Beena Patel is a certified Physician Assistant, trained Yoga Teacher, Reiki Healer, and Health Coach for 5 years. Her personal experience as well as caring for many cancer patients in the top institutions in New York City as a certified Physician Assistant, she witnessed that each person is uniquely different and this is why she strongly believes in healing of the mind, body, heart and soul. This motivated her to start The Yoga Movement in 2019 to bridge the gap between science/modern medicine and alternative healing.  In this episode, you will learn:  1) That physical diagnoses are a portal to deeper healing and transformation if they are willing to be initiated into meeting deeper aspects of themselves and create space for more long-lasting transformation.  2) Everyone's healing journey is highly unique and individualized to their path. It is good to learn from different practitioners but to always return back to their body's wisdom as they make these decisions.  3) Be empowered in their health and well-being through honoring the different facets of themselves; they are not just physical beings. They are also spiritual, emotional, mental, and energetic. While it can sound complex, through opening up space to cultivate self-awareness and learn about themselves, they can see that each area of life is actually related and the more they take their power back in one area, it floods out into other areas as well.  Contact Beena Patel:  Email: beena@theyogamovementnyc.com  Website: Home - The Yoga Movement  Facebook: the yoga movement  Instagram: Instagram (@theyogamovement)  LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/beenapatelpa/  Contact Dr. Mary:  Email: mary@drmarysanders.com  Website: www.drmarysanders.com  Instagram: Instagram (@dr.maryesanders)  Facebook: Mary Sanders, D.C., MIM  LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/drmaryesanders/

Our guest today, Tara Stiles, first discovered yoga in New York while training to be a dancer. In our conversation, Tara shares how that first yoga class ignited her curiosity, and how she gradually made the transition from hustling in New York and being an aspiring dancer, to starting her own yoga studio, called Stråla, with her husband, Mike. We spend some time talking about the yoga scene at the time (including the pushback she received for diverging from established methods of teaching), and why she was determined to make yoga accessible to anyone eager to learn. Tuning in you'll hear how Tara went from teaching yoga in Central Park to starting her studio and flying around the world for a dizzying array of opportunities. She reveals feeling overwhelmed at this time, the effect it had on her marriage, and how she ultimately realized that she needed to slow down. We also discussed Tara's book Clean Mind, Clean Body: A 28-Day Plan for Physical, Mental, and Spiritual Self-Care, and what it was like writing it. As we wrap up, Tara shares the most important things she's learned about life, entrepreneurship, and marriage over the course of her life and career. Life is rarely simple (or straightforward), and no matter how much you plan, it never seems to go quite as expected. Tune in to learn about Tara's fascinating life journey and what she has learned from it!

In today's episode, host Lindsay Pinchuk sits down with special guest Lara Heimann, Founder of LYT Yoga to discuss how she is empowering movement by redefining the modern practice of yoga. Ever since she was young, Lara has been enthusiastic about movement. As a physical therapist and a certified yoga instructor, Lara wanted to bridge the gap between the two to make yoga more accessible for all people, no matter their skill level. Throughout her entrepreneurial journey, Lara had to rely on help from those around her, but because she was always clear on her mission, Lara was easily able to get the support she needed to grow her business to where it is today. Tune into this week's episode of Dear FoundHer… to learn more about the importance of asking for help, understanding your purpose, and being kind to yourself so you can successfully share your vision with the world. Quotes • “I think what happens when you're onto something and you're passionate, but you don't necessarily have the skill set, is that people want to come in and help you.” (11:17-11:25) • “I always had the ingredients to be a successful founder. I had the passion and I didn't have any kind of bias that things had to be a certain way. I really wanted a studio and a brand that served as many people as possible.” (13:04-13:24) • “To me, yoga is this way of moving and living your life with as much awakeness as possible.” (19:05-19:12) • “Whatever form of movement that is going to make you feel clearer, more vibrant, happier, and more energized, go for that.” (19:37-19:47) • “I want to elevate every woman that comes my way. And so my job is not just to make them move better, it's to make them actually believe in themselves” (23:33-23:47) • “I have not always been the best friend. If you're starting a business, you're going to make decisions and people in your life might not like that you're working all the time.” (44:44-44:52 • “If you don't have a lot of money don't be afraid to ask for help because there's always something you can give