This is a story of how with God all things are possible! Meet Andy Raines. Andy was a children's pastor for 25 years. Fifteen years ago, he felt God whispering to him that he was meant to paint, despite having never picked up a paintbrush or taken an art class before. Join me as we hear Andy's story of overcoming drug addiction and how God transformed his life. Andy also works as an electrician at Ranken Tech. At the end of this podcast, Andy picks up the paint brush and paints a picture of Jesus to the music of "My Desire". This is one of the most inspiring podcasts I've ever produced. It's a testament to how, with God, all things are possible!
An episode for the old school romance readers in the audience, we're talking about kidnapping this week! A trope that either absolutely works for readers (aka us) or absolutely doesn't, we talk about why that is, how the original romances of the 80s and 90s installed these buttons and how we still see the bones of old school kidnapping in delicious romances of today. That, and Jen reminds Sarah of books wrote one time. If you want more romance content, maybe you want to join our Patreon, where you get another episode from us each month, and access to the incredible readers and listeners and brilliant people on the Fated Mates discord! The cornerstone of the genre. The one thing that, when thrown into question, is guaranteed to enrage every corner of Romancelandia. We're talking about Happily Ever After (HEA). Its promise, its importance, its relevance to us as readers, writers and people in the world. For this morning service at Brainerd Baptist Church in Chattanooga, Tennessee the family of Dr. McIntyre was welcomed as Brother McIntyre delivered the message. He preached that we should all be urgently praying and studying the Word as we try to look at our corner of the world the way God does and try to gain His perspective as we make decisions in our lives that include God. Preceding the message Mrs. Tony Carroll sang "It's My Desire." The congregational singing included the following great hymns of the faith, "Savior Like a Shepherd Lead Us," He Leadeth Me," and "Have Thine Own Way Lord." The service concluded with the singing of "One in the Bond of Love."

We read: The Governess Affair by Courtney Milan Prisoner of My Desire by Johanna Lindsey
This week on the Worn & Wound podcast, just like Scrooge McDuck, we're diving headfirst into gold. Zach Weiss recently penned an editorial on his growing interest in gold, and in this episode Blake Buettner and Zach Kazan join him to talk about how gold watches fit into our lives, or could, in theory, someday down the line. We wonder aloud why it is that gold watches gain in our esteem over time, and which gold watches we'd choose for ourselves if money were no object, or if commodities markets simply crashed overnight. And of course we take questions and comments from listeners on your favorite gold watches as well. Before all of that, we discuss some of the week's big new releases, including new chronographs from Zenith and Omega. To stay on top of all new episodes, you can subscribe to The Worn & Wound Podcast — now available on all major platforms including iTunes, Google Play, Stitcher, Soundcloud, Spotify, and more. Continuing our conversation about Bright Bananas on the Romance Tree — this week we're reading an extreme oldie, Anne Stuart's Tangled Lies, famous for being a story about a heroine falling for her brother…except he's not really her brother! It's a RIDE. We talk about just how odd romance could be back in the day, about how this book might be an ancestor to dark romance, and about how alpha alpha heroes could really get. And then we talk about modern contemporary romance and how things are changing in traditional publishing. Our next read along in some number of weeks (three? four?) is Kylie Scott's Lead, one of our longtime favorites. Get it at Amazon, Apple Books, B&N, Kobo, or Bookshop.org! Thank you, as always, for listening! Please follow us on your favorite podcasting app, and if you are up for leaving a rating or review there, we would be very grateful! Show NotesBombshell comes out on Aug 24th. You should preorder it from WORD in Brooklyn, which will for sure come with some cool swag, including a special edition Fated Mates sticker. Best Friend Kelly did a Twitter poll asking people about their experiences ordering books + swag from Indie bookstores. Speaking of which, the art by Liz Parkes for The Soulmate Equation is the cutest! You might need this page as you are reading Tangled Lies.Speaking of books from your grandma's attic, look at what HEAapologist found this week! If you want this feeling without having relatives cool enough to leave them lying around, just order a big lot of random romances from eBay. For individual titles, Jen thinks Thrift Books is better than Amazon because you don't pay shipping for each individual title.Rob Imes has a page on his blog where he keeps track of all the category lines through 1989. In the case of Tangled Lies, it was first published as Harlequin Intrigue #5, then it was rebranded in the Men Made in America series, and finally part of the Famous Firsts Collection that celebrated Harlequin's 60th anniversary. Fiction DB is the place to do if you're looking for an author's backlist. Here is Anne Stuart's page, the one where the soldier and the nun have a baby together. Also, Catspaw.Check out Adriana's Instagram Live Series about telenovelas. Sarah was on to talk about Falcon Crest, because she imprinted on Lorenzo Llamas in his swim suit. His character's name was Lance Cumson. Sure.Speaking of Adriana, now is the time to preorder One Week to Claim it All. Jen and her brother Mike will be on to talk about Santa Barbara. In case you don't remember the movie Sneakers a very similar situation happens when Robert Redford is out for pizza in the 60s. And it looks like Jen & Sarah aren't the only ones who love this movie. Why we were all afraid of piranhas and quicksand in the 80s. I don't know why.The Pondering Padre (from the original cover) looks like Friar Lawrence, but not like Friar Tuck. Please note: not that kind of Priest. In the introduction, Anne Stuart mentioned being inspired by an old movie called Miss Tatlock's Millions (1948) but when it comes to "ope, maybe we're related" in pop culture, it seems hard not to talk about the influence of Flowers in