Jim and Ray welcome Thailand's renowned scholar and journalist Dr. Thitinan Pongsudhirak to help them understand why the past quarter century has seen Thailand's politics in a state of near-constant turmoil, and what the prospects are for the years ahead.Dr. Thitinan explains how the conservative forces of Thailand's monarchy, judiciary and military have used their institutional power to sideline repeated electoral victories by populist and reformist groups. He discusses how the one-time outsider Thaksin Shinawatra has overcome being deposed by military coup to return to power behind the scenes with the election of his daughter Paetongtarn as prime minister. He also unpacks Thailand's political youth movement, and how it actually won the most votes in the last election but was prevented from taking power by an alliance of the country's traditional powers and Thaksin. He explains how this young party–now called the People's Party–remains a potent force.Thailand's turmoil has led to economic stagnation as foreign investment has shied away from the uncertainty of its politics, but Dr. Thitinan believes stability in the medium term should usher in a period of growth.Geopolitically, Thailand has been among America's least reliable allies, he contends, because its anti-democratic forces have driven it in the direction of more autocratic regimes like China's. Meanwhile, the Thai government faces pressure from Beijing to send Uyghur refugees back to China, which is opposed by the U.S.Thailand is also dealing with threats to its security from across the border, where Myanmar's civil war threatens to spill over.Dr. Thitinan is a professor of international relations and international political economy at Bangkok-based Chulalongkorn University's Faculty of Political Science and a senior fellow at its Institute of Security and International Studies. He is also a senior advisor with our podcast's sponsor, BowerGroupAsia. Our podcast is produced by IEJ Media, sharing news that matters on statecraft & instruments of national power.Sponsored by BowerGroupAsia, a strategic advisory firm that specializes in the Indo-Pacific.

Political stalemate is diminishing Thailand’s international stature and economy Synopsis: The Straits Times' global contributor Nirmal Ghosh shines a light on Asian perspectives of global and Asian issues with expert guests. Thailand, once seen as a rising middle power, is now stuck in political and economic stagnation that are affecting its international standing. Its years of political turmoil had caused its economy to underperform, with GDP growing by 1.9 per cent in 2023. While economists expect around GDP growth at 2.7 per cent in 2024 and 2.9 per cent in 2025 - the growth is inadequate to satisfy demands and expectations. Thailand is currently under the relatively new Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra, the 38-year-old daughter of former PM Thaksin Shinawatra. But its “old guard” institutions have not allowed the country to progress politically, which are controlling political outcomes through agencies like the constitutional court, the election commission, the anti-corruption commission and the Senate, says Professor Thitinan Pongsudhirak, a senior fellow of the Institute of Security and International Studies at Chulalongkorn University's Faculty of Political Science. Meanwhile, Thailand's international standing has diminished - though the country’s size and geographic location mean it remains a key player in the region. The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) is also divided on contentious issues such as the ongoing civil war in Myanmar. While former Thai Prime Minister Thaksin has been appointed an informal advisor to next year’s Asean chair, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, expectations are low. The former premier, as well as Prime Minister Anwar himself, are from an older generation - but Asean needs a younger generation to lead it forward, says Professor Thitinan, who is currently a visiting professor as well at the London School of Economics, in this episode with host Nirmal Ghosh. Japan PM Kishida steps down and opens up new leadership contest within the LDP.  Is it 'plus ca change' in the case of Japanese politics?  Clan politics seem to be the name of the game in two Southeast Asian countries -- Thailand and Indonesia.  Thailand's new PM is the formerly exiled Thaksin Shinawatra's daughter and the Shinawatra family seem to be on the mend with other significant actors in Thailand.  Indonesia's outgoing president Jokowi was supposed to be the outsider but now seems to be ensuring that his family/clan will be signficant insiders in Indonesian politics.  Lastly, NZ PM Chris Luxon gave an important foreign policy speech in Sydney.  So now that Luxon talks the talk, the question remains is can he also walk the walk considering the difficult economic situation NZ finds itself in today.

