Content warnings: brutal child death via crushing A hero falls today, but nobody has to like it... and the cast don't! They fucking hate it, actually. Thankfully, your delightful hosts are having a good time as we move into the endgame of IBO: a road trip across Canada, with wacky neighbor "Montag" showing up for hijinks, and the denizens of Gjallarhorn House moving to crash the party at every turn. Iron Blooded Orphans: one of the only things Mari Okada has written that is somehow not a sex farce on any level. "Anohana", "O Maidens in Your Savage Season", "The Anthem of the Heart".

This title could be a reference to a lot of things in this episode? Why did we abruptly not record for almost a month? What was the plot of Maboroshi, Mari Okada's new film on Netflix about? What did we think of the latest risky live action adaptation that was of a beloved story that was Netflix Avatar the Last Airbender? Also I thought this was an anime podcast with a focus on seasonal titles, where did that content go? Fortunately for you dear listener we have all the answers to those questions as well as maybe a few more, so thank you for your patience and now back to your regularly scheduled weirdness from us two nerds on the internet.  Power Rankings live @tjapod on instagram

Hey film buds,Quite the long title, isn't it? Well it fits because we have quite the episode for y'all. This week we continue to highlight the achievements of Women in Film by traveling across the Pacific to review and discuss Women in Anime. The popularity of Anime has grown significantly over the last decade or so, inspiring generations of fans from every background. Behind the camera, much like here in America, there is still somewhat of a limited range of women in above the line roles like Director and Producer. In this episode we're joined by Anime experts, Tori and Austin, from Third Impact Anime Podcast, to discuss two directors: Naoko Yamada and Mari Okada. Our first film is Naoko Yamada's A Silent Voice, based on a manga of the same name. The film tells the story of teenagers struggling with their feelings about themselves, each other, and the passage of time. It's an intimate, slice of life story that tries to condense a sprawling anime into a concise story. We talk about how well it works as an adaptation, the art style, and Yamada's work overall.Second, we're looking at Maquia: When the Promised Flower Blooms by Mari Okada. In a reversal from the grounded reality of A Silent Voice, Maquia tells a decades long story in a land of myth and magic, with a different Art Direction. We'll look at some of the similar themes in both stories, and whether original narratives or adaptations are more common in the Anime world.Beyond our reviews we also have a special announcement from Paul, What We're Watching, and more. We finally arrive at the most recent mainline Gundam TV series – 2015's global smash hit Iron-Blooded Orphans, created by the “Super Peace Busters” team of director Tatsuyuki Nagai and writer Mari Okada. Tackling the theme of child soldiers more directly than Gundam ever had before, Iron-Blooded Orphans is one of Gundam's darkest and most violent hours, but also one of its richest and most rewarding, a unique blend of daily life coming-of-age storytelling with hard-edged military fiction that leaves a huge impact. Season 1, which we're discussing today, follows the formation of the child-mercenary group Tekkadan – the eponymous Orphans with Iron in their Blood – and their journey to bring Martian independence activist Kudelia Aina Bernstein to Earth. It's a stupendous season of television with tons to talk about, and a pleasure to finally reach and discuss on Weekly Suit Gundam. The Casual Anime Podcast

Mari Okada's 2018 fantasy drama is an array strange timeskips, broken promises and tragic goodbyes. Although this film seems to have certain underlying messages about motherhood, sanctity of life and the compassionless ebb and flow of time, it is rarely consistent and would almost seem that narrative is at odds with itself. I guess it just goes to show that you never really stop being a parent no matter what happens.