back.” (46:16-46:24) •“Be tender with yourself. It might not turn out the way you want it to, but if you're passionate about it, you need to take care of yourself.” (49:14-49:20) Connect with Lara Heimann: Instagram for Lara | http://www.instagram.com/lara.heimann Website | https://lytyoga.com/lyt-daily-yoga/ Please don't forget to rate, comment, and subscribe. ABOUT BEENA PATEL Beena is a devoted and passionate Yoga & Meditation Teacher, Reiki Healer, and Intuitive. She combines her spiritual roots and medical background as a Physician Assistant into her teachings in order to optimize her clients' and students' health and wellbeing. After having discovered the amazing benefits of instilling a regular yoga and meditation practice into her own life, she began to notice the strong impact that a calming breathwork session and a gentle yoga sequence had on the lives of her patients by encouraging them to practice self-care. This led her to complete a 200-hr YTT and a specialized training with Yoga4Cancer (y4c) so that she could bring yoga to the wider community as well as her patient population in order to alleviate symptoms of anxiety, cancer-related pain, and fatigue. Beena's latest venture, The Yoga Movement, allows her to use Yoga, Meditation, Reiki, and Intuitive Healing sessions to help guide clients and students to a more optimal state of living -- one in which they feel aligned in mind, body, and Soul. By implementing these healing modalities in her practice, Beena aims to guide others in positively transforming their lives. My name is Huda and I'm the founder of Fempreneur Secrets, an online community for women to start and grow their business. I created this podcast to inspire women from all walks of life to get started in business. They're all meant to be step-by-step so you can take quick action into your life and business today. Let's get started with today's episode.Huda: Today I have with me my friend Nura and she is the founder and creative director of Her Tribe SG. Nura, thank you so much for being here. Nura: Thank you for having me, Huda. Huda: No problem. So share with me a little bit more about what you do. Nura: What I do on a daily basis is that I manage a team of five amazing instructors who are really excellent in their specialised expertise. Collectively together we actually empower women from all walks of life towards holistic healing through different holistic classes that happen on a day to day basis. We are basically a safe sanctuary for women to actually consider their emotional, mind, spiritual, and physical growth towards the holistic classes. Huda: I understand that you also a pre and postnatal instructor. Nura: Yeah, yeah. Huda: So that's really interesting. So, do you incorporate this into your classes as well? Nura: Definitely, I wouldn't want my prenatal and postnatal mothers miss out on the benefits of essential oils because I think, once you hold a title of mother you need a lot of emotional support. And it comes from these essential oils where we take care of your self-love and understanding what your body really needs by releasing all those negativity and tensions inside the body. Huda: How are they like when they are in the classes? Do they bring their babies or it's just them? Nura: For postnatal classes, it's usually where I allow mothers to bring the babies. But for prenatal the mothers come on their own, of course with the babies inside, and they are very committed. Huda: So how long has Her Tribe been around? Nura: So basically I founded Her Tribe in 2013 and I started to rebrand it into Her Tribe two years ago. Huda: What were you doing before this? Nura: Before that I was still schooling and doing my degree in business management, majoring in digital marketing. And I was actually working in publishing communications in a local company in Singapore, yeah. Huda: So now share with me a little bit more about what was your turning point? What made you would decide that no matter what, this is the industry I'm going to be in, I'm going to stick into this industry. Nura: I was actually a colon cancer survivor. And that turning point actually gave me a true calling to do something about my wellbeing. Huda: So colon cancer — how old were you when you actually had that? Nura: When I had that I was actually 21-years-old. Huda: Oh my God! Nura: Yeah. Huda: So 21-years-old means you were actually studying at the time? Nura: Yes, I was still studying. Huda: Oh my God! And you managed to complete your degree nonetheless. Nura: Yes. Huda: Okay, so that is such- Nura: It was struggling, but I have help from my ex-boyfriend who is now my husband. Huda: Okay, so he was there to help you in this journey. Nura: Yes. Yeah. Huda: I understand Her Tribe sells subscriptions also, in a way, passes right? Nura: Correct, yes. Huda: It's called passes to fit people. Woman who wants to have more than one class. So you want to have that commitment, right? Nura: Right. Huda: So what was the inspiration behind that model? Nura: I look at the Yoga Movement as one of my businesses inspirations. And that actually inspired me with this code that I hold on to daily. "If you want to go fast, you go alone, but if you want to go far, you go together as a team." Huda: After four years of running your business, then you