This artist became a rapper at the age of 9. Lil Wayne came from a tough childhood before exploring his talent for rapping as a member of the Hot Boys. With growing popularity, he pursued his solo career and released Tha Carter in 2004 and Tha Carter II in 2005. He was ready to take on the mantle of "Best Rapper Alive" and collaborated with artists such as Fall Out Boy and Fat Joe. Lil Wayne found success in 2008 with Tha Carter III, which included hit singles "A Milli" and "Lollipop", earning him 4 Grammys that year. Following Tha Carter III, he released IV and V, along with mixtapes. Even during his prison sentence in 2010, he released the album "I Am Not a Human Being", which debuted at #2 on the Billboard 200. Lil Wayne has sold over 120 million records worldwide and introduced a new generation of rappers, including Drake, Nicki Minaj, and Tyga through his record label, Young Money Entertainment. Over his career Lil Wayne won numerous awards — from the Grammys, BET, Billboard, VMAs, and NAACP — cementing his legacy as one of hip-hop's greatest. Watch Behind the Music now on Paramount+. The 2009 Grammys were weird as hell. Matt and Tim cover that weirdness in great depth before digging into the especially weird Best Album category. Robert Plant and Allison Krauss won that year, and Ne-Yo was there too. But Lil Wayne's Tha Carter III gets the Spin nod here and man is he as odd as ever. After Weezy discussion, Matt goes fully in his bag and gets to talk about Radiohead's In Rainbows and, finally, Coldplay and Viva La Vida. He's got an uphill battle with Tim, tune in to see if he can pull off that Coldplay best exemplifies the 2009 of it all.

Lil Wayne dropped Tha Carter III on June 10, 2008 and made history selling 1 million coppies in the first week when nobody else could and so much more. I go track by track and in the history of the album. And add in my own memories.
Whats Up Folks! and Welcome to the Podcast, Wylers World Wide and Loved ones alike. Topics include: - Today was the 12th birthday of Tha Carter III. So I only felt it was right to reflect on this time period for me, and slowly watching Lil Wayne transition from ours to every bodies. - A story about Culture. Me and my bros home girl was talking and she used gang banging in an attempt to confirm whether or not me and her knew the same person. Which led me to ponder about just how culturally vast this world really is. - Younger Generations of Chinese have started a "Lying Flat" social movement to oppose the strenuous "9-9-6" work load over there. Which led me to think about jobs in america have some difficulty getting employees back to work because of low pay VS unemployment during the pandemic. I talked about Steven Universe for a good chunk of this episode and didn’t even mention the music. SMH. Anyway, if you are or you aren’t a member of the Crystal Gems army, I try to give you a good starting point to get to know Steven, Amethyst, Pearl, and Garnet. From there, I reminisce about the hip-hop blogs of yore and wonder if they’re really a shell of their former selves or if I’m just not into it enough to find the reigning, defending, undisputed blogs of today. I wrap things up by celebrating another anniversary, as I recall the impact that Lil Wayne’s Tha Carter III had on hip-hop and music in general. I think I’m ready to talk about Scorpion now. Heaven help us all. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/hyphen-nation/support

Cameo Carlson is currently head of digital business development at Borman Entertainment, a management company that takes care of artists including country stars Keith Urban and Lady Antebellum. Cameo has been at the forefront of the digital music revolution from its earliest stages and Billboard Magazine has named her one of the industry’s top mobile executives. She has been involved in radio, from terrestrial to online, and was the rock and alternative music director for AOL Music. She spent three years as manager of label relations and music programming at iTunes and has been the executive VP of Universal MoTown Republic where her role included mobile, online and digital sales, promotions and business development for artists such as Drake, Amy Winehouse, Lil Wayne, and Jack Johnson to name a few. With Lil Wayne, she made the rare move of releasing six songs from "Tha Carter III" as individual downloads on iTunes before the album was released, using the "Complete My Album" feature to drive album sales. The result: 52% of his digital album sales came as a result of "Complete My Album" purchases. She has been responsible for three of the 10 biggest digital albums in history as well as breaking mobile ringtone records for first week sales, top-selling of all time and number of multi-platinum sales. To say Cameo can share some insight into the current industry is putting it lightly! We talk about all kinds of things including digital strategy, how to engage fans depending on the music genre, how to get featured on the front page of iTunes, and a whole lot more! Aaron Bethune. Music Specialist.