Wing Vasiksiri, General Partner of WV, and Jeremy Au discussed three main themes: 1. Thaksin Lese-Majeste & PM Lawsuits: Recent legal events (Thailand's court delay in the verdict on dissolving the Kao Klai (Move Forward Party), Thaksin Shinawatra lawsuit and PM Srettha Thavisin cabinet hearing) contribute to political instability, affecting investor confidence and stock market performance. They also discussed the economic impact of Thailand's highest interest rate in a decade at 2.5%, and the ongoing conflict between the Prime Minister and the Bank of Thailand over whether to lower rates to stimulate growth. The country's economic growth forecast stands at 2.6%, lagging behind neighbors like Indonesia and Vietnam. 2. 2029 Super-Aged Population: Thailand reached the "aged" demographic milestone in 2023 (20% of its population 60+ years old), and is projected to become a "super-aged" society by 2029. This shift presents challenges such as increased social welfare burdens and reduced productivity. However, it also creates opportunities in sectors like healthcare and elder care.  They also noted the trend towards health-conscious consumer behavior, indicating potential for businesses to cater to this demographic shift. 3. D2C Consumer & VC Opportunities: They discussed the success of Thai and Singaporean D2C companies like "After You," a dessert chain that went public by localizing consumer food preferences. Wing highlighted a common issue where many companies seek venture capital (VC) without being suitable for it. He clarified that venture capital is a specific type of financing intended for highly volatile and high-growth potential businesses. He also emphasized that raising venture capital does not inherently validate a company's worth and pointed out that VC suitability depends on the business's ability to capture significant enterprise value quickly, often driven by market dislocations such as technological advancements or regulatory changes. Jeremy and Wing also compared consumer market trends in Thailand vs. Singapore, regulatory changes for marijuana and alcohol production, and public-private partnerships in supporting infrastructure projects. Greg and Ed revisit the 2006 coup in Thailand and reminisce about the oddness but also impactfulness of the experience. Ed begins with a quick recap of the career of Thaksin Shinawatra, the billionaire business tycoon who swept to power (democratically) in 2000 on a promise to fix the Thai economy which was still reeling from the 1997 financial crisis. He did in fact manage to stabilize the economy and easily won re-election in 2004. Although controversies did mar his terms, his ability to repay loans to the World Bank and IMF lent him significant credibility.  However, in 2006, a constitutional crisis ensued in parliament, and eventually, while Thaksin was away in New York giving a speech to the United Nations, the military seized control of the government. Ed relates his utter shock at waking up to headlines of “COUP D'ETAT,” and Greg talks about the strange expectation of tanks rolling through the streets and whether or not it was even going to be safe going outside. Alas, the coup was real but also almost entirely peaceful, with soldiers manning the streets accepting flowers and taking selfies with pedestrians. The guys wonder at the difference between pre-coup Thailand and post-coup Thailand, the relative peace beforehand and the almost constant political drama since. In their time in Thailand, the guys can't think of another single event that changed life in the Land of Smiles as much as the 2006 coup.  Don't forget that Patrons get the ad-free version of the show as well as swag and other perks. Manchester City are in the process of extending their most important and lucrative sponsorship deal, with Etihad, the Abu Dhabi-based airline, whose brand is synonymous with the club following the takeover by Sheikh Mansour's Abu Dhabi United Group (ADUG), which bought 90 per cent of the club from Thaksin Shinawatra, the former prime minister of Thailand, in 2008. But, for obvious reasons, this is not just another sponsorship renewal. The City-Etihad relationship plays a central role in a much bigger story: The Premier League has accused Manchester City of more than 100 violations of its financial regulations, rules breaches that it says began more than a decade ago and continue to present day.Manchester City says it has done nothing wrong and declared itself “surprised” at the airing of what it referred to as “alleged breaches.” So the looming court case will match the one of the world's richest sporting competitions against its most successful member clubs. The catalyst for today's conversation is a piece written by Nick Harris, former Mail on Sunday investigative journalist, and one of our guests today.Joining Nick is Stefan Borson, a corporate lawyer and investment banker who helped manage the sale of Manchester City in 2008. It's fair to say they don't agree. *) Ex-PM Thaksin jailed on return to Thailand after 15 years in exile Thailand's former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra was sent to jail on Tuesday shortly after he returned to the kingdom after 15 years in exile. The latest political development comes just hours before parliament votes to install his party's candidate as new prime minister. At the airport in Bangkok, the 74-year-old billionaire was greeted by