What the Riff?!?
1972 - October: Delaney & Bonnie "D&B Together"

What the Riff?!?

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 2, 2025 38:51

One of the more underrated - some might say virtually lost - bands of the early rock era is Delaney & Bonnie.  This singer-songwriter duo is made of session guitarist/vocalist Delaney Bramlett and his wife and former Ikette Bonnie Bramlett.  Just as important as this founding couple is the number of talented musicians they brought into their recordings, with albums often being referenced as recorded by "Delaney & Bonnie and friends."  These "friends" included luminaries such as Leon Russell, Eric Clapton, George Harrison, Duane Allman, Greg Allman, Steve Howe, and Rita Coolidge.  D&B Together is the sixth and final album from Delaney & Bonnie.  Originally entitled "Country Life," the album was delivered to Atco/Atlantic Records behind schedule and rushed into distribution.  Although Atlantic executive Jerry Wexler was a friend of the duo, he didn't think the quality was where it needed to be and withdrew it from the market.  He later sold the contract and the album's master tapes to CBS, who reordered the running sequence and re-released it in March 1972.  In addition to frequent collaborators Eric Clapton, Leon Russell, and Duane Allman, this album also contains the work of "friends" like Dave Mason, Billy Preston, and Tina Turner. Despite the title, Delaney and Bonnie would divorce shortly after the album came out.  Drugs were taking their toll on the couple and their relationship could not survive it.  However, they did have a daughter named Bekka Bramlett, who was a member of Fleetwood Mac from 1993-1995 and had a long career as a backing vocalist in the music industry.Bruce presents this underrated rock/soul album for this week's podcast.Comin' HomeThis song was released in December 1969 by Atco Records (US) and Atlantic Records (international).  It was co-written by Bonnie Bramlett and Eric Clapton, and features Eric Clapton.  It went to number 84 on the US pop charts.  The lyrics are about being on the road and getting ready to come home to the one the singer loves.  Only You Know and I KnowDave Mason originally wrote and recorded this song in 1970, and it became his first charting single, going to number 42 on the Billboard Hot 100.  Delaney & Bonnie re-recorded it and took it to number 20 on the same chart.  This single was released in 1971, another single that came out before the album.  I Know Something Good About YouThis is a deeper cut on the album with an upbeat, funky sound.  It was written by Delaney Bramlett and Joe Hicks.  Groupie (Superstar)Most people recognize this as a hit from the Carpenters, but this is the original.  Rita Coolidge came up with the idea after observing female groupies with rock starts in the late 60's, and the song was written by Bonnie Bramlett and Leon Russell.  It was the B-side to "Comin' Home."  Richard Carpenter picked it up for the Carpenters, and changed some of the lyrics to be less risqué.   ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Main theme from the television series The RookiesThis police action series debuted in October 1972. STAFF PICKS:And You and I by YesWayne leads off the staff picks with an excerpt of the 10+ minute work written by Jon Anderson, Bill Bruford, Steve Howe, and Chris Squire. The entire song consists of four parts, but the first two were released as a single edit which hovered just outside the top 40 on the Billboard charts.   You Wear It Well by Rod StewartRob brings us the first single from Stewart's fourth studio album, "Never a Dull Moment."  It went to number 13 on the Billboard Hot 100, and number 1 on the UK singles chart.  Many consider this an arrangement of Stewarts hit "Maggie May."  As with his previous album, members of the Faces join in as musicians on "Never a Dull Moment."Lean On Me by Bill WithersLynch features a song written and performed by Withers.  It was inspired by his experience growing up in a mining town in West Virginia. The community ethic of that town was something Withers missed when he moved to Los Angeles.  It was the first single from Withers' second album, "Still Bill." Turn to Stone by BarnstormBruce brings us a song inspired by frustration over the Vietnam War, the Nixon Administration, and the protesting that was going on at the time.  Joe Walsh left the James Gang and formed a group called Barnstorm.  