Ep111. Crypto Corruption: Trump 2.0 with Frank Vogl

Corruption, corruption, everywhere corruption. And no attempt to stop it in sight. As Trump and his cronies get rich from cypto, dismantle government, and propose their companies fulfilled outsourced contracts, the meta analysis of the new administration appears plain and simple: The tariffs, the strategic crypto fund, meme coin, it is all just corruption out in the open.     If it is so plain for all to see, how are they getting away with it?    To find out, Jason is joined by Frank Vogl. Formerly a foreign correspondent for The Times (UK), and then a senior official at the World Bank, Frank set up Transparency International in 1993, and then co-founded the Partnership for Transparency Fund in 1998. These two global organizations are at the forefront in the fight by civil society against corruption. Now, Frank is an Adjunct Professor at Georgetown University and the author of many articles and two books on global corruption – ‘The Enablers' and ‘Waging War on Corruption'.    In their discussion, Jason and Frank delve into the overt corruption of various decisions early in the 2nd Trump Administration, providing a focus on the role cryptocurrency plays in this corruption. Then, they look at the dismantling of anti-corruption mechanisms, and the transformation of the Republican Party into a vehicle for Trumpism and mafioso crony enrichment of Trump's allies. Then: they analyse the complicity of Western nations in enabling corruption, and the economic implications of these actions.    Finally, as they Order the Disorder, Frank pushes for the establishment of an international anti-corruption court, and argues that European governments can and should step up to help fight back against this corruption.    Producer: George McDonagh  Executive Producer: Neil Fearn    Subscribe to our Substack - https://natoandtheged.substack.com/    Show Notes Links:  For more on Frank's work visit - https://www.frankvogl.com/news     For more on Transparency International - https://www.transparency.org/en/     Get Frank's book The Enablers: How the West Supports Kleptocrats and Corruption - Endangering Our Democracy - https://www.amazon.co.uk/Enablers-Kleptocrats-Corruption-Endangering-Democracy-ebook/dp/B09JGL62L1/     Get Frank's book Waging War on Corruption: Inside the Movement Fighting the Abuse of Power - https://www.amazon.co.uk/Waging-War-Corruption-Movement-Fighting/dp/1442218533/   Learn more about your ad choices. Trad Wives like Hannah Neeleman and her Ballerina Farm empire have captured our imagination - and divided our opinions. Trad Wives are an Instagram phenomenon using highly-produced content to promote traditional family values - specifically, the idea that women would be happier if they stayed home and served their husbands and children, trading in a life of career-focused grind culture for a life of content domesticity - and nobody sells this idea better than Hannah Neeleman. Megan Agnew is a journalist for the Times UK and she managed to spend a day with Hannah, her husband Daniel and their eight children on the notoriously hard to penetrate Ballerina Farm - she saw behind the scenes…and what she saw is very different than what we see on Instagram. Megan Agnew's article went viral and sparked a million think pieces and spurred some very strong reactions…including from the Neelemans themselves. So what is behind the Trad Wife movement - and is it just harmless entrepreneurship, or is there a darker, more serious ideology behind it? You can follow Megan Agnew here. This week, Kate explores the Ballerina Farm article heard ‘round the World Wide Web and reacts to the Times UK profile of homesteaders Hannah Neeleman and her husband Daniel, who run a picturesque farm in Utah with their eight children. Kate high-level examines Neeleman's portrayal of farm life, the influence of their Mormon faith on gender roles, how that lack of context likely made the article more inflammatory to a secular audience, and discusses the complexities of claimed empowerment in our choices when they're from a finite set of options. She also goes on a gratuitous Juilliard tangent (the Troy Bolton of it all), but not before a predictable plea to her audience to not marry someone after three weeks and a rant about bearing children being left up to God's will. Kate also touches on her confusion about the label of “trad wife,” wonders if she is one while her son is on her lap while she records, and attempts to explore the nuances of active versus passive harm when promoting a certain traditional (or regressive) lifestyle on the internet. In this week's conversation between Dr. James Emery White and co-host Alexis Drye, they discuss the newest generational cohort that sociologists and marketers are playing close attention to - Generation Alpha. Ranging in age from those born in 2010 through 2025, Gen Alpha will be the first generation raised fully in a world of