the Attic and its famous incestual relationship. More recently, it was the Lannister twins in Game of Thrones or the folks in this Slate column. In romance, it was more common that these attractions were the mark of villainous men lusting after their sisters, such as Prisoner of My Desire by Johanna Lindsey, and others by Bertrice Small and Stella Cameron. A more updated story is Mister Moneybags by Vi Keeland and Penelope Ward.In film, along with Miss Tatlock's Millions, Sarah metioned Crimson Peak (2015), and Jen is kicking herself for not bringing up the terrific movie movie Lone Star (1996).Jen wrote about paratext on Twitter, which of course turned into a cover conversation. We have a lot of fun interviews with authors coming up in June, and our next read along (in a couple of weeks) will be Lead by Kylie Scott. Vulture TV Critic Angelica Jade Bastién wrote a thread asking why she's bored, and wondering what happend to interesting failures. Donald Glover returned to Twitter to blame cancel culture for boring art, but then he canceled his own tweets later. A few think pieces about why sexual content is being deplatformed on the: who is doing it, and who it impacts. I bet you're shocked to learn its about capitalism and right-wing politics. Why Sarah's Facebook group OSRBC keeps getting dragged into the net.We have a lot of really fun guests coming up in the next few weeks: Tia Williams, Zoraida Cordova, and Nana Malone. Our next read along (at some point in June) will be Lead by Kylie Scott.
We're toppling TBRs this week with widow romances! We're talking widows of all shapes and sizes…from virgin widows who murder their husbands in old school historicals to modern-day widows who are looking for love because they know how good it can be. If widow romances are your thing, we're about to make you very happy!Next week, we're back with an interstitial, and in two weeks, we're reading Sarah's favorite Sherry Thomas book —Ravishing the Heiress. Find it at Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Apple Books, or Kobo. We're also going to announce our next read along now, because it's out of print (but available in audio!), so you will have to do a bit of a used bookstore hunt to get it! Please follow us on your favorite podcasting app, and if you are up for leaving a rating or review there, we would be very grateful!Show NotesLast week, we talked about Big Pharma, and if you want more of that, read Empire of Pain by Patrick Radden Keefe. It's about the Sackler family and how they made billions on Oxycontin which was a huge factor in the creation of the opioid epidemic.Daisy Jones and the Six is a great novel, and the full-cast audiobook is supposed to be amazing. The Reese Witherspoon book club is the definition of the full glow-up.Sarah made some Maple Oatmeal Muffins, and maybe you want the recipe. Why food bloggers include some pre-recipe chatter. The question of freshman year dorm room decoration is of new significance to Jen since Lil Romance will be heading off to college in the fall. Might we recommend a Pulp Fiction movie poster or some Absolut Vodka ads?If we're talking skyscrapers, meaning buildings over 150M (about 500 feet) tall, when this was recorded in April of 2021, Cleveland has 4, Denver has 7, Chicago has 127, and New York has 284. According to wikipedia, only nine cities in the world have over 100 buildings 150M tall. The other seven are Hong Kong (355), Shenzhen (289), Dubai (201), Shanghai (163), Tokyo (158), Chongqing (127), and Guangzhou (118).Check out the Sassy Podcast and the Babysitter's Club. No, not that kind of babysitter. We love the movie Widows. The merry widow is an opera and a kind of sexy lingerie. We did an episode on Prisoner of My Desire with Joanna Shupe way back in season one. Primogeniture laws are all about who inherits titles and money and estates, and wasn't changed in England until 2013. Apparently there are lots of misconceptions about Arabian horses. More about Victorian era mourning requirements.Historically you couldn't marry your brother's widowAll about gorillas and where the live, and actually it turns out a gorilla really could kill you in a fight. Sarah was on Learning the Tropes talking about The Earl Takes All, in case you need more of that.Spoiler alert about The Power Broker in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. We have two read-along books in May. On the 12th, we'll be reading Ravishing the Heiress by Sherry Thomas. On the 26th, we'll be reading Tangled Lies by Anne Stuart. 7.19.20 Message Discussion Guide – “Win, Lose, or Peace” Read James 3:13-18 with your group. · James defines worldly wisdom using these words/phrases: bitter envy and selfish ambition. We have all sinned at one time or another by harboring one of these. How have you guarded against bitter envy and/or selfish ambition? · James then describes Godly wisdom using these words: pure, peace-loving, considerate, submissive, merciful, fruitful, impartial, and sincere. Which of these characteristics do you feel comes most natural to you? Which one have you been asking (or need to ask) God to grow in you? · Mike said a roadblock to peace is when noise drowns our wisdom. He said when that happens, it’s time to turn off the noise and turn up the wisdom of God. How do you accomplish making this happen? · Another roadblock to peace that Mike mentioned is when passion triumphs over principle. Most arguments aren’t over right or wrong, but rather MY DESIRE being superior to YOUR DESIRE. When was a time when your passion trumped principle? How do you maintain principle over passion when it comes to your day to day conversations? Read James 4:1-10 with your group. · Now that we’ve read this passage, let’s circle back to Mike’s blueprint for “getting back on track.” He lists five ways, based on what James writes in this passage: 1. Get out of the driver’s seat – “submit yourselves to God” (verse 7) 2. Silence the lies – “resist the devil” (verse 7) 3. Nurture your relationship with God – “draw near to God” (verse 8) 4. Remove the dirt – “cleanse your hands” (verse 8) 5. Realign your heart – “purify your hearts” (verse 8) · When you consider all five points, what are you doing daily to either get back on track or stay on track? · What do you think it means to truly submit to God? · In what way will you think and live differently as a result of today’s message from James?