The group put out three albums including one with the wonderful title "The Smoker You Drink, the Player You Get."  This song is off the group's self-titled debut album.  COMEDY TRACK:My Ding-a-Ling by Chuck BerryWe close out this week's podcast with Berry's double entendre masterpiece, on the charts in this month.   Thanks for listening to “What the Riff?!?” NOTE: To adjust the loudness of the music or voices, you may adjust the balance on your device. Tomorrow morning I leave for three weeks and I've been desperately trying to come up with topics that would be a bit easier to produce while I'm away. What could be easier than birthdays for this month and next? Well… leave it to your intrepid producer to make that as complicated as it could be. But there's a good reason: so many exceptional singers have birthdays this month and next! In fact, November is so chock full of such artists that I decided to focus exclusively on the Birthday Girls. And what a lineup! Iconic divas like Joan Sutherland and Victoria de los Ángeles; tragically short-lived singers like Saramae Endich and the beloved Lucia Popp; forgotten artists like Kjerstin Dellert, Caterina Mancini, and Geneviève Touraine; exceptional Black artists like Barbara Hendricks and Marietta Simpson: all are represented. And let's not forget the pop divas, both celebrated (Tina Turner, Joni Mitchell, Bonnie Raitt), and less well-remembered (Chi Coltrane, Bonnie Bramlett). And that's just the tip of the iceberg. So lift a glass, cut a piece of Geburtstagkuchen, and tune in to Countermelody in celebration of these exceptional women! [n.b. This episode was posted before the death of Ned Rorem, who will be properly commemorated in next week's episode.] Countermelody is a podcast devoted to the glory and the power of the human voice raised in song. Daniel's lifetime in music as a professional countertenor, pianist, vocal coach, voice teacher, and journalist yields an exciting array of anecdotes, impressions, and “inside stories.” At Countermelody's core is the celebration of great singers of all stripes, their instruments, and the connection they make to the words they sing. “Tom Gray and Mark Johnson are the rusty, banged up Cadillacs of the slide guitar, side by side coughing up smoke and spitting backwoods dirt, but unswerving in their precision and singular style.” — Tom Clarke, Hittin' the Note“Icouldn't imagine life without being able to play music,” says Delta Moon's Mark Johnson. “We call ourselves lifers. We will play until we simply can't do it any more.”He and bandmate Tom Gray have been doing it a while now, laying down double slide guitar improvisations that often seem downright telepathic. It has been two decades since they started playing together — Mark on bottleneck slide and Tom on lap steel — first in Tom's studio, and then in clubs, coffee shops and barbecue joints around Atlanta. The name Delta Moon came to Mark on a pilgrimage to Muddy Waters' cabin near Clarksdale, Mississippi, when a brilliant full moon rose over the highway. With the addition of bass and drums Delta Moon quickly gathered a wall-full of local “best” awards. After winning the International Blues Challenge in Memphis in January of 2003, the band went on that year to play the prestigious Montreal Jazz Fest and other festivals, theaters and clubs across America and England. They have worked steadily on the road and in the studio ever since, recording critically acclaimed albums and crisscrossing the United States, Canada and Europe. Bassist Franher Joseph joined Delta Moon as a permanent member in 2007, adding a solid pocket and rich bass vocals.Delta Moon won the International Blues Challenge in Memphis in 2003.The Roots Music Association named lead vocalist Tom Gray Blues 2008 Songwriter of the Year. Tom has long been well known in the music industry as a songwriter, having penned Cyndi Lauper's hit “Money Changes Everything” as well as songs recorded by Manfred Mann, Carlene Carter, Bonnie Bramlett and many others.Delta Moon's music has been featured in television programs on Showtime, Lifetime, the Food Network and more.Delta Moon tours extensively in the United States, Canada and Europe.Delta Moon's 2015 album, Low Down, was named one of the year's best by both Downbeat and Blues Music Magazine.Delta Moon's latest album, Babylon is Falling, came out September 21, 2018.“Great grooves, thought provoking lyrics, infectious hooks, sweet slide guitar work and mountains of superb tone….” — No Depression“Exquisite playing and fine songcraft….” — Living Blues“Delta Moon is deep blues with a fury…. En 1966, The Mamas And The Papas, “la familia real de Laurel Canyon”, hicieron su debut con el álbum If You Can Believe Your Eyes and Ears y la dieron a conocer a nivel popular en Estados Unidos. Tales of the Road Warriors

