During the closing months of World War II, two military giants locked in a death embrace of cultural differences and diplomatic intransigence. While developing history's deadliest weapon and weighing an invasion that would have dwarfed D-Day, the US called for the “unconditional surrender” of Japan. The Japanese Empire responded with a last-ditch plan termed Ketsu-Go, which called for the suicidal resistance of every able-bodied man and woman in “The Decisive Battle” for the homeland. In 140 Days to Hiroshima (Diversion Books, 2020), historian David Dean Barrett captures war-room drama on both sides of the conflict. Here are the secret strategy sessions, fierce debates, looming assassinations, and planned invasions that resulted in Armageddon on August 6, 1945. Barrett then examines the next nine chaotic days as the Japanese government struggled to respond to the reality of nuclear war. Learn more about your ad choices. Today's Topics: 1) Gospel - LK 13:31-35 - Some Pharisees came to Jesus and said, “Go away, leave this area because Herod wants to kill You.” He replied, “Go and tell that fox, ‘Behold, I cast out demons and I perform healings today and tomorrow, and on the third day I accomplish my purpose. Yet I must continue on My way today, tomorrow, and the following day, for it is impossible that a prophet should die outside of Jerusalem.' “Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how many times I yearned to gather your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, but you were unwilling! Behold, your house will be abandoned. But I tell you, you will not see Me until the time comes when you say, Blessed is He Who comes in the Name of the Lord.” Bishop Sheen quote of the day 2, 3) Homosexual relations and the decisive battle for marriage and family https://www.tfp.org/homosexual-relations-and-the-decisive-battle-for-marriage-and-family/?PKG=TFPE3466 4) The Vatican's mascot designer for the 2025 Jubilee Year previously designed devil-decorated "sex toys" https://gloria.tv/post/47ANqtC7EQjpCEeAdPZXxSDVt

Show Notes This week on MSB, it's Victory Gundam episode 20 'Eve of the Decisive Battle' and we're here to talk newtypes, plot armor, feisty ladies and the knights who love them, and the name of Zanscare's 'Amalthea' battleship. Please listen to it! Mobile Suit Breakdown is written, recorded, and produced within Lenapehoking, the ancestral and unceded homeland of the Lenape, or Delaware, people. Before European settlers forced them to move west, the Lenape lived in New York City, New Jersey, and portions of New York State, Pennsylvania, Delaware, and Connecticut. Lenapehoking is still the homeland of the Lenape diaspora, which includes communities living in Oklahoma, Wisconsin, and Ontario. You can learn more about Lenapehoking, the Lenape people, and ongoing efforts to honor the relationship between the land and indigenous peoples by visiting the websites of the Delaware Tribe and the Manhattan-based Lenape Center. SW0130 Martial Matters 7: Army Uses Duplicity, Settlers to Subdue Seminole When Decisive Battle Fails After the Battles of Okeechobee and Loxahatchee, the Seminole changed their strategy to avoid any confrontations that could potentially cause mass removal to Oklahoma Territory. In response, the U.S. Army adapted as well, and engaged non-kinetic means in an attempt to subdue Seminole in Florida.  Jesse Marshall returns to discuss how the Army employed parlay, bribery, cheating, and duplicity in its attempts to force the Seminole to capitulate. In the end, the Army gave up and left the task to the well-regulated militia -- often homesteaders with a stake on "free" land that they defended with a musket or rifle. This was codified in the Armed Occupation Act of 1842.    Courtesy Illustration by Adam Hook       The U.S. Army employed duplicity when it detained Osceola, who was carrying of a white flag to parlay. It also imported bloodhounds from Cuba in an attempt to sniff out the Seminole. It failed but not before public opinion turned on the service for using the dogs in this fashion. Popular illustrations of the time ridiculed the bloodhound use.              Host Patrick Swan is a board member with the Seminole Wars Foundation. SW0129 Martial Matters 6: Army Pursuit of Decisive Battle Proves Futile In the Second Seminole War, Army commanders had an expectation that if they could just fix the Seminole in battle, they could settle the conflict right then and there. The Seminole, however, had other ideas and greatly frustrated Army leaders in this endeavor. Considering this, what was it in the U.S. Army's past that gave these leaders the idea that they had the capability for waging and winning one decisive battle to end a war.   Jesse Marshall returns to provide the context and history.  Withlacoochee Abyss by Jackson Walker   Host Patrick Swan is a board member with the Seminole Wars Foundation. How are wars won in the modern era? As Ukraine's counteroffensive reports significant gains, especially in its Kharkiv offensive, we look at the concept of a decisive battle, and whether it is possible in the modern era - or what a decisive battle might look like if so. Recorded in two parts, and covering past conflicts from the modern era including the Vietnam War, the First Gulf War and the 2003 Invasion of Iraq, and the recent Nagorno-Karabakh War, Intelligence Fusion analysts Matt Pratten, Alex Smith and Max Taylor explore the ideas of and differences between a tactical and strategic victory, and how these ideas will relate to the Russia-Ukraine war, particularly with regard to the purported Kherson offensive in the south of the country, and the subsequent tactical victories being reported by the Ukrainian armed forces in the Kharkiv offensive in the north in recent days. What is a decisive battle? Is a military victory won through a single battle or through attrition? And is a strategic victory now more important than any at the tactical level?Listen to the full episode of The Roundtable now.