OUR IDENTITY IN CHRIST BLOG SERIES MESSAGE 1 – WHO ARE YOU? It Is Not About Me It Is About Him and What He Has Done For me (He gave me a new life and identity) 7/12/2020 8:28:07 AM We live in a world today that is filled with constant attacks on our identity in a variety of ways. Covid -19 Mob Protestors -Hate Crimes-Abortions- The list goes on. I will be doing a 6-part blog on this Our Identity In Christ I have a service I bought into a few years ago that I hope that I would never have to use which is called “Lexington Law and All Clear ID”. Now, this isn't an advertisement for them, however I had to use them for I was a victim of identity theft 3 times, decides they did provide some backup to help get me out of that mess. I guess one doesn't really know if it works until you need them and I had too, and it did provide some sense of security. In addition, the Word of God lets us know there is one part of Satan's work that he does his best at and that is to be “the accuser of the brethren” yet we can see that one day he will be dealt with for all of eternity: Revelation 12:10 (NKJV) 10 Then I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, "Now salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of His Christ have come, for the accuser of our brethren, who accused them before our God day and night, has been cast down. I'm glad for that day that will come soon, but for now, we know that the enemy's desire is to trip you up in your mind by making you feel like you are “less than” when God has declared that you are “more than”! Most of the accusations coming from the enemy try to convince us that we aren't who God says we are, and in fact, never will be! I've been going back and forth as to if I should share a series of blogs messages on “Our Identity in Christ” and as I watched the movie “Overcomer” with my wife awhile back , it served as a confirmation that indeed the time is now to share this Series with you and will most likely consist of about 6 messages as follows: Message 1 – Who Are You? Message 2 – More Than a “Work” Message 3 – More Than a Servant Message 4 – More Than Chosen Message 5 – More Than Crucified Message 6 – More Than a Conqueror Throughout this Series, we are going to be sharing many scriptures that bring out the truth that we are IN CHRIST and CHRIST IS IN US! For now, I want to read 2 Scriptures that share this powerful truth: 2 Corinthians 5:17 (NKJV) 17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new. Colossians 1:27 (NKJV) – 27 To them God willed to make known what are the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles: which is Christ in you, the hope of glory. WE MUST KNOW WHO WE ARE If you have seen the movie “Overcomer” then you have been blessed to watch a movie that is powerful and inspirational. If you have not seen it, then I encourage you to go watch it, or at least get the DVD or check to see if it is on Vudu. And by the way, bring your tissues as it will grab you by the emotions and not let go too quickly. (yes, I got teary eyed) There is a scene within the movie that hit home when I watched it and I have no doubt, it did with you as well and I wanted to play it for you now. (check the link below) Keep in mind that the man lying in the hospital bed is blind, and since many of you haven't seen the movie, I don't want to give his story away. Yet he asks a question that each one of us need to consider in our own lives. PLAY MOVIE CLIP – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hgqaGu9KlDw&list=PL1xkCp_xGsnrMQCOn-RNytRDBqsvP9-yR&index=7&t=0s If I were to walk around the sanctuary today asking each one of you this question “Who Are You”, then I imagine I would receive quite a variety of answers. We are much better at asking this question of people “So what do you do”? I get it that it's a great way to open a conversation with people but “what people do” doesn't really define who they are! I was asked the other day by someone in the church if they knew what someone else in the church who has attended here for years does for work, and while I was a bit embarrassed I didn't know, at least I was happy that I know them for more than “what they do”. Of course, I know what many of you do for work, but I would encourage you to never let that be what determines “who you are”. Never allow that to be the measure of other people as well! The statement that was made in this clip is powerful: “Your identity will be tied to whatever you give your heart to” We are going to get to this point later in the message, but when we know “who” we are, then we will find it far easier to find out “why” we are. If we begin to realize that the “who” we have become is out of line with the Word of God, then there is nothing so important as getting back in that place we need to be. I'm going to take a moment to be a bit transparent with you and perhaps you can relate a bit to what I'm about to say. There are times in my life I talk to myself- (a lot). I'm sorry, but that's just the case. No, I haven't really started to answer and I'm hoping that doesn't happen thanks be to God. I'm not the healthiest person I have several medical conditions to include PTSD, at times I feel incredibly sad that I'm not able to do the things I want to do with my