ESSRA MOHAWK Pt. 1 Show Notes Essra Mohawk has had a very long and storied career. To describe her music as eclectic is a gross understatement. Her songs run the gamut from pop to avant garden, and in between she covers a lot of bases including rock, folk, folk rock, motown, jazz, tv jingles, rhythm and blues, and beautiful, heartfelt ballads about love and lust. Born Sandra Elayne Hurvitz, her earlier influences were her parents, Anne and Henry.  Through them she grew up listening to an eclectic list of artists such as Judy Garland, Nina Simone, The Coasters, Frankie Lymon and the Teenagers, Little Anthony & the Imperials, Thelonius Monk, Erik Satie, Billy Holiday, Otis Redding, The Beatles, The Stones, Ravi Shankar among others/ In 1964 she released a single as Jamie Carter titled “The Boy With the Way” which I personally think is a really cool song. It pronbably could have been a hit hat it received proper publicity and marketing. Essra sounded a little peeved  talking about it. I don’t blame her, and it would turn  out not to be the first time here career hit a snag or detour. Essra was also the first female member of the Mothers of Invention. In fact, she spent about a year in a relationship with Frank Zappa who thanks to band member Ray Collins suggestion  for a rock star name, dubbed her, Uncle Meat.  When I first met Uncle Meat, she was in Philly on hiatus, and I had no idea who Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention were at the time. I would shortly discover them through Philadelphia DJ Michael Tearson, and eventually make the connection. But, I was happy to finally talk to her again so I could tell her the story of my first Essra Mohawk encounter. At this point, I should probably apologize for hijacking the conversation, for which I was duly busted by Essra. As I mentioned, her career is multifaceted, so the Show Notes page at talesoftheroadwarriors-slash-Essra-Mohawk includes some Essra Mohawk Career Highlights, discography ands links to some of the songs we talked about in this conversation. In my conversation, BTW, I barely scratched the surface of her career, so this is really just a little slice of life in which I hopefully captured some of her essence and got a couple pretty good stories from her. Due to technical  difficulties, I just couldn’t get good enough audio, so I’ll just tell you some things that were to garbled to include in the podcast. I did manage to capture a little about her “crazy courage” as a Philly girl, and her propensity to stick up for others against bullies - and her mom. The main story I was hoping to have her retell was how she was scheduled to be one of the performers  at Woodstock, but her manager missed the turn, causing Essra to miss her debut  on the most well known world stage of all time. A year later Shadow Morton who produced both the Shangri-Las and Vanilla Fudge, discovered her and her music and in1966 the Shangri-La’s recorded Essra’s song “I’ll Never Learn” . Soon after that, her song, “The Spell That Comes After” was recorded by Vanilla Fudge on their “Renaissance” album. In 1967, Essra was discovered once again. This time by Frank Zappa who, after hearing her play was so blown away, he immediately invited her to join his band, The Mothers of Invention, thus making her their first female member. Within a year he signed her and released her first solo album on Verve. While performing with the Mothers, Essra also opened for Cream (their first time in New York), Procol Harum(Keith Reid’s lyrics to “Quite Rightly So” are about Essra), Albert King, Electric Flag, Grateful Dead (their first performance in N.Y.), and Jimi Hendrix. By 1969 Essra was recording her second album in L.A. and S.F. for Reprise after Mo Ostin (then Vice President) discovered her singing at a club in N.Y. and asked her on the spot to come to the label. The result was “Primordial Lovers”, an LP that received a 5 star review in Downbeat, raves in Mix, and was stated as being “one of the best 25 albums ever made” in Rolling Stone magazine. Unfortunately, these reviews came over a year after the release of the album and new fans found it hard to secure