After growing up with severe anxiety and firsthand experiencing the lack of mental health resources in schools, Tessa (she/her) founded Upstream Education to ensure teachers have the tools to help their students manage anxiety and foster well-being. She received a B.S. in Social Entrepreneurship from the Watson Institute at Lynn University. Tessa also holds a 200 hour yoga teacher certificate from Strala Yoga. In 2016, Tessa won the Denver Public Schools Imaginarium Innovation Lab's Design Challenge for her idea to create a program of bite-sized, Tier 1 Mental Health tools for high school students. The following year, her first book, I Am Tessa, was published by One Idea Press. She often speaks on the topics of adolescent mental health, social entrepreneurship, and teacher professional development for organizations including Teach For America, Denver Public Schools, the Council of School Supervisors and Administrators, and the University of Notre Dame. In 2021, Tessa delivered her first TEDx talk called “The Power of 5 Minutes for Youth Mental Health.” Tessa is a Forbes 30 Under 30 honoree and 2024 HopeLab Young Innovator in Behavioral Health awardee. In her spare time, Tessa loves to explore Colorado with her husband. She lives in Boulder.About Upstream equips students with the ability to "name and tame" their stress. We start with the science of stress, specifically how our brains and bodies are biologically predisposed to respond to stress through the fight, flight, or freeze response. After students can "name" their stress, Upstream gives them a variety of concrete tools to "tame" that stress. Our tools are rooted in the practices of mindfulness, positive psychology, and positive self-talk.Links:https://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/volumes/73/su/su7304a6.htmhttps://www.nimh.nih.gov/news/science-news/2024/cognitive-behavioral-therapy-alters-brain-activity-in-children-with-anxietyhttps://ccf.georgetown.edu/2022/03/24/research-update-childrens-anxiety-and-depression-on-the-rise/https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC9894765/https://www.cdc.gov/childrensmentalhealth/features/anxiety-depression-children.htmlhttps://www.cdc.gov/childrensmentalhealth/data.htmlhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EKB7GZ0KAwohttps://www.coursehero.com/file/194915685/RA-Final-Rough-Draft/ Hosted on Acast. "I bet I can figure out everything you're going to read next year." Zibby Owens points out with her debut novel Blank how rigged the publishing industry is.Zibby's debut novel Blank is so fun to read, and I had a blast reading it, but it also has a massively cool message, like The Emperor's New Clothes cool. The main character, celebrated author, Pippa Jones has a wild idea to publish a book with nothing in it, partly because her original idea was taken by another author and her deadline was fast approaching, and partly because she wants to point out some of the down and dirty sides of the publishing industry and how readers are fed all the books they think they are choosing. Zibby is a huge champion of authors, and encourager of readers, and a rebel with a good cause. You can grab your copy of Blank and get involved with all things Zibby here.https://www.zibbyowens.comDownload the STRALA YOGA apphttp://www.stralahome.comhttps://apple.co/3h9zgew2024 In-Person & Tour Schedulehttps://stralayoga.com/I LOVE hearing from you!Leave me a voicemail https://www.tarastiles.com/Instagram https://www.instagram.com/tarastiles Hosted on Acast. I'm joined by dear friend Tara Stiles. She was one of the first guests of the Whole & Unleashed podcast. It's been a few years since her episode and I thought it would be fun to catch up with her and also weave in some Human Design elements. She graciously let me do a mini-dive on her Human Design chart a few months ago on IG live. You can watch the conversation here. But I also wanted to expand a little bit more on that. To show how she's thriving, creating a life that is authentic and aligned to her. Tara is a 3/6 emotional projector. Who's about to come “off the roof” she's moving towards her 3rd phase of her 6th line and ready to engage with her community in many new ways. There's a lot of disempowering information out there about projectors and how “little energy” we have. There's the belief that having a defined Sacral or that being a Manifestor will mean that all our dreams come true or with more ease. But the thing is, everyone has challenges and different needs. No matter your type, we have the power to take care of ourselves and create the life we want. Just different approaches for different energetic needs. In this episode we talked about: The magic of her 17-62 Channel of Acceptance shining through Strala Yoga. The way she's able to create a practice that sensitizes us to our needs, to how we're feeling and moving from that centre. Her experience with her emotional authority and how feelings guide her. Along with how her mental definition supports her process because remember, the mind is not bad! It's so helpful when we're able to create space for both our intuition and mind to work together. Community and how she's built a life, a business rooted in deep intentional connections (her 49-19 Channel of Synthesis beautiful expressed) Her pull to share her own stories and other people's stories (Her 33-13 Channel of Prodigal!) How she's stayed grounded in her truth as she stood up for abuse in the yoga world and her efforts in creating a more approachable, accessible yoga through Strala I've always admired how Tara is able to move, create in a way that is sustainable and expansive. Taking care of herself, following her heart and invitations/opportunities coming along.