family, or afraid something might trigger my PTSD. Here's my “confession” during these moments – I will say under my breath “What a dummy, what a loser you served in the military and cannot even walk a half a mile” – Almost immediately a conviction comes into my spirit that those are words I shouldn't be saying because eventually, I might just believe it! Proverbs 23:7 King James Version (KJV)7 For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he: Eat and drink, saith he to thee; but his heart is not with thee. There's nobody here today that enjoys criticism, but I've found that the one who is harder on me than anyone else, is myself! To be honest, I think we get in the way of God getting through to us about who we are in Him more than anyone else! Together we are going to learn some powerful things throughout the Series of WHO we are in Christ and realize that there is a purpose for the Believer in knowing this. Please keep me in prayer as I work on this blog It changes our outlook on the past, present and future! 1 John 3:2 (NKJV) 2 Beloved, now we are children of God; and it has not yet been revealed what we shall be, but we know that when He is revealed, we shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is. Not only do we need to Know Who We Are: WE MUST REMEMBER WHO WE WERE Now, before you begin to think this is a bad thing and that I'm encouraging you to stay anchored to your past, please know that it's a good thing to remember who we were so that we aren't tempted to repeat that in our lives. Ephesians 2:11-12 (NKJV) 11 Therefore remember that you, once Gentiles in the flesh--who are called Uncircumcision by what is called the Circumcision made in the flesh by hands. 12 that at that time you were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope and without God in the world. While this scripture might seem that it doesn't relate to us today as we often don't even think about the fact that we are Gentiles who have been invited into this great covenant of promise given to the Jewish people, but in fact, this is the case! Look and Listen to what Paul and Barnabas told the believers in the early church:' Acts 13:46 (NKJV) 46 Then Paul and Barnabas grew bold and said, "It was necessary that the word of God should be spoken to you first; but since you reject it, and judge yourselves unworthy of everlasting life, behold, we turn to the Gentiles. When they said “spoken to you first” meant that the Gospel or Good News of Jesus Christ was shared with the Jewish people first, but since they (for the most part) rejected it, then the Gospel was being opened up to the Gentiles which includes most, if not all of us here today! But he told them to remember something as we can see in verse 12 and that is that they “had no hope” and were “without God in the world”! Paul didn't just tell them to forget about the fact that they used to be hopeless, but he told them to remember it as we read in Eph. 2:11 – “Therefore Remember” Often, we can't really appreciate the blessings we have now without realizing what we didn't have before knowing Christ! There's a song Brenda has sung called “It's My Desire” to live for Jesus and the lyrics go like this: “If you could see where Jesus brought me from and where I am today, then you would know the reason why I love Him so” I've never quite understood why people turn their backs on God only to go back to a life of hopelessness – Perhaps they were told the lie that the Christian life is one of total bliss without problems, instead of the fact that we do indeed have problems, but at least now we have a wonderful Savior to walk the journey with us! Paul makes sure that this reality is not just skipped over or ignored so they can get to the reality of - Ephesians 2:13 (NKJV) 13 But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ. He recognizes that one of the best ways to appreciate the nearness of Christ is that we take some time to remember how far away we were from Christ! This is why I believe in the tremendous value of having groups like Teen Challenge in to share not only where they are now, but also how far they've come. They often share testimonies not to glorify the past, but to appreciate their present and future even more! Also, to give warning to those who might think a life of sin is the way to go. In a couple of month we will go through another Anniversary of the terrible attack on America we often refer to as 9-11 – As the years go by and we get farther away from the attack, there is a tendency to forget about that day so we often hear these words “Remember 9-11”. Why would we be encouraged to remember something that was such a tragic event? Not just to appreciate the freedom we have now, but to also make sure we don't repeat mistakes that led up to 9-11 in the first place! I believe it's especially important that we remember where we were without Christ! I realize that may be more difficult for some such as those of us who grew up in the Church, but I pray the Holy Spirit opens our eyes to the “hopelessness” there was and continues to be without Christ! We are told in Ephesians 2:12 to “remember” but we are told by the same writer, Paul the Apostle in Philippians 3:13 to “forget” - Philippians 3:13 (NKJV) 13 Brethren, I