chose to rebrand. So what was the inspiration or motivation to rebrand? Nura: The inspiration to rebrand is having the notion that I can impact more lives when I go into diversity and when I stick to challenging myself in storytelling i.e different message for different campaigns that her tribe wants to deliver every month. Huda: In that sense, I guess in a way you are seeing that the reason for moving and rebranding as a point in your business regardless of where you are listening or in your stage in your business: You chose to rebrand only if it impacts more life or it really changes the whole mission of what you are doing. Nura: If you have an experience that you go through on a personal live, I guess that impacted the growth of your business as well. Yeah, that way, there is some essence that you can put into words or into visuals. Huda: Okay, so I have this very interesting question to ask everyone I interview. Nura: Okay. Huda: So what is one thing that you wish someone would have told you when you are starting out as an entrepreneur? But nobody actually tell you. Nura: I wish someone would have told me that it takes a lot of hard work and consistent actions, because you may have the best ideas and intentions to have a certain campaign or certain product, but then if you don't have consistent actions, it will not bear fruit. Huda: Let's talk about what you offer, what Her Tribe offers as a whole. So we mentioned about all the different activities. So you shared with me about an app. Nura: Yes, yeah, yeah. In Her Tribe, I offer two types. An online service and offline service as well. So you know that offline service, we have our studio classes. Members are or even followers, will be able to do their classes online. Huda: So they can do this online? Nura: Yes. Huda: At the comfort of their own homes? Nura: Yeah, yeah, in the comfort of their home. Huda: Okay, that's lovely. So we will put a link in the show notes for you to find out more about this when it's ready. So what's Her Tribe going to be like maybe three or six months down the road? Nura: We will still be offering our offline classes in the studio, but it will be more emphasis on our online classes where the members or even our new followers will be able to do our classes in the comfort of their home or offices. Huda: How can our listeners get in touch with you? Nura: Of course, it's through social media. So if they want to find us on Instagram or Facebook it's, hertribe.sg. But if they want to go online, it's www.hertribe.sg. Huda: Okay. That's nice. Okay. So I think we've pretty much summarised everything that we needed to and we already discussed a lot of things with you, Nura. Thank you so much for being here and I think it's really inspirational and insightful to have your perspective into the business. Nura: Thank you, Huda, for having me. Erin Jade has been working in massage therapy and yoga/movement instruction since 2004. In 2014 she began to pivot away from traditional asana into varietal movement drawing from the influences of Katy Bowman, Erwan Le Corre, Ido Portal, Igor Burdenko, Moshe Feldenkrais, FRC, Laban Bartenieff, contemporary dance and more. The search led her to movement education and rehab through the lens of applied neuroscience when she discovered education systems Z Health and Applied Movement Neurology Academy. Erin has begun to introduce these concepts to yoga and movement teachers and we are so lucky to have her on the podcast today teaching us the basics about applied neuroscience in yoga and movement classes. In this episode you'll hear: why it is important to assess how our nervous system functions and how we might do that how much of our movement ability is driven by our vision and what should yoga teachers should do with that information why what we do in class should translate to functional skills applicable to everyday life and what that might look like in an asana class and much more!

068: Trauma-Sensitive Yoga with Amy Hoare   Today's episode opens up a difficult but important issue in the yoga world; the abuse of power.  Shannon has invited Trauma Treatment Specialist Amy Hoare who has recently completed her 300-hour at the Trauma Center Trauma Sensitive Yoga program. Amy conducted a survey as part of her final project which focused on hands-on-assists, power dynamics, and abuse in yoga.   Amy began her yoga practice with the intention of working through trauma and decided to become a yoga teacher for her own healing. Amy took her YTT at Karma Teachers in Vancouver, BC, finding the program focused a lot on transformation and healing. Karma Teachers is a not-for-profit community-based program focused on working through trauma.   Amy compiled data for a survey she created about the abuse of power in yoga classes. There were 146 respondents (all of whom have participated in a yoga class), answering a series of questions that would help Amy unearth the overt and subtle abuses of power. Amy notes that there is an inherent power dynamic between the student and teacher- especially in guru settings. Amy shares that her intention was not to shame or cause division but rather to help her identify power imbalances so she could shed light on this for students and teachers.   