—NB: This podcast was recorded in two parts: on 5th September 2022, before the Kharkiv offensive began, and then on 13th September 2022, the day of release, to give as accurate and up-to-date information as possible.—Other content you might be interested in:Russia-Ukraine video briefing, 11th August 2022: Does Russia have the upper hand? - https://hubs.ly/Q01m917B0 The Roundtable podcast: How is conflict changing? - https://hubs.ly/Q01m91ct0 Pipeline politics: Russia's instruments of power compared to Europe - https://hubs.ly/Q01m914S0 Hosted on Acast. Dr. Dan Schneider is an Adjunct Professor of Theology at Franciscan University of Steubenville. Dan is a former amateur boxer, U.S. Army helicopter pilot and Gulf War veteran who teaches with both humor and practical experience. He has a Ph.D. in Biblical Studies from Liverpool Hope University, England. Dan has also worked for many years in the Catholic apostolate of deliverance and exorcism both at the diocesan level and as a founding member of Liber Christo, a movement in conjunction with Fr. Chad Ripperger, SMD which provides tools and resources for priests and laity working in the apostolate of exorcism. As a former attack helicopter pilot who has seen combat, Dan brings an insight into the spiritual battle we are facing today. This year, Pentecost falls on the day before the anniversary of D-Day. We are facing our own "Spiritual D-Day" as we enter into the June of all Junes, as we see SCOTUS removing their sanction on abortion and the bishops inaugurating a three year "Eucharistic Revival." Could Satan be more angry right now? We are already seeing signs of demons manifesting to incite rage and division, not unlike 2020. Victory is coming, but we must all enlist and fight. It may be a bit of hell before we break through to a glorious era of peace ... much like June 6, 1944. --------------------------------- VIDEO: Apparitions in Akita, Japan -https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ZyeGQJLs9A --------------------------------- Help support this podcast by becoming a US Grace Force Patron here: https://www.patreon.com/user?u=25398590 --------------------------------- Join our US Grace Force Facebook group: https://usgraceforce.com/ --------------------------------- Battle Ready Emergency Preparedness Course: Be prepared to Care for and Protect your Family in times of Natural Disasters, Emergencies, Civil Unrest, Economic Collapse, and More - All in Line with Catholic Church Teaching. Today's Broadcast is C1E60, for Theme Thursday, December 23rd, 2021 - our final episode of our very non-standard two-year long “Season 4”. So it is fitting that we'd end such a wildly non-standard season - filled with primarily wildly non-standard content already - with such a dramatically non-standard Channel 1 episode. Today's episode abandons the customary Channel 1 “great big music block” mixtape format for a modified take on the original W.A.R.T. Radio format, featuring Trey Johnson of Nintendomain / W.A.R.T. Radio and St. John. Today's episode is also a “Lost Level”, as it was originally intended to be a Channel F bonus “F-isode” to supplement “C1E40 - Listener Picks - vol. 1” from December 2018, and was intended to release right after it, in a nearly identical presentation to what you receive today. As such, today's broadcast shall be “Listener Picks - vol. 2”. All music, other than the background music for the speaking portions was curated by listeners of the show, and are the roughly 60 remaining unused tracks from the pool of roughly 100 that were offered up for C1E40 in 2018, of which only 40 were used.    p.s. We apologize for the uncharacteristically poor audio quality on St. John's speaking voice. Details available upon request, but the short version is that John had technical difficulties on his end of the recording with "the good mic", but fortunately, we had a lower-quality backup recording on Trey's end over Zoom using St. John's built-in laptop mic. The sound quality is diminished, but the content is still preserved.     Note: All Speaking Portions originally produced in December 2021 by St. John     01: Intro     Timestamps: 00:00:00 - 00:05:18  Runtime: 05:18  Emceed by: Trey and St. John     02: Phillip Vaughn Music Block     Timestamps (Including Introduction): 00:05:18 - The lessons extracted have covered advanced technology and unmanned platforms, proxy dynamics, the ongoing relevance of armor, and more. But some of the most important lessons have received much less attention. They center around the increasingly unavoidable importance of combat in cities and are drawn principally from the battle for the city of Shusha—a fight that arguably decided the outcome of the war. Listen as John Spencer, chair of urban warfare studies at MWI, explains why.

