Turn Your Authentic Story Into HIT Songs, Part 2, With Robin Frederick![121624]

As I sat in the dimly lit grand ballroom listening to Robin Frederick's presentation at this year's TAXI Road Rally, I noticed how nearly every person in the audience was leaning forward. Just a tad. Not quite bent over, but definitely leaning in the direction of the stage where a single spotlight illuminated the gravitas of what Robin was saying. Why were 1,000 musicians leaning toward her? Because Robin sucks people into what she's saying. She was giving one of her famous brain dumps in which you can't take notes quickly enough. Every word matters! And every concept she freely gives away could be that ONE thing that helps you take your songs from really good to really, REALLY good. So good that one person asks another, “Have you heard that song?” There's not a songwriter alive who doesn't pray for that reaction. I'm right, huh? You know exactly what I'm talking about, don't you? Well, this past November, Robin covered a topic that she's never covered before; How to Turn Your Authentic Story into Hit Songs. And you could hear a pin drop in that ballroom.

There are so many ways to get paid for your work in the age of digital music, that I admit that I'm confused as to who exactly pays what. One thing I do know is that the people who attended the presentation by the MLC (Mechanical Licensing Collective) at this year's TAXI Road Rally were SO glad they went! They were so grateful that I've invited one the MLC's top executives (Serona Elton, Head of Educational Partnerships) to join us on this week's TAXI TV. I've met with her on Zoom, and she's really good at explaining why you really could have money just sitting there waiting for you, and what you can do to collect it! Serona is also the Director of the Music Business Program at the University of Miami, my alma mater, so I like her even more!!!

If you were at this year's TAXI Road Rally (our annual FREE conference), you were part of what many of the attendees are saying was the best we've ever produced in 28 years. We humbly agree! There was something special in the air. Maybe it was the quality of the Ballroom Panels, the One-to-One Mentor sessions, the Eat & Greet Luncheons, the Drivers Ed breakout classes, the Sponsors, or the music industry Networking… or maybe it was all of those things. One thing for sure is that the TAXI members who come made it special. I've never seen a happier, more motivated, or more excited group of attendees in all the years we've been gathering for the Road Rally. If you couldn't join us, this might sound like marketing hyperbole. If you were there, you know exactly what I'm talking about! And you know that it's not an exaggeration! Not even a little bit. Let's capture that lightning in a bottle… I'm going to share a bunch of Rally photos and member comments during this week's TAXI TV episode. A lot of them! Maybe you'll see some shots of yourself or hear your comments read out loud. I also have an ulterior motive for doing this episode: I want to hear from you about what YOU think made this year's Rally so special, so we can make it even better next year! “Do more of this, or less of that,” sort of feedback is what I want to hear. I also want people who didn't come to hear how powerful and career-changing the Rally is because frankly, there are still a lot of members who don't know what they're missing. I think they'd rather hear it from the horse's mouth, rather than the “boss's mouth.”

As I was grabbing my notes from a table on the stage during last weekend's TAXI Road Rally, I overheard a musician talking with a music supervisor who had just finished speaking on a panel. The TAXI member said, “Scan my QR code and it will take you to my linktr.ee that has links to my bio, Soundcloud, Instagram, Facebook, my videos, and a bunch of other stuff.” Without missing a beat, the music supervisor asked, “Why don't you have a website?” Why wouldn't you put all of your music, photos, bio, videos, and social media all in one place? Why make it harder than it needs to be for the people who want to know about you to learn everything they can about you? So, I invited Joseph Longo from Bandzoogle to join us for this week's episode! He was my guest about a year ago, and he was so good at explaining all of this that I called his boss the next day to tell him how what a great job Joseph did! Win a FREE Thirty-Minute Website Consultation with Joseph! I've also asked Joseph if he would give away a consulting session with one of our viewers who either needs feedback on their existing website or wants advice on what their website should feature if they choose to build one.

