Having walked the tightrope between justice and legal misapprehensions, Asia Scarlett-Jones joins us to unravel the complexities of family law. Her transition from a public defender to championing her own practice in downstate New York showcases a relentless pursuit to mend the chasms within the legal framework, especially when it comes to representing children and marginalized voices. Together, we dissect the often erroneous beliefs that cloud the issues of custody and equitable division of assets post-divorce, reinforcing the notion that all is fair in love and law until the gavel falls. The convoluted web of custodial battles often ensnares fathers in outdated stereotypes, but in this candid exchange, we lay bare the systemic biases that can sideline their parental rights. As we recount tales from the trenches, our shared experiences underscore the paramountcy of the children's welfare over the parents' emotional strife. In the end, it's not just about who wins but ensuring that the child's life remains as harmonious as possible through the collective effort of both parents. Our journey through the legal labyrinth wouldn't be complete without touching on the thorny issue of narcissism in the courtroom. Peeling back the layers of this contentious term, we strive to differentiate between authentic personality disorders and the emotional flares that divorce can ignite. Technology's role in smoothing the co-parenting path also makes an appearance, highlighting how proper communication tools can defuse potentially explosive situations. Do you ever gaslight yourself when you think of the narcissistic person in your life? Do you wonder if it's your fault, if they're right, if everyone else is more sane than you because you see the bad behavior and they don't? I've been dealing with real gaslighting from narcissists and people in my life for many years. But I've recently realized how I was doing it to myself! This week I had a lot of anger and after consulting with a friend, decided to do a meditation to help release some of it. I came across this wonderful meditation by Amy Lowery on Insight Timer: https://insig.ht/wSLC3oMRpHbI share about what helped me release my anger. Then, when the veil of anger was lifted, what I found behind it was a truth that I know deep in my bones. This will help you if you've ever suffered from narcissistic abuse. My favorite expert on narcissism: Dr. Ramani Durvasula with a book ("It's Not You") and a podcast ("Navigating Narcissism"), both INCREDIBLE. I also read a book recently by a therapist about narcissistic abuse recovery: Ingrid Clayton's "Believing Me." https://www.amazon.com/Believing-Me-Healing-Narcissistic-Complex/dp/B0BCSCYRLB/ref=tmm_pap_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&dib_tag=se&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.PJDSHzhZ8WZbjLV12WtrttisvMiVRXpfyI7hs-eoQZuIvpnytQos3s9XEKVXul5qIpml0fcO2jd6sBxg9mdGj6L6E56NqOtX0uM3wUwP6oqAuCxQREXt9to8ltLeNuLgGfDMuNOZX6KvbrYvwP9y8g.z8SXIRvLY905d-O4t2WaARadWfPr7b4an9sTVSRWkks&qid=1708668278&sr=8-1I hope these help you on your journey while you navigate intergenerational trauma!  Healing is possible! This chapter focuses on the challenges of mediating cases that involve narcissistic individuals, particularly in the context of legal disputes. I share insights on the nature of narcissism, emphasizing the difficulty in getting narcissists to agree or see alternative viewpoints. I discuss strategies used to manage and settle disputes involving narcissists, such as valuing their contributions and giving them a sense of power through choices. The use of praise and strategic options is highlighted as effective in dealing with their black-and-white thinking. Additionally, I touch upon the logistics of mediation in my practice, including conducting sessions virtually via Zoom and in separate rooms to facilitate the process. (00:02) Mediation in Divorce Cases Natalie Baird King discusses the benefits of mediation over litigation in family law cases, emphasizing individual empowerment and tailored solutions. Today's episode is sponsored by BetterHelp.  We made you a mixtape of some of our fave segments from our full episodes with Daniel Shaw, LCSW,  Dr. Ramani, and Dr. Natalie Feinblatt. Think of this as our Chicken Soup for the Culty Soul power-medley. We've got Dan Shaw dropping knowledge on why traumatizing narcissists are so…traumatizing. We've got Dr. Ramani on how to recover from narcissistic abuse. And we've got Dr. Natalie Feinblatt on Trauma, Addiction & Cult-Informed Therapy. It's practically a super group!  Pull up a box of tissues, and get ready for all the feels. If you've heard these chats before when they were first born as full ALBC episodes, we still think you'll get some good nuggets out of them. And yes, we love the word ‘nugget' in any form in a way that may border on problematic. We'll be sure to talk to our therapist about that.    