technological integration. So what does the church, as well as the wider world, need to understand about this generation? What makes them unique? Episode Links Dr. White has authored two books centered around the profiles of particular chunks of our society: The Rise of the Nones - those who refuse to identify themselves with any particular religion, and Meet Generation Z - an inside look at the inner world of Gen Zers, their cultural context, and their relationship with faith and God. We're just seeing the beginnings of books and articles focusing on Gen Alpha and trying to learn more about them. Here are some that we'd suggest for you: Harriet Walker, “We're Generation Alpha (14 and under with millions of followers),” The Times UK. April Rubin, “‘A landmark generation': Introducing Gen Alpha,” Axios. Mark McCrindle, Ashley Fell and Sam Buckerfield, Generation Alpha: Understanding Our Children and Helping Them Thrive (Hatchette: Australia, 2021). Marcia Lawrence, “Welcome ‘Generation Alpha'— the Youngest Pre-Consumers,” The Emporia Gazette. Adrianne Pasquarelli and E.J. Schultz, “Move Over Gen Z, Generation Alpha Is the One to Watch,” Advertising Age. “Generation Alpha,” Hotwire. Finally, never will parental involvement be more important than for Gen Alpha, who have so much access to information but so little access to wisdom. Dr. White has delivered a number of series at Mecklenburg Community Church on topics related to the family and parenting. You can find those messages HERE. And parents need to have the courage to have honest conversations with their children about faith. We'd suggest you read an article by Kara Powell and Steven Argue from Christianity Today titled “The Biggest Hindrance to Your Kids' Faith Isn't Doubt. It's Silence.” For those of you who are new to Church & Culture, we'd love to invite you to subscribe (for free of course) to the twice-weekly Church & Culture blog and check out the Daily Headline News - a collection of headlines from around the globe each weekday. How cool will that be - to see your name up in lights!Knowing that you were part of a documentary that will hopefully improve so many people's lives! Here is the GoFundMe link again just in case you missed it - https://gofund.me/02540b1bWhat the film is about:Why is it so hard to take a break? The film explores the power, influence and interference of the multi-trillion dollar alcohol industry in our daily lives. Our documentary follows my journey as I dive into the benefits of taking a break from alcohol, meeting key experts in health, the alcohol-free spaces and communities around the globe. I'll also uncover how misinformation and clever marketing have slowly duped us into a culture that can't seem to exist without a drink.  We will look into our government's role in the alcohol mess, whilst uncovering stories and coverups that will SHOCK you! Most importantly, we'll invite important voices to the table and reveal how we can collectively make a difference to fuel the momentum of the alcohol-free movement to change the world! This documentary will hopefully inspire millions watching to take a break and experience the life transformational benefits.Community & Audience:Our aim is to raise the awareness of the middle-lane drinker so they can see the negative impact those few drinks are having on their health, relationships and happiness. How the film started: Over a year ago, our Director Jon Hyatt watched my TEDx talk ‘The Limitless Pill' whilst filming his latest documentary about health, and wondered why many of the experts he interviewed never mentioned alcohol? The plan was for me to be the alcohol-free expert in this documentary, but the more we spoke it became clear that there was a need for a documentary specifically for alcohol-free. Once Jon finished filming, he suggested we tell the story through my eyes and flew from Canada to the UK to film some early interviews in London and the alcohol-free documentary adventure began! Why I am making this film:2024 marks my 10th anniversary, alcohol-free, and I feel better than ever. This documentary is for the hundreds of millions of middle-lane drinkers, which is about 70% of the adult population of the Western world. I was one of them. When I first coined the term “middle lane” on the Rich Roll podcast, people understood and after millions of views and downloads later, this episode has inspired so many people. So I realised now is the time. It's been a rough time for everyone, especially during COVID. Alcohol consumption was a major contributor, and we're left with the worst hangover ever. People are fatigued, depressed and suffering from poor mental and physical health. With the recent emergence of zero-proof industries, dry trends, I've noticed a huge uptick in folks taking long breaks from alcohol, seeking help, guidance and community. Our aim is to raise the awareness of the middle-lane drinker so they can see the negative impact those few