It was such a joy to have my good friend, Thomas Easley, on the show. For some reason, the herb he chose to discuss – blue vervain – surprised me (perhaps because it hit so close to home?), but his insights about it were both thoughtful and expansive. He shared about the type of person who tends to really benefit from vervain, the best time of day to take it, some lesser-known ways of working with it, and so much more!Blue vervain is perhaps best known for its gift of helping wind you down, and so it's often included in blends for relaxation and sleep. In this episode, Thomas shared his version of a sleep tincture blend featuring blue vervain, which he calls GTFTS (I'll let you guess what that acronym stands for!). Click here for your beautifully-illustrated recipe card for GTFTS.By the end of this episode, you'll know:► Specific indications for blue vervain - and whether you're the type of person who could benefit from keeping a bottle of it on your desk (and actually taking it!)► Why it's important to experience an herb (in multiple ways and during different circumstances) to determine whether it's the right herb for you► Three little-known uses for blue vervain► and so many other insights about this lovely relaxing herb….For those of you who don't know him, Thomas Easley is a registered herbalist with the American Herbalist Guild, a clinical herbalist, and the founder of the Eclectic School of Herbal Medicine. With a passion for herbal medicine ignited in 1996, Thomas has dedicated his life to helping others through unique approaches that integrate traditional western herbalism, clinical nutrition, and modern medical sciences. Thomas is co-author of The Modern Herbal Dispensatory: A Medicine-Making Guide and Modern Herbal Medicine. He firmly believes in the power of herbal medicine to transform lives and promote vibrant health. His approach emphasizes the importance of food as medicine and incorporates tailored diets, stress reduction techniques, nutrition supplements, and exercise to help clients achieve their health goals. I hope this conversation with Thomas brings you as much insight (and maybe a few laughs) as it brought me. I can't wait to hear what resonates most with you from this conversation—blue vervain might surprise you, too.----Get full show notes and more information at: herbswithrosaleepodcast.comFor more behind-the-scenes of this podcast, follow @rosaleedelaforet on Instagram! The secret to using herbs successfully begins with knowing who YOU are. The Eclectic School of Herbal Medicine (ESHM) is excited to announce a fundraiser for their student-led Free Herbal Clinic!  After 10 years of operation, client needs have expanded beyond their budget, and they need your help to keep the free clinic thriving!  With the the support of the herbal community, they will continue to offer comprehensive herbal care for all. LEARN MORE & DONATE THE GOAL Their fundraiser goal is to raise $10,000, which will cover the costs of the first round of herbal formulas for our free clinic clients for one year and help provide a living wage for their dedicated apothecary worker, who makes medicines and fills formulas onsite in Lowgap, NC. The free clinic supports countless people each year, but it's costly to run. Despite the income from Eclectica Botanica sales, their current funding source for the free clinic, they're not coming close to breaking even. This fundraiser is crucial for them to sustain and expand their services. HOW YOU CAN HELP Your support can make a significant difference! They have an array of items generously donated by fellow herbalists available for purchase. All proceeds go directly to the free clinic. You can also sponsor a clinic client's herbal needs or make a donation of any amount. Every contribution, even as little as $5, helps them continue offering essential services. Thank you for supporting their clinic and helping continue to provide valuable services to those in need! LEARN MORE & DONATE

My daughter asked me recently, “what's your favorite herb?” How was I supposed to answer that?! It's like asking which is your favorite child! Um, all of them! Actually, my response was something along the line of, “whichever I need at that time.” Each year I find myself drawn to 2-3 plants, which I will work with near-daily for several months. For the past few months, my personal favorite has been Verbena Hastata, or Blue Vervain. In this episode, I share all about my friend Blue Vervain, including what it looks like and where you find it growing, it's energetic qualities, proper dosaging and cautions, actions, and specific indications. I also share why I was attracted to this plant and how to know if a plant is right for you. Listen in as herbalist Dana Aronson talks all about the beautiful motherwort! Motherwort’s latin name, Leonurus cardiaca, is depicted from the Greek word leon (lion), ouros (tail), and cardiaca, giving meaning to the heart. This sheds light to the common name, Lion’s Heart. In Europe, the name “motherwort,” has a literal meaning of “mother-herb.” With both of these names, this gives a small peek into the medical properties of this plant we know as Motherwort. Check out Dana’s motherwort monograph! This episode is brought to you by the Breitenbush Herbal Conference. This event is one of the nation’s longest running herbal conference and is an annual gathering for herbalists and healers of all kinds. The next event will take place on September 5 – September 8, 2019 at the Breitenbush Hot Springs in Oregon. It’s a couple hours drive from Portland and Eugene, or an hour and half east of Salem. Dr. Thomas Easley also known as the ‘Hip Hop Forester' is an educator, musician, and entrepreneur. Thomas serves as the Assistant Dean of Community Inclusion at the Yale school of Forestry and Environmental Studies. Prior to this, Thomas was the Director of Community Diversity at NC State University, where he also earned his doctorate. On today's show, Thomas discusses how he inspires his students to achieve, how he got into forestry, and brings up ways we as a profession can get better at inclusion and diversity.   Key Takeaways: [:55] A message from Leadership Nature. [1:40] A quick intro to Thomas's background. [3:25] How did Thomas get into forestry and natural resources? [11:30] It took someone who shared the same identity (race, gender, religion) as Thomas to show him how to treat people outside of his ethnic/social group. [15:15] Thomas shares his journey on how he ended up getting his Masters degree in Forest Genetics. [21:55] Thomas credits his teaching ability to his mom, who was also a teacher. [25:20] What did Thomas teach prior to teaching at Yale? [33:00] What is Thomas teaching currently? [38:05] If you try to make changes too quickly or too aggressively, you're going to be driving people away instead of getting supporters. [41:05] Thomas believes Yale wants him to help them get to a more diverse place. [46:45] What advice does Thomas have for young professionals? [50:20] You gotta look inward sometimes to see where you can improve and be better. It's important to take initiative and not rely solely on others to lift you up. [51:30] What does the profession need to do better to increase more diversity in the profession? [53:30] You can not change and grow while still staying the same. As an industry, we need to be open to growing.   Mentioned in This Episode: Rashadeas.com Thomas on LinkedIn   Tweetables: “If you can't teach children, then you can't teach. I watched my mom teach young kids who were brilliant but had a lot of family problems.”   “We all have voices and we're using our voices.”   “When you really invest in diversity, equality, and inclusion, you're going to be speaking multiple languages at one time.”

On today's episode Geraldine Lavin teaches us all about the blue vervain.  She wrote an excellent monograph on this invaluable plant ally, which you can find HERE.  "It is generally agreed upon in the herbal community that Blue Vervain is the herb for uptight, fanatical, type A personalities. Many herbs have specific organ affinities, whereas blue vervain seems to have more of specific mental state. Thomas Easley says blue vervain is for “tight-necked, over-achieving, list-makers, who can’t ask for help.” Matthew Wood adds that Blue Vervain is for “people who make lists…of other peoples faults.” He also notes that Blue Vervain people tend to be “strong above, weak below” meaning that they can be strong in words, weak in action - very intense and judgmental of others, often holding themselves and those close to them to almost unattainable standards." - Geraldine Lavin For more monographs: www.herbrally.com/monographs Let us know what you thought of the episode!
