It's difficult to imagine now but back in the early sixties, soul was 'underground' music in the UK - rarely played on the radio, and only appreciated by a small number of aficionados. Within a few years, records by artists on the Tamla Motown label would sell in their millions but in the very early 60s, very few people had heard of it. Among a small cult of fans was a Liverpool teenager Frank Collins who went on to form a blue-eyed soul band The Excels who later played at the Cavern Club, not singing rock n roll or Merseybeat, but soul music with intricate harmonies. Frank's 60-year career would take him onto the singles chart with the band Arrival then the British soul/funk pioneers Kokomo and later working with Bob Dylan, Bryan Ferry, Tom Robinson and many more. He's still writing and performing regularly today. We're delighted to have Frank as our special guest on this month's Misadventures in Music with Ian Prowse and Mick Ord 'Bill Harry's Sixties Snapshots - on Arrival/Kokomo' - https://sixtiescity.net/Mbeat/mbfilms191.htm BBC Four soul documentary- 'When Motown Came to Britain'. This is an apology for there not being a main episode this week. I've been ill most of the week, with an immune system flare-up presumably caused by my covid vaccine booster last week. I've been trying to get the podcast done, and did get a Patreon episode up on Wednesday, on "Sweet Soul Music" by Arthur Conley, but I have only now managed to finish recording this week's episode because of throat problems, and it's going to take a couple of days to get it edited. So I'm restarting the regular Monday posting on Monday. with episode 155, and episode 156 should be up a week after that.

In this episode we invite the great Peter Guralnick — Zooming in from his native Massachusetts — to discuss his "adventures in music and writing"… to quote the subtitle of his wonderful 2020 collection Looking to Get Lost.Peter takes his hosts back to his discovery of Delta blues giants Skip James and Robert Johnson in the early '60s — and to the first pieces he wrote for Paul Williams' Crawdaddy! in 1966. He explains his approach to the masterful profiles he collected in Feel Like Going Home and Lost Highway, and the friendships with Charlie Rich and Bobby "Blue" Bland that resulted from them. Conversation leads from Howlin' Wolf to Solomon Burke and southern soul, and from there to the use of Val Wilmer's remarkable photos in Peter's books.Talk of Memphis and Muscle Shoals prompts Mark to introduce the first of three clips from Barney's 1985 audio interview with Atlantic Records legend Jerry Wexler. Peter reminisces about his relationship with "Wex" (and with Ray Charles), then follows up with riveting recall of Joe Tex and Jerry Lee Lewis. Pieces by Memphis writer Andria Lisle — one of many Guralnick disciples — brings us on to discussion of Bobby Bland and the late Hi Rhythm section drummer Howard Grimes. We also remember the brilliant Betty Davis and Syl ('Is It Because I'm Black?') Johnson. Finally, Mark quotes from newly-added library pieces about John Lee Hooker, Nik Venet, the Nazz and Simon Napier-Bell, while Jasper notes articles about Norah Jones and Robert Glasper. Bringing things full circle, Barney quotes from Peter's friend Bill Millar's tribute to recently-deceased soul specialist Bob Fisher. Many thanks to special guest Peter Guralnick. Radiokeys' songsters Emily and Stewart get together in their Concord home to tell stories regarding some historical instances of "the man" attempting to suppress musical expression and freedom of speech. Emily kicks it off with the often neglected tale of Hazel Scott. A luminary black, female pianist in her prime at the height of the swing era who dwarfed her peers. Why don't we hear about her? Why isn't her name mentioned alongside the greats? Stewart then talks about the PMRC and their influence over Congress to add Parental Advisory stickers to records as well as their attempt to censor the biggest musical acts of the day. Dee Snider of Twisted Sister was having none of it. Stewart tells the story of how congress underestimated the Hair Metal megastar and how he made them look foolish. While continuing to shelter in place at their Oakland apartment, Emily and Tom get together to discuss what musicians are doing to keep the spirit of live shows going and stay connected to their communities in creative, virtual ways from their homes. They talk about playing their first Zoom gig as part of a virtual happy hour, then they go through a list of some musicians that have blessed us by releasing new music during Quarantine such as the Strokes, Fiona Apple, and Nathaniel Rateliff. There’s even some Rock ’n’ Roll Review alumni that just released surprise music, including Sam Doores and Charley Crockett! Emily and Tom then go on to discuss a very new and exciting project developing within the Concord music scene. Tom is fresh off of a meeting with some fellow Concord musicians who are attempting to put together a virtual music festival with the city of Concord, called Concord Couch Concerts! Emily and Tom also reflect on ways they’ve tried to stay positive, and how musical projects are helping them keep a sense of routine and feel useful. They wrap it up by talking about what Radiokeys is working on, including our weekly song releases as part of our “Shelter Sessions” recording project, developing our YouTube channel, and various video projects! You can find the Shelter Sessions at our BandCamp page! New releases every Wednesday. Welcome to another episode of the Bowie Book Club, where wild speculation and grasping for straws about Bowie’s favorite books has reigned supreme since 2016. This time we read Sweet Soul Music by Peter Guaralnick a compendium of all things related to the musical genre, and most emphatically NOT about Motown.
We are back from the long weekend with a new episode of On Target: It's What's In The Grooves That Count. This hour has everything from Sweet Soul Music to raucous Northern Soul and R&B with some Banana Splits to keep your blood sugar up. This show is all gold, don't miss it!
Aretha Franklin, Cody Chesnutt, Michael Kiwanuka and more...
One of the nice things about being the Top Conservative Podcast is that we get to have the coolest and smartest people on the right stop by to chat. Case in point this week as we welcome two of the biggest brains on the right, Yuval Levin and Dr. Thomas Sowell. Yuval's WSJ essay The Next Conservative Movement is a must read, and while you're at it, order his forthcoming book The Fractured Republic: Renewing America's Social Contract in the Age of Individualism. Re-building the party is topic of Yuval's segment, and we welcome your suggestions in the comments below. With Thomas Sowell, things get a little more somber as he is no fan of the presumptive nominee of the party. The good doctor explains why he's not a fan of The Donald, or of the voters who have propelled him to where he is today. Finally,we send out 90th birthday greetings to Jerry Lewis from a certain podcaster with a French brother-in-law. Guess who.