drinks are having on their health, relationships and happiness.Equally, we want to sing from the rooftops about the incredible advantages you experience when you take a break. We want to celebrate the alcohol-free communities, influencers and alcohol-free drinks industry that is propelling the alcohol-free movement. And finally, we want to champion you!We want to showcase the incredible rise of alcohol-free heroes who are courageous enough to take a break and enjoy life on the fun side of the island. And It's a movement I've championed for ten years and truly it is my life's work. What we will do with your donation:Your donation will form the most important part of our documentary road map. While our producers are pitching the project to distributors, in the interim, there are many important and exciting events that we need to capture on film that cannot wait and are crucial to the story. Your donation will contribute to production and filming, securing access to important guests and locations. Your donations will fund the early stages of the documentary, and this kickstart is vitally important! Here is what you get along with our eternal gratitude:You get to say you were part of the documentary that has the power to change the world! You get to share the joys of alcohol-free and potentially make the world a better, healthier place. We will also be sent a link to watch the documentary for free once we do a digital release. This link will be provided via email notification once the documentary is launched. You will also get regular updates via email on the behind the scenes progress.I will take you with me on this journey every step of the way, from the first interview to the red carpet. And I am sure a few of you will get to join me at the premier event! Are you ready? Let's change the world together.CheersAndy & the team!*************************************************OUR TEAM:Host - Andy Ramage, author, speaker, coach. Andy was given the title of “the Godfather of the Alcohol-Free movement” by the Happy Pear twins Stephen and David. His relentless effort spanning a decade has included starting the OneYearNoBeer movement, and co-creating the Dryy alcohol-free app and lifestyle brand, and cultivating community in the alcohol-free space. Andy's captivating TEDx talk called ‘The Limitless Pill' garnered international attention, and he has since been featured on the world's biggest podcasts including Rich Roll Podcast and The Feel Better Live More Podcast with Dr. Rangan Chatterjee. It was an unbiased exploration of the tech industry, speaking with tech experts, doctors, children's advocates, behavioural scientists, and families. In this week's conversation between Dr. James Emery White and co-host Alexis Drye, they discuss the recent decision made by the U.S. Surgeon General to release an official statement on the harm that is being done to teens through the use of social media. It is causing an alarming rise in mental health issues, with studies finding that excessive use of social media has been linked to cyberbullying, disrupted sleep cycles, reduced physical activity, body-image issues, an increase in self-harm, exposure to pornography, and increased rates of depression and anxiety. Sadly, many parents consider themselves helpless to do anything about it. Episode Links In his latest book Hybrid Church: Rethinking the Church for a Post-Christian Digital Age, Dr. White has an entire section on social media as it relates to the church, and how to think Christianly about it. Because it is clear that the church cannot remain silent about the harmful effects that social media has on our society. To help with this, Mecklenburg Community Church offers an on-demand class through the Meck Institute called “FaceTime: What Parents Need to Know About Technology, Social Media, Video Games and More.” Along with that class that is designed to serve parents, Dr. White gave a series at Mecklenburg Community Church that stresses the importance of parents being informed, involved, and in charge. It's called “The Under-Protective Parent” and is available on Church & Culture HERE. There are several stories that have been in the news of late related to this topic that were mentioned during today's conversation and that have been shared through the Daily Headline News on Church & Culture: Matt Richtel, Catherine Pearson and Michael Levenson, “Surgeon General Warns That Social Media May Harm Children and Adolescents,” The New York Times, May 23, 2023. This week on the Raw Politics podcast: How the defection of a minister changes political equations for the election and coalition building, the endless nothingness of the republican debate and a futile Act in Tamaki.Meka Whaitiri's waka jumping from Labour to Te Pāti Māori was a political play in two acts.Act 1 was her dramatic and emotional announcement at her home marae, signalling in great harmony, musically and politically, that something seismic could