NOTES: Daniel Shaw, LCSW  is a psychoanalyst in private practice in New York City and in Nyack, New York. He originally trained as an actor at Northwestern University and with the renowned teacher Uta Hagen in New York City, and later worked as a missionary for an Indian guru. His eventual recognition of cultic aspects of this organization led him to become an outspoken activist in support of individuals and families traumatically abused in cults. Simultaneous with leaving this group, Dan began his training in the mental health profession, becoming a faculty member and supervisor at the National Institute for the Psychotherapist in New York. His book, Traumatic Narcissism: Relational Systems of Subjugation, was published by Routledge in 2014 and was nominated for the distinguished Gradiva Award. In 2018, the International Cultic Studies Association awarded him the Margaret Thaler Singer Award for advancing the understanding of coercive persuasion and undue influence. Shaw's book Traumatic Narcissism and Recovery: Leaving the Prison of Shame and Fear will be published by Routledge in 2021. Dan joined Sarah and Nippy to share his story, drop some knowledge about the shameless ways of traumatizing narcissists, and provide insights on the recovery process. Dr. Ramani Durvasula is the author of two books on the subject: Should I Stay or Should I Go: Surviving A Relationship with a Narcissist and Don't You Know Who I Am?: How to Stay Sane in an Era of Narcissism, Entitlement, and Incivility. Her work has been featured at SXSW, TEDx, the Red Table Talk, the Today Show, and Investigation Discovery. You can also find her on her wildly popular YouTube channel where she dispenses wisdom on protecting yourself from hoovering, gaslighting and other narc trademarks. Or put her Navigating Narcissism podcast in your ears, on repeat: It's good stuff. Dr. Natalie Feinblatt is a licensed clinical psychologist in private practice in Los Angeles, California who specializes in the treatment of addiction and trauma. And one of her trauma sub-specialties is working with former cult members. She received her BA from UCSD and her Masters & Doctorate from Pepperdine University, where she wrote her doctoral dissertation on psychotherapy with former cult members and has specialized in helping them ever since. She also does EMDR, Brainspotting, and other trauma-specific therapies. She was also featured on the series finale of ‘Leah Remini: Scientology & The Aftermath.' Forgive and forget. “Can't we just let the past be in the past and move forward?” To someone who has been in a relationship with a narcissist or an extremely emotionally immature person, these concepts can have a negative impact, adding additional layers of guilt and shame to a situation already heavy with “what's wrong with me?” messages. Today, Tony covers the contrasting concepts of 'acceptance' and 'forgiveness.' Explore why the nuanced understanding of acceptance, as outlined in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), can offer a more compassionate and realistic pathway to emotional well-being than traditional notions of forgiveness. Learn why acceptance is not just about tolerating but fully embracing your emotions, allowing you to deal with life's challenges in a healthier way. Tony then demystifies the often misunderstood terms of narcissism and emotional immaturity, emphasizing the importance of personal accountability in relationships. Discover the role of 'calm, confident energy' and how it facilitates emotional differentiation, aiding in healthier interpersonal interactions. Gain insights into the science behind mindfulness and why it's crucial for emotional clarity and self-awareness. I recently got the opportunity to test myself against the insidious energy of narcissism. It's an energy I've encountered a lot in my life, from diagnosable narcissists to the much more common victim of narcissism—who has then taken on these behaviors as a defence mechanism.I include myself in that. For years I excelled at manipulation, without even realising what I was doing. Just feeling helpless and hopeless and knowing that “this is the way to act”, because that's the way I'd been shown to act.So, healing, healing, healing. And bit by bit my own behaviours shifted. But I still struggled with navigating boundaries and needs with others who were taken by this energy. By this devil. This episode is a story of how I faced this energy, but refused to play the game the way I'd been playing for years. And then something really unexpected happened…Use Your Voice

This week's episode is all about a subject familiar to many of us: self-sabotage. Whether it's the inability to stick to our health goals, leave a toxic relationship, or get that promotion, we often seem to be our own worst enemies. Self-sabotage is a spectrum of feelings, beliefs, and behaviours, but they all set us up to fail. Dr Ramani Durvasula is a clinical psychologist and Professor of Psychology at California State University, and a world-renowned expert on narcissistic personality disorder. She's written two books on the subject, Should I Stay or Should I Go and Don't You Know Who I Am. She hosts the podcast Navigating Narcissism, and posts regularly on her YouTube channel, which has over 1 million subscribers. In this conversation, we talk about relationships not with others, but with ourselves. Dr Ramani talks us through the common ways in which many of us self-sabotage, including procrastination, social comparison, taking on too much and not living in alignment with our values. She explains their links to anxiety and perfectionism and shares the practical solutions that she uses with clients to overcome them. If you've ever considered having therapy, Dr Ramani