(First aired on WUTC 4/13/24)Call Me Spinster is one part kaleidoscopic indie rock, one part porchy holler pop — and every bit a family operation. The brainchild of three sisters in Chattanooga, Tennessee, Call Me Spinster skims nostalgia from psychedelic folk to 90's synth-pop, weaving frank vocals with ethereal harmonies to make sense of their constantly growing world.Band practice for Call Me Spinster is not your typical beer-fueled midnight garage rock. It starts at 10 a.m. A 7-month-old chews an XLR cord in the corner. A toddler naps in the next room over the screech of bass amps and keyboards. The sisters pause constantly to breastfeed, change a diaper, or lull a cranky child back to sleep. The chaos of motherhood would cause most bands to stall, but Call Me Spinster has always rocked with children in the background. When Amelia, the eldest sister, became pregnant with her first child in 2017, she took maternity leave from her teaching job. The same month Amelia's son was born, her sisters Rachel and Rosie quit their respective teaching jobs in Costa Rica and Portland, Oregon and joined Amelia in Chattanooga. The sisters began by tackling Prince and Drake covers on a hodgepodge of acquired instruments — including their Amish grandfather's old accordion, an upright bass, glockenspiel, and even the occasional pie pan. They busked, played brunch gigs and local festivals, then eventually opened for bigger touring acts across the Southeast. When they started applying their unorthodox arrangements to their own songs, they quickly attracted New West/Strolling Bones label head George Fontaine Sr., who connected them with producer Drew Vandenberg (of Montreal, Faye Webster, Toro y Moi) to create their first EP in 2020.“The result is a set of songs that they can certainly be proud of, a series of soft, shimmering melodies that convey both youthful enthusiasm and elegiac indulgence,” wrote American Songwriter.Call Me Spinster's first full-length album, Potholes is due out spring of 2024 on Strolling Bones Records. Tracks range from “nods to Robyn and ‘90s synth pop”… “moments of Minnie Riperton-era Rotary Connection and Air.” Other songs dip into the realm of country - folk, but in an unusually understated, anti-Nashville style, pedal steel or accordion pinging nostalgia but staying out of the way. Lyrics present a gentle, sometimes starkly candid view of domestic life. While the inspirations are raw, there is no shortage of technicolored joy on this album. Call Me Spinster underscores emotional depth with bouncy electropop that makes you want to dance in public.Call Me Spinster Tracklist:Feet are DirtyPotholesNo Yield SignMuleBorn in a DitchStandbyWhite LinesOther Artists Tracklist:Joni Mitchell – "California"Simon and Garfunkel – "The Only Living Boy in New York"The Clash – "Lost in the Supermarket" The Diddys – "Intergalactic Love Song" Hosted on Acast. I'm a bit sad as I prepare this one that just replayed last week on Tales Vinyl Tells. It does have some great music with an opening message that is so appropriate for how I feel doing these shows and turning them into podcasts. That song is Lovely to See You Again by the Moody Blues. And even though I can't really see you on the radio or on the podcast, I feel you there. I can see that you are downloading the podcasts and you send emails telling me where in the world you are. I thank you for that. What I'm really sad about is that we've suffered some serious losses to the grim reaper lately. Losing David Crosby was a lot to handle. Now we've recently lost Randy Meisner, Sinead O'Connor and this week it was notification of Robbie Robertson's death. I'm saluting them soon with music. For now, we can grieve, we can mourn. My lady and I sat and played Scrabble last night and listened to some of the great music that The Band recorded. Just so entertaining! And if you want to see what Robertson did in his life, you should read his obit. Busy guy. Not liked by all his bandmates but someone has to be in charge, and it was him. Enough with the sadness. Today's mix runs from Garfunkel and his then-bud, Rotary Connection, The Morrison boys together again, Ziggy and more. Next week at 5 Central time on RadioFreeNashville.org, it'll be Day 3 of the Peacock with Grand Funk RR, Loggins and Messina and The Rolling Stones! Great music from the 60s and 70s!! Replays can be heard and downloaded on StudioMillsWellness.com and most anywhere you get your podcasts. Episode 88 The Theremin Part 1: From the Beginning to 1970 Playlist Leon Theremin, “Deep Night” (1930 Les Actualités françaises). Soundtrack from a short, early sound film of Leon Theremin playing an RCA production model Theremin. Zinaida Hanenfeldt, Nathaniel Shilkret, Victor Salon Orchestra, “Love (Your Spell is Everywhere)” (1930 Victor). RCA theremin, Zinaida Hanenfeldt; Victor Salon Orchestra conducted by Nathaniel Shilkret. The earliest records made with the Theremin were recorded in 1930 to highlight the release of the RCA Theremin. This was one of the first. This recording session dates from January 17, 1930 and was made in New York at the 28 West 44th St. studio. Billed as a recording of “Orchestra, with theremin soloist,” this was most likely made as a demonstration of the newly introduced RCA Theremin. Seven months later, Lennington Shewell (see next listing) took up making several demonstration records produced by his father, RCA VP G. Dunbar Shewell in the Camden, NJ recording studios. Lennington H. Shewell, “Dancing with Tears in My Eyes” (1930 Victor). Recorced on July 21, 1930, in Camden, NJ Studio 1. Theremin solo, Lennington H. Shewell; piano accompaniment, Edward C. Harsch. Noted as "R.C.A. theremin: Instructions and exercises for playing" and "G. Dunbar Shewell, present." Lennington H. Shewell, “In a Monastery Garden” from “Love Sends A Gift Of Roses” / “In A Monastery Garden” (1935 Victor). Shewell was an American pianist songwriter and Thereminist. He recorded several discs for RCA . Shewell was employed by RCA to travel around the USA demonstrating the Theremin as part of its marketing campaign. His father was George Dunbar Shewell, who was a vice-president of RCA for a time. Clara Rockmore, “The Swan” from Theremin (1977 Delos). Piano, Nadia Reisenberg; Produced by Robert Moog, Shirleigh Moog; Theremin, Clara Rockmore. Rockmore, of course, was the key master of the Theremin back in the 1930s and 40s, having originally learned from Leon Theremin himself. These recordings were later produced by the Moogs in the 1970s and feature some dazzling, virtuoso performances by Rockmore as she interprets many of her favorite classical works. “The Swan” was composed in by Camille Saint-Saëns (1983-1921) that was usually a showcase for a cellist and, with Rockmore's brilliant interpretation, became a much-loved work by Thereminists. Even Samuel Hoffman made a recording of it. Clara Rockmore, “Berceuse” from Theremin (1977 Delos). Piano, Nadia Reisenberg; Produced by Robert Moog, Shirleigh Moog; Theremin, Clara Rockmore. Here Rockmore interprets a piece by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky (1840-1893). Lucie Bigelow Rosen, “Concerto in F” b Mortimer Browning (1940, privately recorded practice session). Ms. Rosen recorded this rehearsal in preparation for a live performance. Of great interest is that you can hear her speaking at the beginning and end of the session, and her playing is quite sophisticated. Lucie Bigelow Rosen, “The Old Refrain” by Fritz Kreisler (circa 1940 privately recorded session). Another privately recorded session by Ms. Rosen. Miklós Rózsa, Suite from The Lost Weekend (excerpt) from The Lost Weekend (The Classic Film Score) (1945 privately issued). Conducted, composed by Miklós Rózsa; Theremin, Dr. Samuel J. Hoffman. “This is a limited-edition recording, produced for the promotional purposes of the composer and is not licensed for public sale. The music was transferred to tape from the original acetate masters.” This was not a score released on a conventional soundtrack. This recording comes from a privately issued disc commissioned by the composer and I date it to around 1970. I wanted to include it because it a notably obscure soundtrack recording Theremin playing by Hoffman from the same era as the more famous and widely distributed Spellbound soundtrack. Harry Revel and Leslie Baxter with Dr. Samuel J. Hoffman, “Lunar Rhapsody” from Music Out Of The Moon: Music Unusual Featuring The Theremin (1947 Capitol). Hoffman, a foot doctor by profession, was one of the best-known Theremin players of his time. Not as persnickety as Rockmore about playing “spooky sounds,” he basically filled