be happening in Māori and post-election politics. Act 2, was the dry and confusing debate in Parliament later that same day and Thursday as the Speaker and House tried to determine whether she was still a Labour MP, was an Independent or was with Te Pāti Māori in more than spirit. The Raw Politics panel tries to assess both strands of the big political story of the week and whether the first will ultimately prevail through Whaitiri winning the seat at an election in or before October. On the eve of the Coronation, we discuss the endless, fruitless cycle of debate over if and when New Zealand will cast off its royal and colonial links and walk into its own mana as a republic.A listener wanted to know if Act has any chance standing in the blue, blue National seat of Tamaki in October. And the panel recommends for your weekend pleasure a story revealing the dire state of our conservation department a timely Times UK story on the royals' party planner cum funeral director and we have kudos for the journalist who got the scoop on the Whaitiri bombshell.Every Friday, Jo Moir, Sam Sachdeva and Tim Murphy talk through the big issues and scrutinise politicians' performances in a lively 25-minute show aiming to take viewers and listeners inside the actions and motivations of our elected leaders. Watch Raw Politics on YouTube, or download or listen to it as a podcast on Spotify, or via Apple Podcasts. Meritocracy: the idea that people should be advanced according to their talents rather than their birth. While this initially seemed like a novel concept, by the end of the twentieth century it had become the world's ruling ideology. How did this happen, and why is meritocracy now under attack from both right and left? In The Aristocracy of Talent, esteemed journalist and historian Adrian Wooldridge traces the history of meritocracy forged by the politicians and officials who introduced the revolutionary principle of open competition, the psychologists who devised methods for measuring natural mental abilities, and the educationalists who built ladders of educational opportunity. He looks outside western cultures and shows what transformative effects it has had everywhere it has been adopted, especially once women were brought into the meritocratic system. Hello, mates! On today's show: Em Rata has launched a podcast that seems… an awful lot like another podcast. Why James Corden was banned - then unbanned - from a New York City restaurant, Selena Gomez and Hailey Bieber had a way better plan than leaving a love heart emoji on each other's TikToks, Drew Barrymore explains why she's A-OK with going years without sex, and then: the nanny has spoken. Oh, god, has the nanny spoken. Which means the extremely messy split between Olivia Wilde and Jason Sudeikis, somehow, just got messier. This week, Mich recommended ‘The heaviest pain in the world - Rob Delaney on his son's death' in The Times UK. The UK Post Office Scandal – Megaprojects, IT Systems and the Law This story is about the most widespread miscarriage of justice in English history. The scale of this story exceeds the witch trials of the 16th and 17th century. This story is relevant to every construction lawyer in Australia because it is a story rooted in how we deliver major projects, how we think about technology and its reliability and how we compromise our fundamental obligation as lawyers to act in the best interests of the law. This story will make you shake your head in disbelief. But as you listen to it, you need to keep in mind, all the way through, that there were lawyers, just like you and me, doing what they thought was their job. And this story is about regular people who worked for and ran Post Offices all across the UK who were prosecuted for theft by the Post Office after the launch of the Post Offices' first digital system, called Horizon. Almost 700 people were successfully prosecuted for theft by the Post Office. But they hadn't don't it and it took 20 years to prove their innocence. During this episode, Dr. Sean McFate discusses his influential book, The New Rules of War. Sean describes how the Westphalian state system is changing, consequences for conventional war, the rise of mercenaries and international mega-corporations, and information operations. Plus, the Cognitive Crucible gets not only one–but two–Monty Python references. Research Question: Sean asks several questions worthy of examination. First, how can a democracy fight secretive wars without losing its democratic soul? Second, strategic culture can eclipse strategic IQ; so, how can a strong strategic culture be broken? Finally, what is strategic thinking, and how are good strategic thinkers created? Wooldridge also shows how meritocracy has now become corrupted and argues that the recent stalling of social mobility is the result of failure to complete the meritocratic revolution. Rather than abandoning meritocracy, he says, we should call for its renewal.

