ohio Valley Environmental Coalition (or OVEC) which is headquartered in Huntington WV. Dustin grew up in Southern WV's “coal fields” and has roots to the area going back 11 generations. He began his work with OVEC as a volunteer and later on staff fighting Mountaintop Removal Coal Mining. In 2014, he worked to get emergency relief to communities impacted by the WV Water Crisis when the petrochemical company, MCHM burst from its holding tank above the public water intake in Charleston, WV, leaving 300,000 residents in 9 counties without water for weeks. Now, he works on what is the newest threat to Appalachia's health, safety, and vitality – a proposed petrochemical mega-complex, known as the Appalachian Storage and Trading Hub, in the upper Ohio River Valley, that would impact air quality and threaten the drinking water of over 5 million people all for the primary purpose of manufacturing new single use plastics. https://ohvec.org/ http://www.peopleoverpetro.org/ GrassRoot Ohio w/ Carolyn Harding - Conversations with every-day people, working on important issues here in Columbus and all around Ohio!
