What things you should avoid while driving. Today's cars are also packed with plenty of safety features like airbags, anti-lock braking systems, traction control, and shatterproof glass. However, despite your car's sophisticated safety features or computer system, you could find yourself in a tricky situation at the worst possible time. And it's still a good idea to avoid doing certain things. TIMESTAMPS: Don't press the “Off” button while driving 0:58 Don't select “reverse” while driving 1:50 Don't select “park” while driving 2:26 Don't attach too many keys to the ignition key 2:54 Don't forget to change your car's oil 3:35 Don't overfill the engine oil 4:27 Don't wait until the fuel tank is empty 5:05 Don't ignore warning indicators 5:45 Don't forget to check your tire pressure 6:31 Don't forget to balance your tires 7:14 #parking #drivingtips Music: https://www.youtube.com/audiolibrary/... SUMMARY: Some cars might require you to press the button for 3 seconds or more to shut it down. This is a safety feature in case you have a problem with your accelerator or brakes. If your car has cameras and a screen on the deck, the rear-facing camera might come on, or parking aids might become available, but the car won't back up all of a sudden or come to a stop. If you shift to park while driving, your car might make an awful grinding noise and continue driving. Your car probably won't suffer damage if you accidentally do this once. Gravity is still at work when you put your car keys into the ignition. During car rides, bumps and potholes will cause these heavy keys to pull and pull on the ignition until it wears out the tumblers. If you don't change your oil, your car will run less efficiently. It will also stop lubricating the engine components, causing wear and tear. If the mechanical components continue to grind on each other, the car might become inoperable. The engine oil always comes with a dipstick, which has a mark to indicate the level the oil needs to be filled to. Fill it to this level and not to the top as if it were a bottle. Signs that your car's catalytic converter has been damaged are that your car won't accelerate when you press the pedal, your car's fuel emission will drop suddenly, or your car won't start. A good rule of thumb is that if you see a warning light on the dashboard, call or bring it to a mechanic as soon as possible. Checking your tire pressure is a good practice that often falls by the wayside. It's even more important to do it when you're headed out on a road trip or if your daily commute is over 30 minutes. If the tires are out of balance, you don't have full control of your car, and your tires will wear unevenly. Messy Family Podcast : Catholic conversations on marriage and family
Parenting isn't about doing everything perfectly. It's about showing up over and over again no matter what. Summary Some may question how a celibate man could have wisdom for husbands and wives, let alone parents. But in this interview with Fr. Mike Schmitz, host of the Bible in a Year podcast, we think everyone will agree that his insights are awesome! Drawing from his own family experience as well as his role as a spiritual father, Fr. Mike shares with us how to love children who have fallen away from the church, the importance of your marriage to your walk with God, and why you actually don't need to have the perfect plan for your family. In this conversation we laughed and cried as we reflected on the beauty and difficulties of life in a family (with some special shoutouts to middle children!). Listen in as we have an honest and inspiring talk with a priest whose ministry has blessed so many. Key Takeaways Our family of origin impacts us more than almost anything else in our lives. Parents put so much pressure on themselves to be perfect that sometimes they miss out on the joy of family life. It's more important that we are intentional about family life than we have the “perfect plan” on how to be a family. It's not a bad thing for kids to see their parents have conflict as long as they are also able to experience the effects of their reconciliation. We can't make the world safe for our kids, but we do need to make our kids strong. The heart of the Father is the heart of the priesthood. If someone falls away from the Church, we may be tempted to cut them out or approve of everything they do, but neither is correct. Remain in their lives in a consistent and uncompromising way, recognizing that their story isn't over. Couple Discussion Questions Are there areas in our family life that we need to evaluate and possibly change? Is there a course we are on that we need to correct? Knowing that our kids will be growing up in a difficult world, how can we make them strong? How can we respond better to those who have turned away from Christ or His Church? How can we keep those lines of communication open? Who are the “spiritual fathers” in our life? How can we pray for them? Guests In this episode, I was deeply fortunate to sit down with two amazing guests: Benjamin Zander and Rosamund Stone Zander. Ben is the conductor of the Boston Philharmonic Orchestra and the Boston Youth Orchestra. Rosamund was a therapist and an accomplished painter and sadly passed away in September 2023. They are the authors of The Art of Possibility – a life-change book if you adopt its twelve practices. Roz was the author of a follow-up volume, Pathways to Possibility. Summary