Slag, skrik, knivar, en man faller och reser sig aldrig igen. Woodstock var en dröm, Altamont var baksmällan – blodig, skakig, och omöjlig att glömma. It was intended to be "Woodstock West", a celebration of music in a free concert in California. It was intended to have a fun lineup of some of the biggest rock bands on 1969, headlined by The Rolling Stones. It ended with four people dead, hundreds injured, and is often pointed to as the death of the 1960s peace & love / counter-culture movements.

“I don't know if in Canada or in the States the sounds are different, but here, Toyota, for instance, is very abstract, high-pitched, it's a bike or like 'peeeeee,' like this, for instance. The Renault is more reassuring, more warm, it's welcoming, it's a little bit more, you know, it's less cold than other sounds.""Sure, yeah. Well, I guess maybe if it doesn't focus specifically on the sound of the engine, but even the engine sounds have been changing over the years right, yes. They're getting, like you said, they're getting softer or they're getting electric." “Yeah, absolutely” -- Andrea Cera My next guest is an Italian sound designer and composer, classically trained in piano and composition, along with extensive learning in computer music. Since 1998 he's created over 40 soundtracks for contemporary dance and theatre works. He's collaborated with the prestigious Casa Paganini – InfoMus, a research center and university in Genova, on research projects about cross-modality and human movement sonification, and a few years ago he began a collaboration with IRCAM and Renault for the design of external electric car sounds, from Renault Zoé to the new E-Tech 2022.His name is Andrea Cera and if you'd like to know more about designing sound for a purpose, he's definitely the right person to ask. We'll cover both sides of the coin, from subtle soundscapes and ambiance to aggressive music and even using noise as art. It's a fascinating discussion, so stay tuned! As always, if you have questions for my guest, you're welcome to reach out through the links in the show notes. If you have questions for me, visit audiobrandingpodcast.com where you'll find a lot of ways to get in touch. And if you're getting some value from listening, the best ways to show your support are to share this podcast with a friend and leave an honest review. Both those things really help – and I'd love to feature your review on future podcasts. You can leave one either in written or in voice format from the podcast's main page. I would so appreciate that. (0:00:01) - The Power of SoundAs the episode begins, we talk about sound's power to move its listeners, to spark powerful emotions like excitement and fear, and even, in one case that Andrea recalls, to stop a riot. "There is one moment," he says, recounting the infamous 1969 Altamont Free Concert, "where The Thirteenth Floor Elevators play, and the girl who sings, they see a riot, and she starts calming the people, and she has this, like, in, I don't know, ten seconds. She talks like with your tone, like this, and the riot stops."He also tells us about how the power of sound first inspired him as a young man when, while working in the theater, he saw for himself the effect his music and sound design had on audiences. “And it was around that age,” Andrea explains, “that I really started to say, wow, I mean, what you learn studying composition really works in a kind of subconscious way” He also explains his philosophy when it comes to sound design, and how, when it comes to audio, less is often more: “For me, design is distillation, it's taking away and just using the minimum necessary to convey a sensation.” (0:12:25) - Car Sounds and Branding EvolutionOur conversation turns to Andrea's sound design work with electric and self-driving vehicles, and the challenge of holding a driver's attention in what might...