the LP due to poor distribution and the sale of the Reprise label following the release. Nevertheless, this critically acclaimed musical work continues to generate a cult following for Essra. In fall of 2000 it was released on CD by Rhino Handmade. She wrote most of the songs while living in Mendocino, California. While recording the album, Essra married her producer, Frazier Mohawk, and from that time on was known as Essra Mohawk. She also sang in a background vocal trio with Carole King. Essra’s third album, released in 1974 on Elektra/Asylum, once again without proper promotion or distribution, led England’s music magazine, Melody Maker, to declare it, “the richest and most unheralded event in American music” that year. After moving back to Philadelphia in the 70’s, Ms. Mohawk continued to sing as a session vocalist. She is especially known for singing on Schoolhouse Rock, the popular educational and musical cartoon series that continues to air on TV. Essra’s vocals are on “Interjections”, “Sufferin’ Till Suffrage”, and “Mother Necessity”. After ABC Video released the cartoons on video in the 90’s, they received an upsurge of popularity and the troupe, led by music director, Bob Dorough, began performing live in the mid-90’s. A new album on which Essra sang wrote and produced a track entitled “Do You Wanna Party” about political parties in the U.S. was released on Rhino in Sept. ‘98 on an album called “Schoolhouse Rocks the Vote”. Ms. Mohawk’s fourth album was released on Private Stock records in 1976. After the same lack of support that has kept Essra’s remarkable music in the shadows, she left the label and moved back to California in 1977. Paul Kantner wanted her to be the lead singer in Jefferson Starship after Grace Slick dropped out for a while but he couldn’t convince the rest of the band to use another female vocalist so they chose a male, Micky Thomas, instead. In 1980-82 Essra performed as a background vocalist with the Jerry Garcia Band. During the same period she co-wrote “Haze” with Bobby Weir and his band “Bobby and the Midnights” for their Atlantic release. Also, Essra has collaborated with Al Jarreau, Bonnie Bramlett, Mark McEntee of the DiVinyls, Eric Bazilian, Al Stewart and Narada Michael Walden. She sang and recorded with John Mellencamp. (He’d seek her out wherever she lived for her advice and encouragement.) Essra’s music and ideas inspired Joni Mitchell’s “Woodstock” (Essra was scheduled to play at the original Woodstock, but her manager missed a turn and they arrived too late. She finally played at the 25th Anniversary at Bethel.) ***David Crosby’s “Deja Vu” was inspired by Essra’s song “I Have Been Here Before”. David would ask her to play it for him whenever he saw her and then wrote “Deja Vu” as a result. In 1982, Essra moved back to Philadelphia from L.A. and was brought into the McFadden & Whitehead pre-production sessions. She conjured up “Not With Me” overnight for the duo and they released it on their Capitol album that year. Essra recorded two more solo albums in the 80’s. Both were released independently and both were produced by her, then, husband Daoud Shaw (Van Morrison’s drummer for many years and original drummer for Saturday Night Live). They first met during those early days on Bleeker St. in New York’s Greenwich Village, where she jammed vocally with jazz greats: Mike Manieri, the Brecker Bros., Eddie Gomez and Jeremy Steig. As a result her vocal style developed more along the lines of a wind instrument than that of a typical pop singer. Being in the Mothers then also helped to propel the youth to such a creative and original stance as a vocalist. Three of her early LPs were reissued on CDs in Japan in spring 2003, followed by her recent tours to California, the East Coast and Japan. Essra’s first album on CD “Raindance” which was released on Schoolkids Records in ‘95 was reissued on Evidence Feb., 2005. Her 1999 CD, “Essie Mae Hawk Meets the Killer Groove Band”, was remastered and reissued on Essra’s own label, MummyPump, in 2003. Essra’s been living in Nashville, TN since 1993 where she continues to write and record, playing her music on piano, mandolin and guitar. Keb’ Mo’, Steve Cropper and Bonnie Bramlett are among the stellar performers who joined Essra on her 2003 Evidence CD “You’re Not Alone”. Her songs were used on the CBS series Joan of Arcadia in 2004 and 2005. The book, “Hotel California” is one of many books about music that mentions Essra.

