Natasha Lennard is a Contributing Writer for the Intercept, and her work has appeared regularly in the New York Times, Esquire, Vice, Salon, and the New Inquiry, among others. She teaches in the Creative Publishing and Critical Journalism program at The New School for Social Research and is the author of two books: Violence: Humans in Dark Times, co-edited with Brad Evans, and Being Numerous: Essays on Non-Fascist Life, from Verso Books. In this interview I ask Natasha about the recent murder, by police, of Tyre Nichols, Keenan Anderson, and the environmental activist known as Tortuguita. She talks about the fact that these are just three of the more prominent deaths this year alone at the hands of police, and explains the relationship of these losses to the inherent violence of policing. What she makes clear is that, despite the fact that cops don't stop or prevent crime, and actually produce more violence than they stop, it is still the case that, for a number of reasons, the burden is never on those who align with carceral thinking to defend the police. And why is that the case? Because there is a deep ideological attachment to police and policing, to so-called “justice” in a carceral world. And that attachment is fed by a regime of representation that reinforces the heroism of cops in spite of all the evidence to the contrary. As a means of working through this problem, Natasha talks about Antonio Gramsci's notion of “common sense” as a tool for understanding some of the baseline assumptions that exist to regulate action and reaction. These are some complicated issues. And she admits that it's tricky. While we can fall into the trap of using what feel like exhausted ideas, the trap of political theatre, Lennard's analysis has a way of cutting through the contradictions and centring the fact of ongoing oppression. If you do that, then you move out of the theoretical debates about strategy and into the streets. For this reason, she celebrates the small but nimble and durable protests against Cop City in Atlanta. She speaks ardently in support of the need for trans liberation, and articulates that imperative against the array of powerful revanchist far-right forces who stand against it.
Part 2: “Mental Condition Black”Last week I told you about just a few of the incidents of officer-involved shootings so far this year. The first United States Climate Activist to be killed by authorities, Tyre Nichols, whose death and the subsequent charges to stem from it are being looked at as a blueprint for change. And the three men, Oscar Sanchez, Keenan Anderson, and Takar Smith, who were killed in Los Angeles within 48 hours of each other. Today, I'll be focusing on one case, that of Manuel Ellis of Tacoma. His beating and restraint-induced death was horrific, but hope remains that the responsible parties will face justice. In the first few days of 2023, the Los Angeles Police Department murdered three people in two days: Takar Smith, Oscar Sanchez and Keenan Anderson. Takar Smith was in the middle of a mental episode when his wife called the non emergency line for help. She was not looking for law enforcement intervention. She most certainly was not looking for her husband to be murdered. Unfortunately and tragically, both of those things took place. Adding insult to injury – the Police Protective League released a statement to the Los Angeles City Council defending the actions of police officers in all three murders. Joining us to discuss is Dr Melina Abdullah, a professor at UCLA and co-founder of the Los Angeles chapter of Black Lives Matter as well as co-founder of Black Lives Matter Grassroots. The majority were suspected of a non-violent offense or no crime at all, while another 8% were killed over a traffic violation. According to the Washington Post...while the number of fatal police shootings is increasing, fewer are being reported to the federal government. Researchers have said that the overall attempt to track police-involved shootings has failed. There are too many loopholes for police departments to not report their police-involved shootings. Five former Memphis police officers are charged with second degree murder in the death of Tyre Nichols. Footage of them reportedly beating Nichols after a traffic stop is set to be released to the public on Friday evening. On January 3rd, Keenan Anderson returned to the familiarity of L-A for what was supposed to be a short visit. He'd recently set out to embark on a new professional career: that of educator as a high school English teacher in Washington, D-C. Kenan hoped to collect a few belongings left behind in the city after the move to his new home. Instead, the man remembered by his uncle for his fearlessness in the face of challenge and adversity, was killed by officers of the Los Angeles Police Department. As tasers remain ubiquitous in police departments across the nation, and officers continue to kill using the weapon, we're left to wonder if they're truly “less lethal”. Alex Vitale, Professor of Sociology at Brooklyn College, author of City of Disorder: How the Quality of Life Campaign Transformed New York Politics and The End of Policing joins for more.