Journalist and novelist Dawnie Walton joins co-hosts Whitney Terrell and V.V. Ganeshananthan to talk about U.S. concert culture. Why are live concerts so popular this summer and why have they so often become violent? Walton discusses how recent examples of fan violence speak to racism and sexism in American culture, as well as the role social media plays in fandom. Finally, she reads from her 2021 novel, The Final Revival of Opal & Nev, which focuses on the fictional partnership between a Black American woman, singer Opal Jewel, and a white British man, guitarist Neville Charles, and discusses her story's connection to the infamous Altamont Free Concert in 1969. Nick's been chewing on a story from Pitchfork last month about Pulitzer Prize winning journalist Ian Urbina's yet-to-be-profitable revenue sharing venture with a few hundred artists…some of which turn out to be equal parts angry and loud. It, uh, hasn't gone well. [Pitchfork]Song: The Smile - “You Will Never Work In Television Again”Greg read an article that provided some context to Nick's segment last week about venues receiving COVID-19 relief funds and remaining open; according to the Wall Street Journal, venues have reported seeing No-Show rates as high as 20% in the last year. With a large percentage of their revenues coming from food and alcohol sales, many venues are struggling to make ends meet… [WSJ]Song: Kneebody - “Lowell”Jay brings us the story behind an amazing 30 minutes of footage from the infamous 1969 Altamont Free Concert that was released this week by the Library of Congress. The film, captured by an audience member on a silent 8mm camera, provides little clarity into the death of Meredith Hunter, but does feature remarkable closeup footage of the artists present for the show.Song: CAN - “Brighton 75 Vier - Live”

We also have a subreddit!SHOW NOTES: Phil looked up people pronouncing “human” like “yu-man” and apparently it's how people in NYC, Philadelphia and some places in Ireland say it. Phil is from rural California and although he used to live in NYC, he moved there as an adult. This clip features a scientific explanation of how Paul Bunyan and Babe the Big Blue Ox created the Grand Teton mountain range by roughhousing. We discuss a number of volcanic-relevant geographical locations including Mount St. Helens, The Road to Hana, Mount Shasta, Panum Crater, Pompeii, Arenal Volcano and Long Valley Caldera. Dr. Pimple Popper is a dermatologist who makes videos of pimples being popped. Look, the world isn't always that great, this sort of stuff is out there. We briefly discuss a volcano that erupted in the 19th Century, affecting global weather patterns and creating a year without a summer. The eruption in question was that of Mount Tambora in 1815 (the Year Without a Summer was the following year). It's also hypothesized that a similar thing happened in the 6th Century. Joe Vs. the Volcano is a 1990 film by John Patrick Shanley (Moonstruck) starring Tom Hanks & Meg Ryan (in multiple roles). It's a fun movie that lost a lot of money. Phil talks about underwater animals that survive from “geothermal” heat, but the real term is "hydrothermal vent". These animals have a whole little ecosystem that doesn't need sunlight. They live in one of the few truly alien environments on Earth. Jake mentions the use of McLean's song in Black Widow, but we can't remember the name of the character Yelena Belova. “The Day the Music Died” is a reference to Feb. 3, 1959, when Buddy Holly, Richie Valens & Big Bopper died in a plane crash.  Jake mentions the 1969 Altamont Free Concert, which is considered one of the end-markers of the 1960s. He incorrectly refers to the killing of a woman at the concert, when in fact it was an eighteen-year-old man (named Meredith) who was stabbed to death. Three other people also died at the concert. Songs we compare “American Pie” to include “Black Betty” by Ram Jam, “Turn! Turn! Turn!” by The Byrds, “Cats In the Cradle” by Harry Chapin, “You're So Vain” by Carly Simon, “The First Cut is the Deepest” by Rod Stewart, “Night Moves” by Bob Seager, “Mrs. Robinson” by Simon & Garfunkel, “The Saga Begins” by “Weird Al” Yankovic, “Cherry Pie” by Warrant, “Sweet Potato Pie” by Domino, “Do You Know the Way to San Jose” by Dionne Warwick and “Roly Poly” by Bob Wills and his Texas Playboys. We compare it to a few Billy Joel songs (“We Didn't Start the Fire”, “Piano Man” and “Only the Good Die Young”). There's been an ongoing reassessment of Billy Joel (since about 2009 when this LA times blog defended him). Here's a Vice defense, and here's Jon Gabrus' "High and Mighty" Billy Joel episode. We also discuss Taylor Swift's “All Too Well” and the “American Pie” cover by Madonna. Don McLean's twenty-seven year-old girlfriend is Paris Dylan. She and former NBA player Chris "Birdman" Andersen were both victims of a catfishing scheme a few years ago that's too weird to even explain but here's an honest attempt. Here's the Cocaine & Rhinestones episode on the Louvin Brothers (which talks about blood harmonies). We never say the name of their band, but when we talk about Matt Hock & Dave Walsh we're of course talking about Space Cadet. Wary of cops, they hired The Hells Angels to do security, and last-minute changes to the venue resulted in unsafe stages, bad acid trips & massive overcrowding. 