a gap in Theremin playing in popular music that Clara Rockmore refused to fill. He played one of the RCA production model Theremins from 1930. His most famous contributions included collaborations with Les Baxter, Miklos Rozsa, Harry Revel, and Bernard Herrmann, and his momentous movie music for Spellbound (1945) and The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951). He was initially a classically trained violinist, and at age 14 he began playing the violin professionally in New York City. By 1936, he had taken up the Theremin and begun featuring it in publicity for his engagements. He quickly gained notoriety using the electronic instrument and he became one of the world's most famous Theremin players. Harry Revel and Leslie Baxter with Dr. Samuel J. Hoffman, “Radar Blues” from Music Out Of The Moon: Music Unusual Featuring The Theremin (1947 Capitol). Harry Revel, Leslie Baxter & Dr. Samuel J. Hoffman, “Fame” from Perfume Set to Music (1948 RCA Victor). Composed by Harry Revel; Orchestra Chorus conducted by Leslie Baxter; Theremin, Dr. Samuel J. Hoffman. "As interpreted by the British-born composer, Harry Revel, in a musical suite describing six exotic Corday fragrances." Harry Revel, Leslie Baxter & Dr. Samuel J. Hoffman, “Obsession” from Perfume Set to Music (1948 RCA Victor). Composed by Harry Revel; Orchestra Chorus conducted by Leslie Baxter; Theremin, Dr. Samuel J. Hoffman. "As interpreted by the British-born composer, Harry Revel, in a musical suite describing six exotic Corday fragrances." Elliot Lawrence and His Orchestra, featuring Lucie Bigelow Rosen, “Gigolette” (1949 Columbia). An attempt to bring the Theremin into popular music, this recording by Elliot Lawrence and his Orchestra made at the Columbia 30th Street Studio in Midtown Manhattan features Lucie Bigelow Rosen. Ms. Rosen and her husband Walter were instrumental in providing offices for Leon Theremin to work in New York during the 1930s. The inventor personally made two instruments for her. She was a practiced enthusiast and did much concertizing with the Theremin from about 1935 to 1940. Samuel J. Hoffman, “Remembering Your Lips” from Music for Peace of Mind (1950 Capitol). Orchestra conducted by Billy May; composed by Harry Revel; Theremin, Dr. Samuel J. Hoffman. “Music for PEACE OF MIND featuring the THEREMIN with orchestra.” Samuel J. Hoffman, “This Room Is My Castle of Quiet” from Music for Peace of Mind (1950 Capitol). Orchestra conducted by Billy May; composed by Harry Revel; Theremin, Dr. Samuel J. Hoffman. “Music for PEACE OF MIND featuring the THEREMIN with orchestra.” Bernard Herrmann, Dr. Samuel J. Hoffman, “Gort,” “The Visor,” “The Telescope” from The Day the Earth Stood Still (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) (1951 20th Century Fox). Soundtrack recorded at the Twentieth Century Fox Scoring Stage August 1951, reissued in 1993. Composed by Bernard Herrmann; Conducted by Alfred Newman, Bernard Herrmann, Lionel Newman; Theremin by Dr. Samuel J. Hoffman. Hoffmnan played one of the RCA production model Theremins from 1930 but by this time around 1950 had modified it to include an external speaker connection for improved recording of the instrument during studio sessions. Samuel J. Hoffman, “Moonlight Sonata” (Theremin Solo with Piano Accompaniment) (1951 Capitol). Eddie Layton, “Laura”, from Organ Moods in Hi-Fi (1955 Mercury). This song is noted as including the “Ethereal sound of the theremin.” Layton was a popular Hammond organ player, later on in his career he played the organ at old Yankee Stadium for nearly 40 years, earning him membership in the New York Sports Hall of Fame. This is his first album, one many, and is notable for using some early organ electronics. “It must be stated that all of the sounds in this album were created by Eddie Layton solely on the Hammond Organ including the rhythm sounds of the bass and guitar, by means of special imported electronic recording devices and microphones.” With the exception of the Theremin, I would add. An unknown Theremin model, most likely vacuum-tube driven, possibly an original RCA model. Monty Kelly And His Orchestra with Dr. Samuel J. Hoffman, “Blue Mirage” from “Blue Mirage”/ “That Sweetheart of Mine” (1955 Essex). Single release from this Orchestra led by Monty Kelly and featuring Hoffman on Theremin. Unknown Artist, “The Fiend Who Walked the West” lobby recording (1958). Theremin or musical saw? This is from an LP recording I have that was used in movie lobbies to entice people to come and see the horror film, The Fiend Who Walked the West (1958). Could this be a Theremin, or a musical saw? I think the latter. I have no information on who played the instrument, but it makes for some curious listening from days gone by while acknowledging one of the key sources of confusion for those who collect Theremin recordings. Sonny Moon And His Orchestra, “Countdown” from “Rememb'ring”/ “Countdown” (1958 Warner Brothers). A 45-RPM single from this short-lived group od the late 1950s. Includes an uncredited Theremin performance. Milton Grayson and Dr. Samuel J. Hoffman Theremin and Orchestra, “I Paid the Penalty” (1960 Royalty Recording Co.). A 45-RPM single about capital punishment. On one side of the record a San Francisco Attorney speaks about capital punishment. On the other side is this vocal by Grayson that dramatizes the subject. This appears to be some sort of public service announcement, but the disc itself bears no clues. This is the only release on this label. The vocal by Grayson is part sermon, part monolog, part song, with the threatening aura of the Theremin provided by Dr. Hoffman. It is undated, so I'm guessing around 1960 when Grayson was most active. Lew Davies And His Orchestra, “Riders in the Sky” from Strange Interlude (1961 Command). From the early sixties comes this wonderful amalgamation of exotica and space-age instruments. The Theremin is played by none other than Walter Sear, later the manager of the Sear Sound Studio in New York and an influential programmer (and sometimes player) of the Moog Modular Synthesizer. Several members of this band also became associated with the Moog Modular, including Bobby Byrne, Sy Mann, and producer Enoch Light. Bass, Bob Haggart, Jack Lesberg; Cimbalom, Michael Szittai; Drums, George Devens, Phil Kraus; Executive Producer, Enoch Light; French Horn, Paul Faulise, Tony Miranda; Guitar, Tony Mottola; Reeds, Al Klink, Ezelle Watson, Phil Bodner, Stanley Webb; Ondioline, Sy Mann; Theremin, Paul Lippman, Walter Sear; Trombone, Bobby Byrne, Dick Hixon, Urbie Green. Yusef Lateef, “Sound Wave,” from A Flat, G Flat And C (1966 Impulse!). An innovative first from Mr. Lateef who foresaw the possibilities of the Theremin for new jazz. Lateef was known for his multi-instrumental talent on Tenor Saxophone, Alto Saxophone, Flute, Oboe and a variety of wooden flutes. Using the Theremin on this one track—I've never heard anything else he recorded with the Theremin—shows how a skilled jazz improviser can use the Theremin for self-expression. I would guess that this Theremin was made by Moog. Theremin, Yusef Lateef; Bass, Reggie Workman; Drums, Roy Brooks; Piano, Hugh Lawson; Produced by Bob Thiele. Captain Beefheart And His Magic Band, “Electricity” from Safe as Milk (1967 Buddah). The Theremin in this case was played by none other than Samuel J. Hoffman using his souped-up RCA Theremin model Theremin. It was perhaps the last appearance on record by Hoffman, who died later in 1967. Apparently, the record company hated the track so much that it led to their being dropped from the label, at which point Frank Zappa came to the rescue. Fifty Foot Hose, “War is Over” (1967) from Ingredients (1997 compilation Del Val). Psychedelic rock group from San Francisco, formed in 1967, disbanded in 1970 and re-formed in 1995. Drums, Gary Duos; Guitar, David Blossom; Theremin, Electronics, Audio Generator, Siren, Cork Marcheschi. Recorded in 1966 in San Francisco. Dorothy Ashby, “Soul Vibrations” from Afro-Harping (1968 Cadet Concept). Unknown Theremin player, although the producers at Cadet/Chess were known to add the instrument to a session, such as those by Rotary Connection. Recorded at Ter Mar Studios, Chicago, February 1968. The song was written by producer Richard Evans, then the go-to producer and de facto label head for Chess Records' jazz imprint Cadet. Perhaps he also played the Theremin, which was probably a Moog Troubadour. The First Theremin Era, “The Barnabas Theme from Dark Shadows" / “Sunset In Siberia” (1969 Epic). "Dark Shadows" was super-popular daytime drama about a vampire on ABC-TV. This record was not an