I really want to start investing but I keep getting hung up on all the chatter out there. I can't figure out if I'm supposed to wait to start investing until I've paid off all my debt, or is that not smart to do? Also, it just feels like I need to be an expert at investing to do it well. Learning to tame your money anxiety takes some practice. I'm a big fan of this episode because I will be the first to raise my hand and shout, “I have money anxiety.” Our guest, Emily Rose, is here to enlighten us all on this topic of money anxiety. Emily is a school psychologist, yoga teacher, author of the journal Write it to Right it, and also runs the blog, MissMagnoliaSays.com. As Emily says, we all have anxiety around money, but for each of us, that looks a little different. Our biggest anxieties tend to come from the comparison trap - you know the “shoulds.” We're all familiar with the “shoulds,” right? I should know how to invest, I should do this with my money, I should have a good credit score or I should own a house right now. It's completely normal to run through the laundry list of things you should've done. In fact, Emily's overall message is that having anxiety is actually normal. See, we all have anxious thoughts around money and that's ok. In this episode, Emily helps you understand how anxiety might be showing up for you, ways to recognize those anxious thoughts, and some practical exercises to help you when you feel your money worries bubbling to the surface.LinksMissmagnoliasays blogWrite It To Right It JournalMoney Mindset JournalEpisode SponsorsA big thank you to all our sponsors who make this show possible:Try EveryPlate for just $1.79 per meal by going to http://www.everyplate.com and entering code mymoney179. · Give yourself – and your wallet – a break. Welcome back to another episode of Shannah Shares, Community Q&A where I tackle your listener questions. Today's question comes from Reisha. “Hi Shannah. Thank you for taking the time to listen to my question. I really want to make 2022 better than the years prior. I've had a lot of anxiety and stress around money and just started realizing it after listening to your podcast. I always wondered why I would get so stressed out when I looked at my bank account, or when my credit card balance wasn't decreasing so much, but then I would go and spend more money and get even more anxiety. It's crazy to me that we do those sorts of things as humans. I do have a good job and make what most might consider a good income. But, things fall apart for me every month. I always think I will end up with more money left, which I don't. I always think that I will just wake up one day and suddenly not be so stressed or anxious about money or my future, but I don't. I heard you say in one episode a year or so back that you have to first make peace with your money situation before you can move forward. I actually wrote that down in the notes on my phone and keep coming back to it. Can you give me some tips and thoughts, things to journal about, anything really that can help me move towards peace? I really don't want to spend the rest of my life stressed out about money when if you look at my take-home pay, I shouldn't. I imagine someone else out there is feeling the same way. Actually, maybe we're all ready to make peace. I think that's what I love about this show, you always make me feel special and your non-judgemental approach is so heartwarming. Seriously, thanks. Ok, I know this is a big question, but would love your thoughts.”Episode MentionsHere are the journal questions mentioned in this episode. What emotion/s are you holding on to about money? In what ways do you feel like money keeps you stuck? How have you attached your identity to money? In what ways did your parents, or whoever raised you, talk about money? If money didn't exist, how would your days, weeks, months, years change?Episode SponsorsFind out how Upstart can lower your monthly debt payments today when you go to UPSTART.com/mymoney. Welcome back to another episode of Shannah Shares, community Q&A. In this episode, I'm tackling a question from a MMP listener, Susanna. “Hi there, Shannah. I've been listening to the show for a while now and finally got up enough nerve to ask a question. I'm new at a company and looking all over the workplace benefit options has my head spinning. I don't know how to place any value on what I'm being offered, or really, what to pick. I'm also really thinking about money lessons from the pandemic and how that shapes my benefits - like hello mental health benefits. Also, I know I just started working for this company but I'm also considering making a big life change and start building my own business. Of course, if I do that, I loose out on all the juicy benefits…but again, I don't even really know if those are of value. Ok, so you see, I'm lost here. I'd love to hear any tips from you or experts who can help guide me in valuing all of this and thinking about takeaways from the pandemic. Oh, also, any tips for deciding if it's worth leaving these benefits behind because they can also be expensive. Thanks so much for answering my question.”I had a chance to speak with Marquis Smallwood, Vice President of Workforce Engagement at MetLife and Marsha Barnes, CEO of The Finance Bar, who deal with workplace benefits on a daily basis about this very question. Let's hear their advice on how to know what benefits work for you and how to value those benefits.LinksMetLifeThe Finance BarUpwise AppMarquis Smallwood on LinkedInEpisode SponsorsA big thanks to all the sponsors who make this episode possible:Find out how Upstart can lower your monthly debt payments today when you go to UPSTART.com/mymoney. Did you know that more than 30% of Americans struggle with their sleep? In this episode, we are talking with Matteo Franceschetti, the Co-Founder and CEO of Eight Sleep, the sleep fitness company. Along with his obsession for athletic performance, business performance, and now sleep performance Matteo and his team are the pioneers of sleep fitness technology.  Matteo has always been an athlete with an obsession with recovery and performance. After spending time as a securities lawyer and launching companies in the renewable energy space he rediscovered his passion for optimizing his body's performance. He realized there was an incredible need for smarter sleep products and this was where the idea for Eight Sleep was born! Their tech enabled mattress, the Pod significantly enhances your sleep quality through thermoregulation. Over the course of the night, the Pod detects your changing body temperature via sensors built into the mattress and sends its data to their app to track all of your vital information. They have recently created their Pod Pro Cover, which adds their patented thermoregulation technology to your existing mattress. While Eight Sleep has already made huge strides in the sleep fitness technology industry, they have only just begun! In today's episode, we discuss Matteo's journey to becoming CEO of Eight Sleep and what the future of sleep technology has in store for us. We cover the impact that sleep deprivation has on not only our health but how it has also caused billions of dollars and millions of working hours lost globally. Matteo also gives his insight into the future of sleep and sleep technology. During this conversation, we think outside the box and predict just how the future will change the way we look at sleep.  So relax! In #148, futurists learn from Sheridan Clayborne, a 21-year-old entrepreneurial sensation and the co-founder of Lendtable, a YC backed fintech startup tackling the retirement savings crisis that's raised over $6M from investors like Josh Richards, Bryce Hall, and SoftBank. The mission of Lendtable is simple: make everyone a millionaire, regardless of income level. They do this by giving no-interest loans to employees across America to help them take FULL advantage of their 401(k) match (or ESPP pools). In exchange, they take a small (5-10%) cut of the match. Some background on Sheridan: he was the youngest person to get into Northwestern at age 15, started his first million-dollar company when he was was 17, has worked at Dropbx and Goldman Sachs, and has done over $10mil in sales across his startups. I think Lendtable is the next unicorn and it's obvious that Sheridan is extremely passionate about the massive problem they're solving: people are not taking advantage of free money! Lendtable is a genius idea and an awesome interview, don't miss this crazy Gen Z founder story.
