Court of Appeals Rules For Transgenderism in Ohio The 6th US Circuit Court of Appeals ruled yesterday against students attending Ohio state schools who refuse to accept the preferred gender of boys trying to turn themselves into girls, and vice versa. The court noted that “the First Amendment's guarantee is subject to some restrictions for public school students ‘in light of the special characteristics of the school environment.'” And, “free speech rules for schoolchildren must “take into account consideration of the sensibilities of . . . fellow students,” including those who wish to change themselves into some other gender. The court based their decision on their conclusion that students who are attempting to transgender themselves would find “misgendering humiliating or offensive.” Christian Lawmaker Kidnapped in Nigeria Prominent Christian lawmaker Joan Onyemaech was kidnapped while at a Bible study at her local church in Asaba, Nigeria last Tuesday. The gunmen killed two others during the kidnapping. Inflation has been running at 34% this year. The nation has been under Muslim presidential rule since 2015. Nigeria retains the highest inflation rate in the world, with the exception of Venezuela, Zimbabwe, Sudan, and Argentina. Tensions Rise Between Iran and Israel In other international news, tensions between Iran and Israel remain high, after the death of Hamas political chief Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran last week. This followed a missile attack on Golan Heights, where 12 children and teenagers were killed. Over the weekend, the US state department issued advisement that all US citizens leave Lebanon due to the “risk of armed conflict.” Japanese Stock Market Index Falls The Japanese Stock Market Index lost 12.4% value on Monday — the largest percentage drop since the black Monday crash of 1987, about 37 years ago. The Magnificent 7 stock index is down 17.2% in an extremely volatile market, since July 9th. NVIDIA has lost 24% of its market cap, or almost one trillion dollars in less than a month. Romans 1 reminds us that “For this reason God gave them up to vile passions. For even their [i]women exchanged the natural use for what is against nature. 27 Likewise also the [j]men, leaving the natural use of the [k]woman, burned in their lust for one another, men with men committing what is shameful, and receiving in themselves the penalty of their error which was due.” Newsweek Editorialist Calls New GOP Platform a Win for LGBT Newsweek magazine editorialist Brad Polumbo is calling the new GOP platform “a massive win for LGBT Americans.” Polumbo referred to the recent change as the single biggest objective of gay Republicans. . . achieved,” with “only a minor outcry in niche socially conservative circles.” Deadpool and Wolverine Becomes Most Popular R-rated Movie Another downward shift in the mass culture appeared over the weekend. The Hollywood summer blockbuster Deadpool and Wolverine, knocked out The Passion of the Christ as the most popular R-rated movie of all time. The film supports abortion, glorifies vengeful mass killings, and includes 150 profanities, and makes light of or supports every form of sexual sin — including bestiality, homosexuality, and pedophilia. Chinese Man Saves Hundreds of Lives in China And. . .Here is the common grace of God at work in China. He's the Angel of Nanjing, and he makes it his job to rescue people attempting suicide at the iconic Yangtze Bridge. Over 23 years, Mr. Chen Si has saved 469 people from jumping off the bridge, and taking their own lives. Mr. Chen holds up a heart-shaped sign that reads: “Nothing is impossible. When God closes a door, he opens up a window.” , . and dons a coat that reads: “Cherish life everyday.” He patrols the bridge ten times a day on his motor scooter. His journey to defending life started in 2000, when he came across a desperate-looking girl about to jump He bought her lunch, chatted with her for a while, and then paid her way back to her home. That's when he said he realized these people could be saved. A documentary on the Angel of Nanjing is available on Amazon. Mr Chen says in the documentary quote “I understand these people I know they are tired of living here. They've had difficulties. They have no one to help. They carry this burden by themselves. There's a saying in China, ‘The prosperity of a nation is everyone's responsibility'. How can we avoid this responsibility? Proverbs 24:11 speaks to this. “Deliver those who are drawn toward death, And hold back those stumbling to the slaughter.” And that's The World View in 5 Minutes on this Tuesday, August 6th, in the year of our Lord 2024. Let's face it, we're all a little bit self-involved. It's not just that we spend a lot of time thinking about ourselves. There's another layer to it: we spend a lot of time thinking about what other people think about us. We take pains to present ourselves in the best possible light; we fret over whether we made a good impression; and we do our best to shape and manage our reputations. It's honestly hard to imagine not doing any of this—seeing ourselves from the outside can feel like pure reflex. But what are the deeper origins of this tendency? When does it arise in childhood? What are the underpinnings and consequences of reputational thinking? My guests today are Dr. Mika Asaba, a postdoc in the Psychology Department at Yale University, and Dr. Hyo Gweon, Associate Professor of Psychology at Stanford University. Together, Mika and Hyo recently published a paper about reputational thinking in young children. In this conversation, we talk about the broader context of this research and lay out some concepts central to it, like “self-presentational behavior" and "theory of mind." We walk through four experiments in which 3- and 4-year-old children showed a clear interest in their reputations. They strategically communicated to certain people—or about certain events—to make sure they came across well. We then consider the provocative possibility that humans are especially motivated to think about others' minds when those other minds are thinking about us. We discuss whether similar reputation-related behaviors might be present in other species, and how reputational thinking might vary across cultures. Finally, we touch on a few ways Hyo and Mika are hoping to extend this work into new terrain. Honestly I got excited about this paper just by reading the first few sentences of the abstract. It takes on such an obviously big and rich and fascinating research question. That basic reflex—to see ourselves through the eyes of others—feels so elemental and so critical to understanding the human mind. In October 1967 Nigerian federal troops slaughtered hundreds of innocent civilians in the town of Asaba. Elizabeth Bird, anthropologist and professor emerita at the University of South Florida, argues that the Asaba Massacre wasn't just one of the many atrocities committed during the Nigerian Civil War. It was a pivotal event that prolonged a conflict that claimed over a million lives. What were the causes of the Asaba Massacre? How did it prolong the war? How did it affect the lives of the people of Asaba and how it has been remembered? Liz Bird, co-author with Fraser Ottanelli of The Asaba Massacre: Trauma, Memory, and the Nigerian Civil War, provides answers to these questions.

This is a very special bonus episode that we put little to no effort into creating! At Animazement 2018, Tobias and I attended the "100 Years of Anime" panel hosted by Producer Masuo Ueda, animator Kazushige Yusa, director Akitaro Daichi, and curator of the Tokyo Anime Center, Asaba-san (I couldn't make out his full name). They discuss the most influential anime on their life and work, how anime has changed over the years, their struggles and successes as creators, how anime works in the west, and then took some audience questions at the end. It was incredibly fascinating and the whole panel was just hilarious. Sorry for the audio quality being garbage, this was recorded on my phone afterall. So sorry about that! Here's the video Ueda showed before the panel. When asked about what she can make better in radio land, Gabriella Daniels, the program manager of Hot FM Asaba, replies, "It is important that aspiring presenters or those already on air, to know that your job is not only for the fun of it. Yeah, your job is real fun when you're on air, but it is not really about that. You should be able to know that this is a mission you have, knowing that radio is a powerful tool to shape the future of a society, the future of a nation, and that's because whatever people hear on radio, whether correct or not, they believe it. It registers somewhere in their subconscious. That means that whatever we say on air, as presenters behind radio, is sensitive, and we must not play or mull over anything we say carelessly. I feel there should be a body to regulate the kind of things OPAs say on air. NBC, for example, is just for music. Nothing exists regulating what OAPs say on air, the suggestions they make and the rest..." Now you see why you should tune in to this episode of Behind Radio? You may never hear this on any radio.