do not count myself to have apprehended; but one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead, The context of this scripture in Philippians 3 is that he had gained tremendous knowledge of Christ in the past and had victory after victory. Yet, the idea is that he would not settle on those accomplishments but that he would press on for more of what God had available for him. In other words, while he was satisfied with what Christ had done for him, he knew there was more to have, and he was willing to leave it all behind to reach forward to the great things ahead! Remember the past, but don't be overcome by the past! Your past should not determine your future! Even your past victories are nothing in comparison to your future victories! I believe that if we KNOW WHO WE ARE, and REMEMBER WHO WE WERE, it will also help us as: WE MUST KNOW WHY WE ARE John 15:16 (NKJV) 16 You did not choose Me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit, and that your fruit should remain, that whatever you ask the Father in My name He may give you. Jesus chose these disciples and appointed them to spread the gospel and bear fruit for God's kingdom. The Lord chooses each believer to be a branch in the Vine—a branch that bears fruit that will last. The remaining, or lasting, fruit means either new believers whose faith perseveres, or the enduring quality of the fruit of the Spirit—especially brotherly love. I may not know much about growing and harvesting apples, but this I do know. If I were to plant an apple tree and it grew to the point that it could soon produce apples, and I decided that I wanted to cut one of the branches off, put it in a planter in my house so I could watch the apples grow, it just wouldn't happen! Why? Because at the point it was separated from the tree, it lost its purpose. It was no longer a branch that would bear fruit and it wouldn't matter how much you watered it or talked to it. The purpose was for it to bear fruit and the ONLY way it could happen was by staying attached to the tree where it would be nourished and fed. You and I are called to produce fruit, and fruit that remains. In other words, as Disciples of Christ, we are called to produce more Disciples of Christ. In addition, we are to get involved in Kingdom work, and do our best to involve others in Kingdom work. We can be involved in a lot of things and those things may be good things, but are they going to produce fruit for the Kingdom of God? John 15:4-5 (NKJV) 4 Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in Me. 5 I am the vine; you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing. This relationship with Christ goes both ways. When we abide in Him, and He abides in us, then the natural (or supernatural result) is that we will bear much fruit! While we all have been called to bear fruit, God uses each one of us in a different way to accomplish the task. We don't all bear fruit the same way, but the important thing is that we are staying connected to the vine! If you read the entire passage of John 15:1-7 it mentions the word “abide” a total of 8 times. The word “abide” comes from the Greek Word “meno” which means “to stay connected to, immerse yourself in, draw upon, rely upon, depend upon” – In other words, just like the Son could do nothing apart from the Father of eternal value, so you and I cannot function to our full capacity without staying connected to the Vine (Jesus). Again, your specific “why” is most likely different than anyone else around you, but your general “why” is that you bear fruit! I pray that you will experience fulfillment and joy like never before as you know and understand your “why”. As you function in God's perfect plan and will for YOUR life and realize with Him “in you” and “you in Him” tremendous things will be accomplished for the Kingdom! How do we abide in Christ? Prayer or communicating with Christ Reading the Word – Allowing Him to communicate with us (Don't always be looking for “a word”, when you can go to “the Word” Attend Church Faithfully The Bible says in: John 15:7 If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, you will ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you. It is interesting that the Lord moves away from “Abide in me, and I in you” that we see earlier in John 15, and he says now, “if my words abide in you” – It's important to know that when we truly abide in Christ and allow His words to abide in us that we are going to be so full of the presence of God that the farthest thing from our minds will be asking for “things” that we believe will finally make us happy. When we have the mind of Christ, we recognize that like Jesus, souls coming to Him and doing the Will of the Father will be bread and water for our hungry and thirsty souls. John 4:34 (NKJV) 34 Jesus said to them, "My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me, and to finish His work. While I believe we serve a God who wants to meet our needs, and He does when we obey Him, He knows that when His words abide in us, we want to do His will more than our own! Questions: - Do you need to know Christ today as Savior? - Do you struggle at times against the accusations of the enemy? - Do you need to take hold of God's promises about your future?