Some readers and listeners may have the tendency to place these two books in the category of “self-help.” But as the authors point out early on in The Art of Possibility, “the practices presented in this book are not about making incremental changes that lead to new ways of doing things based on old belief, and they are not about self-improvement.” The practices are more transformational. This is not about playing better in old constructs, it's about playing in new constructs of our own making. As you listen How might Roz and Ben's respective roles – Roz as a therapist who listens for the stories that clients tell and Ben as a conductor who helps musicians break through barriers – apply to the roles that educational leaders and teachers play? How people live in what they think is reality when it's really just their interpretation. It's an invention. Why living with a spirit of possibility has to be created and practiced. Ben's and Roz's explanation of one of the practices, “The giving of an A.” In the book they write, “This A is not an expectation to live up to, but a possibility to live into.” The ownership of the “A” shifts from the traditional bestower, the teacher, to a co-created relationship with the student. How might this apply to education in our schools? What “Being a contribution” is dependent on. How Ben defines “leadership.” What leaders who follow the practice “Lead from any chair” believe in. How “Being the board” eliminates the need for blame.

(Piano music stops) Welcome to Ten Things I Like About… I'm Kiersten, your host, and this is a podcast about misunderstood or unknown creatures in nature. Some we'll find right out side our doors and some are continents away but all are fascinating. This podcast will focus ten, ten minute episodes on different animals and their amazing characteristics. Please join me on this extraordinary journey, you won't regret it. This episode continues echidnas and the ninth thing I like about these incredible animals is their senses. Just like most mammals echidnas have eyes, ears, a nose, and a tongue which covers four of the five senses. We know they use their eyes to see, their ears to hear, and their nose to smell and we're going to talk about all of these things in this episode. Whether they use their tongue to taste, I'm not sure, but we'll try and find out an answer. I do know they use their nose for more than just smelling. Let's get started. We'll begin with vision. Echidnas are often described as nocturnal, as I said in previous episodes, but some researchers and zookeepers have seen them active during the day. What does this have to do with their vision? Whether an animal is diurnal or nocturnal can, evolutionarily speaking, influence the development of color vision. Not many controlled studies have been done to truly determine the daily behaviors of the echidna, but scientists have been able to determine that echidnas do have some color vision. Since reports say echidnas are active both day and night it does stand to reason they have at least some color vision opsins. Their distance vision is nothing to write home about. In other words, not great, but they are excellent at discerning shapes. They can distinguish a human shape from other forms, so that means they can probably distinguish other animal and plant forms, as well. They don't rely on vision too much, but it is helpful during the daylight hours when and if they are active. Hearing is a sense that many animals with poor vision will depend on to survive. Echidnas are no expiation to this rule. They do have ears with which to hear, but the do not have external pinnae. The fleshly part of the ear that sticks out from the side of the head is called the pinna. We have them, dogs, and cat's have them, many mammals have them, but not echidnas. They have a large slit behind their eyes, often hidden in their fur and spines. This opening connects to their auditory canal and allows them to hear. A study published in 2001, determined that echidna hearing is as sensitive as other mammals such as gerbils and rabbits but it is a much narrower frequency range. They did establish that echidnas have some sort of cochlear amplifier inside the structure of the ear but it is not the same as other mammals. Echidnas can hear frequencies above 20 kHz which is higher than typical bird or reptile hearing but lower than typical mammal hearing. Let's take a quick lick, oh sorry, look at the sense of taste. The echidna has taste buds at the base of the tongue. The presence of taste buds implies that they can taste something. But what can they taste? A study published in 2022, looked at the bitter taste in the echidna. Bitter taste receptors are typically thought to help identify toxic chemicals in plants and invertebrates. This would be very important for an animal that eats invertebrates. This research concluded that echidnas do have just enough bitter taste buds to help keep them safe while foraging for food. More research will need to be done to find out if they have any other taste profiles. The nose. This is where we get to the really cool stuff. Echidnas have an excellent sense of smell. Their nose is located at the end of their long snout. They rely on their sense of smell to find food underground. Their keen sense of smell allows them to find termites, ants, earthworms and other soft bodied larvae in the ground. This isn't unusual or the truly exciting