provides some useful insights about how it can work. We discuss a wide range of topics, including why so many of us stick around in toxic, unsupportive relationships, the importance of cultivating friendships and communities outside the home and not expecting our romantic partner to be all things to us. And you'll hear Dr Ramani explain a new way of thinking about our inner critic. Dr Ramani has decades of real world experience helping her clients, she is a brilliant communicator and this is a conversation full of fresh insights and practical insights that you are going to be able to implement immediately.Support the podcast and enjoy Ad-Free episodes. Realizing your partner is a narcissist or emotionally abusive and making the decision to leave can be one of the most liberating experiences of your life. But what if you're forever tied to this person because of a child you share together? What if you can take yourself out of the relationship but can't take the narcissist out of your life? Co-parenting with a highly toxic or abusive person adds a whole new dynamic to parenting and divorce. Your child needs more support than ever — and so do you as you heal. You not only have to figure out how to move forward, but you also have to learn how to handle high-conflict interactions with your ex without letting it drag you back into the old patterns that harmed you. Sarah Kamoto is a coach who specializes in helping people co-parent through high-conflict situations. After leaving the narcissistic father of her young child, she has walked this path and navigated everything from how to help your child process the unhealthy dynamics they're witnessing at the toxic parent's house to what to do when your ex tries to turn your child against you. In this episode, we dig deep into narcissistic relationships — the signs of a narcissistic relationship, why we experience grief when leaving, dating after leaving and so many questions I get asked about narcissism — plus how to thrive even when you have a high-conflict ex to contend with. Listen to discover: Common signs that you're in an emotionally abusive relationship The dynamics between narcissists and their adult children The process of grief when recognizing and leaving a narcissist Why it's counterproductive to confront a narcissist The difficulties of co-parenting with a toxic ex & how to navigate them Helping your children become emotionally healthy even with a toxic parent How to respond when your ex tries to turn your kids against you Scripts for talking to your children about divorce without pitting them against your ex Everyone deserves to have a beautiful life. You weren't put here to experience abuse or have your sense of self eroded. You, your children and your entire family can thrive after a narcissistic relationship, but it all starts within. It starts with you doing your work so you can model something different for your children and take the higher path even when your ex tries to tear you down. I hope this episode gives you new tools for growing your self-worth and practical ideas for navigating complex co-parenting situations. "They basically try to destroy who you are as a person." - Sarah Kamoto "They don't ever take responsibility, and they blame you for everything." - Michelle Chalfant "It's a slow erosion." - Sarah Kamoto "I realized that I couldn't have had self-love if I allowed someone to treat me in this way without setting my own boundaries." - Sarah Kamoto "I don't think emotionally healthy people end up in these relationships. You only become emotionally healthy when you've been forced to do this work." - Sarah Kamoto "Isn't the fact that you want more and deserve more enough?" - Sarah Kamoto "It's a lot easier just to switch victims and move on to somebody else than to actually go and do the inner healing work." - Sarah Kamoto "I think anything is possible. And for me it boils down to, 'How aware are you?'" - Michelle Chalfant "Life is too short. I want to live a beautiful life. Everyone deserves to live a beautiful life. We were not put on this earth to be treated in this way and downtrodden and abused." - Sarah Kamoto "Not all people with narcissistic traits are abusive." - Sarah Kamoto "You're trying to parent and you're trying to heal and you're trying to co-parent with somebody who is high conflict." - Sarah Kamoto "You need to differentiate who you are from who the other parent is." - Sarah Kamoto LINKS & RESOURCES Sarah Kamoto Instagram https://www.instagram.com/narc_proof_and_thriving/ Sarah Kamoto Website https://narcproofandthriving.com/ 2023 Adult Chair® Coaching Certification - Doors Open Now! https://theadultchair.com/certification Tanasi https://tanasi.com/ Use code ADULT for 50% off your first order MORE ADULT CHAIR The Adult Chair® Website https://theadultchair.com  The Adult Chair® Membership https://theadultchair.com/membership/ The Adult Chair® Events https://theadultchair.com/events/ The Adult Chair® Coaching Certification https://theadultchair.com/certification STAY CONNECTED Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/themichellechalfant Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/TheMichelleChalfant/ The Adult Chair® Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/theadultchair/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/Michellechalfant