official release of the television show, but an interpretation of the theme that is seldom heard. I thought it's exotic funky treatment was especially worth hearing. The soundtrack for the TV show also included Theremin, possibly played by composer Robert Cobert, but in its more traditional spooky role. This record was produced and arranged by Charlie Calello, a well-known producer who had worked with the Four Seasons (singing group) and later would produce such super stars as Frank Sinatra, Neil Diamond, Bruce Springsteen, Laura Nyro, and Barbra Streisand. Mutantes, “Banho De Lua (Tintarella Di Luna)” from Mutantes (1969 Polydor). Brazilian folk-rock-psychedelic group that featured the Theremin blended with many other instruments, both acoustic and electronic. Arranged by, Mutantes; Drums, Sir Ronaldo I. Du Rancharia; Theremin, electronic Instruments, Claudio Régulus. This innovative pop trio from Brazil also collaborated with other artists such as Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil and were threatened by the military government of Brazil. What Theremin did they use? Several Moog models would have been available, but they also may have built their own. One photo I've seen suggested that they built their own. Lothar and the Hand People, “It Comes on Anyhow” from Machines: Amherst 1969 (2020 Modern Harmonic). Live recording from 1969 featuring the Moog Modular Synthesizer played by Paul Conly and the Moog Theremin played by vocalist John Emelin. On this track, the synthesizer and Theremin sounds are intermingled, making it a fun challenge to distinguish between the two of them. Bass, Rusty Ford; Drums, Tom Flye; Guitar, Kim King; Keyboards, Moog Modular Synthesizer, Paul Conly; Vocals, Moog Troubadour Theremin (“Lothar”), John Emelin. Lothar and the Hand People, “Today Is Only Yesterday's Tomorrow” from Machines: Amherst 1969 (2020 Modern Harmonic). This track was recorded live in 1969. John Emelin starts by introducing the Moog Theremin, called “Lothar.” Bass, Rusty Ford; Drums, Tom Flye; Guitar, Kim King; Keyboards, Moog Modular Synthesizer, Paul Conly; Vocals, Moog Troubadour Theremin (“Lothar”), John Emelin. Opening background tracks: Bernard Herrmann, Dr. Samuel J. Hoffman, “Prelude, Outer Space” (excerpt), from The Day the Earth Stood Still (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) (1951 20th Century Fox). Soundtrack recorded at the Twentieth Century Fox Scoring Stage August 1951, reissued in 1993. Composed by Bernard Herrmann; Conducted by Alfred Newman, Bernard Herrmann, Lionel Newman; Theremin by Dr. Samuel J. Hoffman. Zinaida Hanenfeldt, Nathaniel Shilkret, Victor Salon Orchestra, “(I'm a dreamer) Aren't we all?” (1930 Victor). “Orchestra, with theremin soloist.” Theremin, Zinaida Hanenfeldt. Recorded January 17, 1930 in New York at the 28 West 44th St. studio. Samuel J. Hoffman, “The Swan”( Saint-Saens) from “Moonlight Sonata” / “The Swan” (1951 Capitol). Arranged and performed on the Theremin by “Dr. Hoffman.” Orchestra and Chorus Under the Direction Of Leslie Baxter, Dr. Samuel Hoffman, “Struttin' with Clayton” from “Jet” / “Struttin' With Clayton” (1950 RCA Victor). This podcast is not intended as a thorough history of the Theremin itself. There are many excellent resources that provide that, including my own book on the history of electronic music, the Bob Moog Foundation website, Albert Glinsky's wonderful book about Leon Theremin, and the entire Theremin World website that is devoted to everything Theremin. I urgently suggest that you consult those resources for more detail on the actual history of the instrument and the people behind it. Opening and closing sequences voiced by Anne Benkovitz. Produced by Keith Olsen; written by Greg Lake, Peter Sinfield; vocals, Bass, Acoustic Guitar, Electric Guitar, Greg Lake; Drums, Percussion, Carl Palmer; Hammond organ, Piano, Moog Synthesizer, Keith Emerson. This is the original version released in 1975 with a choir and Moog Modular. It differs significantly from the stripped-down mix, also included on this CD, originally appearing on Works Vol. 2 in 1977 and then later in 1994. Rhino Records was kind enough to package all of ELP's X-Mas related tunes onto a CD EP in 1995, from which this version comes. 3:34 Keith Emerson, “Troika (From Prokofiev's Lieutenant Kije Suite)” from The Christmas Album (1995 Rhino). This is the Prokofiev composition that Greg Lake adapted into “I Believe in Father Christmas.” Later on, Emerson released this interpretation of the Prokofiev piece on The Christmas Album” that appeared in the US in 1995. It doesn't appear on the original UK version in 1988. And again, this is taken from the nifty holiday CD EP also released in 1995 by Rhino. This album was made with instruments from Korg, Ensoniq, Alesis, and Opcode. 4:19 Jean Jacques Perrey and Sy Mann, “Jingle Bells” from Switched on Santa (1970 Pickwick). Moog Modular Synthesizer, Sy Mann; Moog Modular Synthesizer Programmed by, Jean-Jacques Perrey. 1:44 Douglas Leedy, “The Coventry Carol” from A Very Merry Electric Christmas to You (1970 Capitol). Moog Modular Synthesizer and Buchla Synthesizer. 4:46 Jean Jacques Perrey and Sy Mann, “Christmas Bells” from Switched on Santa (1970 Pickwick). Moog Modular Synthesizer, Sy Mann; Moog Modular Synthesizer Programmed by, Jean-Jacques Perrey. 1:52 Don Voegeli, “Chanukah” from Holiday & Seasonal Music (1977 EMI). Produced at the Electrosonic Studio of the University of Wisconsin-Extension. Don wrote the original synthesized version of the NPR “All Things Considered” theme. It was created in his Electronic Studio of the University of Wisconsin. He used a Moog Modular Synthesizer plus a Fender Rhodes, Polymoog, and ARP string synthesizer and 16-track recorder. 1:02 Joseph Byrd, “Christmas in the Morning” from A Christmas Yet to Come (1975 Takoma). ARP 2600 Synthesizer with an Oberheim Expander Module. 1:34 Douglas Leedy, “Good King Wenceslas” from A Very Merry Electric Christmas to You (1970 Capitol). Moog Modular Synthesizer and Buchla Synthesizer. Leedy was an American composer, performer and music scholar. He founded the electronic music studio at UCLA where he had access to both Moog Modular and Buchla synthesizers, and it was during this period from about 1969-71 that he was commissioned to create several albums of electronic music. His training as a minimalist and experimental composer always flavored his music with unexpected sounds and patterns. 3:05 Moog Machine, “O Holy Night” from Christmas Becomes Electric (1970 Columbia). Moog Modular Synthesizer. 2:43 Armen Ra (Armen Hovanesian), “O Come All Ye Faithful” from Theremin Christmas (2018 Sungod). Moog Etherwave Pro Theremin. Armen Ra is an American artist and performer of Iranian-Armenian descent. He plays Theremin. His music fuses Armenian folk music with modern instrumentation, along with melodic lounge standards and classical arias. 4:43 Don Voegeli, “Carol of the Drum” from Holiday & Seasonal Music (1977 EMI). Produced at the Electrosonic Studio of the University of Wisconsin-Extension. 1:01 Philippe Renaux, “Noël Blanc” (“White Christmas”) from We Wish You A Cosmic Christmas (1977 Sinus). Belgium. Minimoog, Arp Axe, Arp Soloist, EMS Synthesizer, Stringman Crumar, Fender Rhodes, Electronic Drums. 3:21 Jean Jacques Perrey and Sy Mann, “Tijuana Christmas” from Switched on Santa (1970 Pickwick). Moog Modular Synthesizer, Sy Mann; Moog Modular Synthesizer Programmed by, Jean-Jacques Perrey. 1:58 Joseph Byrd, “Carol of the Bells” from A Christmas Yet to Come (1975 Takoma). ARP 2600 Synthesizer with an Oberheim Expander Module. 1:12 Андрій Кок (Andriy Kok), “Небо І Земля” (“Heaven and Earth”) from Різдво На Галичині. Колядки (Christmas in Galicia. Christmas carols) (2006 Ліда). Folk singer, accordion and synth player Andriy Kok has recorded many albums of Ukrainian folk music in addition to a number of holiday songs and carols. 5:00 Douglas Leedy, “In Dulci Jubilo” from A Very Merry Electric Christmas to You (1970 Capitol). Moog Modular Synthesizer and Buchla Synthesizer. 1:14 Bernie Krause, Philip Aaberg, “Deck the Halls” from A Wild Christmas (1994 Etherean Music ). This delightful cassette is from Bernie Krause, known for his Moog explorations with Paul Beaver back in the day. He later turned his attention to audio ecology and the recording of nature sounds, particularly of animals. This very special Holiday recording is composed entirely of animal sounds. Some you'll recognize as the natural animal voices themselves. Others may sound like instruments, but they are actually digitally transformed animal sounds. Wild Sanctuary Productions invites you to enjoy a truly unique celebration of both the wild kingdom and Holiday Spirit. All animal and ambient sounds recorded on location worldwide by Bernie Krause with the exception of the fish (courtesy of U.S. Navy). Animal samples, Bernie Krause and Phil Aaberg. Arrangements, new materials, all keyboards (K 2000/Emulator III) Phil Aaberg. 