For this episode of Manga Mavericks, the part of Sid will played by both Maxy Barnard and Bomber D Rufi, as Sid had this thing called “school” to focus on until he is finally finished with that and is ready to get back to slaving away at all the unfinished podcasts he still has to edit. Anyway, while Sid is off on his own ventures, Colton takes care of the show this week and covers the news with the help of Shonen Sunday fanatic, Bomber D Rufi (@kiirobon), as they talk about the usual new upcoming manga serials, licenses and live action films! Some highlights include a list of the biggest first printings from the biggest manga publishers within the last year, Viz Media licensing of Dragon Ball: That Time I Was Reincarnated as Yamcha, as well as some new info about Hiro Mashima’s upcoming new series! Afterwards, Maxy Barnard (@MaxyTheBee) from Friendship! Effort! Victory!, joins the show to discuss and dissect Takamagahara from Jyuuzou Kawai. Another prematurely ending Shonen Jump manga that ran simultaneously in English and Japanese via Viz Media before the era of Jump Starts! Colton and Maxy discuss how they feel about the series in relation to its many unexplored ideas and themes that were shadowed by both some less than stellar storytelling and various production issues behind the scenes. Next episode, we’ll be discussing our thoughts on Viz’s latest round of Jump Starts, as well two recent one shots from both Hiroshi Shiibashi (Nura: Rise of the Yokai Clan) and Mitsutoshi Shimabukuro (Toriko). Sid’s Note: As of this post I am hopefully finished with the bulk of my academic obligations. I had hoped to never miss an episode, but alas it was an unavoidable inevitability considering my workload this semester. Sadly, the last few weeks have been highly traumatic and stressful, but hopefully this ordeal is all over with and I can return to the podcast unburdened. I must extend a huge thanks to the wonderful Maxy Barnard and Bomber D Rufi for covering for me this week. They are always a delight to listen to, and I’m looking forward to personally talking with them again in future shows. I’m also very grateful to Colton for creating this week’s thumbnail and writing up this post and the podcast breakdown, tasks I normally do but simply did not have time for this week. You guys are great friends and I’m very thankful this podcast has allowed me to meet all of you. I’m looking forward to continuing doing more projects with you all! And on the subject of all those unedited episodes of Manga Mavericks @ Movies…well, I can’t concretely confirm that they’ll be coming closely, but MAYbe. ;) PODCAST BREAKDOWN: 0:00 - Intro 04:20 - Monthly Bookscan March List 07:46 - Biggest 1st Printing from the Big 3 Publishers 24:04 - Chiho Saito previews new manga 25:16 - Orange's Ichigo Takano Launches New Manga on April 25 26:38 - Shinobu Ohtaka launches new manga in Weekly Shonen Magazine 31:05 - Hiroshi Fukuda launches new manga on April 25th 35:27 - Akame ga Kill artist to launch new series 36:21 - Satoshi Mizukami launches 'Planet With' Anime/Manga 42:22 - Updates on Hiro Mashima’s New Series 47:26 - Bozebeats ends in Issue 20 of Shonen Jump 52:38 - Juni Taisen to end in 4th volume 56:02 - Everyone's Getting Married Manga Ends on May 8 56:33 - D.N.Angel Manga Annoucned to Return 1:01:23 - Welcome to the Ballroom continues its hiatus 1:04:53 - Naruto gets new 3-novel book series 1:06:39 - Listing for After The Rain from Vertical on Amazon 1:07:40 - Vertical’s Anime Boston Licenses 1:11:27 - Yen Press Anime Boston Licenses 1:18:27 - Viz Media Anime Boston Licenses 1:27:08 - J-Novel Club licenses Mari Okada’s autobiography 1:27:38 - Dark Horse Comics to release Eromanga-sensei 1:29:12 - Dark Horse Licenses Danganronpa 2: Ultimate Luck and Hope and Despair Manga 1:29:34 - Udon to Launch Otherwordly Izakaya Nobu Manga in September 2018 1:30:33 - One Peace Books Licenses Hinamatsuri and others 1:33:12 - Nisekoi Live Action Movie coming this December 1:35:12 - Kingdom gets Live Action Movie 1:36:48 - Takamagahara Discussion /w Maxy Barnard 2:43:35 - Wrap Up Enjoy the show, and follow us on twitter at @manga_mavericks, on tumblr at mangamavericks.tumblr.com, and on our Youtube channel!