thing about their noses. The really cool thing about their noses is that they can sense electrical currents with it. That's pretty cool. I'm going to read you a paragraph from the Nature Comes Standard website that explains how this works. Quoting from the article entitled E.S.P: Echidna Sensory Perception, “The snout senses vibrations via both electrical and mechanical signals. A prey's movement creates a vibration that reaches the snout, acting upon a nanoscale column of cells like a combustion engine's push-rod. The push-rod transfers the signal to a nerve ending, creating an electric signal, and a mechanoreceptor creating a similar sensation as a humans fingertip. This information is processed to sense the presence and motion of prey. Like counting the time delay between a lightning flash and a thunder boom, the echidna can sense a prey's distance and speed.” End quote. That, I think, is quite a cool nose. There are even scientists studying how this works to improve human navigation and develop new methods of scanning objects. I love it when we take the time to learn from Nature. That's it for echidna senses, and I have a feeling that you found it just as interesting as I did because it's my ninth favorite thing about them. If you're enjoying this podcast please recommend me to friends and family and take a moment to give me a rating on whatever platform your listening. It will help me reach more listeners and give the animals I talk about an even better chance at change. Join me next week for the final episode about echidnas. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Why we may expect our successors not to care about suffering, published by Jim Buhler on July 11, 2023 on The Effective Altruism Forum. (Probably the most important post of this sequence.)Summary: Some values are less adapted to the “biggest potential futures” than others (see my previous post), in the sense that they may constrain how one should go about colonizing space, making them less competitive in a space-expansion race. The preference for reducing suffering is one example of a preference that seems particularly likely to be unadapted and selected against. It forces the suffering-concerned agents to make trade-offs between preventing suffering and increasing their ability to create more of what they value. Meanwhile, those who don't care about suffering don't face this trade-off and can focus on optimizing for what they value without worrying about the suffering they might (in)directly cause. Therefore, we should - all else equal - expect the “grabbiest” civilizations/agents to have relatively low levels of concern for suffering, including humanity (if it becomes grabby). Call this the Upside-focused Colonist Curse (UCC). In this post, I explain this UCC dynamic in more detail using an example. Then, I argue that the more significant this dynamic is (relative to competing others), the more we should prioritize s-risks over other long-term risks, and soon. The humane values, the positive utilitarians, and the disvalue penalty Consider the concept of disvalue penalty: the (subjective) amount of disvalue a given agent would have to be responsible for in order to bring about the highest (subjective) amount of value they can. The story below should make what it means more intuitive. Say they are only two types of agents: those endorsing “humane values” (the HVs) who disvalue suffering and value things like pleasure; the “positive utilitarians” (the PUs) who value things like pleasure but disvalue nothing. These two groups are in competition to control their shared planet, or solar system, or light cone, or whatever. The HVs estimate that they could colonize a maximum of [some high number] of stars and fill those with a maximum of [some high number] units of value. However, they also know that increasing their civilization's ability to create value also increases s-risks (in absolute). They, therefore, face a trade-off between maximizing value and preventing suffering which incentivizes them to be cautious with regard to how they colonize space. If they were to purely optimize for more value without watching for the suffering they might (directly or indirectly) become responsible for, they'd predict they would cause x unit of suffering for every 10 units of value they create. This is the HVs' disvalue penalty: x/10 (which is a ratio; a high ratio means a heavy penalty). The PUs, however, do not care about the suffering they might be responsible for. They don't face the trade-off the HVs face and have no incentive to be cautious like them. They can - right away - start colonizing as many stars as possible to eventually fill them with value, without worrying about anything else. The PU's disvalue penalty is 0. Image 1: Niander Wallace, a character from Blade Runner 2049 who can be thought of as a particularly baddy PU. Because they have a higher disvalue penalty (incentivizing them to be more cautious), the humane values are less “grabby” than those of the PUs. While the PUs can happily spread without fearing any downside, the HVs would want to spend some time and resources thinking about how to avoid causing too much suffering while colonizing space (and about whether it's worth colonizing at all), since suffering would hurt their total utility. This means, according to the Grabby Values Selection Thesis, that we should - all else equal - expect PU-ish values to be s...