8:12 The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Paul Freeman, and The Chicago Synthesizer-Rhythm Ensemble, John Tatgenhorst, “The Little Drummer Boy” from Turned On Christmas (1985 Columbia). Conductor, Paul Freeman; synthesizers, The Chicago Synthesizer-Rhythm Ensemble; Orchestra, The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. Keyboards & Synthesizer Concepts: Ed Tossing; Electric Bass, Steve Rodby or Bob Lizik; Drums, Tom Tadke; Guitars, Ross Traut and Bill Ruppert; Percussion, Russ Knutson. 4:08 Montana Sextet, “Little Drummer Boy Jam” from Christmas Time Is Here (1987 Philly Sound Works). Arranged By, Conductor, Producer, Fender Rhodes, Piano, Cowbell, Shaker, Yamaha DX7 Synthesizer, Musser Vibraharp, Vincent Montana Jr.; Congas, Greg Peache Jarman; Guitar, Ronnie James; Snare Drum, Tenor And Bass Drum, Gene Leone. 8:46 Montana Sextet, “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” from Christmas Time Is Here (1987 Philly Sound Works). Arranged By, Conductor, Producer, Fender Rhodes, Piano, Cowbell, Shaker, Yamaha DX7 Synthesizer, Musser Vibraharp, Vincent Montana Jr.; Congas, Greg Peache Jarman; Guitar, Ronnie James; Snare Drum, Tenor and Bass Drum, Gene Leone. 4:56 Mannheim Steamroller, “Good King Wenceslas” from Christmas (1984 American Gramaphone). Arranged, conducted, produced by, Chip Davis; Drums, Percussion, Soloist Recorder, Black Oak Hammered Dulcimer, Soprano Dulcian, Crumhorn, Bells, Vocals, Dry Ice, Chip Davis; Lute, Bass, Eric Hansen; Baldwin SD-10 Synthesizer, Harpsichord, Clavichord, Toy Piano, Prophet 5 Synthesizer, Fender Rhodes, Vocals, Bells, Jackson Berkey; Classical Guitar, Twelve-String Guitar, Ron Cooley; Flute, Willis Ann Ross; French Horn, David (High D) Kappy; Harp, Mary Walter; Oboe, Bobby Jenkins; Strings, Bill Ritchie, Grace Granata, Michael Strauss, Michelle Brill, Richard Altenbach, Richard Lohmann, Roxanne Adams, Wayne Anderson. 3:39 Don Voegeli, “Jingle Bells” long, short, and tag from Holiday & Seasonal Music (1977 EMI). Produced at the Electrosonic Studio of the University of Wisconsin-Extension. 1:56 Don Voegeli, “Lully, Lullay - The Coventry Carol” from Holiday & Seasonal Music (1977 EMI). Produced at the Electrosonic Studio of the University of Wisconsin-Extension. 1:01 Fossergrim, “Ave Maria” (2020 Bandcamp). Fossegrim is billed as “Dungeon Synth music from the Adirondack Mountains.” In Scandinavian folklore, Fossergrim is is described as an exceptionally talented fiddler. No fiddles here. I think Fossergrim is one Ian Nichols of Albany, New York. Check out his Bandcamp presence. 3:54 Phillip Fraser, “Rub A Dub Christmas” from Rub-A-Dub Christmas (1985 Tuff Gong). Jamaican reggae recording for the holidays. Piano, Organ, Synthesizer, Bass, King Asher, Steely Johnson. 2:53 Phillip Fraser, “The Lord Will Provide” from Rub-A-Dub Christmas (1985 Tuff Gong). Jamaican reggae recording for the holidays. Piano, Organ, Synthesizer, Bass, King Asher, Steely Johnson. There is some crazy synth material on this track. Despite it being recorded in 1985, it sounds quite analog for a synth. 3:17 Unconditional Loathing, “Carol, with the bells” from Holiday Mood (2018 Bandcamp). Every artist dreams of releasing an album of hit holiday songs that will surprise the world and bring great wealth. This is not that album. But it is remarkably noisy and dark. Check out Unconditional Loathing, from Fargo North Dakota, on Bandcamp. Self-described as “A footnote in the history of Midwestern noise that refuses to completely go away.” 1:51 The Smurfs, “Deck the Halls” from Merry Christmas With The Smurfs (1983 Dureco Benelux). This album is in English from the Netherlands. 2:17 Vatto Lofi, “Holiday Lofi” from A Merry Lofi Christmas EP (2021 Bandcamp). Providing a low-fidelity tune for the holidays, but I don't know if “lofi” refers to the low-fidelity sound that is currently a thing (and it does sound like that) or is the actual name of this Icelandic musician. 2:21 Rotary Connection, “Silent Night” from Peace (1968 Cadet Concept). I think this holiday album from the famed psychedelic soul ensemble was perhaps only their second album. Produced by Charles Stepney and Marshall Chess, I've included this track not only because it features some crazy electric guitar but also because Minnie Riperton's five-1/2-octave vocal range could effectively imitate a Theremin, which begins in this track around 1:30 into it. In an interview I once heard her say that one of her childhood fascinations was imitating that “science fiction stuff” with her voice. Interestingly, Charles Stepney also included a Moog synthesizer, used sparingly, on some Rotary Connection tracks, but I've heard none on this album. Co-producer Marshall Chess often added Theremin to Rotary songs but this is not one of them. It's pure Ripperton. The Rotary Connection vocalists: Bobby Simms, Jim Donlinger, Jim Nyeholt, Minnie Riperton, Mitch Aliota, Sidney Barnes, Tom Donlinger; The studio band, Leader, David Chausow; Bill Bradley, electronic effects; guitar, Bobby Christian; bass, Louis Satterfield; bass, Phil Upchurch; bass vocals, Chuck Barksdale. 3:52 Klaus Wunderlich, “Sleigh Ride” from Multi Orchestral Organ Sound (1982 Teldec). Wunderlich was a prolific musician who mastered the Hammond Organ. Occasionally, he performed with a synthesizer and this track comes from an album not of holiday music but of various favorites, performed in the style of the original artists. This is a Leroy Anderson song arranged in the Anderson style. The MOOS (Multi Orchestral Organ Sound) was produced by the Wersi organ company in Germany. This organ/synth/drum machine hybrid was also known as the Wersi Galad and play both synth and traditional organ sounds. There is a current musician advocate for this instrument in Florian Hutter (listen to the next track), of Germany. 3:11 Florian Hutter, “Frosty the Snowman” privately released (2022 No Label). Florian is a living master of the vintage Wersi Delta and Atlantis synthesizer/organ hybrids with a built-in rhythm box. In recent years he has begun to release his music on Spotify. This is taken from the first or second day of his Christmas Special 2022 during which he releases a new tune every day. I don't normally feature tracks recorded from YouTube, but this was too good to pass by and it fits with the vintage music played in the previous track by Wunderlich. Check him out. 2:34 Edwin Hawkins, “The Christmas Song” from The Edwin Hawkins Christmas Album (1985 Birthright). Produced when the Yamaha DX-7 became the top selling synthesizer on the planet, this is a great example of its tidy, digital sound. Richard Smallwood, keyboards, synthesizer; Edwin Hawkins, keyboards, synthesizer; Joel Smith, Drums and Fender bass; Kenneth Nash, percussion. Sounds like one or two Yamaha DX-7s. 3:57 Ryuichi Sakamoto (坂本龍), “Father Christmas” from Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence (戦場のメ)(1983 Virgin). Music By, Composed By, Performer, Ryuichi Sakamoto. Our best wishes to Mr. Sakamoto who is suffering from Stage 4 cancer. In June he said, “Since I have made it this far in life, I hope to be able to make music until my last moment, like Bach and Debussy whom I adore.” 2:06 Bob Wehrman, John Bezjian and Dusty Wakeman, “Ring Christmas Bells” from Christmas Becomes Electric (1984 Tropical Records). Not be confused with an album by the same name by The Moog Machine in 1969. Unnamed synthesizer programmed and performed by Bob Wehrman and John Bezjian. From Marina Del Rey in California. 1:46 Hans Wurman, “Overture Miniature” from Electric Nutcracker (1976 Ovation). This Austrian composer made several remarkable, classically influenced Moog Modular albums from 1969 to 1976. This was one of his last big Moog projects and is difficult to find. 2:54 Hans Wurman, “Danse De La Fee-Dragee ( Sugar Plum Fairy)” from Electric Nutcracker (1976 Ovation). Moog Modular synthesizer, Hans Wurman. 1:33 Hans Wurman, “Danse Des Mirlitons (Flutes)” from Electric Nutcracker (1976 Ovation). Moog Modular synthesizer, Hans Wurman. 