Jonathan and Caroline catch up for a Deadtober special, talking about the Grateful Dead film Fire On The Mountain, then spin some Dead live from Denmark.
Deadtober's first birthday continues with Grateful Dead's archivist, David Lemieux. Caroline joins as well to spin more records and tell more Dead tales. Image: Darren Stone
What a joy it is to bring back Deadtober for another year of fun. Jonathan and Richard kick things off with their old Deadtober pals Caroline and David, playing live Dead songs and Dead & Company cuts, and taking calls from more Deadheads sharing the love.
Deadtober lives on into November... and thus Deadvember was born. Caroline is back, introducing Sirius XM's very own Grateful Dead channel host, Rob. Everybody talks personal Dead stories, and we hear fresh cuts from Reckoning and Workingman's Dead.
The gang plays some special renditions of live Dead, and talk about their favorite moments from the group's live performances.
Caroline's back with another Deadtober guest (although it is now March). She hosts a phone interview with Dave, longtime Deadhead and manager of Blues Traveler. We also spin some tracks from The Day of the Dead compilation, Shakedown Street, and more.
Caroline joins us again interviewing Susana Millman, Grateful Dead photographer and wife to the Dead publicist Dennis McNally. She recently published her photographic memoir, "Alive with the Dead: Or A Fly on the Wall with a Camera". Hear her stories with the band, and the unforgettable moment as Jerry Garcia gave her away at her wedding.
We've got a special two-fold episode for you today. First, Jonathan welcomes two touring groups fresh from their performance at The Marine Room: Michael Musica and Eric and Erica. Eric and Erica share songs from their recent release, “The Way to Turn”, while Michael Musica chats with Jonathan about his own, “You Can If You Want To”. Then, Deep Cuts keeps on truckin' into Deadtober with Caroline and David, featuring a cool interview with The Grateful Dead historian and publicist, Dennis McNally.Image: Edmund Shea
Legendary political pundit and new Substack producer Ann Coulter drops by the pod to talk about the case against Trump, the future of the GOP, the immigration debate, and why she's a Deadhead.
For nine years, South Carolina officials struggled to identify “the boy in the woods,” a young man whose body had been discovered just south of Myrtle Beach in a fishing village called Murrells Inlet.Meanwhile, 1,200 miles away in Kansas City, Missouri, Frank McGonigle's family searched for him at Grateful Dead concerts and in the face of every long-haired hitchhiker they passed. Consumed by guilt for how they'd treated him, Frank's eight siblings slowly came to understand that — like Jerry Garcia sang — he's gone and nothin's gonna bring him back.Frank McGonigle was finally found — and identified as “the boy in the woods.”Four years later, the case still unsolved, Jim Cosgrove, a McGonigle family friend and investigative journalist, picked up the trail of Frank's cold case and began uncovering connections to a ruthless local crime boss and blunders by the threadbare sheriff's department. When his research began to stall, a chance meeting with the soft-hearted, straight-talking “energy reader” Carol Williams provided a metaphysical spark that reignited Jim's resolve. Although his work as a journalist trained him to be skeptical, Cosgrove found himself starting to become a believer when Carol provided details about Frank's murder that turned out to be freakishly accurate. In 2019, Cosgrove returned to Murrells Inlet with one of Frank's brothers to dredge up some old leads and settle Frank's case once and for all…RIPPLE: A Long Strange Search for a Killer-Jim Cosgrove
Brian Rashap is a Production Manager, Tour Manager, bass tech and bass player, currently handling PM and Tech duties for Phil Lesh, as well as playing bass in the Mother Hips. A musician since his formative years in Southern California, it was a last minute jam with the bass that forever changed Brian's focus from guitar to bass. Even though Brian was influenced by a wide range of artists as he came into his own as a player, the music of the Grateful Dead was always a constant staple, as was a popular band that blossomed onto the scene in the ‘90's, The Mother Hips. It's not lost on Brian how the mysteries of life's winding roads have now led him to be at the epicenter of the very groups he once listened to obsessively. Perhaps my favorite part of his story though, is a life transition that occurred several years ago, when the stars conspired to change his course, and set him squarely on his destiny. I caught-up with Brian via Skype from his home in Santa Rosa, CA, where he narrowly escaped the wildfires that ravaged so much of the area. EPISODE #646 THE MERRY PRANKSTERS, THE GRATEFUL DEAD AND KANGEN WATER Richard welcomes an artist who will discuss his many adventures while traveling with Ken Kesey and the Merry Pranksters in the mid 1960s. He'll also discuss a revolutionary water-ionization system that transforms regular tap water into pure, healthy, electrolytically-reduced and hydrogen-rich drinking water. Guest: Mike Lancaster was barely a teenager when he hooked up with the famous Merry Pranksters, a collection of comrades and followers of American author Ken Kesey in 1964. Kesey and the Merry Pranksters lived communally at Kesey's homes in California and Oregon, and are noted for the sociological significance of a lengthy road trip they took in the summer of 1964, traveling across the United States in a psychedelic painted school bus called Furthur, organizing parties and giving out LSD. In part two of our series on MK-Ultra, we discuss 'The Grateful Dead'. Who are known for their iconic Steal Your Face logo, their equally iconic music and their diehard fans, but their start is actually somewhat linked to MK-Ultra. From underground LSD King, Augustus Owsley Stanley III, to LSD drug studies at Stanford University, aka Project MK-Ultra. This might seem either surprising or unsurprising depending on how you view The Dead but the linkage is staggering.[FOLLOW US ON SOCIAL MEDIA]TWITTER: www.twitter.com/PodcastAfraidINSTAGRAM: www.instagram.com/PodcastAfraidYOUTUBE: https://tinyurl.com/3mwr54tbTIKTOK: https://www.tiktok.com/@podcastafraid[PATREON]Do you need more Even the Podcast is Afraid content, and would like to help support the show in the process? The Cosmic Country Tour may have canceled mid-tour for Daniel Donato during the beginnings of COVID-19, but he's still staying reflective during this time. Truth and art seem to be a constant theme in conversation as well as where expectations and patience collide as we're talking about Daniel's life-altering moments. The Grateful Dead, The Hobbit, and even U2 are discussed as quantitative and qualitative perspectives in art and the quantities of people that love and hate those same pieces.
Mountain Biking today seems almost too perfect. Expensive and lightweight carbon bikes with full suspension, slick paint jobs, perfect nature trails, big air, the list goes on. It wasn't always this way. Gary Fisher and Charlie Kelly paved the path with cheap $5 Klunker/Beater bikes, modding them and going down the mountain... hence the name "mountain bikes." It's a rocky journey but what they did revolutionized the Bike industry forever! If you enjoyed the podcast please share the episode with 2 friends!Check us out on Social media: https://linktr.ee/TRBBPTwitter: https://twitter.com/trbbpodInstagram: https://instagram.com/trbbpod

Since I am always flaming Trey for not being hip to songs that the other 7 billion people on the planet know, he was inspired to come up with a game that we will be coming back to every week! We attempted to stump each other by playing songs that were culturally relevant in our own communities that the others might have not been exposed to. We prefaced this by explaining our own musical upbringings and looked at how interesting it is that so much of our taste depends on what we were exposed to growing up and it led to a really eye opening conversation.