Daily Halacha Podcast - Daily Halacha By Rabbi Eli J. Mansour
Many people have the practice after the end of Pesach not to immediately eat the Hametz in their homes which they had sold to a gentile, and to instead wait until the Rabbi through whom they had sold the Hametz purchases the Hametz back from the gentile. In truth, however, this is not necessary. When the gentile purchases the Hametz before Pesach, he makes a small down payment, committing to pay the full price later, after Pesach, but of course, the Hametz is then purchased back from the gentile right after Pesach. Most sale contracts used by Rabbis today include a clause stating that if some of the sold Hametz is eaten after Pesach, the value of that Hametz will simply be deducted from the amount which the gentile legally owes. Therefore, Hacham Bension Abba Shaul (Israel, 1924-1998) writes (listen to audio recording for precise citation) that one may make use of the Hametz immediately after the conclusion of Pesach, and does not have to wait for the Rabbi to purchase the Hametz back from the gentile.Hacham Bension adds that if this clause was not included in the contract, then one should wait before using his Hametz until the Rabbi purchases the Hametz back from the non-Jew. Other Poskim, however, maintain that even in the absence of an explicit cause, it can be assumed that the gentile who owns the Hametz does not mind if the Jew partakes of some of the Hametz, the value of which will be then deducted from the amount he needs to pay.In Israel, one should not eat Hametz until 72 minutes past sundown on the last day of Pesach. Since eating Hametz on Pesach constitutes a Torah prohibition, it is proper not to eat Hametz until the final day of Pesach has ended even according to the view of Rabbenu Tam (France, 1100-1171), who maintained that the Halachic day ends only 72 minutes after sunset. Outside Israel, where an additional day of Yom Tov is observed by force of Rabbinic enactment, this is not necessary, since on this extra day, eating Hametz is not forbidden by Torah law. As soon as the Yom Tob ends, one may partake of the Hametz.Summary: Some people have the practice the night after Pesach ends to refrain from eating the Hametz they had sold, until the Rabbi buys the Hametz back from the non-Jew. Strictly speaking, however, this is not necessary. In Israel, one should refrain from Hametz on the final day of Pesach until 72 minutes after sundown.
Summary: Some of your questions answered! Maybe. In fact. this is a fairly in-depth study of what many take for granted: we are going to heaven one day if we are good. Is that true? Summary Some leaders worry working from home may limit creativity. Research partially backs this up, but there are changes we can make. Transcript Welcome to episode 151 of the Leadership Today podcast where each week we bring research to life in your leadership. This week we explore the impact of working from home on creativity. Some leaders have expressed concerns about people working from home, particularly around the risks of reduced collaboration and creativity. They argue that having people physically together is more effective when we're aiming for creativity and innovation. The reality is it depends. It depends on the nature of work, the technology you're using, the way you're approaching creativity, your people and what you're trying to achieve. But what about individual creativity? Surely working from home doesn't reduce the effectiveness of solitary creative work? If anything, you might expect the ability to work uninterrupted would increase creativity. Recent research finds a surprising connection between free movement and creative thinking. They found it's not the movement per se that helps with creativity, but rather the freedom to move. When people can freely move around, they are more creative. You can imagine how that might apply in educational settings. When people are learning from home on a screen rather than interacting and moving around freely in a room with others creativity is likely to be reduced. But it can apply more broadly too. If you're needing to complete creative work, sitting at a desk staring at a screen is unlikely to help. You're better off finding a new place to work or using voice memos on your phone to allow you to move freely. That applies equally at home as it does in the office. So, if you want to be more creative, mix things up, work somewhere new and move around. If you found this episode helpful, I would love it if you could take