The American Elm was the "go to" tree as the thing planted for shade in the mostly treeless Great Plains. As those Plains gave way to villages and towns and then to cities, the American Elm was the favored "street tree" that lined the streets in idyllic neighborhoods. There is an American Elm that has stood in Oklahoma City since before statehood, overlooked an ignored, that is, until April 19, 1995, when it's sturdiness became a prominent part of a story that shook and restored the faith of a nation.     SUPPORT INDEPENDENT ARTIST! In Podcast Episode 120, “More Than Conquerors: The Giant of Grief vs. The Lord of Heaven's Armies,” Kim discusses the giant of grief, which is a giant we all must face. Yet, even the largest and most painful giants of grief pale in comparison to the healing power of the Lord of heaven's armies.    The primary scripture text for this episode is 1 Samuel 17:1-58 with the key verses 4-7, 33:   4 Then Goliath, a Philistine champion from Gath, came out of the Philistine ranks to face the forces of Israel. He was over nine feet tall! 5 He wore a bronze helmet, and his bronze coat of mail weighed 125 pounds. 6 He also wore bronze leg armor, and he carried a bronze javelin on his shoulder. 7 The shaft of his spear was as heavy and thick as a weaver's beam, tipped with an iron spearhead that weighed 15 pounds. His armor bearer walked ahead of him carrying a shield.   33 “Don't be ridiculous!” Saul replied. “There's no way you can fight this Philistine and possibly win! You're only a boy, and he's been a man of war since his youth.”   Additional Verses:   37 No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. (Romans 8:37 NIV)   “He heals the brokenhearted and bandages their wounds.” (Ps. 147:3)   4 He will wipe every tear from their eyes, and there will be no more death or sorrow or crying or pain. All these things are gone forever.” (Revelation 21:4)    He comforts us in all our troubles so that we can comfort others. When they are troubled, we will be able to give them the same comfort God has given us. (2 Corinthians 1:4)   13 As soon as Jesus heard the news, he left in a boat to a remote area to be alone. But the crowds heard where he was headed and followed on foot from many towns. (Matthew 14:13)   33 When Jesus saw her weeping and saw the other people wailing with her, a deep anger welled up within him, and he was deeply troubled. 34 “Where have you put him?” he asked them. They told him, “Lord, come and see.” 35 Then Jesus wept. (John 11:33-35) Weekly Assignment Feature:    Meditate daily on this truth: “He heals the brokenhearted and bandages their wounds.” (Ps. 147:3)     Additional Resources:   “Facing Your Giants: God Still Does the Impossible” by Max Lucado   “Goliath Must Fall: Winning the Battle Against Your Giants” by Louie Giglio   The Story of the Survivor Tree   “How Would I Know” by Kathy Troccoli   I WANT TO BEGIN A PERSONAL RELATIONSHIP WITH JESUS CHRIST.    RESOURCES USED FOR BOOK OF 1 & 2 Samuel PODCASTS: “The Wiersbe Bible Commentary: The Complete Old Testament OT in One Volume” “The Tony Evans Bible Commentary: Advancing God's Kingdom Agenda” “Life Application Study Bible” “The Swindoll Study Bible: NLT” by Charles R. After being shot, Richie left his career as a corrections officer to become a gardener. He worked his way up in the NYC Department of Parks & Recreation to become director of the Citywide Nursery. While there he cared for the Survivor Tree, a Callery pear that was crushed (but not killed) in the 9/11 terror attacks. In Beacon, he founded the Sargent-Downing Garden.

TO THE MOON AND BACK A Baxter Family Novel   By KAREN KINGSBURY   From #1 New York Times bestselling author Karen Kingsbury comes a brand-new love story in the Baxter Family collection about two people who lost their parents in the same national tragedy – two people desperate to find each other and the connection they shared for a single day…a day that changed everything.   Brady Bradshaw was a child when the Oklahoma City bombing killed his mother. Every year, Brady visits the memorial site on the anniversary to remember her. More than a decade ago, he met Jenna Phillips, who was also a child when her parents were killed in the attack. Brady and Jenna shared a deep heart connection and a single beautiful day together at the memorial. But after that, Brady never saw Jenna again. This year, Ashley Baxter Blake and her sister Kari Ryan and their families take a spring break trip that includes a visit to the site to see the memorial’s famous Survivor Tree. While there, Ashley spots a young man, alone and troubled. That man is Brady Bradshaw. A chance moment leads Ashley to believe she can help Brady find Jenna, the girl he can’t forget. Ashley’s family is skeptical, but she pushes them to support her efforts to find the girl and bring them together. But will it work? Will her husband, Landon, understand her intentions? And is a shared heartache enough reason to fall in love? Karen Kingsbury, Karen Kingsbury, #1 New York Times bestselling novelist, is America’s favorite inspirational storyteller, with more than twenty-five million copies of her award-winning books in print. Her last dozen titles have topped bestseller lists and many of her novels are under development with Hallmark Films

Historian and author Jill Jonnes digs in to science, social benefits, culture, data and leafy lore in her new book Urban Forests: A Natural History of Trees and People in the American Cityscape (Penguin, 2016).            Jonnes tells us tree stories: from the inspiring Survivor Tree of New York's Ground Zero - which is actually an invasive species - to the arborists who branched out and developed data that prove the practical and dollar values of trees in times of city budget cuts. Jonnes' meticulous research and narrative flair make the strong case for community investment in trees, especially in an era when cities everywhere are taking an axe to budgets. Trees yield high ROI, in bio- and other DIVERSE ways. Music: Big Piney Blues - performed live by Brian Curran at KDHX, March 2015.
