Greetings All You Young Jazz lovers! Brian Phoenix back again with another installement of Jazzism (a katzpheno mix).... one I am certain you are gonna dig the most! I entitled this episode "Work" for two reasons, one it is the title of a composition written by Thelonious Monk and included here on the podcast (performed by Chick Corea Trio), and because work is essential to life. Work gives us purpose and it sustains us. There is an inherient nobility in all forms of work. Work loses it's meaning only when the work being done is not done to the best ability of the worker. It loses its value when it is not properly compensated or valued by the end user (employer or customer). We all got work to do, my work is simple and is stated in my tagline - "Bringing You Nothing But The Best That The World Has To Offer In Jazz Music, This Is Jazzism" as well as in my mission statement "Rescuing Jazz Radio From The Blahs!" Good people, I love my job..... now if I could only get some monetary compensation for the work...that would be awesome. Enjoy the mix, Brian "Katzpheno" Phoenix featuring: Buster Williams - Where Giants Dwell (2018) Nicholas Payton - Levin's Lope (2021) Gregory Porter - Movin' (2013) Dave Holland Sextet - Pass It On (2008) Sonny Rollins - Clear-Cut Boogie (1998) Roy Ayers - Virgo Vibes (1967) Chick Corea Trio - Work (2013) Yellowjackets - An Informed Decision (2013) Cecile McLorin Salvant - The Underling (2015) Geri Allen - Baby, I Need Your Loving (2013) Herlin Riley - You Don't Know What Love Is (2019) Roberta Flack - Tenderly (1994)

I Want to Know What Love Is”. Este single no corrió la misma suerte, logrando un discreto éxito en listas. 07 - Prefab Sprout - Hey Manhattan! 10 - Cutting Crew - (I Just) Died In Your Arms (12'' Mix): Single debut del grupo de Rock Ingles. Publicado en UK en Julio de 1986 y en USA en Enero de 1987. Llegó al primer puesto en Canadá, USA y Finlandia. 11 - The Adventures - Two Rivers (Extended Mix): Originales de Belfast, en 1985 publican su álbum debut “Theodore and friends” del cual se lanzan 4 singles. 12 - Deacon Blue - Real Gone Kid (Extended Version): Single adelanto del segundo álbum del grupo Escoses.

Conversations with Cinthia
I Want to Know What Love Is (8-6-23)

Conversations with Cinthia

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 7, 2023 42:51

Remember that song “I Want to Know What Love Is” by the band Foreigner?  Today Cinthia discusses the lyrics of that song and the deep human longing it captures.  Love is foundational to human beings because God, Who is Love itself, made us in love.  The Bible even says that “love never fails” (I Corinthians 13:8).  Many people, however, think love has failed them because they have experienced the failure of human beings to love well.  And, as bands like Nazareth have sun in the Boudleaux Bryant classics by the same name, “love hurts.”  Many people have been hurt so deeply that they now mistrust love or castigate themselves for trying again and again to make love work.  Today Cinthia looks at some concepts we must understand about love, starting with the need to recognize God as the Source of real love and as its only perfect Example.  We often learn things about love that turn out not to be true, and we may think we have found love, only to realize that what we found was not love at all.  So how do we recognize the real thing? True love does not always feel good.  We often confuse real, healthy, corrective, painful love with abuse because we do not expect love to ever cause negative feelings.  Meanwhile, we interpret experiences that are intense and pleasurable as true love when they may, in fact, not be that at all.  As we become “healthier and more truth-based,” says Cinthia, we become more able to recognize that the thing that makes us feel best in the short-run is not always love.  It is important to recognize, however, that the hurt of true love always produces fruit and growth if we allow it to do so, while hurt that comes from selfishness, dysfunction, foolishness, and narcissism (even when those things masquerade as love) only injures and harms.  It is true that we can choose to gain even from the wounds that did not come from true love, or we can get hurt and then get harder and harder.  