I'll never forget the raging enthusiasm I felt bursting forth from Marcus Cohen (aka (CaiNo) when I met him at his first TAXI Road Rally about 6 years ago. In that moment, it was obvious to me that he'd become successful. He was at the Rally with his mom and creative partner — Sherry Marcus Milano — who's also a force of nature! It's not an exaggeration to say that music libraries and other music licensing professionals are now figuratively banging their doors down, asking for music from Marcus, Sherry, and his brother Ethan as well. They've got more requests than they can handle. Isn't that the dream for most musicians? How Marcus and His Family Have Done It That's the thrust of exactly what I want to find out! Trailers, TV Cues & Sound Design: The Similarities and Differences Explained Randon Purcell doesn't need TAXI anymore! Here's why... "Hey Michael! I hope you and the family are all well! Everything here is madness, but going well enough. My job at [name withheld] is keeping me plenty busy, and I'm even doing some side scoring gigs on some movies with my boss, so that's fun too. I just got signed on to do the score for a new animated show as well, later this year, so 2022 should be busy as ever. Anyway, I just wanted to touch base and see how things are going. I don't get a chance to hop on the TAXI forums much these days, but I love it when I can give back a little to the TAXI community. After all, I wouldn't be a full-time musician without you guys! Hope all is well and that The TAXI Road Rally will be in-person again this year! Take care, Randon" Yep, that's why Randon doesn't need TAXI any more...he's too busy making music for his full-time income! Why is he so busy? "I wouldn't be a full time musician without you guys!" It was the sentence prior to that, that prompted me to ask Randon to join us for this week's TAXI TV episode. "I love it when I can give back a little to the TAXI community." Without hesitation, I asked Randon to join me to explain the similarities and differences between creating music for Film Trailers and TV Promos, TV Shows, and Sound Design...for that matter, can you really explain exactly what sound design is, and how it's done? I'm not so sure I could, but I'd bet a pretty penny that Randon can! And ask him, I will! Randon is a very smart, pragmatic, hard-working person. His climb up the ladder of success took a few years and a lot of work. I think he might be able to shave some time from your climb by sharing what he's learned along the way. - If you're already creating Instrumental Cues, what do you need to know to create Film Trailer and TV Promo music? - Is sound design more like music or sound effects, or a combination of both? - How do you get paid for creating a whoosh, a braaam, or a distorted, growly tension drone? - Which synth patches work for what? - How are the arrangements similar or different? - How is scoring a TV show different than creating Cues that could be used in an episode of the very same show? - How much income can you earn from each one of these disciplines?

7 HABITS Of SUCCESSFUL MEDIA COMPOSERS With Six - Figure Composer Stephen Baird.

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 24, 2021 91:22

I could tell Stephen Baird was going to be successful when I first met him at a TAXI Road Rally more than a dozen years ago. He was immediately likable, willing to work hard, and he was wearing a bright green T-shirt that read, “CARRIES NO CA$H.” He came to the Rally, asked the right questions, saw what his path needed to be, and then he got busy. VERY busy! No job was too big or small. No work day was too long. Stephen became a Six-Figure Composer faster than most because he worked harder than most! His music is in a ton of catalogs, and I have little doubt that it’s heard on TV every day of the year. Probably, all over the world! Here’s another reason I like Stephen so much – he’s a class act. While the majority of TAXI members who land deals and placements often forget to tell us when our work helps them get a deal or a placement, Steve Baird takes the time to write letters like this… Hey Michael, I joined TAXI in September of 2007 with nothing more than Reason 2.5 and an old Roland keyboard from the 1980's. Until joining TAXI, I knew nothing about the Film/TV/Advertising market. Actually, I was quite the newbie. Now, nearly 5 years later, I'm in my second year of making a full-time living writing for TV shows, commercials, promos, and movie trailers. Nearly every penny I have made can be traced back to TAXI. Either directly through a forward, or indirectly through people I have met at the Road Rally or on the TAXI forum. I'm really quite ecstatic with the way things have turned out. Not only am I making as much or more money than most of my friends, but I'm doing so via a career that I have dreamed about since I was a child. If it wasn't for TAXI, I wouldn't have a music career. I can't even imagine what my life would be like right now. So, I'd just like to thank you for offering such a great service to aspiring musicians, composers, artists, and bands. Not just for the opportunities offered through the listings, but for creating such a great environment for musicians to learn and grow. You've definitely changed my life, and for that, I am forever grateful. -Steve I think that letter is a great example of one of the 7 Habits of Successful Composers: expressing gratitude to those who have helped you on the way up. I have never forgotten how that letter made me feel when I first read it. But, expressing gratitude is just one of the 7 habits, and I’m going to ask Steve to let you know what the other 6 habits are on this week’s TAXI TV. There’s a lot to be learned from this young man, and you’ll only be cheating yourself by forgetting to watch the live show on Monday at 4pm (PDT).