a minute to provide a rating and review. This really helps others to find the podcast. Have a great week. Research Supriya Murali, Barbara Händel. Motor restrictions impair divergent thinking during walking and during sitting. Mario Run also had 4.7 million on day 1, so this isn’t necessarily indicative of long-term success, but it certainly does point in its general direction. Furthermore, Mario Run had 200k downloads on the same day, which is a 36% increase, meaning it’s having a positive impact outside of just Mario kart Tour. Also - Daniel Ahmad mentioned that Google Play shows 10m for that platform alone, so it’s probably actually closer to 20 mil. Otherwise - thoughts on the game? ------------------------------------------- Headline: Mario Kart Wheel controller announced for Switch Source: https://nintendoeverything.com/mario-kart-racing-wheel-for-switch-announced/ Summary: “HORI has announced a new Mario Kart Racing Wheel accessory for Switch. Players can choose to assign the different buttons as they please as well. There’s also “deadzone adjustment” and “reality adjustment” with seven different levels for adjusting turning radius so you can set it to your liking. Welcome to Finance and Fury Today will be a quick update for the upcoming election and policies in response to the budget plans released last week. This election is becoming a battle for votes among salary earners. In the past we have talked about class warfare strategy – it’s a tactic being used by both major parties. Breakdown: Where is each party is hanging their hats with incomes and taxes? Liberals announced tax cuts at the last budget last year Frydenberg’s affirming even more tax cuts for individuals and businesses, spending on education and infrastructure A reward for effort, aspiration, and enterprise, upholding personal responsibility and providing a helping hand where needed Next generation does not have to pick up the tab for the last generation Liberals are promising other things too like a budget surplus of $7.1bn which is a massive turnaround from 6 years ago when they took office Tax original plan under Liberals: Provide immediate relief by increasing tax offset Protect income earners from bracket creep – wage growth with no threshold increase pushes people into higher tax brackets Abolishing an entire tax bracket – incentivising hard work Doubling the low and middle-income tax offset from 2018 – 19 Structural reform by lowering the marginal tax rate to 30% for earners of $45k to $200k Limit the amount of tax as a share of the economy Being in surplus now means the government can reduce their revenue The previous episode explaining Reagan’s approach Someone earning $300k was paying 10 times more tax than someone no $45k What is Shorten’s response? Calling the budget radical right wing? Exposing shorten Claiming tax reductions are the same as giveaways. A giveaway to let people keep what they work for? What is Shorten’s background and what he represents vs what he has? Morrison summed it up best – why would you work hard under the Labor government? Labor’s budget plans: Alternative tax cuts and relief from bracket creep Said that 4.5 million workers earning between $48k and $90k will be better off under their plan, but are yet to release the details. ANU centre for social research has said under Labor there will be an increase in tax revenues of $39 bn over the years until 2024, which is a 5% increase from current revenues Analysts and professors say Labor’s plan will modestly lower income inequality but Liberal’s plan will modestly increase it because they pay more tax Let's have a look at some statistics FT Employed – 6.7m and PT employed – 3.9m – about 10.6m people 5m people shorten referred to are mainly PT or entry working positions Median Income (middle) for full-time workers - $78,268 p.a. Average Income of FT worker - $90,300 Average earnings of all workers (Pt and FT) - $67,243 What does this mean? The good side Simplified tax codes – this is a good thing Global confidence reaffirming the AAA rating Being on par with taxes in a global economy What is bad? Other bits of regulations, you need less regulation in conjunction with lower taxes to benefit Abhorrent material on platforms tax Encryption laws to get around privacy breaches ISPs banning sites Summary: Some very good things here with tax cuts Tax cuts are good, especially when they benefit low-income taxes Income taxpayers fund the government, so its good to incentivise them to work Thank you for listening today.