The Pleven Panorama transports visitors through time, but not space. The huge, hand-painted panorama features the decisive battles of the Russian-Turkish War of 1877–78, fought at this exact spot, which led to Bulgaria’s Liberation. The landscape of Pleven, Bulgaria depicted is exactly what you see outside the building, making it seem like you’re witnessing the battle on an observation point. Bogomil Stoev is a historian at the Pleven Panorama, which opened in 1977. The opening was timed to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Ottoman Empire’s surrender following the battles and the siege of Pleven. The building itself is etched with the story of the siege and the battles, and because the landscape is filled with the remains of the combattants, this was the only structure allowed to be built on the spot. In this episode, Stoev describes how the creators of the Pleven Panorama learned from previous panoramas, how the museum contextualizes the history of Bulgaria’s Liberation, and how this museum has become a symbol of the city of Pleven. EP 91: Godzilla Movies Review

Nerd Tutorial Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 13, 2021 137:46

Topic: Godzilla Movies Review   This week, we watched a giant Lizard smash a building… lots of buildings in fact.  And lots of Lizards too.  I think a few had wings even… so many monsters, so little time.  But a fun time at that, lots of it!  And both mom and me would agree that they’re a lot of fun.  So we’re back with two American Godzilla, and the most recent live action Godzilla from Japan.   Godzilla (2014) Directed by: Gareth Edwards Starring: Aaron Taylor-Johnson as U.S. Navy EOD LT Ford Brody Ken Watanabe as Dr. Ishirō Serizawa Elizabeth Olsen as Elle Brody Juliette Binoche as Sandra Brody Sally Hawkins as Dr. Vivienne Graham David Strathairn as Admiral William Stenz Bryan Cranston as Joe Brody Monsters: Godzilla Muto (Male) Muto (Female) This movie felt like a proper disaster movie, but at times, it doesn’t feel like a movie, more like we were following a narrative and series of unfortunate events. Almost like a found footage piece. Depictions of Japan, of the fictional city Janjira, were very comical. Rather than looking like a suburb of Japan, it looks like an American suburb with Japanese aesthetics. They even driver cars on the left side of the car, which is typical of America.  While Aaron Taylor-Johnson may be a decent actor, he felt very disposable in the film. At the time of Casting, Elizabeth Olsen hadn’t been cast as the Scarlet Witch in the MCU yet, but her role felt fairly disposable as well. Looking at the role now, she’s only memorable because this was what she was in prior to the Marvel movies. Ken Watanabe always adds gravitas to a film he’s in, especially in this case of Godzilla. Godzilla is talked about and seen sporadically in the film, but major brunt of destruction is from the Muto monsters. Godzilla has a proper fight at the end of the movie. While critics praised the tone and direction, many criticized the under developed characters, lack of thematic depth, turning Godzilla into a secondary character, and insufficient screen time for the title character. Japanese critics liked the film, but felt the same way. Toho  liked the film so much, they decided to reboot the series with Shin Godzilla.     Godzilla: King of Monsters (2019) Directed by: Michael Dougherty Starring: Kyle Chandler as Dr. Mark Russell Vera Farmiga as Dr. Emma Russell Millie Bobby Brown as Madison Russell Bradley Whitford as Dr. Rick Stanton Sally Hawkins as Dr. Vivienne Graham Charles Dance as Alan Jonah Thomas Middleditch as Sam Coleman Aisha Hinds as Colonel Diane Foster O'Shea Jackson Jr. as Jackson Barnes David Strathairn as Admiral William Stenz Ken Watanabe as Dr. Ishirō Serizawa Zhang Ziyi as Dr. Ilene Chen Monsters: Godzilla Mothra Rodan King Ghidorah And many more, including King Kong Unlike the 2014 Film, this one felt more like a Movie than the last. Perhaps it’s the bigger sets and more sightings of Godzilla. It was nice to see some of the cast from the 2014 Godzilla return. It’s a shame Ken Watanabe’s character was killed as the film leave the possibility of a third Godzilla movie in the near future. Nice to see Bradley Whitford in work. American Critics were not impressed by the film, remarking that the script was ‘laughable’, the monster battles were either too numerous or boring, and that the film was paper thin with no real drama.     Shin Godzilla Directed by: Hideaki Anno and Shinji Higuchi Starring: Hiroki Hasegawa as Rando Yaguchi, Deputy Chief Cabinet Secretary. Yutaka Takenouchi as Hideki Akasaka, Aide to Prime Minister. Satomi Ishihara as Kayoco Anne Patterson, Special Envoy for the President of the United States. Film used the 2011 Tohoku Earthquake/Tsunami & Fukushima Daiichi nuclear Disaster as inspiration. Film is considered political, mostly in the sense that it’s a scathing depiction of Japanese bureaucracy and its politicians. Often seen as trying to manage the in pending fall out, rather than trying to manage the actual situation, and tied up in various meetings. Did very well in Japan, winning 7 Japanese Academy Prize, including Picture of the Year and Director of the Year. Laughed at multiple points from hearing the ‘Decisive Battle’ illusions being made during the planning phases. The song is from Evangelion (1995) anime, directed and created by Hideki Anno, is used at multiple points throughout the film. Can see lots of allusions to Evangelion, though as a Evangelion fan, I might be more hyper aware than most.

