Director Naoko Yamada (A Silent Voice; K-On) has released a new film - an original story about a girl who can see and feel a person's color joining a band with a dropout and an aspiring medical student in preparation for an upcoming school festival. The Colors Within is an exploration of both the internal struggles of hiding secrets and the joys of creating music as an act of community and worship; all utilizing color and light as a storytelling device. Show Host, Jonathan "Joestar" Beltran, and his guest, Jon, talk about the movie's nuances, themes, and details and feature interview snippets featuring Yamada-san herself. Part 6 of our Kyoto Vacation continues with Sound! Euphonium 2, the aptly titled second season of Kyoto Animation's beloved adaptation of Takeda Ayano's novels. This batch of episodes picks up right where the first left off, with the students of the Kitauji High Concert Band working hard to make it to Nationals, but this time working through a lot more interpersonal drama. Where the first season focused on protagonist Kumiko's relationship with trumpet prodigy Reina, Season 2 follows Kumiko's encounters with estranged oboe and flute players Mizore and Nozomi, and the fraught journey of the mysterious third-year Euphonium player Asuka. It's another great set of episodes, and while Jonathan was very slightly less impressed than Sean, his concert band veteran brother Thomas writes in with a sternly-worded letter to set him straight. Enjoy, and come back next week for our review of the Sound! We are back for Part 5 of our Kyoto Vacation, entitled “Kyoto Animation's Splendid Isolation,” and today we're discussing the next series made by the ladies behind K-ON!, 2013's Tamako Market! An entirely original creation by Naoko Yamada and Reiko Yoshida, Tamako Market is a strange, singular, and sweet slice-of-life series about the daughter of a mochi-shop owner and the many oddballs she encounters in daily life, including a talking bird from a mysterious island kingdom named Dera. Sean and Jonathan are split on just how effective the TV show itself is – Sean loves it, while Jonathan found it a little hit-or-miss – but we are in complete agreement about the 2014 film follow-up, Tamako Love Story, which adopts a slightly different tone and focus and delivers a true directorial tour-de-force from Naoko Yamada. It's one of the best things we've watched this season, and that's saying something. Enjoy, and come back next week for our review of 2013's Beyond the Boundary and its feature film sequel, I'll Be Here! Time Chart:Theme Song: 0:00:00 – 0:01:30 Tamako Market Review: 0:01:30 – 1:43:36Eyecatch Break: 1:43:36 – 1:44:14Tamako Love Story Review: 1:44:14 – 3:07:45End Theme: 3:07:45 – 3:08:46 Support the show at Ko-fi ☕️ https://ko-fi.com/weeklystuffRead the book 200 Reviews by Jonathan R. Hey film buds,Quite the long title, isn't it? Well it fits because we have quite the episode for y'all. This week we continue to highlight the achievements of Women in Film by traveling across the Pacific to review and discuss Women in Anime. The popularity of Anime has grown significantly over the last decade or so, inspiring generations of fans from every background. Behind the camera, much like here in America, there is still somewhat of a limited range of women in above the line roles like Director and Producer. In this episode we're joined by Anime experts, Tori and Austin, from Third Impact Anime Podcast, to discuss two directors: Naoko Yamada and Mari Okada. Our first film is Naoko Yamada's A Silent Voice, based on a manga of the same name. The film tells the story of teenagers struggling with their feelings about themselves, each other, and the passage of time. It's an intimate, slice of life story that tries to condense a sprawling anime into a concise story. We talk about how well it works as an adaptation, the art style, and Yamada's work overall.Second, we're looking at Maquia: When the Promised Flower Blooms by Mari Okada. In a reversal from the grounded reality of A Silent Voice, Maquia tells a decades long story in a land of myth and magic, with a different Art Direction. We'll look at some of the similar themes in both stories, and whether original narratives or adaptations are more common in the Anime world.Beyond our reviews we also have a special announcement from Paul, What We're Watching, and more. Heike Monogatari kind of came out of nowhere and already there's so much to unpack from a visual perspective. In this episode, I attempt to break down this anime's approach to visual storytelling by going through the work of the various storyboard aritsts & episodes directors that featured on Episodes 1-4. How does it's approach fit with the epic's themes? How does Naoko Yamada's style as a director influence the anime's aesthetic? All this and more on this week's edition of Get In The Mecha. It is currently sad boi hours, all thanks to bugman. This week's film is the japanese animated drama A Silent Voice, directed by Naoko Yamada. There's a lot of depression talk and insightfulness that's somewhat rare for the show, so if you're expecting more cuck talk then sorry, maybe next time. Recommendations for this week include the bands Leet Street Boys, Good Charlotte, Tricot, and Fleet Foxes. Also check out Heavysaurios, that's the dinosaur band Darkbug was talking about. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/murdockmediare/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/murdockmediare/support

Previously on the show, I have managed to cover some rather niche topics, namely space and aspect ratios. However, in this session I wanted to take it a bit further by discussing camera lenses. The lens is our way into a scene; the lens no matter how distorted works as our eyes into the film and as a result influence how we interpret space and time itself. In this episode, I discuss what the purpose of lenses are and then proceed to break down the visual language of Kyoto Animation's Naoko Yamada & how she manages to imbue her films with meaning from lenses alone. Coming back from a suicide attempt, Shoyo makes an awkward attempt to reconnect and reconcile with Shoko, but are either of them prepared for the strong emotions that this reunion will provoke and the consequences that it will have for their friends and their families?

Hey everybody! Welcome to episode 79 of the Not Joanna Eggs podcast: this week, Robbie and Tracy review the 2016 Japanese anime film, A Silent Voice, directed by Naoko Yamada. A beautifully nuanced story of forgiveness, becoming a better person and a statement against bullying. They even have a character who looks identical to Steven Universe only Japanese, so you know it's deliberate. We loved this film and hope you dig this review! Euphonium universe focusing on the relationship between band members Nozomi and Mizore. We start off by discussing our thoughts on the movie through the lens of our experience (or lack thereof) with the original show. We then move on to talk about the animation and art style before we move on to rave about the incredible soundtrack. Afterwards, we move onto a spoiler-filled discussion of our favorite characters, both old and new, as well as Yata’s surprising experience with receiving hard-boiled eggs from his students.