Shannon and Amy discuss the oftentimes unsettling results. Amy also shares how her training and final project have influenced how she now teaches, defines terms such as complex trauma and trauma-sensitivity training, and gives tips on how you incorporate a trauma-informed perspective into your teaching. 5:45 Amy's yoga journey   8:30 Amy's understanding of trauma as she's grown in experience and education   9:10 Complex Trauma-  a trauma that is repeated (a duration element to it)   Always relational- always happens in relationship and therefore trauma is healed in relationship   10:35 Background on the survey   13:55 Survey question: Have you been physically abused by your yoga teacher (11.6%)   16:15 Survey question: have you been verbally abused by a yoga teacher? (24%)   18:45 Survey question: Have you ever found your yoga teacher value your experience over yours? (68%)   20:10 How the study influenced Amy's teaching   22:25 Amy's choice to back away from public classes and her focus moving forward in the trauma-sensitive yoga field.     25:15 How Amy's language has shifted in and out of yoga classes e.g. asking vs. telling   Question for yoga teachers: Is there a possibility to be more aware of subtleties like language, cueing, and offering hands-on-assists?   31:25 Working within the scope of your practice to help students and the benefit of therapy in conjunction with yoga classes   34:40 Authentic connection and its relation to attachment theory; facilitator is doing the movement with the student and how that can create an authentic connection with a healthy attachment   35:45 How Amy practices non-attachment in her teaching by not being attached to a rigid idea of the form- the point is a shared authentic experience, the practice of making choices and bringing in interoceptive awareness, all of which is based on trauma theory, attachment theory, and neuroscience   39:00 Interoception in trauma-sensitive and trauma-informed classes, normalizing “feeling nothing”, avoid telling students what they need to feel and what the pose should look like   41:40 Functional movement vs. precise poses   43:45 Answers to hands-on-assists questions influenced the biggest change in Amy's teaching:   Have you received a physical assists or adjustments without being asked (65%)   Have you ever felt pressured to receive a yoga assist adjustment even when consent was given (37%)   46:20 Survey question: Have you noticed that certain advanced poses or forms are valued as more spiritual than other forms by your teachers through statements such as “go deeper”? (66%)   This response relates back to attachment to the form or that we need to take people somewhere in particular   47:30 What Amy wants to say to yoga teachers about the results of the survey and moving forward   52:40 Shannon's closing thoughts and key takeaways   Terms   Interoception: Interoception is our ability to “internally-sense”; such as the feelings of hunger, feeling the need for a “bio-break”, feeling our heart racing, or feeling ourselves getting anxious. Interoception can be compromised by negative conditioning. This conditioning can come in the form of verbal cues “only babies cry” resulting in a shame in expressing deep pain with tears. Other verbal cues such as “you're not sick, you're just faking it” resulting in a conditioned distrust of our somatic symptoms. It can also be compromised due to trauma and toxic stress. The good news is through contemplative somatic and cognitive techniques such as meditation, mindfulness, and yoga (contemplative movement) we can improve our connection with what is going on inside ourselves!   From the article: Interoception: Our Felt Sense from Trauma Recover Yoga.Com   Complex Trauma: Complex post-traumatic stress disorder (C-PTSD; also known as complex trauma disorder) is a psychological disorder thought to occur as a result of repetitive, prolonged trauma involving sustained abuse or abandonment by a caregiver or other interpersonal relationships with an uneven power dynamic.   Excerpt from: Complex Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Wikipedia Article   Trauma-Sensitive Yoga: “Trauma-sensitive yoga goals are quite contained, evidence-based model for effective treatment for trauma survivors. “ -Amy Hoare   Trauma-sensitive yoga helps them learn to calm their minds and regulate their physical responses and, thus, their emotions. They're able to learn to recognize and tolerate physical sensations and thereby regain a feeling of safety inside their bodies.   From Trauma-Sensitive Yoga on socialworktoday.com   Trauma-Informed Care: Trauma Informed Care is an organizational structure and treatment framework that involves understanding, recognizing, and responding to the effects of all types of trauma.   From the Trauma Informed Care Project.Org Links   Amy's Email: Amyrobynagnes@gmail.com   Yoga Movement and Research Group on Facebook   Link to Amy's Survey: Power and Yoga   Trauma Center Trauma Sensitive Yoga program- great resources on the site   Karma Teachers in Vancouver   Related TCYT Episode:   003: Trauma Training for Every Yoga Teacher with Margaret Howard   The Connected Teacher Facebook Group   Follow The Connected Teacher on Youtube   Book a Consultation Call with Shannon   Define Your Yoga Niche Online Course   Gratitude to our Sponsor Schedulicity