From his Dove Award winning gospel albums to his genre-defining Southern rock anthems and his CMA Award-winning country hits, few artists have left a more indelible mark on America's musical landscape than Charlie Daniels. An outspoken patriot, beloved mentor to young artists and still a road warrior at age 79, Charlie has parlayed his passion for music into a multi-platinum career and a platform to support the military, underprivileged children and others in need. Raised among the longleaf pines of North Carolina, Charlie began his career playing bluegrass music with the Misty Mountain Boys. After moving to Nashville in 1967, he began making a name for himself as a songwriter, session musician and producer. Elvis Presley recorded a tune Charlie co-wrote titled “It Hurts Me,” which was released on the flip side of “Kissin' Cousins.” He played on such landmark albums as Bob Dylan's Nashville Skyline and tried his hand at producing on the Youngbloods' Elephant Mountain and Ride the Wind. His own unique voice as an artist emerged as Charlie recorded his self-titled solo album in 1970 for Capitol Records. Two years later he formed the Charlie Daniels Band and the group scored its first hit with the top ten “Uneasy Rider.” Since then the CDB has populated radio with such memorable hits as “Long Haired Country Boy,” “The South's Gonna Do It Again,” “In America,” “The Legend of Wooley Swamp” and of course, his signature song, “The Devil Went Down to Georgia,” which won a Grammy for Best Country Vocal Performance by a Duo or Group in 1979 as well as single of the year at the Country Music Association Awards. The CDB will perform 100 concert dates this year including performances on the Grand Ole Opry. The band's latest release, "Off the Grid - Doin' It Dylan," features 10 Bob Dylan songs by the CDB, and is their first CDB studio release since 2007. “I love what I do,” says Charlie of his 50-plus years in the music business. “I look forward to entertaining people. When show time gets here, I'm ready to go, ready to go play for them. It's a labor of love. I just thank God I make a living at what I enjoy doing.”-2- Whether performing in the hit 80s movie Urban Cowboy, singing on Easter Sunday at his local church or leading an all-star cast at one of his famed Volunteer Jams, Charlie just exudes joy whenever he steps on stage and he's always been quick to provide a platform for other artists to shine. In 1974 he invited some friends to join him at Nashville's War Memorial Auditorium for an all-star concert he dubbed The Volunteer Jam. The event continued for years and was broadcast in the U.S. and internationally. Over the years, the Jam featured a diverse line up that included Willie Nelson, Ted Nugent, Roy Acuff, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Crystal Gayle, James Brown, Emmylou Harris, Amy Grant, George Thorogood, Kris Kristofferson, Little Richard, Tammy Wynette, Alabama, Oak Ridge Boys, B. B. King and the Allman Brothers. As diverse as his live shows have always been, his discography has also reflected Charlie's love of multiple genres. In 1994 he released his first Christian album, The Door, on Sparrow Records. The album won the Gospel Music Association's Dove Award for Best Country Album and “Two Out of Three” was named video of the year by the Christian Country Music Association. In 1997, Sony Wonder released Charlie's first children's album, “By The Light of The Moon: Campfire Songs and Cowboy Tunes'. An astute businessman as well as talented musician, Charlie launched Blue Hat Records in 1997 with his longtime personal manager David Corlew. Over the past 15 years, the label has released such memorable albums as Blues Hat, Tailgate Party, Road Dogs, Fiddle Fire: 25 Years of the Charlie Daniels Band and his first bluegrass album 2005's Songs From the Longleaf Pines and 2007's album Deuces, featuring duets with Brad Paisley, Gretchen Wilson, Bonnie Bramlett, Travis Tritt, Dolly Parton, Vince Gill,...

I met Ricky Byrd back in the daze… when we were both in a daze… I was booking the Rock’ N Roll Café on Bleecker Street. Ricky was already a rockstar, center stage with Joan Jett ~ Blackheart lead guitarist, playing those iconic riffs in the great MTV Music Video Days. Ricky Ricky has recorded, toured and/or has performed with Roger Daltrey, Ian Hunter, Southside Johnny, Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Joe Walsh, Mavis Staples, Billy Squier, Darlene Love, Ronnie Spector, Brian Wilson, Steve Miller, Graham Nash, Don Felder, Alice Cooper, Bruce Springsteen, Steven Van Zant, Mick Taylor, Dion, Elvis Costello, Bonnie Bramlett, Billie Joe Armstrong, Bill Medley, Paul Shaffer, Smokey Robinson and many others. Two years ago Ricky was inducted into the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame. An honor which befalls the very best, and the very few. More importantly, 29 years ago, he got sober. For the past 9 years, using music to help others follow in kind has been his life’s passion, and now, his work. Ricky Byrd’s Clean Getaway, a non-profit he started, provides concert events, music outreach sessions, and early education and prevention programs, to raise awareness about the disease of addiction and to provide resources for those suffering from drug and alcohol addiction. More info here: http://www.pledgemusic.com/projects/rickybyrd As a sober woman in recovery, Ricky’s plight and his passion are close to my heart. We now party like it’s 1869. Basically an old Borscht Belt Jew at heart, this RockBoy is all about rock, bling and egg creams. We talk rock, rock stars, getting high, and getting straight. A lotta laughin' was goin' on...