On this episode of TAXI TV, we ask if you want to see TAXI Music's CEO cry!! Join us as we bid a fond farewell to a beloved staff member! We first met Briagha McTavish when she was a teenager, who along with her dad (Neil McTavish), would come to the TAXI Road Rally to hone her skills as a singer/songwriter. We looked forward to seeing her each year, and got to know her as one of our very favorite members and TAXI Road Rally volunteers. When she graduated from high school, Briagha called TAXI to let us know she was moving to Los Angeles, and asked if we had any job openings. As it turned out, we had a temp job making outbound reminder calls to members about the upcoming Rally Music Convention. Briagha hit it out of the park, and we offered her a full-time job. She’s been an integral and highly-valued part of the staff for about four years, and we’ve watched her grow up right under our noses. It’s bittersweet that Monday will be Briagha’s last “official” day at TAXI, because she’s decided she loves her fiancé Jacob more than us. We’re really happy for the two of them, but sad to see Briagha move back to the Midwest! Please join us as we roast her and toast her on this week’s TAXI TV. Instead of kicking me under the desk (she has been the producer of many, many TAXI TV episodes), she’ll be joining me on camera :-) If you’ve got any Briagha stories about how she helped you when she was our member services superstar, or working hard at the Road Rally, please join us as we bid this lovely young lady a fond farewell! The two most common “reasons,” I’ve heard for lack of success over the last 28 years are: - I’ve got a full-time job. - I’ve got a family. So does Keith LuBrant (rhymes with Lou Grant), and his music has been in 750 different TV shows! Yes, you read that correctly, Keith’s music has been in 750 TV shows!!! Henry Winckel wasn’t happy with TAXI. He was frustrated, discouraged, and not enjoying any success. Henry is also a good listener, a determined individual, and opened his mind to new and different ideas, tactics, and techniques. I’m going to interview Henry live, via telephone on this episode of TAXI TV. If you’ve ever been frustrated by your lack of forward movement with TAXI, then this is an episode you really need to watch! Henry pulls no punches – he’s very direct, very truthful, and doesn’t mince words. If you think this is going to be some bought and paid for “fanboy” episode, then think again! This could very well be the episode of TAXI TV that causes the breakthrough moment you’ve been waiting for during your entire music career! BONUS: After Henry’s interview, I’m going to reveal what many of the Grand Ballroom Panels will be at this year’s TAXI Road Rally convention, coming up in November! Cool stuff, don’t miss it! ------------------------------------ Learn More About TAXI: http://bit.ly/2mPVGYh Rub Elbows with Music Industry Pros at Our FREE Yearly Convention: http://bit.ly/2a9mwlp View Our Current Music Industry Opportunities: http://bit.ly/28JPUyd Connect with Fellow Songwriters on the TAXI Forum: http://bit.ly/2DENChs Listen on the Go with the TAXI TV Podcast: Apple Podcasts: http://apple.co/2afebwW Google Play: http://bit.ly/2a7cCQX Stitcher: http://bit.ly/2FuSTJQ Soundcloud: http://bit.ly/2icUDe0 TuneIn: http://bit.ly/2DCzKrd Connect With Us On... www.TonyTrombo.com My guests are Pete and Pat Luboff. We are songwriters, music publishers and songwriting educators. For many years we were music business photojournalists and arts administrators. In 40 years of working as a team, we have built a broad base of knowledge of the music business with particular emphasis in all aspects of songwriting and have developed extensive contacts with hundreds of songwriters, producers, music publishers and record label executives. As songwriters, we have had success with "Trust Me," the first single on Snoop Dogg's "Topp Dogg" album, "I Wish He Didn't Trust Me So Much," a No. 2 chart recording by Bobby Womack, "Body Language" cut by Patti LaBelle (gold album) and the featured song in the John Travolta movie, "The Experts," "The Son My Daddy Never Had," a charting Country single with Miko Marks, and recordings by Michael Peterson, Glenn Jones, among others. We have been teaching songwriting workshops since 1979 and currently conduct workshops in Nashville.  We also travel to teach workshops.  Recent cities we’ve done workshops in are New York, Washington DC, Chicago, Seattle, Indianapolis and Denver.  Click here to find out more about hosting a Luboff workshop in your town.  And here to read what songwriters have said about us. For almost 20 years, Pete conducted the Monday night workshops at the National Academy of Songwriters. Pete also taught advanced songwriting at UCLA for 13 years.  We’ve both taught workshops at the Taxi Road Rally and screened extensively for Taxi.  We also have judged for various songwriting contests, including the Just Plain Folks, John Lennon, and Great American Song contests.

Having pivoted her business once successfully, Ariel is now exploring the universal applications of her Cyber PR® philosophy and platform, to public relations campaigns at large.