2:14 Keith Emerson, Emerson Lake & Palmer, “Nutrocker” (live) from Pictures at an Exhibition (1972 Cotillion). A fitting reworking of Tchaikovsky arranged by Kim Fowley and performed live, Newcastle City Hall, 26 March 1971. Hammond C3 and L100 organs, Moog modular synthesizer, Minimoog, Clavinet, Keith Emerson; bass guitar, acoustic guitar, vocals, Greg Lake; drums, percussion, Carl Palmer. "Nut Rocker", a rock adaptation of The Nutcracker originally arranged by Kim Fowley and recorded by B. Bumble and the Stingers in 1962. 3:48 Richie Havens, “End of the Season” from Alarm Clock (1970 Stormy Forest). A melancholic reflection on life from Mr. Havens, totally synthesized on the Moog Modular by Bob Margoleff. 3:32 Bernie Krause, Philip Aaberg, “Feliz Navidad” from A Wild Christmas (1994 Etherean Music ). This delightful cassette is from Bernie Krause, known for his Moog explorations with Paul Beaver back in the day. All animal and ambient sounds recorded on location worldwide by Bernie Krause with the exception of the fish (courtesy of U.S. Navy). Animal samples, Bernie Krause and Phil Aaberg. Arrangements, new materials, all keyboards (Kurzweil 2000/Emulator III) Phil Aaberg. Percussion on Feliz Navidad performed by Ben Leinbach. 5:37 Opening background music: Jean Jacques Perrey and Sy Mann, “Rudolf the Red-Nosed Reindeer” from Switched on Santa (1970 Pickwick). Moog Modular Synthesizer, Sy Mann; Moog Modular Synthesizer Programmed by Jean-Jacques Perrey. 2:16 Moog Machine, “Twelve Days Of Christmas” from Christmas Becomes Electric (1970 Columbia). Arranged by Alan Foust; Synthesizer Tuner, Norman Dolph; Moog Modular Synthesizer, Kenny Ascher. 3:55 Jean Jacques Perrey and Sy Mann, “Silent Night” from Switched on Santa (1970 Pickwick). Moog Modular Synthesizer, Sy Mann; Moog Modular Synthesizer Programmed by Jean-Jacques Perrey. 1:52 Opening and closing sequences voiced by Anne Benkovitz. Additional opening, closing, and other incidental music by Thom Holmes. See my companion blog that I write for the Bob Moog Foundation For additional notes, please see my blog, Noise and Notations.

We're sitting down with Chicago sisters Eibur, Charlene, and Chanté Stepney, who join us to discuss the work of their father, the late Charles Stepney. As a producer and arranger, Stepney was at the helm for incredible '60s and '70s work with Earth, Wind & Fire, Rotary Connection, The Dells, Muddy Waters, Minnie Riperton, Ramsey Lewis, Terry Callier, and many more before his passing in 1976. But on Step on Step, a mind-blowing new collection from International Anthem, a new vision of Stepney emerges: that of a home recording genius. Propelled by a drum machine and warm synths, the music here was recorded alone on a 4-track in his Southside Chicago basement, it retains the sophistication of his studio efforts but presents his sound in a raw, utterly unvarnished manner. As the Summer of Stepney rolls on, the Stepney Sisters join host Jason P. Woodbury to unpack who Stepney was, his relationship with his wife and partner Rubie, his love of science fiction, and his status as one of hip-hop's most sampled composers.  Thanks for checking out Transmissions. If you dig the show, please consider leaving a five star rating or a review—or just forwarding your favorite episodes to a friend. We're a part of the Talkhouse Podcast Network and you can find us on Patreon. Next week on the show: Gloria de Oliveira and David Lynch sound designer Dean Hurley join us to discuss their new age/cosmic synth album Oceans of Time.

Some of these songs...I can't even find the years they were released.    Drink Your Wine - Free Reign (1968?) Pop/Rock group from Evansville, Indiana. Originally known as The Corvettes. Josef Laufer and the Golem Group - Ďábel diskoték (Disco Duck) (1977) A Czech version of the Rick Dees American hit.  Frantz - Exhibition Tonight (1983) Freddy Cannon with Ron Dante - Down On Beale Street (2019) I have featured both of these guys from time to time. Not always in a flattering light. So it goes.  Ennio Morricone - Here's To You (1971) (feat. Joan Baez) This song, from the movie Sacco and Vanzetti, has its own Wikipedia page. You should read about Sacco and Vanzetti. James Luther Dickinson - John Brown (1972) Linda Sexton - Unborn (197?) Lyn Todd - Devil Woman (1980) Claude Peloquin/Jean Sauvageau - Monsieur l'Indien (Quebec 1974) "Recorded in one take, “Monsieur L’Indien’s” haunting loops were created using an analog/mechanical hybrid: small motors rotated an arm equipped with magnets which triggered pre-programmed sensors featuring snares and bass sounds, like the Wurlitzer Sound Man. Péloquin’s contribution was a haunting spoken-word piece about civilization slowly taking over First Nations by building high voltage electric lines around Monsieur l’Indien’s house. It was a slap in the face of Québec’s government, which had nationalized hydroelectricity some ten years earlier. “Frontiers are the hemorrhoids around a nationalist rash,” says Péloquin." The instrument was called a "Sauvageau machine".  The Emporium - I'm So Glad/Rain/I Dig Rock and Roll Music (1970) The Tremeloes - Yellow River (1970) Traffic - Paper Sun (1967) I love this song. Always did. Steve Winwood was and is amazing. This was Traffic's first single.  Waiting For The Sun - Waiting For the Sun (1978) Golden Half (ゴールデン・ハーフ) - 24,000 Kisses (1972) Wikipedia: Golden Half (Gōruden Hāfu) was an early 1970s J-pop band made up of 5 hafu members including Maria Mori, Eva Mary and Luna Takamura. Golden Half was promoted by Watanabe Productions and was composed in September 1970 to sing and go-go dance on the Fuji TV show BEAT POP. They often sang western pop songs in Japanese and split in 1974. The band appeared in the nightclub scenes in Yasuharu Hasebe's Stray Cat Rock: Sex Hunter where they performed their hit song Kiiroi Sakuranbo ("Yellow Cherry"). WOULD YOU LIKE TO SEE THEIR PERFORMANCE???? As my son would say, this song slaps.  WOULD YOU LIKE TO SEE THE TRAILER???? Trust me. You both do.  Coalkitchen - Keep On Pushin (1977) Listen to the "pushin'" and you'll know it instantly as the hook in the Salt-n-Pepa song to come out years later. Those rap producers were no fools. Thieves. But not fools.  Love - Walk Right In (1974) Yes, this is the same Arthur Lee band from psychedelia's heyday. Well, the same brand. Just totally different musicians.  Charles Wilp - Werbung als Kunst - Afri Cola Werbung (1968) Another video you HAVE to see.  "Sexy-mini-super-flower-pop-op-cola - everything is in Afri-Cola... " Famous models from the 1960s such as Marianne Faithfull, Amanda Lear, Donna Summer, Marsha Hunt [Ed: whom I have featured on this show many times - she had Mick Jagger's baby...] were depicted behind a pane of glass with ice crystals on advertising motifs for the rap-like slogan. According to Wilps, the idea for this arose during a visit to the Marshall Space Center in Huntsville (Alabama), where the Saturn V rocket was built at the time: The frozen, liquid oxygen stored in the workshop led to the formation of ice flowers on the windows of the moving cabins, behind the employees had hung pin-up photos of the 1960s beauties. Project 122 Featuring Charlie Green - Bus Stop (Electric Slide) (1990)  Odyssey 5 ‎– Everybody's Complaining (1974) Speed Glue Shinki - Calm Down (1972) Springbok - Night Fever (1978) A South African recording in the spirit of "Now That's What I Call Music", but it predated it. Except none of these recordings are by the original artists. They're cheap knockoffs.  The Christopher Hayes Movement - Tribute To Jimi (1970) Marsha Hunt's 22 - Medusa (1973) The Equals - Black Skin Blue Eyed Boys (1970) Written by Eddie Grant, who, as POACA recall, had a hit with "Electric Avenue".  The Piglets - Johnny Reggae (1971) Written, produced, and directed by Jonathan King, a relatively big deal in the UK (he came up with the "Ooga Chacka" intro to "Hooked On A Feeling" which was the hook for the US hit by Blue Swede) but in the US his only hit was "Everyone's Gone To The Moon" in 1967. He was another version of Kim Fowley, ever-teetering on the edge of an entire era without actually making any sort of big artistic difference.  The Surfers - Windsurfin' (1978) It takes about 16 years for a trend to make it from the US to Sweden, I guess.  The Wildweeds - I'm Dreaming (1968) Cadet Concept was the same label that featured Rotary Connection.  Tony Fabbri - Tony The Cool Casanova (197?) I can find very little information on this guy, but I like this song for some reason.  C.W. McCall - Kidnap America (1980) C.W. McCall was a character created by musician Billy Dale, for his advertising agency. The character was created for and first appeared in a commercial for Old Home Bread. Then, with producer Chip Davis, later to be famous for Mannheim Steamroller, he recorded a smash hit in the '70s with their CB/Trucker song, Convoy. This particular song was recorded in response to the hostage crisis in Iran from the previous year. Its effect remains to be fully measured.  Moon Blood - Come Out Of Her (1970) Patrice Manget/Blue Gene Tyranny - Condom Sense (1981) Title song to a safe sex education film from 1981. The Residents - Loss of Innocence (1980) My second favorite Residents song. This album featured 40 minute-long songs. The album featured guest singers like Andy Partridge of XTC, Lene Lovich, and David Byrne of Talking Heads. Yes, THAT David Byrne.  Amusement parks are caked with sounds A solid hunk of meat A barker's sweat flings from his tongue His tattoo shines with heat A wary stranger stands and sways Enraptured by his stance Two-headed goats come stumbling by And give a troubled glance The barker looks into the eyes The stranger tries to bend The barker swears to more delights For all who seek within The stranger enters canvas doors And smells the fresh-cut hay The barker points to Siamese twins The stranger looks away The eyes of horse-faced women Watch the few who wander through They sense the tension in the air And smell the sweet taboo A heart beats fast against a chest The stranger leaves the tent The waves of people drown the sounds Of loss of innocence