The battle of Naseby decided the English Civil War in that by the day's end, King Charles I no longer had an effective field army. The two cavalry displays that define the fighting are a masterclass, one in battlefield control, and one in a lack of control. The brilliant command of Oliver Cromwell is on full display here while the Cavaliers show off their brash unruliness very…cavalierly! (I'm sorry it's the only bad joke I promise)The aftermath of the battle in human costs was relatively small compared to the other actions we have covered, but the King's baggage train's seizure was catastrophic for Charles. Added with the loss of his army, events proved too great for Charles to overcome. His surrender and eventual execution dramatically changed the world political scene, and seeds were planted all over the world for the end of monarchy. Enjoy! Main source - Naseby 1645 by Martin Marx Evans Artwork - King Charles I and Prince Rupert before the Battle of Naseby 14th June 1645 during the English Civil War - unknown author Music - Americana Aspiring - Kevin McLeod

An overall feeling that we are meant to take these presenters as podcasters of their own merit pervades. Some self-doubt and impostor syndrome emerges once solid evidence of an actual damn listener with positive feedback is found. Our hosts swell gratitude like Shinji hearing about someone's dead mother. This being an "episode plugcast", the proverbial thousand words are used to describe an episode of beautiful pictures in frugally efficient animation. Our fellas really dig deep trying to get at the souls of the protagonists, and it must be said, get damn wistful at the romance of the ending. It is agreed in whispers that train stations are romantic places. Honest and true; thank you guys. Bankruptcy, famine in the countryside, and a starving army were just some of the crises facing Louis XIV in 1709. Eight years into the War of the Spanish Succession, the allied armies led by the Duke of Marlborough, had also managed to breach the French defences on the Flanders frontier. Threatened with the prospect of invasion, Marshal Villars and his French forces met Marlborough in the field resulting in the climactic Battle of Malplaquet, halting the allied advance and changing the course of the war. Or so this is how the battle if often remembered. Darryl Dee is not so sure. His research questions the idea that the Battle of Malplaquet, and battles in general, can ever be so decisive. Thapsus was a rare battle in that it showed Caesar not as the consummate warlord but as a general that at times had no control over his own army. The action was joined after one of his wings charged the enemy of their own volition and unable to call his men back, Caesar was forced to order an all-out attack. Again at the end of the battle, we see another instance of Caesar having no power over his men when the enemy army collapsed a large number attempted to surrender. In many cases, the Caesarian soldiers ignored the attempted surrender and proceeded to slaughter the defenseless victims. In one case the blood rush was such that a group of Caesar’s officers was mistaken for the enemy and butchered before the confusion could be put to rights. Between Thapsus and Munda, the final battles of the Civil War were not Caesar the General’s most exceptional performances. Eddie Inzauto is joined by Jason Fanelli, Dan Crabtree, Anthony LaBella, and Mike Murphy on Episode 33 of the Versus Node Podcast to sing the praises -- and occasionally berate -- the most underrated games released during the seventh generation of gaming history. Anything from November 22, 2005 through today and released on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, or Nintendo Wii was fair game, from titles with weak sales numbers, to critical flops, to those games it seemed like nobody had even heard about. Listen and find out which games the GamerNode staff felt deserved far more recognition than they received as we continue the march toward the releases of the PS4 and Xbox One.---------------------------------------Versus Node theme, "Dungeon" by Koji Kondo for Nintendo's The Legend of Zelda, 1987, remixed by Brian Schulman and Charles Kantz, 2010.
