Today's episode is all about myrrh! With frequent HerbRally contributor, Heather Irvine.  Heather has a fantastic new audio project that you should know about!  It's called "Sound Wise about Medicinal Plants". LISTEN HERE Heather was super on board with the HerbRally Podcast and audio monographs right from the start. We were both looking for herbal learning to listen to while multitasking and before HerbRally weren't finding many resources, "just a few dry audiobooks about antioxidants written by and read by robots", says Heather. Obviously, things have come a long way with better audiobooks and great herbal podcasts. But Heather has started her own audio-lesson learning catalog: Sound Wise About Medicinal Plants She adds to it almost daily, with rich half-hour to 45-minute audio lessons on medicinal plants, some for a small access fee, and most are still free!   You'll want to check it out soon though and subscribe to one of the free soundcasts, or check out a more specific topic too.  Check out her publisher page: https://mysoundwise.com/publishers/1662240136429p or find out more about SoundWise: https://mysoundwise.com/?lmref=WaXhzA   Thanks for listening!    Mason www.herbrally.com

Last Thursday morning saw the return of dawn raids on eight major insurance companies conducted by the Competition Commission. The commission said it has reasonable grounds to suspect that the insurers have engaged in collusive practices to fix prices and/or trading conditions in respect of fees for investment products such as retirement annuity and premiums for risk-related products. The products are in the life insurance cover, disability cover, life cover and funeral assistance benefits. Tomorrow, legal practitioners, economists, politicians, academics, industry role players and civic society will meet at the 16th Annual Competition Law, Economics and Policy Conference to discuss and reflect on competition regulation, the state of the economy and policy proposals aimed at shaping an inclusive, growing, and deconcentrated economy. Themed “Effective Competition Law Enforcement and Policy Development for Sustainable, Growing and Inclusive Markets” its an opportune time to reflect on that theme and ask whether our competition law is indeed fit for purpose. To talk about this Michael Avery is joined by Heather Irvine, partner at Corporate Department of Bowmans Johannesburg: Ahmore Burger-Smidt, Director at Werksmans Advisory Services & Zakhele Mthembu, legal researcher at Free Market Foundation

Commission's ‘BEE'f with Burger King causes business borborygmi

In one of the most hotly debatable recommendations in recent memory the Competition Commission last week opened the Pandora's box of public interest assessment conditions, which were inserted into the law via the Competition Amendment Act of 2018, when it ruled that the proposed takeover of Burger King by a US private equity fund be prohibited due to the lack of BEE in the new ownership structure. While the Commission found that the proposed transaction was unlikely to impact Competition in the country, it found that ”...the merger would lead to a significant reduction in the shareholding of historically disadvantaged persons in the target firm...”. If upheld at the Tribunal, this ruling could have significant implications for foreign direct investment/foreign investors looking to make acquisitions of SA entities, existing black shareholders, employment, and small to medium sized firms as suppliers. The case also raises questions about whether competition law is the right tool to advance the country's transformation agenda. Michael Avery spoke to Competition Commissioner, Thembinkosi Bonakele; Heather Irvine, Partner in Bowmans Competition practice; David Holland, founder of Fractal Value Advisors and author of Beyond Earnings; & Langa Madonko, SAVCA Director, Investment Principal, Investor Relations & Capital Raising at Summit Africa.