Amon Düül II - Kismet (1978) From Wikipedia: Amon Düül began in 1967 as a radical political art commune of Munich-based artists calling themselves, in part, after the Egyptian Sun God Amon. The word Düül originally had no intended meaning.  The commune attained underground popularity for its free-form musical improvisations, performed around the happenings and demonstrations of the youth movement at the time. The commune had a liberal attitude to artistic freedom, valuing enthusiasm and attitude over artistic ability, and as a result, band membership was fluid; anyone who was part of the commune could be part of the group. They issued a declaration: "We are eleven adults and two children which are gathered to make all kinds of expressions, also musical."[5] A faction within the commune was more ambitious, conventional, and musically structured than the commune society overall. This led to a split within the collective, and in September 1968 they performed at the International Essen Song Days—Germany's first underground festival—as two groups, "Amon Düül" and "Amon Düül II", at the suggestion of drummer Peter Leopold. Amon Düül engaged in exuberant open-ended experimentation that at times equaled their psychedelic rock equivalents in countries such as the USA or Brazil (e.g. [Ed: The vastly better] Os Mutantes), with a focus on political activities. The members were close to Kommune 1 in Berlin and boasted, for a time, a prominent member in the model and activist Uschi Obermaier. Amon Düül signed a contract with the firm "Metronome Records", and continued for seven years with varying degrees of success and in various guises. They wound down in 1973 after releasing four official albums (and a posthumous fifth), though all except one were recorded at the 1968 sessions for their debut. Apparently, the man responsible was producer Peter Meisel, who released the albums without the band's approval in an attempt to capitalize on the success of Amon Düül II. The LPs are these days regarded as unique, if unessential, records in the history of German rock. In contrast, their Paradieswärts Düül album featured a pastoral, folk-influenced sound. The name 'Amon Düül' was trademarked by Chris Karrer and Peter Leopold of Amon Düül II, meaning that re-issues of Amon Düül's albums required to license the name from them. Like so so so so so many acts of the day, Amon Düül started out with a pure, sincere (if unlistenable) concept and ended up doing disco. Carole King - Disco Tech (1978) And ended up doing disco! During the nadir of her career, Carole King recorded with a band named Navarro, which co-wrote this dreck. They themselves put out two albums in the later '70s and faded away. Carole King returned in the video era with a song called "City Streets" which, to my ears, sounds so trite and overproduced that it literally means nothing. Her fella at the time died shortly after this was recorded. That's him on the cover.  Hello People - Future Shock (1974) Hello People - Destiny (1974) Hello People - Creego (1974) Two versions. One produced by Rundgren, and the other (somehow...better) recorded at home with fine TEAC equipment.  With the rock-steady guidance of Todd Rundgren and the big break of being asked to team up with TEAC to show off the possibilities of new reel-to-reel home recording technology, it seemed like a match made in heaven. Bowie. Alice Cooper. Peter Gabriel. Mime Rock was due. Alas, it was not to be. I am the proud owner of both of these records, and I feel very, very alone. And yes, they cover "Just One Victory".  From Discogs:  "Recording demonstration; from microphone placing, editing, balancing, channeling, terminology, sound recording & effects. One full-length song in this recording, it was not recorded inside a Studio; instead, it was fully recorded in someone's house to demonstrate the flexibility of the TEAC multi-track tape record. Many clear examples of what it takes to record a song, all the potential obstacles that come with making a song using all analog instruments. Home recording tips; recording at home with the 3340-S multi-track tape recorder can offer many of the important elements of the studio experience without the bill. No experience required; you have the opportunity to work ideas in private and to experiment with your own sounds, and learn what you need to know at your own pace. Recording music, like making music, is fun as it is challenging." Daddy Dewdrop - Nanu Nanu  (I Wanna Get Funky Wich You) (1978) His big hit was "Chick-a-Boom (Don't Ya Jes' Love It)". This is a mawkish attempt at a cash-in.  Deftly combining the Mork and Mindy zeitgeist with the Disco zeitgeist, he somehow creates something unlistenable and cheap. His website claims he wrote a song for Ringo Starr. Or that Ringo covered a song of his. That song, "I Wanna Be Santa Claus", was co-written by Mark Hudson, who was the lead singer of The Hudson Brothers, who POACA will remember as the bearded fellow on The Hudson Brothers Razzle Dazzle Show, which aired on Saturday mornings, from September 7, 1974, to August 30, 1975. Chuckie Margolis!!! Ahahahah.....    The brothers released "serious" albums throughout the '70s.  Donny and Marie - I Want It Back (1978) From the movie Goin' Coconuts, which is a graphic retelling of the Dresden bombing. Graphic.  Franki Vallli - Save Me, Save Me (1978) From the album titled, "...Is The Word". Let there be no mistake. He had lots of momentum. Pretty good shelf-life for a '60s singer. His career was revitalized in 1975 with "December, 1963 (Oh, What A Night)" and "Who Loves You". I like Frankie Valli very much. You hear his voice and you know. I think of all the crooners from back then, he deserves his revivals. It didn't hurt to have Barry Gibb behind you in 1978. In a sense, they were contemporaries from different places.  And he was in "The Sopranos".   If after one listen you can't tell who wrote this, you are in the wrong place. Off with you!!!  Gnidrolog - Snails (1972) No one mentions Gnidrolog when they are listing good prog bands. Believe me. I was swimming in the prog for a good decade, and not one soul mentioned them. If I were to compare their two albums to any other artists, it would be Octopus-era Gentle Giant or Gong. I really like them. They didn't last long, but I think their productions were nice. Especially... Gnidrolog - Social Embarrassment (1972) Members Colin Goldring (vocals / guitar) and Stewart Goldring (guitar / vocals) went on to form Pork Dukes, and either ironically or to satisfy a hunger for, you know, the Zeitgeist, made the lyrics base and the music basic. One album and no one cared.  Jay Traynor - Love Is In The Air (1978) Jay Traynor of Jay and the Americans tries to jump onto the Disco train by covering the 1977 hit by John Paul Young. Look carefully at the composers.  Kitty and the Haywoods - Disco FairyLand (1978) Kitty had a long recording history as a background vocalist for such acts as Curtis Mayfield. She was also a member of The New Rotary Connection after Minnie Riperton departed Rotary Connection. Kristie and Jimmy McNichol - Hot Tunes (1978) It was "Little Darlings".  Little Nell - Fever (1978) Too much cocaine will make the dancers dance to everything.  Lenny McDowell - Locomotive Breath (1978) And what better way to bring another award-wanting episode to a close than to play a flute version of "Locomotive Breath".