Today we are chatting with Robin Luscombe. Robin is well know in UK club trials, particularly in Sidecars as he has been the 16 times British sidecar champion.   We hear about how Robin got into the sport, and those early influences that got him into sidecars but more importantly the groundswell of other riders that made trials sidecars less obscure and more of a regular occurrence at trials events. We discuss the challenges of forming new partnerships and his brief foray of solo riding and the SSDT during a period of times that was otherwise dominated by sidecar events.   We discuss the FIM Coupe, the trips abroad including all the way to Australia but ultimately the reasons why he gave up sidecars after so many years.   I was quite surprised to learn from Robin just how popular his current pursuit of classic trials is. They are getting 400+ riders to some of the classic multi-day trials in France and Spain and there is even high profile expert solo riders who are even dragging out the twin shock for these events.   Robin even pressed me on the reasons behind starting this podcast, which I know some of you have been curious about.   This was a real treats to chat with someone who was so passionate and determined in the sport of trials.   Ladies & gentlemen, I give you my chat with Robin Luscombe.   Contact the Podcast: Email: podcast@trials.com.au Facebook Group: Trials Australia Podcast Community Instagram: trialsauspodcast TikTok: @trials_aus_podcast

Hvad samler dem og hvor er de uenige? Yemen is a nation on the brink of collapse. Devastated by more than 5 years of civil war, the humanitarian situation in Yemen is dire. Economic volatility and conflict have stretched Yemenis' ability to cope to the breaking point, leaving millions deeply vulnerable and famine a real threat. In the first half of 2021, about 16 million people face acute levels of food insecurity, with a return of famine-like conditions for the first time in two years. Over 24 million people rely on humanitarian assistance to get by. According to the 2021 Global Report on Food Crises—an analysis of global food insecurity by 16 partners including the United Nations World Food Programme—conflict remains the leading driver of hunger globally, with about 99 million severely hungry people living across 23 conflict-affected countries. If adequately funded this year, the United Nations World Food Programme aims to provide emergency food assistance to about 13 million people as well as malnutrition treatment and prevention to 3.3 million children and mothers. Join our panelists for an inside view into Yemen's hunger crisis and how the U.N. World Food Programme is feeding and assisting Yemenis and working to build resilience. In this journey Catherine Nixey takes us into the early Church and to the very heart of the Roman Empire. From fanatical zealots attacking and destroying temples to harsh laws put in place by theocratic officials we see the origin and destruction of not just the classical world, but classical civilization itself. In Harran, the locals refused to convert. They were dismembered, their limbs hung along the town's main street. In Alexandria, zealots pulled the elderly philosopher-mathematician Hypatia from her chariot and flayed her to death with shards of broken pottery. Not long before, their fellow Christians had invaded the city's greatest temple, smashing its world-famous statues and destroying all that was left of Alexandria's Great Library. Today we refer to Christianity's conquest of the West as a “triumph.” But this victory entailed an orgy of destruction in which Jesus's followers attacked and suppressed classical culture, helping to pitch Western civilization into a thousand-year-long decline. From exploring her work and research to discussing how her work was received we cover a vast array of topics and viewpoints. Support our guest at these links below! A day after the Times UK's report titled “Japan looks for a way out of Tokyo Olympics because of Covid,” the head of Japan's Olympic committee, Yasuhiro Yamashita says the rumour is wrong and ridiculous. An anonymous source told the Times that the Japanese government has privately concluded the cancellation of the event. On Friday, Yamashita said, we are planning how to hold a safe and secure Games in great detail, working closely with the International Olympic Committee and the World Health Organisation. International Olympic Committee President, Thomas Bach said there was "no Plan B" for the Olympic games. IOC has the decision on the games whether to go ahead or not, but it is possible to be cancelled by the organisers such as the Japanese government, TOC and JOC. Earlier, Yamashita was asked how he planned to communicate with athletes about vaccination. He said it's a decision for the government to make. It's not for the JOC to decide, adding that he couldn't give a definitive timeline given that the vaccines were not being distributed yet. World's eyes are closely watching the organisers' comments on the games holding within six months. In episode 4 we chat to Jonathan Slaght a wildlife biologist working for the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) as their Russia & Northeast Asia co-ordinator and who is probably best known as one of the worlds foremost experts on the Blakiston's Fish Owl. I have tried to follow Jon's work on this rare and elusive owl from afar here in the UK often picking up small articles with updates on this incredible species and his work. I was so excited when after 10 years of studying this species in the remotest parts of Russia Jon has published his first book titled ‘Owls of the Eastern Ice' about his exploits attempting to understand the Blakiston's Fish Owl. The book has been a huge success including winning The Times UK nature book of the year - it is a must read for anyone with even the slightest interest in nature, I couldn't put it down. In this interview I find out what its like trying to understand the ecology of a rare and poorly understood species in some of the harshest terrain with an eclectic mix of human characters. Hopefully you get a feel for being on the front line of real cutting edge conservation. You can find out more about Jonathan Slaght and buy the book at https://jonathanslaght.com/ Thank you for listening and have a great festive season & new year!