Faced with the legitimate hurt of true love and the corrupt injuries of imperfect love, however, many of us want to flee love altogether.  Cinthia explains, though, that “anything that's of value is going to have a deep effect on you, on the people around you and the ones that you love.  And there is no way to only have a Valentines love.  It's immature.  It's stunted in many ways.  So we want to make sure that we're recognizing that love is very powerful -- in good ways and also in negative ways.” The fact is that human beings need love.  While we may benefit from recognizing destructive patterns in our search for love, we are not “stupid” for continuing to try to find love after being hurt.  Humans are made in the image of God, and He always keeps trying.  He is determined to love, and so humans also keep trying.  Cinthia notes, however, that the abovementioned Foreigner song mentions the need to “take a little time” after being hurt in order to heal before trying again too quickly.  She states that this is good and important advice.  She also recommends we try to understand love a little more before we go back out to look for it, saying to God with the lyrics of the song, “I want to know what love is.  I want You to show me.”  God is the One Who most intimately knows what love is because He is Love.  The abovementioned song “Love Hurts” seems to mirror the experience of Jesus in coming to earth, witnessing the tragic state of His own creation all around us, and finally allowing us to kill Him.  He knew, accepted, and experienced that “love hurts, love scars, love wounds and marks.”  He died under the disconnection from others and from self that sin creates, experiencing separation from the Father within His Triune Self because He took our sin on Himself.  His heart was tough enough to experience that pain and remain tender.  Exploring popular songs (especially from the 80's because, well, this is Cinthia's show we're talking about) and ideas from romance novels, Cinthia noted that the most enduring and popular themes reflect the love of Jesus.  In these stories, the Hero sees, rescues, and even dies for the beloved, finally taking her to a place of perfection to live without pain.  What seems unrealistic about these stories when we assume them to be about human relationships makes more sense when we see them reflecting our underlying longings for God.  True love does exist.  True love's pain is not in vain, but for gain.  Cinthia also discussed references to love in the Bible (I Corinthians 13, Romans 12, and about 550+ other appearances of the word, though that number varies by translation) and the advice of Shakespeare from All's Well That Ends Well, Act 1, Scene 1: “Love all, trust a few, do wrong to none.” She advocated trusting  God implicitly because He is perfect but not trusting humans implicitly since doing so can increase our chances of serious and repetitive harm.  This does not, however, mean that we never trust anyone at all besides God.  Instead, we look for trustworthy people.  Trustworthy people are not perfect but do care about their mistakes, grieve when they hurt someone else, and try their best to make things right.  These people, while mistake-making, are not the same kind of dangerous as people who are not trustworthy.  Cinthia encouraged appropriate expectations instead of relational idealism or a refusal to ever trust anyone.  Cinthia recommends that we not blame love for the failures of humans.  Love is a quality, and people exhibit qualities in varying degrees and ways.  Cinthia also considered the question, “What is not love?”  Some so-called “love” is more hurtful than helpful.  Love is not apathy, constant indulgence, passivity, reckless freedom that leads to bondage, enabling, dishonesty, shaming, blaming, guilting, controlling, telling your secrets/“outing” you in front of people, shaming you in public, or chaotic inconsistency. There are elements of love that are undefinable, and Cinthia suggests that this is related to our uniqueness.  We are so different from one another that we do not easily fit with one another.  But God “gets” all of us.  He made you for Himself.  He knows you.  He likes you.  We need to be seen and to be loved and liked at the same time, and only God can fully meet that need. God created us in love.  Relax your body.  Loving can be a dangerous endeavor, but it's so worthwhile.