This week it's one of our very faves, Joanna Shupe is back! Joanna has a new book out June 30th -- The Devil of Downtown -- which is basically perfection, so we're talking about why Gilded Age romance is the best, and why everyone should be reading unusual historicals (historicals set outside the Regency in England). Get ready, your TBR will groan after this one!Oh, and did you know Sarah also has a book out June 30th? Order Daring & the Duke from Amazon, Kobo, Barnes & Noble, Apple Books, Books-a-Million or from your local indie, or order it signed from her local indie, WORD Bookstore, and get a special edition Fated Mates sticker with your purchase! As summer approaches, if you are up for leaving a rating or review for the podcast on your podcasting app, we would be very grateful!Oh, and did you know Sarah also has a book out June 30th? The first was to discuss the enemies to lovers trope in Prisoner of My Desire and Kiss of a Demon King.Speaking of IAD: ever seen the IAD spreadsheet of Wonder, created be Sarah Hawley from the Wicked Wallflowers Podcast? Oh, and if you haven't read it, why not do it this summer? There's a group read going on right now on a subgroup of Sarah's Facebook Book Club! All about Homage, allusion, and allegory in case it's been a while since you were in an English class.Modern Library! Where are our romances?Sarah has a bunch of online events this summer. Many of the old American historicals support an ahistorical white settler, Manifest Destiny, story of Westward Expansion. Savage Thunder was a particularly problematic one, and Jen only read it for the "sex on a horse" scene. Maybe watch some Deadwood instead?Which came first? Eurocentrism or the Anglophiles?Gone With the Wind is just Lost Cause propaganda. Don't at us. Speaking of wars: The Napoleonic Wars took place during the Regency, but no one ever really talks about them in Regency romances.Romance's Regency blueprint was created by Jane Austen and Georgette Heyer.Nipple piercing has been around for a long time. Look for it in Joanna's next book.Joanna's fascination with The Gilded Age started with Edith Wharton. The time period is the setting for the Uptown Girls series, but the Gilded Age also has lots of uncomfortable parallels to today. If you're looking for more information about The Gilded Age, you should know that Jack Mulligan was based on real life mobster Paul Kelly. Joanna also recommends the following books: Low Life, The Gangs of New York, and Incredible New York. If you want to hear Joanna talk about The Gilded Age, join her Facebook Group on July 9th, 2020 for a virtual tour!If you haven't ever been to Ellis Island, it's excellent. It's a dynamic museum with tons of interesting facts about European immigration to New York. Speaking of history, if you're interested in learning about The Great Migration, the setting of A Champion's Heart, you should read The Warmth of Other Suns.Food is everyone's love language until the jello molds and casseroles start to arrive. You actually can read lots of books about the 60s.What do you mean you haven't seen The Hudsucker Proxy?
Commemorative Sex Series: Episode 3 of 4. When and where public baths have been popular, they’ve meant different things to different cultures. They might be sites for socializing, religious purification, spiritual/bodily cleanliness, relaxation/pampering, public health/hygiene, homosocialiality, and, of course, sex, or some combination of those things. At the start of the twentieth century, single-gender communal bathhouses were central to emerging gay communities all over North America and Europe. At the end of the century, those sites of community formation were associated with the rapid and devastating spread of HIV/AIDS. In 1984, the city of San Francisco ordered the closure of bathhouses, insisting that often anonymous and unsafe sex was at the heart of the bathhouse. But the closure of the gay bathhouses in AIDS-era America echoes the closure and backlash against queer bathhouse spaces in places like early twentieth-century Russia and Mexico. The bathhouse was a contested space because of its same-sex sexual activity, with or without the threat of the looming pandemic. We are feeling really proud of ourselves this week because Nobody’s Baby But Mine was the perfect isolation read for us both. The reread confirmed to both of us that this is, beat-for-beat, one of the best romcoms of all time. We’re talking problematic plots, the 90s, what we expect from jerk heroes and how Susan Elizabeth Phillips is better at flawed characters than anyone else in the game.We love having you with us! — subscribe on your favorite podcasting platform and like/review the podcast, please! In two weeks, we’re reading Victoria Dahl’s Taking the Heat. We know it’s tough to get it in print, but find it in e at your local library or at: Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Apple Books, Kobo, or in print, mailed from your local indie (which is probably still shipping!)Show NotesAmericans are stress buying chickens. Yes, eggs are more expensive, but this is not a good idea.Speaking of chicks, now that Jen knows what happens to the chicks in the hatchery at the Museum of Science and Industry, she's back on Team Train Room. One day, we'll be able to visit the Butterfuly exhibit at the Museum of Natural History again.Nick Heath and Conor McGahey have figured out a way to keep those announcing skills sharp.Jen's interviewing YA authors on TikTok.When it comes to the SEP-Multiverse, we like the whackadoodle one at the circus (Kiss an Angel), the one with Bobby Tom (Heaven Texas), the one with the lazy golfer (Lady Be Good), and the one with Sugar Beth (Ain't She Sweet). What happened to the Lamont House romance collection?Charlotte Stein has a suggestion for authors of contemporary romance.Last year, Sarah wrote about technology in romance for the Washington Post.We talked about Prisoner of My Desire with Joanna Shupe, which is another book about a heroine who has done something very wrong.Maybe you're looking for actual secret baby books. The one with bad sex is Call Me Irresistible. After 9/11, Saturday Night Live and The Onion had to figure out how to be funny again. Our next book is Taking the Heat (aka Cunnilingus Gabe) by Victoria Dahl.