4 people died, including Meredith Hunter, a young black man, who was stabbed to death by the Hells' Angels. We analyze it through the lens of comedy, to try and see how and why these people/event went down the wrong road. So come join me, Steve Furey and my funny friends to learn about some of the people who stay in the shadows. This Weeks guest is Matt Lockwood (IG @mattdaddylockwood and podcast The Big Humble), matt is one of the funniest comics i know and one of my best friends. you can c him touring with a bunch of comedians, or weekly at The comedy Store. The first motorcycles were invented in the late 19th Century[1]and it took less than 50 years before motorcycle gangs began to emerge around the world. Growing from the fertile soil of counterculture clubs that challenged societal norms, and largely populated by World War 2 veterans, motorcycle gangs have a blood-soaked and drug-fueled history in the U.S. “Sons of Anarchy” has defined motorcycle gangs for most listeners; however, for an older generation, it was the work of Hunter S. Thompson (his book “Hell's Angels: The Strange and Terrible Saga of the Outlaw Motorcycle Gangs” (1966)) or the tragedy at the Altamont Free Concert in 1969[2]. As is the case with any criminal group, it's important to recognize that any “facts” about motorcycle gangs are highly contentious. These organizations heavily rely on secrets, and the creation and maintaining of (sometimes grandiose) myths is vital for recruitment. Schneider managed the early US tours of The Rolling Stones while simultaneously dealing with the financial affairs of some of the biggest names in rock n' roll history including the Stones, The Beatles, Neil Sedaka, Sam Cooke, Nancy Wilson, Bobby Vinton, Herman's Hermits and the Shirelles.Acting on behalf of The Rolling Stones, Schneider hired the Maysles Brothers to film The Rolling Stones' Madison Square Garden Concert for promotional purposes. This led to filming the free outdoor concert The Rolling Stones gave at the Altamont Raceway Park in Northern California in early December 1969 which became the film Gimme Shelter for which Schneider was credited as Executive Producer. This acclaimed concert documentary horrified participants and viewers alike. Capturing the scene of a man (Meredith Hunter) brutally stabbed to death by the Hells Angels, it remains one of the most successful concert films ever made. Schneider also appears in several key scenes in the movie, negotiating the choice of location for the concert, attempting to get adequate security for the show, and notably, escaping by helicopter with The Rolling Stones as the scene spun out of control.Ronnie wrote about his rock n' roll  days in his autobiography "Out of Our Heads with Proof of Truth: The Rolling Stones, The Beatles and Me". Learn more about Lyte Hosted on Acast. In 1969, he acted as master of ceremonies at The Rolling Stones concert in Hyde Park London.   Following the Hyde Park show, Cutler was asked to be the personal road manager to The Rolling Stones during their 1969 Tour of America, which culminated in the infamous Altamont Free Concert where Afro-American arts student[citation needed]Meredith Curly Hunter, Jr. was killed in front of the stage. Cutler is commonly credited with first uttering The Rolling Stones' famous intro line, “Ladies and Gentlemen, the Greatest Rock and Roll Band in the World…The Rolling Stones!”   Cutler can be seen in many scenes in the documentary film Gimme Shelter which covers the events of the 1969 American tour, and can be heard on The Rolling Stones live album Get Yer Ya-Ya's Out! introducing the band. He can also be seen in the film Festival Express and Stones in the Park.   Throughout his rock and roll career, Cutler was around and was agent for some of the largest rock and roll shows in history outside of Woodstock including The Rolling Stones in Hyde Park, the Grateful Dead's Europe '72 tour and the Dead's participation in the Festival Express train tour across Canada.

Ethan talks with Marc about going from the U.S. to England in the 1960s to become a writer, only to find himself working with Mick Jagger and taking rock and roll photographs that stand the test of time. On the eve of the 50th anniversary of the ill-fated Altamont Free Concert, Ethan describes what it was like to document the event and be on the helicopter that got the Stones out of there when it all went down. This episode is sponsored by Zoro.com and SimpliSafe.