Foreigner took  some significant time between their fourth and fifth studio albums.  Agent Provocateur was released in December of 1984 and made it to number 5 on the US charts.  Interestingly it hit number 1 in the UK, the only Foreigner album to do so.  It had a balance of heavier rock songs and lighter ballads, allowing the group to appeal to both male and female fans.At the time, Foreigner consisted of Lou Gramm on lead vocals and percussion, Mick Jones on guitars and keyboards, Rick Wills on bass, and Dennis Elliott on drums.  Jones and Gramm are the primary songwriters, and their differences fuel an excellent sound.  Unfortunately, writing credits around this album and its big hit, "I Want to Know What Love Is" would drive dissent.  Gramm would appear on the next Foreigner album, then would split from the group.Friend of the show John Lynch joins us in Bruce's absence, and Rob brings us this album. Tooth and NailThe track that leads off the album was co-written by Mick Jones and Lou Gramm.  While it received some airplay, this rocker is an underrated song from Foreigner.  The lyrics describe a boy considered to be not good enough for the girl, and the fight that he would wage to be worthy of her.Reaction to ActionThe third single from the album is a more hard rocking and energetic song than the first two singles.   Jones and Gramm share writing credits for this one as well.  The lyrics tell of an intriguing girl and how her actions prompt a "reaction to action."A Love in VainThis deeper cut has a heavy synthesizer sound and a lighter rock feel.  This song is also a good showcase of Gramm's vocals.I Want to Know What Love IsThis is the first single and big hit from the album.  It was the song that propelled the album, but drove a wedge between Gramm and Jones.  The track features a New Jersey choir backing Gramm's vocals.  Mick Jones spent a lot of time with the choir, freeing Gramm to sing as he wished.  This freedom, coupled with disputes about writing credits, would drive later decisions for Gramm to depart the group. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Main theme from "Monday Night Football"Broadcaster Howard Cosell would depart the booth, retiring this month. STAFF PICKS:Walking on a Thin Line by Huey Lewis & the News Brian starts off the staff picks with the fifth single off the album "Sports."  Despite its upbeat sound, the subject is more serious than many other Huey Lewis songs.  It tells of an American soldier trained as a sniper in the Vietnam War, and who must face his demons when he returns home.  Naughty Naughty by John Parr  Wayne features a debut single with a great synth beat.  English singer songwriter John Parr writes lyrics attempting a romantic conquest.  Like a Virgin by MadonnaJohn brings us pop phenomenon Madonna with her first number 1 hit.  The song's co-writer Billy Steinberg drew inspiration for this song from a new romantic interest during a time when he thought he would never get over a previous relationship.  The song would become a signature song for Madonna and an iconic song of the 80's.Black Cars by Gino VannelliRob continues the synth heavy trend in this podcast.  The title track from the album of the same name tells of an aging woman fighting the fading of her beauty.  "Black cars look better in the shade.  She slips her lipstick on right before she sleeps for all those phantom lovers in her dreams." INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Junku by Herbie HancockThis song was played on Saturday Night Live when Hancock was the musical guest in the month.

Garrick Bailey and Timothy Paul Jones have already devoted one entire episode of this podcast to love. That was when they discussed Foreigner's 1984 hit “I Want to Know What Love Is.”  But Garrick and Timothy are far too full of love to fit all of their feelings about love into a single episode.  That's why they're joining forces with Huey Lewis to talk about love again in this special Three Chords and the Truth episode of The Apologetics Podcast. Along the way, the dynamic duo discusses the history of Huey Lewis and the News, Augustine of Hippo, the Trinity, and the widespread contemporary declaration that “love is love.”  In the end, they discover that, unless the nature of God defines love, “love” distorts something good that God designed for our joy and for his glory. Also, “American Express” was probably a better name for Huey Lewis' band than “the News.” If only they had spelled it as “Ämërïcän Ëxprëss,” they might have been successful in keeping their original name as well as avoiding being sued by the credit-card company of the same name. In this installment of “Behind the Covers,” Garrick and Timothy take a look at a song that was popularized on the Grand Funk Railroad album “All the Girls in the World Beware!!!,” in which Grand Funk Railroad outdid Van Halen's song “Everybody Wants Some!!” by adding three exclamation points instead of stopping at a mere two. “St. Thomas" Sonny Rollins: Saxophone Colossus (Prestige, 1957) Sonny Rollins, Tommy Flanagan, Doug Watkins, Max Roach. La composición es obra de Sonny Rollins. Tomajazz: © Pachi Tapiz, 2022 ¿Sabías que? "St. 062: Leveraging Email Marketing AFTER the Purchase [Email Marketing Series #5 of 6]