Just because only one percent of the eleven-thousand wineries in the U.S. are Black-owned, doesn't mean they don't exist. To get proof, they left their homes and tracked down an expert–Leslie Jones, co-owner of Inglewood's first and only wine bar, 1010 Wine. Thanks to their tireless reporting, jarrett and Tre'vell were able to get their hands–and mouths–on numerous glasses of wine from actual Black-owned wineries. Along the way, they learned about pushy wine reps, why it's better to hold the stem than the bowl, and what inspires someone to open the first wine bar in Inglewood.Mentioned in the Show1010WineAAAVDIS/Honorable Mentions Tre'VellHM: Truth Be Told on Apple TVjarettHM: @snoopdoggydomCelebrating Black History Month early with her products at Target! The world is a mob…; most people cannot overcome the crowd and the spirit of the mob is the same around the world. Most people are afraid to walk away free, instead, they stay imprisoned by the identity of the crowd. You must be born again. BLM protests the death of Keenan Anderson…; — Pamela from North Carolina says she is 50 years old and is dating a 60-year-old. They are not married and wonders if it's still ok to have sex. Jesse says sex is not bad, it's just that doing it in an unconscious way brings about jealousy and emoticons, all things one should overcome.
Natasha from Texas says the cops mistreated Keenan Anderson. Tyler from Virginia says he is a nice guy and wonders if he is a beta. Jesse asks him why he is so into his emotions, Tyler says he 'chooses joy'. Back to Natasha… — Dana from Florida speaks on the interview Jesse had with some Israelites in 1995. He wants to see them back on as a guest to see where they ended up today. Dave from Connecticut asks about the building fund. Ron from the Bahamas thanks, Jesse.
Jason Middleton and Jennifer Jones Lee accompany Bill for Handel on the News! Some of the stories they discuss include: Tulare County Sheriff Mike Bourdreaux originally blamed the execution of a 10-month-old on the Mexican Cartel, but then backtracked. The family of Keenan Anderson is calling for LAPD reform after his wrongful death, and a helicopter crash near Kyiv has killed 18 and injuring 30 others; one of the victims includes Ukrainian Minister Denis Monastyrsky.
Why do democrats want illegal immigrants in the country? For votes? Could the next election be our last? Are more College students hating Israel? On this episode of ‘Grab A Glass', DT discusses strengths vs. weaknesses, the death of Keenan Anderson & the responsibility of tact from police (again).
WARNING: THIS EPISODE CONTAINS CONTENT SOME PEOPLE WILL FIND DISTURBING. After the last episode of OUTCAST UK we had to turn off comments on our George Floyd chat after the video got the attention of people on Tik Tok denying that it was a murder and making baseless claims to discredit the victim and the family. We made this bonus episode to comment on this initially. Then it became important to also bare witness to the latest act of police violence against people of colour. In the United States, LA Police repeatedly tasered Keenan Anderson, an unarmed black man who later died in hospital, the latest in a wave of deaths at the hands of the LAPD in the first few weeks of 2023. The high school english teacher and father flagged officers down for help after a car accident. The same thing happened here, people began to blame the victim for their own death. There is a pattern. In the UK the case of Ngozi Fulani being victim blamed after flagging up what many believed to be evidence of structural racism in the royal household, later having the charity commission investigate her organisation. According to The Voice "SISTAH SPACE boss Ngozi Fulani was cleared of wrongdoing by the Charity Commission, but some are questioning why the charities regulator launched an investigation in the first place. The announcement of the investigation by government-appointed quango last month came after a torrent of race-hate on social media aimed at Fulani, and criticism of her in mainstream newspapers." News of her being cleared by the commisssion was not picked up by most of the UK press. What ties all these together? Victim blaming. Then moments before we made this bonus episode, a man in Manchester tweeted about his experience of racism from cis gender white gay men in the city. We're commenting on all of this in this hot take on all the issues our last episode brought up and what's happened in the world this first half of January 2023. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/outcastuk/message

Bonus Extra Episode regarding the police interaction with disgraced BLM founder's cousin Keenan Anderson. This kind of behavior is gotten insane and ridiculous. We HAVE TO STOP CELEBRATING AND MARTYRING CRIMINALS. This is why we live in a society where this happens and the media love it. This should be a NON STORY... he broke the law, ran from an accident, ran from police twice and then aggressively resisted arrest. I don't know what else to say on this. This isn't about race, this is about someone that was tased to subdue until he subdued and died 4.5 hours later. WTF world do we live in where the cops were in the wrong. Full Stop.

It's Casual Friday! Sam and Emma host Ryan Grim, DC Bureau Chief at The Intercept, to round up the week in news. First, Emma runs through updates on Merrick Garland's investigation into the President having access to classified documents, the House increasing member compensation, the LAPD's killing of Keenan Anderson, and the horrific cost of severe weather events in the US, before she and Sam dive into Kevin McCarthy's debut press conference immediately devolving to back-to-back conflicting statements. Ryan Grim then joins as he gets right into assessing the start of this term of a Republican-led House, walking through the central components of his concessions, beginning with the return to obsessing about the debt ceiling, before touching on the discharge petition, how it opens the door to Democratic legislation, and who's relevance in Congress it might increase. They also tackle the likelihood of a social security cut, whether Hakeem Jeffries will push a Stock Trading Ban, the Democrats' role in GOP committees, and the future of anti-trust and anti-inflation policy, before wrapping up the interview by analyzing the upcoming battle for Dianne Feinstein's seat. And in the Fun Half: Emma and the MR Crew discuss the bad faith that goes into anti-vaxxers' arguments on increases to cardiac arrest and myocarditis numbers, Candace Owens' takes on hunting Fauci and being a black figurehead for white supremacy, and Louis from Palm springs talks movie recs. James from FT Worth discusses arming teachers, Glenn Beck debunks the globalists' diet, and Hakeem Jeffries goes the Lin-Manuel route of focusing on platitudes over policies. Matt Gaetz fills in for Steve Bannon to talk with George Santos, and it's just as wild as you'd expect, and Matt from Seattle discusses updates on the Wizards of the Coast's (Dungeons and Dragons, Magic the Gathering) attempt to crack down on the creative license to their games, plus, your calls and IMs! Yesterday, like tens of millions of Americans, I saw the brutal police murder of 31-year-old Keenan Anderson, by the LAPD in broad daylight. Keenan, like so many Black men before him, was unarmed and non-violent. At most he needed medical attention. Instead, he was Tasered to death. And we continue to see this, with new names and faces, but the same story of police violence, because this country just barely tinkers with policing when the entire system would actually need to be completely overhauled in order for us to see something totally different. It can be done. But so far not even one single large American city is willing to drastically overhaul how policing is done there. And so we continue to be the only developed nation in the world that does this, day after day, year after year, to its citizens. Let me unpack and explain it all. Anderson was the cousin of a co-founder of Black Lives Matter and his death along with two other men in police custody have led to Mayor Karen Bass calling for investigations.
