The mindbodygreen Podcast

With estimates that around 12,000 million metric tons of plastic will be in landfills or in our environment by 2050, it's easy to feel like this overwhelming issue is out of our control, but the change actually starts with us as the consumers. You may know Bonnie Wright better as Ginny Weasley from the Harry Potter films, but she's much more. Bonnie is an environmental activist and advocate for eliminating single-use plastics, a film director, producer, and screenwriter. Colleen Wachob, co-CEO at mindbodygreen, sat down with Bonnie on the mbg podcast to discuss how she became passionate about reducing her impact on the environment and the simple ways she's cut down on plastic in her life. Growing up, Bonnie spent time on the coast of England with her family and came to love the ocean. She gained inspiration from her surroundings and developed an understanding of nature's cycles. Over time she's seen a cultural shift toward convenience and the subsequent negative impact on the environment. As a surfer who spends a lot of time on the water in California, Bonnie sees the amount of plastic pollution floating in the water and on the beaches. With all of this, she's made it a priority to reduce her plastic consumption. Here are some of the strides she's made that you may want to incorporate into your life.  Bonnie emphasizes that these changes did not happen overnight and recommends starting with one category such as beauty products or food containers and then moving to the next. "Even if your choice seems so small and insignificant, it does all connect," she explained. If you're feeling stuck with where to begin, she suggests noticing what self-limiting beliefs may be holding you back. Perhaps you feel like you're not good enough to remember to bring your own water bottle? These are normal ways to feel and are merely thought patterns that have been ingrained in us. To break through some of these, acknowledge that they are thoughts you can overcome and you are more than capable of making choices that support you and the environment.

This is the most exciting time of year, and that’s not just because of the holidays. It’s that time in which we roll up our sleeves, consult our experts, and predict the 11 biggest wellness trends for 2019. In this special edition episode of the mbgpodcast, our founder and CEO, Jason Wachob, and co-founder and chief brand officer, Colleen Wachob, discuss how we zeroed in on these trends, plus their five favorites to watch out for in the new year. They talk about a continued sleep revolution with innovations for blue light disruptions, why the endocannabinoid system is the new microbiome, and which unexpected part of the grocery store is about to be your go-to. Jason and Colleen also explain the making of the wellness trends, a year-long process which Jason calls “a blend of art and science.” We sort through industry data, conduct interviews with mbg collective members, and attend global trade shows, all to scope out the next big product, ingredient, or practice. Basically, if it’s good for you, we’re investigating. Our annual wellness trends have predicted some of the biggest moves in the wellness world. In 2015, for example, we talked about an increase in supplement startups, then in 2017, we predicted a rise in the ketogenic diet. And last year we called the intermittent fasting trend and that big food brands would focus on acquiring health-focused companies. This week we’re turning the microphone on two of our favorite podcast hosts to hear THEIR story, for a change. You’ll get a peek inside the world of two of the most influential members of the wellness world—they bring us the news, the ideas, and the experts through their platform, and they walk the walk every day—they don’t even aim for work-life balance, it’s all about work-life integration for them. After a grueling career in finance, Jason dreamed of going out on his own, but his startup cookie crumbled when he realized he didn’t want to be in the CPG food world after a brief stint in the snack biz. Cookies, to be exact.  A college athlete and a fellow member of the extra-long jeans club, he suffered from a variety of physical ailments but traditional medicine failed him. His aha moment was when his health status changed from the walls of the Palm Steakhouse to the Walking Yogi of San Francisco Colleen was a forward mover in her own right—a California girl who was born to be active, she wore leggings on the subway when one did not wear leggings on the subway. It all started with one guy in a room, writing content. This labor of love didn’t happen overnight, but within a few years grew to 10M monthly views. Did we mention this one guy LOVES coffee? The mindbodygreen ethos is about bringing content to their ginormous community by working selectively with influencers and experts who come from a place of real authority and credibility, not just the insta-famous. They believe they're a wellness brand that just happened to get their start in media. Speaking of "wellness"--there's a lot about that word that rubs them the wrong way. Tune in to find out! They live together, they work together, they drink margaritas together and they’re even invited to each other’s fantasy dinner party. #couplegoals These two have relationships with their contributors that run deep—they often vacation with @tarastiles and @bewell’s Dr Lipman. Guess no one’s dancing on the bar on that trip…. Zoe tried hard to pry it out of them, but they were excitedly discreet about some product plans coming in January—it’s definitely not granola. We’ll drink to that, if anyone’s offering.    www.mindbodygreen.com @mindbodygreen @jasonwachob @colleenwachob

This special edition episode is a reflection on mindbodygreen's 2018 wellness trends! Every year in December, we release a report of our biggest trends and predictions for next year, and this time we have a sneak peek into the thought process behind the trends with our founder and CEO, Jason Wachob, along with co-founder and chief brand officer, Colleen Wachob. "It is a really exciting time to be in wellness," Jason said, as he reflected on mbg's track record for setting and predicting trends. In 2015, we were one of the first to call out supplement startups and telomeres as a trend. Two years ago in 2016, we accurately predicted guac would become a healthy staple, wellness tourism would go mainstream, and foretold the wellness world's now long-standing obsession with succulents. Last year, we reported that women's spaces and circles would grow, and from a food standpoint, we pegged personalized nutrition, medicinal mushrooms, and ketosis as wellness trends too. In this special, abbreviated episode, Jason and Colleen discuss four of our biggest and buzziest trends this year, and they're asking the questions no one else wants to ask: Will technology be the next tobacco? And when will we as consumers start to move the needle for big tech, the same way we did this year with big food? Healthy food startups are being acquired left and right—they discuss why that's a really good thing. In that vein, accessibility in wellness is another trending theme that resonates strongly with mindbodygreen's new mission. Breathwork will join meditation as a practice people use anytime, anywhere to change their energy. Similar to big food, green beauty is experiencing a surge of financial interest, acquisitions, and support from big-box retailers, who are stocking naturals now more than ever. And a question: Where will athleisure and boutique fitness go? They both are becoming more diverse and less exclusive, with at-home workouts like FlyWheel's new stationary bike and Peloton's rumored treadmill. Tune in to hear their points of view and get a behind-the-scenes look at the thinking behind these trends.