Episode 016: When Sixteen Sirens Sing: A Celebration of Women in MusicElizabeth Cotten - Wilson Rag (US 1958)A self taught master of the guitar, Cotten played hers upside down - like Hendrix later would - and pioneered finger picking styles that would influence folk musicians for decades to come.Elyse Weinberg - Deed I Do (US 1969) Canadian singer-songwriter who moved to Los Angeles in the late 60's and quickly fell in with the canyon scene, her pal Neil Young not only spurred her move to the West Coast, but is also featured on her album from from which this stunning Bert Jansch cover is taken.  Judy Henske & Jerry Yester - Charity (US 1969)After cutting her teeth with two solo albums for Elektra in the early 60's, this versatile singer recorded the folk-psych masterpiece Farewell Aldebaren with her then husband Jerry Yester.  The album veers in all sorts of directions, but the center of it all is the intense voice of Henske as heard on this mini epic number.GTO's - Do Me In Once And I'll Be Sad, Do Me In Twice And I'll Know Better (Circular Circulation) (US 1969)Girls Together Outrageously are the inventors of the term "groupie" and a motley gang of women who formed a ballet art collective that opened for Frank Zappa around Los Angeles.  Zappa produced an LP for the Girls on his Straight record label, which is one of the most fascinating time capsules of late 1960's Los Angeles. The Goodees - A Little Bit of You  (US 1969)This Memphis band specialized in an updated "girl group" sound and scored a minor hit with their first single "Condition Red". This sweet love song is taken from their only album and captures the Goodees' sound perfectly. The Feminine Complex - Forgetting (US 1969)Also dabbling in girl group territory is this infectious song from these Nashville legends taken from their sole classic album Livin' Love.  The LP offers a variety of different sounds, from sultry ballads to acid rock, but their tight harmonies shine on this adorable pop tune.Minnie Riperton - Oh By the Way (US 1970)Minnie is a superstar who needs little introduction!  This tune is taken from her first solo effort Come Into My Garden which was produced by Charles Stepney - producer of her flagship band The Rotary Connection.  The album's sound is similar, even covering a few of their classics, but the spotlight is solely on Minnie and her incredible voice. The City - All My Time (US 1968)The City was the first vehicle for singer-songwriter Carol King, who would prove to be one of the greatest of her generation.  Their album Now That Everything's Been Said features many of King's early compositions as well her fantastic lead vocals.  This album cut shows that she is already a master of the aching love song this early in the game.Linda Perhacs - Sandy Toes (US 1970)A former dental assistant who was urged to sing by one her clients, Perhacs cut her debut Parallelograms in 1970.  Disappointed by the sound of the vinyl at the time, she then returned to a life away from the music business before returning with follow up albums more than 30 years later after her album became a cult classic.Penny Nichols - Look Around Rock (US 1968)Orange County singer-songwriter who released one album from which this beautiful song  - featuring an incredible jazz inspired middle section - is taken .Karen Dalton - Katie Cruel (US 1971)Folk singer with a haunting voice reminiscent of Billy Holiday, Dalton was an integral part of the Greenwich Village folk scene that inspired so many to pick up a guitar and sing.  Both of her albums are essential listens.

Integral to the Chess Records machine, producer, orchestrator, arranger, writer and prolific musician, Charles Stepney, was one of the brightest musical lights of the 60s and 70s, dying suddenly and tragically young in 1976 at the age of 45. Charles Stepney changed my life. I'm honored to pay him tribute. On this episode of MILESTONES, I'm joined by 7X GRAMMY winning musician and Newport Jazz Festival Artistic Director, Christian McBride, to discuss the legacy of Stepney, the profundity of his unmistakably mystical sound, and the absolute need to lift the names of black orchestrators, in particular, whose respective genius oft times remains in obscurity.

Rotary Connection was an American psychedelic soul band, formed in Chicago in 1966. In addition to their own recordings, including their 1967 debut album Rotary Connection, the band is notable as the backing band for Muddy Waters on his 1968 psychedelic blues album Electric Mud. In the 60's and 70's there were some artists that had only one Billboard Chart hit. But sometimes that lone hit made it all the way to #1. Then, they went and recorded follow-ups, usually in a hurry, and usually at the cost of anything resembling artistic integrity. Here they are. And Ken and I perform the hits themselves. The best is toward the end when we do "The Night Chicago Died".  David Soul - Going In With My Eyes Open (1977) The follow-up to "Don't Give Up On Us Baby". From now on I will just put the previous hit in caps following the year.  John Sebastian - Hideaway (1976) Welcome Back Rick Dees and His Cast of Idiots - Disco-rilla (1977) Disco Duck Alan O’Day - Started Out Dancing, Ended Up Making Love (1977) Undercover Angel Alan O'Day wrote "Angie Baby", a big hit for Helen Reddy, and "Rock and Roll Heaven" which was originally recorded by Climax ("Precious and Few"), but made a hit by The Righteous Brothers. They recorded it again with more contemporary corpses, but I cannot find that version.  Wild Cherry - Baby Don’t You Know (1977) "Play That Funky Music" A mawkish attempt to self-aggrandize and create a mythology to continue their stardom. Well, what a lovely surprise for Creamy this week. The owners of the café decided to close up early and we all had a party to celebrate Creams reaching 46 years of age. Chef baked a cake that would have had Mary Berry shaking with excitement. As for the owners, they did Creamy a mix tape of some tunes that were released the year of his birth. This included Gary Bartz, Esther Phillips, EW&F, Chambers Bros, Eugene McDaniel’s, Johnny Jenkins, Katie Love, Parliament, Quincey Jones, Rotary Connection, Isley Bros & The Stylistics. We then all had a game of spin the bottle but ‘What goes on in Gutbuster, stays in Gutbuster’.   Getting very near the 500 mark on Podbean alone. Thank you all you beautiful people. Have a wonderful week and keep keeping it on the one.   Love Creamy xxx

This episode considers the relationship between improvisation and composition. I speak with Nick Storring about his tactile composition process on his new album Gardens, musicologist Chris Stover on the value and limits of scores as well as his understanding of Beat Span, and Guleph improviser Ben Grossman reflects on his preference for music that disappears. Hear part of his album Macrophone: Aleatoric Solo Duets for Electro-Acoustic Hurdy Gurdy, as well as Fred Ho’s Sweet Science Suite and Rotary Connection’s Magical World. Originally aired on CFRU 93.3FM on October 23, 2014. Sound It Out is hosted by Rachel Elliott who is a PhD candidate in Philosophy at the University of Guelph in Ontario, Canada. Sound It Out is produced in conjunction with the International Institute for Critical Studies in Improvisation. The show explores whether and how improvised music can serve as a basis for discursive inclusivity, the creation of new forms of shared meaning, and more democratic means of connecting with each other. Sound It Out airs on Guelph’s campus and community radio station, CFRU 93.3FM, on alternating Tuesdays at 5pm.