Beyond the Broadcast- Doing More with Email Marketing Welcome the 5th episode of our 6 part series on Email Marketing. This is the final interview with an expert from one of the email marketing companies in this series. We are talking with Ramon Darling from Keap. In this conversation with Ramon we discuss things that help to bring forward the power of email marketing and using email throughout the customer journey. Specifically, we're talking about after the purchase. Typically entrepreneurs don't plan for after the purchase because once you take payment and somebody becomes a customer the customer experience often times will be less than perfect because you have exhausted all of your efforts just getting the customer. What happens once you take payment is the actual customer experience on their side. Everything up to that point was YOUR effort to make them a customer. "When you think about customer experience don't think about it as a seller… think about it from the perspective of the buyer." -Ramon Darling Email marketing up until the purchase is self serving. It is for your business. We are talking about my sweet spot here. I love the customer journey and we are over delivering on our promises. This is when the customer sees their journey. Ramon talks about the customer journey using a Foreigner song “I Want to Know What Love Is”. He says the lyrics of the chorus of that song really explains the customer experience when you break it down into the four groups of suspects, prospects, opportunities, and customers. A suspect says: “I WANT TO KNOW WHAT LOVE IS.” They go out and search for a solution. They become a prospect when they say “I WANT YOU TO SHOW ME”. This might be the CTA. When you deliver something to them they want to see themselves in the solution. So you customize your approach and deliver on that expectation this is “I WANT TO FEEL WHAT LOVE IS”. This means they want to be brought into the experience and feel how it works for them. They become a customer when they say, “I KNOW YOU CAN SHOW ME.” The whole experience has informed their purchasing decision. So this is where you need to make them feel the love and deliver on the central proposition. "The customer experience is leveraging all of the unique things you did throughout the journey in the marketing portion of the acquisition and figuring out how to leverage those same tools to create an amazing customer experience." - Ramon Darling This leads to people saying great things about you and thus generating more sales. Some parts of that experience comes with whatever tool you are using to deliver your content. This is one aspect of it. What you have landing in their inbox after the purchase is a very big piece of the experience you are providing them. Different Types of Emails to Send After the Purchase Story lines- 5 fundamental elements of any story include: Exposition Rising Action Climax Falling Action Resolution The climax is the actual purchase. The rising action is all the promises you are making. So the falling action is the beginning of the customer journey. The first thing you want to do is recap everything you promised and insure people know exactly what they bought. This is a common failing of business. We tend to think that since we have communicated for a while that people know what they bought. But there is so much emotion that goes into purchasing so we need to clearly state now that you have bought here is what you have purchased and here is how you can expect to receive what you purchased and clearly let them know the next steps. People should always feel like they understand what the transformation is. "If you can in the very beginning talk about their mini journey and what success looks like you're making that experience real for the buyer." -Ramon Darling Connecting on a Personal Level Ramon says if they can connect with this on a personal level, they'll not only be engaged in the process but they'll also want to talk about it. This the most important thing. Be clear on what you sold and what the transformation looks like. Let your customers know the expectations so that it helps set them up for success through what they have purchased. Not every buyer is the same. It's important to know the different types of people you are working with. There may be some people out there who don't want to see video content. This is when it comes in handy to have a transcript of that video content. If you can distill from your video content what exactly it is you are delivering you can drive people back to the content. You don't want to put all your eggs in one basket because if you do that you're leaving an opportunity on the table. An interesting example of this is the TEDtalks podcast. I will listen to those and if I'm interested in what I hear, then I will go back and watch the actual video of that TEDtalk. When it comes to learning your customer and how they consume content make sure you're open to providing your content in the way that they want. The only way you are going to learn this about them is to communicate with them. You don't want to create an “overwhelm” with your content. For example, if you have a course and each of your videos is an hour long...break those videos up into more courses. You need to create a sense of winning because if people