Vale a pena conferir.
What happens when a political analysis that comes out of the politics of alliance ends up departing from alliance: in other words, when people think that making something “gay” is enough. The kinds of people that get forgotten and spoken over when a certain kind of essentialist gay politics are deployed. And even though this crackpot plan never came to pass, today's show, about the failed attempt to establish a gay nation in rural California, reveals some of the flaws at the heart of ‘70s radical gay politics. ----more---- SOURCES: Bérubé, Allan. Throughout his youth, Tomy DeClerque witnessed at first hand the development of Slovenia's electronic dance scene. As techno artists such as Umek and Valentino Kanzyani found global recognition and the country's club scene thrived, it presented the perfect opportunity for a young DeClerque to ride the wave. His first foray into the world of production came alongside his long- time friend Zox. Together they had early successes with "My Desire" and "Music Makes Me Happy". The latter being licensed to a number of compilations, was also selected by Pete Tong as the Essential New Tune on his BBC radio show. DeClerque was to take a break from the hectic DJ and producer lifestyle. On his return, it was time to head out solo. His early work for Circle Music, Sprout and Jesus Loved You, brought him much attention and, over the past two years, he has rapidly built a strong following with his work for labels including Intec Digital, BluFin, 1605, Terminal M, Toolroom, Cr2 and more... As a young player, Tomy DeClerque has accomplished a lot. But he is determined to accomplish even more. "You'll hear a lot about me in the future" he promises. Today's host(s): Scot Landry and Fr. Matt Williams Today's guest(s): Martin Doman, Assistant Director of Campus Ministry at Ave Maria University Today's topics: Martin Doman, Catholic praise and worship music leader Summary of today's show: On our 150th show, Martin Doman talks with Scot and Fr. Matt about his ministry as a Eucharistic praise and worship leader, his experience of writing and performing Catholic music, including “St. Patrick's Breastplate”, the theme song for The Good Catholic Life; and his advice as a campus minister for parents looking at Catholic colleges for their children. 1st segment: Scot said we celebrated our 150th show since we started on Ash Wednesday. Scot said he's learned so much about his faith and its tough to believe it's been that many. We've profiled more than 75 priests and had about 200 guests. Scot said he's not sick of his own voice yet. Just today Scot received a card from a listener who sent his condolences after Scot mentioned his uncle who had passed away. Fr. Matt said last Thursday he spoke to the first-year men discerning the diaconate. He spoke on living out your baptismal call. His cousin Brian was married on Saturday and it was a joy to be able to celebrate the sacrament with them. Scot said our guest today has had perfect attendance on the show. Martin Doman wrote the music we use as the theme for our show. It's called St. Patrick's Breastplate. Fr. Matt said he's known Martin when he was worship leader for the Steubenville East youth conference. 2nd segment: Scot asked Martin what it was like to move from his native Pennsylvania to FLorida at Ave Maria. He said it was a big change for someone so used to winter. He said the university is surrounded by a brand-new town that is inhabited mostly by Catholics and it's a great environment for his kids to grow up in. On their block alone, there are 40 or 50 kids their ages. Martin has been involved in leading Eucharistic worship for at least a decade. Scot asked him how he got started in this life. Martin said in high school he was exposed to the charismatic renewal and heard someone lead prayer in music. In his college years at Franciscan University of Steubenville, he decided that playing music at Mass was the path was God calling him to. Fr. Matt said he encountered Martin at Steubenville East in Attleboro. Martin was involved there for nine years starting in 1998. He got involved in conferences when he was in school in Steubenville when the music leader Jim Cowan asked him to be part of his band. He did well and so they asked him to lead the music himself at the Boston-area youth conference. Scot asked him to explain Eucharistic praise and worship and place it in context. He said praise and worship means just praying with music and that has it roots in Hebrew worship. So it's praying with music, participating in song. St. Augustine mentions praise music very clearly in his writings. Eucharistic praise and worship means to worship the Lord with music in His presence during Adoration or during Mass. Scot said he used to think that Adoration just had the opening and closing hymns with silence in between, until he heard Martin play during Adoration at the Men's and Women's Conferences where he would sometimes pick quietly during prayer. Martin said the rite for adoration allows for music during adoration. He plays quiet and meditative music. The words of the music he uses draw out our personal relationship with God. There is emotion in that relationship, not unlike the emotion found in the Psalms. It's the same kind of communication. The words of the song and music life the spirit. St. Augustine said he who sings, prays twice. Fr. Matt said upbeat praise music can lead to more solemn worship as the Holy Spirit fills the place and you experience the deeper presence of God. The twofold action of liturgy is the people of God participating in worship are offering blessings to God and God in turn sanctifies his people. When you enter into worship, including the words of music, the Holy Spirit starts pouring out on people in a way that leads to a silence where you just want to be. Martin said the goal of praise and worship is silence where nothing more needs to be said. At the end of the conversation where you feel like