Let's cut to the chase for once... This month’s Finders Keepers Radio Show features GEORGE CLINTON and DENNIS COFFEY in person!!!! If you feel the need to read any further, on our fifth edition we ask Dr. Funkenstein himself about his favourite horror films and quiz him on the first Afro-American occult LP! Then we get "the white Jimi Hendrix" to tell us about the more obscure Sussex artists like Paul Parrish and Priscilla Coolidge while discussing his cassette only rap collection and dropping some heavyweight Coffey-breaks in between. Add a sprinkle of overused sound-effects, some O-Level amateur dramatics, tenuous micro-genres and a world record Rotary Connection namedrop count your faithful presenters Andy Votel, Pete Mitchell and Doug Shipton put a lively cast of characters in a big purple box and tie a paisley bow around it with a card that reads PSYCHEDELIC SOUL. These days the indulgent funk records that many of the Finders Keepers crew bought as teenagers are collectively worthy of their own record shop divider and with the help of childhood buddies like Mark "Boney Votel" Rathbone (and Preston soul fiend Stan), cosmic PSSW Jane Weaver, Invisible Spy Benjamin and 808 statesman Graham Massey we lay down a fine blend of obscure, obsessive, obsolete, oblivious and plain obvious spooked-out soul jams and fuzzy funk from around the globe (but mostly from the wild west). So gather round the bearskin rug for all this and much much less without a protective inner sleeve or a bottle of isopropylene in sight. The funky worm has turned... on!

So we are definitely feeling the coming of Spring, the greening of the Earth now easily visible, the blossom on the trees, the energy builds, the coming of new life, the breath of the universe. Well this is the Cosmic Jam, what do you expect, a treatise on the benefits big pharma? No we're dedicated to a more holistic approach in case you hadn't realised. I for one am certainly feeling the benefits of a change of diet recently and adopting an even healthier lifestyle, not that I was wallowing in a trough of fast food and bad habits before!! Does this have an effect on The Cosmic Jam… well I hope a beneficial one if any. Positivity abounds at Forge towers of late, and we're enjoying the music more than ever, I suppose if anything I've had a bit of soulful renaissance, in that it's the SOUL that's tipping my balance, but JAZZ is still there in abundance, perhaps in the not too dim and distant I'll do a dedicated Jazz Jam just to renew my faith. Not that Jazz doesn't gets look in in this week's selection far from it, in fact I programmed a distinctly jazztastic left turn early on in proceedings as I didn't want to get caught up in House music, though I really did want to play the Kyodai remix of Shuya Okino's "Still In Love" which kicks things off after a little acapella affirmation from The Peech Boys. So after that blast of jazz infused club energy, we get the rugged tenor of Bob Berg, the smooth but textured vibes of The Expansions and the invigoratingly fresh Agora Ensemble to complete a first section that definitely holds up the jazz content of this week's show. Brazilian music is so close to my heart and most of the qualities that I admire are present in the Ivan Lins tune "Quadros De Roda" the swing of the Samba is all pervasive, just listen to Lins' piano and imagine how difficult it is to play like that, it's not complicated but the feel, and that word again, swing, are sublime. Melody is also paramount and I love the vocal chorus. So We gets little funkier with a Gal Costa tune from her much ignored but undeniably brilliant eighties period. I had a little exchange with Rainer Truby about these tunes during the week so I was very happy to expand my collection with a copy of her Minha Voz album acquired for a fairly nominal sum, and I soon zoomed in on Musa Cabocla with it's slightly Steely Dan-esque horns and rippling rhythm section. In a world where AOR/ Yacht Rock has suddenly become a hip new sound, (some would say scraping the barrel in search of rare grooves) such Brazilian lushness as this Gal tune is vastly preferable to my ears than some of the obscure bits that are currently changing hands for silly sums. However I have lately developed a penchant for Hawaiian rare groove/soul/ folk-funk, call it what you will there's a distinct flavour to the island's music that I've picked up through my love of Seawind, the band that justifiably crossed over into the US mainstream and various CD reissues that I've picked up in Japan. Seawind, led by the drummer and prolific songwriter Bob Wilson with his wife Pauline on vocals, coupled with the musical wherewithal of Larry Williams and that killer horn section, are definitely way up there in my estimation and not just for their bona fide jazz-dance classics "He Loves You" and "Free", though "Devil Is A Liar" is attune that's always had plays and props from the London cognoscenti, it ticks all the boxes and then some for that Hawaiian sound, like a boogie tune infused with gospel and folk vibes played by a killer jazz-funk ensemble, so good to hear that again. The Nohelani Cypriano tune that follows was a highlight of the recent Floating Points/Love On The Run session at Plastic People, every time I hear that intro I just melt!! Tavares are a band I've studiously ignored through the years, however that all changed when I heard "Ridin High" recently, reminiscent of The Natural Four, it's pedigree vocal harmony business. The Mighty Clouds Of Joy's album was something I bought on spec recently instinctively knowing it would have the kind of gospel-boogie that "Glow Love" turned out to be. Tarika Blue's classic "Truth Is The Key" closes the first hour, just remembering the joy when I first got my grubby mitts on a copy of that album raises a smile now!! I was so obsessed with James Mason's Rhythm Of Life album when I heard about (kind of related) Tarika Blue I went nuts until I eventually connected with a copy! Memories… but the music still sounds great. Some new Jazz worthy of the Cosmic Jam's high standards, and you know I wouldn't kick off the second half of the show with any old rubbish, takes us off into that mesmeric territory that in many ways was first mapped out by the great Sun Ra. Nick Woodmansey aka Emanative who produced Collocutor's "Archaic Morning" is a huge Sun Ra fan and space-jazz evangelist, and for my money he's getting closer and closer to a sound that genuinely embodies that incredible heritage whilst also having a contemporary twist. Archaic Morning is properly tranced out, a good way to drop into another great track from Melanie De Biasio's excellent No Deal, The Flow is deeper than deep, so much so we had to brighten up after that darkening of the mood. And Greetje Kaufeld's version of the devotional "Day By Day" from the gospel rock opera Godspell is one that I adore with it's bonkers big band arrangement . Michael Gregory Jackson's albums are just the kind of left footed soulful music that always fell between the cracks of most tastes back in the day, (as did so much great music, I can remember throwing way Rotary Connection and Lou Bond albums when I worked for Reckless Records in the late eighties because they's been reduced all the way down to 50p and still no takers!) These days these kind of artists are better appreciated for the way in which they threw together so many influences, I love the MGJ's Heart ANd Center album and "Lovin You" just gets better for me, kind of like an East Coast Shuggie Otis. Had to pull out the Dave Valentin album The Hawk, to touch down on "We'll Make Love" with Angela Bofill on vocals, the pair had worked together since being involved in Ricardo Marrero's groups, and you can't mess with the production values of the GRP label, the sound is impeccable, and of course the players Dave Grusin brought through from the jamaica Queens posse, Marcus Miller, Dennis Chambers, Don Blackman, Bernard Wright, wow , what a stable!! Esther Marrow's "Ask Me To Dance" is another fine tune, written and arranged by Bobby Scott whose credits are as impressive as anyone's in the history of popular music. This is the man who wrote " A Taste Of Honey" and "He Ain't Heavy He's My Brother" , ooof! So by way of a finale I had to start with a tune that I've had lurking around for a while, but not found a way to play, as it's not the kind of thing that sits easily in most types of Cosmic Jam sequence. However Pat Williams "Joy Joy" is a beautifully bonkers piece of orchestrated funk that definitely deserved an airing, so I goaded myself into it by posting a picture of the cover on Instagram beforehand!! Following on with a bona fide rare groove classic from 9th Creation, and a favourite from Caldera, the ever impressive "Sky Islands", before we land on "Do You Want To Dance" from Jim Messina's rather wonderful Oasis album which also takes me back to early days of The Cosmic Jam, I've only just re-acquired this on vinyl, it's proper West Coast, Steely Dan at the disco business… time to go before I get carried away. Hope you enjoy the music. May I remind you about a little session well worth investigating…. https://www.facebook.com/events/609272492453291/ 1. Soul/Jazz Folk singer and guitarist Terry Callier, passed away last week (October 27, 2012) aged 67 after suffering from throat cancer. Terry released a string of enduring and influential albums between the early 60's and the late 80's and enjoyed a creative rebirth during the late 90’s in the UK when his Folk, Soulful music was revived by the acid-jazz movement, and great new albums via Talkin Loud Records and Mr Bongos. Terry's more modern collaborators included Beth Orton, Massive Attack, 4hero, Incognito, Paul Weller and Nujabes. It wasn't just the distinct voice and guitar playing that made Terry so special in his early era but his sometimes radical out-there songwriting skills were picked up by the likes of The Dells, Jerry Butler, Dee Sharp Gamble and The Rotary Connection. Credit also goes to Terry for Spotting Minnie Riperton as she worked as a receptionist at Chess Cadet Records (so the story goes). Some of my personal favorites from Terry is his work with arrangers Charles Stepney and Richard Evans at Cadet records. Enjoy the selection. Rest In Power Terry Callier. Marc Mac