Tara Stiles, co-founder of Strala Yoga, returns to compare notes with J about the current state of the yoga world. They discuss the ray of humanity that brought them back together, letting go of brick and mortar spaces, online trends moving from brands to influence, opening up the conversations around spirituality, connecting across divides, gentle yoga becoming trauma informed, training the algorithms to curate your internet experience, the appropriate use of touch, and reacclimating to in person teaching and co-regulating together. This week, Gemma sits down with Tara Stiles, affectionately called the “yoga rebel,” to discuss how to feel good physically and emotionally and manage distractions in a hyper-connected world. BONUS guided breathing exercise! Stiles advocates for inclusivity in her practice, asserting that yoga exists within us all, and that it works best “when it feels like you.” Finding moments to reconnect with our breath, identifying where and when our energy increases, deriving motivation from inspiration, and building habits to reduce tension and rigidity can help us feel our best and positively impact the communities around us. She is a wellness expert, bestselling author, and the founder of Strala Yoga in NYC where she serves clients including Deepak Chopra and Jane Fonda. Our guest today, Tara Stiles, first discovered yoga in New York while training to be a dancer. In our conversation, Tara shares how that first yoga class ignited her curiosity, and how she gradually made the transition from hustling in New York and being an aspiring dancer, to starting her own yoga studio, called Stråla, with her husband, Mike. We spend some time talking about the yoga scene at the time (including the pushback she received for diverging from established methods of teaching), and why she was determined to make yoga accessible to anyone eager to learn. Tuning in you'll hear how Tara went from teaching yoga in Central Park to starting her studio and flying around the world for a dizzying array of opportunities. She reveals feeling overwhelmed at this time, the effect it had on her marriage, and how she ultimately realized that she needed to slow down. We also discussed Tara's book Clean Mind, Clean Body: A 28-Day Plan for Physical, Mental, and Spiritual Self-Care, and what it was like writing it. As we wrap up, Tara shares the most important things she's learned about life, entrepreneurship, and marriage over the course of her life and career. Life is rarely simple (or straightforward), and no matter how much you plan, it never seems to go quite as expected. Tune in to learn about Tara's fascinating life journey and what she has learned from it!

In today's episode, I spoke with Tara Stiles, the founder of Strala Yoga, a revolutionary approach to being, moving, and healing. Strala Yoga is not like other styles of yoga. Strala combines the principles of tai-chi with yoga and delivers an easy-going flow, that allows you to sync with your breath, tune inwards, really listen to your body, and ultimately, to become good friends with yourself. Finally, there's a style of yoga that really feels like you. In Strala, the focus isn't on getting the alignment of the pose just right. Instead, poses are thought of as waypoints to move and flow through. This way of practicing yoga shifts your attention from how the pose looks to how you feel as you're moving and breathing.Tara Stiles was private yoga teacher to Deepak Chopra, walked the red carpet with Jane Fonda, and along with her husband, Mike Taylor, Tara has devoted herself to making yoga accessible for everyone. Strala is all about slowing down, softening, moving with your breath, and practicing being kind to yourself, on and off the mat. There's no pretentiousness, no strict rules or codes of dress. Strala is open to everyone. In our conversation, we spoke about how Strala Yoga was born, where the philosophy came from, and how the Strala community has developed and grown over the years. I feel really lucky that my introduction into the world of yoga was through Tara's Strala Yoga videos, and I hope that after hearing today's conversation, you'll invite a bit of Strala Magic into your own lives as well. So without further ado, here's my conversation with Tara Stiles.@YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@TheBiggerPicturePodcast@Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/biggerpicturepodbyroni/@Website: https://thebiggerpicturepod.com/ This is a public episode.