South Africa's draft data and cloud policy: Experts unpack what it means

TechCentral Podcast

On 1 April, the department of communications & digital technologies quietly published a draft national data and cloud policy that has potentially far-reaching implications for the private sector, state-owned enterprises and the public sector broadly. Among other objectives, the draft policy document - which could lead to legislative amendments or even a new act of parliament - seeks to promote South Africa's data sovereignty and security as well as enhance investment opportunities, create jobs and enhance skills development. But it also raises concerns, among them that the policy-making process will eventually create additional regulatory burdens for the private sector while concentrating government cloud business in the public sector to the detriment of private cloud and data service providers. The draft policy document also raises a number of questions around black economic empowerment. Bowmans partners Heather Irvine (who specialists in competition law) and Livia Dyer (ICT policy) join the TechCentral podcast to unpack the importance of the draft policy document, where their concerns with it lie, and what it means for South African companies. Questions that Irvine and Dyer answer include: * Do we really need additional legislation, or even amended legislation, to cater for data centres and cloud services? * Does the Cybercrimes Bill not already deal with some of the issues raised by the department of communications? * If the policy is implemented as it stands, will it reduce competition and harm or exclude private sector players? * Will the draft policy create additional red tape for companies and will it actually help with investment in this space? Don't miss the discussion!

She loves the magic and the sacred in the everyday and the way that the work that she is honored to do can weave the two together. Jean’s work is grounded in clinical herbalism, nutrition, elemental constitution and magic, and harm reduction, and is informed by living with disability, by complex trauma and recovery. Jean was raised in the South and part of their heart will always be there. They really, really love the mountains and the waters in both places. About Jean’s clinical program: The Community Herbalist Clinical Skills Apprenticeship is a 180 hour program in Olympia, WA that will meet one full weekend a month for ten months. It is designed for students who have completed programs in materia medica and medicine making and want to go deeper into herbal medicine and clinical work. The focus will be on matchmaking plants and people, providing person-centered care, and treating the whole person- physical, emotional, and spiritual levels. There will be a particular emphasis on working with the nervous system, mental health, and trauma resolution. Throughout the course we will expand our working knowledge of materia medica and connect with the plants through plant sits and plant walks. More about Jean: Website About Clinical program   Today’s episode is brought to you by the Breitenbush Herbal Conference. Heather will be presenting at the upcoming Breitenbush Herbal Conference this September! We hope to see you there. "Hawthorn is one of those country herbs whose leading quality one might at first describe as benevolent. It is much more powerful though! A great tree, low and broad in stature, it occurs wild in edge-lands of landscapes or occasionally planted for beauty, especially with respect to its generous white blossoms or deep red fruit in the fall and winter. It serves food and sanctuary to wildlife. Overzealous thorns protect birds and smaller critters from those larger ones which receive a memorable gauge and at best a pause to lick one’s wounds! In and around a Hawthorn’s understory, clumsy human types get so focused on the prize… zeroing in on more flowers or more berries, faster, receiving a poke followed by a clumsier startled retraction. Birds and squirrels laugh at us for sure!" - Heather Irvine For more monographs: www.herbrally.com/monographs You can visit Heather online at GivingTreeBotanicals.com Let us know what you thought of the episode! Adaptogens and nootropics have been claimed to do amazing things, but do you ever feel the claims made of herbs such as Ginseng and Rhodiola seem vague, too numerous and too good to be true? There is a reason for that. By definition, adaptogens have broad positive effects -- such as helping us withstand stress -- and are somewhat versatile in use. In this class we will go over some of the commonalities of adaptogens, including how they work, as well as differentiate many specific ones in terms of strengths, applications and energetics. From this you will be better able to articulate what an adaptogen is and what systems adaptogens work on. Tulsi, our Herbstalk plant-of-the-year, is an adaptogen, and we will touch on how it is different than many of the others.  This class was recorded at the wonderful annual event, Herbstalk, which takes place each June in Somerville, MA.  A big shout out and thanks to Steph and Henry, as well as all of the Herbstalk volunteers for organizing and hosting such a great event. "This is a time of year when a lot of people are thinking of their health with diet in mind. Although it actually seems slightly unusual for a lot of herbalists to suggest herbs to support weight loss, our philosophy tends to be more holistic than that, and there is no magic remedy. Especially for this issue, it is a concern a lot of people care about. In preparing to answer a client's follow up question, adding this issue to their list of health concerns, I questioned myself for being biased against speaking to this particular issue. Afterall, it is a leading health concern, motivator and does have something to do with overall health.