hundreds of supporters waving banners and singing songs, demonstrating how he has retained an outsized influence despite his long absence. *) Russia says jet 'destroys' Ukraine reconnaissance boat in Black Sea Russia's defence ministry said that one of its Sukhoi jets had "destroyed" a Ukrainian "reconnaissance boat" in the Black Sea. The vessel reportedly sailed near a Russian gas production facility prompting a response from Moscow. Earlier, Russia claimed that its ships were targeted by a Ukrainian naval drone attack. *) BRICS summit of emerging economies to begin in South Africa Leaders of the BRICS nations are due in South Africa to discuss expanding membership amid a push to forge the bloc as a counterweight to the West. South Africa's president, Cyril Ramaphosa will host Chinese President Xi Jinping, Brazil's Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the country's largest city, Johannesburg, from Tuesday to Thursday. Russian President Vladimir Putin, however, is skipping the meeting amid concerns that he could be arrested due to an outstanding international warrant for alleged war crimes in Ukraine. Over 40 countries said they are interested in joining BRICS, but India and Brazil have expressed some reservation, over concerns that the expansion could dilute the bloc's global influence. *) Japan to start releasing Fukushima water on Thursday Japan is expected to release on Thursday the water from the Fukushima nuclear power plant, 12 years after one of the world's worst nuclear disasters. The nuclear plant was knocked out by a massive earthquake and tsunami that killed around 18,000 people in March 2011. Japan insists the gradual release of the water is safe, but there are concerns that the more than 500 Olympic swimming pools' worth of water is contaminated. The operator of the plant said the water has been filtered to remove all radioactive substances except the chemical tritium, adding that the amount to be released are far below dangerous levels. *) Kenya's young Maasai reconnect with their culture at Eunoto ceremony Hundreds of young Kenyan men have come to a village in the country's south to join a ceremony reconnecting them with their culture and traditions. Aged between 18 and 26, the young men all descended from the same generation of Maasai warriors. For centuries, Maasai men have gone through rites of passage which have been inscribed since 2018 on the UNESCO list of intangible heritage in need of safeguarding. For many, it is a matter of survival to preserve the traditions and culture of the most famous of Kenya's 45 tribes.

What does the recent election mean for the country's path forward? Will the military's election commission let the opposition form a government, or will it stage another coup like in 2014? Has Thai society finally moved on from the Yellow Shirt-Red Shirt divide that paralyzed the country's politics for the past two decades? Thailand will be holding its general elections less than a week, on 14 May. This upcoming election is shaping up to be the most competitive one since 2011. In the past, elections have almost always favoured the current opposition party Pheu Thai led by former premier Thaksin Shinawatra. Now, Thaksin – more specifically his daughter – is now back in the spotlight as Pheu Thai tries to repeat its electoral feats of the past. Will this election produce political stability, and free up the government from military rule to focus on economic transformation, or will there be a return of large-scale demonstrations in Bangkok like in 2013-14? Angela Mancini, Partner, speaks with Harrison Cheng, Director and South East Asia Lead Analyst to find out what all these mean for foreign investors. Greg begins by explaining the momentous time we live in: soon there will be a general election in the Land of Smiles. He turns to Ed, allegedly a professor of political science, to give a primer (long ‘i') on the upcoming election scene, but with a focus on how we got here in the first place.  Ed begins by going all the way back to the elections of 2000, when Thailand was reeling from the economic crisis of 1997 and straddled with billions of dollars of debt to the IMF. On to the scene marched a nouveau riche Thai billionaire, Thaksin Shinawatra, who confidently promised to repay the government's debts early (which he did, as a matter of fact). Thaksin formed a surprisingly broad coalition of Isaan farmers and a fairly sizable chunk of the Bangkok middle class. After an economically successful but otherwise controversial first term, he was re-elected in 2004 in more or less a landslide. However, this apparent ‘success' led to a backlash in the form of a coup d'etat from a conservative establishment in 2006, followed by years of political turmoil. After Thaksin's sister Yingluck won an election in 2012, another coup followed in 2014. Since then, the military has held a firm grasp on the government, but lo and behold, Thaksin's daughter Paetongtarn is the leading candidate in the upcoming election. The more things change, the more they stay the same in modern Thai politics. Greg and Ed discuss whether or not any of this really matters to expats in Thailand. We can't vote, so why bother going deep? The guys offer differing perspectives on the issue, leaving it up to each expat to decide on their own.  Don't forget that Patrons get the ad-free version of the show as well as swag and other perks.