God is ministering to you and you enter silence. It's not awkward silence, it's a pregnant silence. In our media-saturated culture, we need that silence and that music helps our brains to slow down to focus on the Eucharist and enter silence. Fr. Matt said he often sees Martin “calls an audible” while on his knees and playing the guitar during Adoration. Martin likened it to surfing where you have to adapt to the wave. He is very open to what God is saying to him, where He is leading. All of us are called to follow the promptings of the Spirit. We're not all called to be prophets like John the Baptist or Elijah, but we are called to be priest, prophet, and king in a sense. For Martin he feels an external prompting. For example, if he plans to start with O Salutaris, the traditional hymn for adoration, then O Come Let Us Adore Him, and then enter into silence. Perhaps he's planning on playing a particular song and suddenly a different song comes into his head and he may feel like he needs to play that one now. If he's looking for another song to play and he feels no prompting, he may take that to mean he's supposed to be silent. Martin said he's learned from the Charismatic renewal that you need to always be listening to the Lord in your prayer or daily life and when you do it can have powerful effects. 3rd segment: Scot noted the song we just heard is called “Legacy”. Martin wrote it to help us celebrated the bicentennial of the Archdiocese of Boston in 2008. Scot said 7 years ago he was encouraged to ask Martin Doman to lead worship for the Boston Men's and Women's Conferences, but all he'd heard was that he'd been a music leader for youth. But he later learned that Eucharistic praise and worship can help many people. Martin said singing praises to God is universal. It's not tied to a particular age group. But the style of music is contemporary so it naturally appeals to a younger audience. Yet as prayer it is universal. In terms of the style, a lot of the songs he plays break the mold of one genre. He worked a t a Pennsylvania parish for several years and there was one coarse, crusty and blunt elderly man who once came up to him to tell him to play a hymn in the book. It turned out to be a beautiful song although it was older. A lot of these old hymns that were lost after Vatican II were simple intimate prayer songs between God and people. These hymns were so important and personal to another generation so he likes to blend these older hymns in among the newer ones. They bring out that universal thirst for God. Scot said there has been a rich patrimony of hymns built up over 2,000 years, but Martin also writes new hymns. He asked Martin what it's like to put prayers in music. Martin said there's a rich tradition in our Church and he mines the prayers. He suggested the Manual of Prayers as a good resource because it contains many of the great prayers of our Church. Fr. Matt asked Martin what song he wants to be remembered for? Martin said after awhile everything you do is just an attempt to capture the beauty of God, but fail to do so completely. He loves St. Patrick's Breastplate. He said if someone asked him to play the one song he wants to play, it would be “My Desire” from his new CD. 4th segment: It's time to announce the winner of the weekly WQOM Benefactor Raffle. In honor of St. Therese, whose feast was this past week, our prize this week is “”, by Fr. Stephane Joseph Piat, OFM. This week's benefactor card raffle winner is Anne Magnus from Reading, MA. We'll be announcing the winner each Wednesday during “The Good Catholic Life” program. 5th segment: Scot asked Martin to give listeners his advice for parents choosing a good Catholic college for their kids. Martin said people typically think Notre Dame or Georgetown, but some colleges have come under fire for not being as Catholic as they used to be. He attended and works now at . Parents should look for a good education that prepares the student for life, not just for a job. College is pivotal for the life of a person in terms of life-changing decisions and so you need to given them a good foundation. The academic has to be good, with a curriculum that forms the whole person. They should also look at the student life on campus. The best measure of catholicity is whether the students are living the faith on campus. The peer pressure is positive toward living authentically. They don't have to be weird religious nuts, just cool kids who love God. He said at Ave Maria, he's come to know the faculty well and they really look at the foundations of the classics and where the Church's gifts come from. There's also a powerful sense of faith that's not in your faith. Scot asked what the faith life is like there and what makes it distinctive. Martin said it's not so much distinct from Steubenville. There's definitely a sense of deep reverence there. The location creates a different lifestyle. It's a relatively new college, but they have a student population that comes from all over. They are attracted by being in Florida, but also by the academics and faith environment. Fr. Matt said he's seen so many kids leave solid Catholic high school youth ministry to come back from college deflated by the hedonism they encountered at college, even at the best Catholic colleges and by the anti-Catholicism they encounter in the classroom. Then the campus ministry is often not strong in countering the tsunami of challenges to their faith. He said he tells students considering a particular school to check out the campus ministry as a way to gauge how they feel about the school and see how it will help them in school. At Ave Maria, they'd find opportunities to grow deeper in faith and to be converted. Scot said to consider whether students graduating from the school have a concept of a personal vocation. Martin said at Ave Maria they have a weekly program to talk about vocations, all of them, not just marriage. We have to look at our vocation as a call to holiness.