feel like they are losing or not progressing they are going to give up on the course and say it's not for them. You can use automation to kind of push people along in your course to insure that they get to the end of it. This speaks to the transformational process. Plan for people to not complete your course so that when they start to fall off you reach out to them and help them succeed. This helps you connect on a personal level. If you think about people when they make New Year's resolutions. Providing accountability for your customer is never really a bad thing. We use accountability in the form of calendars and reminders. [bctt tweet="“If you can gamify the experience for the consumer and deliver accountability the way that they expect you're once again creating this feeling of tremendous satisfaction for your consumer.”- Ramon Darling" username="@techofbusiness"] Ramon gave an example of a partner that he works with. He explained that they have a system for delivering their content that is not just about leveraging the technology and the consumer experience, but also about creating a repeatable, predictable experience internally. So when they deliver the first module/course, they set into motion a series of tasks that based on the course content and based on the expectations in the course. Then, based on that, the internal representative who is attached to that customer also is pinged with a task. Three days in a row they are supposed to send out a unique message that is clearly not automated. Automation is great, but there also needs to be a human experience attached to your content delivery. You don't want to use technology in its entirety because you want to create a concierge experience for your customer. Make sure people feel connected to you on a human level. When Do You Know… You have to have a strategy that forms a plan. A plan allows you to allocate resources. Resources allow you to execute. And then you measure the experience as a user. And then you measure the consumer experience. You tie those two things together and it informs that strategy all the way back up the line to the beginning of the process. Whenever you build something with these elements, you need to have an expectation of the outcome. But more importantly you need to have an expectation of when the transformation occurs. You need to be able to say once you deliver a customer will be able to recognize value in X amount of time. As an entrepreneur, you have to reach out to consumers and say, “Now that you have completed your course and you've achieved X and we need to measure your satisfaction.” Ramon is not a fan of the customer surveys you get at the end of a phone call. They don't collect enough info from the consumer to identify where there is room for improved. By the time you get to the end of a course, you should have a system in place to send to your consumer that talks about the most important elements of the course and if people consumed, understood the outcome, and were able to achieve it. You need to be able to understand that and deliver that. You have to collect information from your consumers because people want to tell you things. These things they tell you can even generate a new revenue stream for you. I actually set up callwithjaime.com to be available for people to talk to me about what they want out of the podcast and what they are struggling with in regard to technology. This is pre-consumer, but it helps me to identify what my audience wants to learn about. Talking Simple Tactics If you are a service based business that is consultative then offer people an additional consult at the end of the course. You can then turn what was just a course content into a 1:1 retainer that is perpetual and recurring. There is a real opportunity there. Sometimes people want to spend more money to have direct access. You have to give them the opportunity to do that. Never make assumptions about financial opportunity. Do the things that people expect. Deliver discount offers to purchase more products. People are conditioned to purchase things at certain times. Follow the conditioning. Sending Messages After the Purchase Ramon says everything we have talked about can be delivered through emails. Because email marketing is so omnipresent, there are so many cool plugins that will allow you to do really unique things leveraging the email marketing. There is this cool thing called picsnippets. It's a really cool thing that makes people smile. This is leveraging your tools. If you are automating the follow up to deliver the emails, but you have a tool that tells you how much of the video someone watched you can use that for all the downstream communication. This information could allow you to downsell to other products instead of having someone quit you altogether. Campaigns should feel like little mini experiences that you can tie together. People live through emails. You need to think about the cadence of your messaging. You need to be able track not only the open rates but also the click rates. Then modify your communication based on that data. This is still relevant in the customer experience. Customers need to be looked at as lifetime value not the one time purchase. Tailoring additional sales based on the information they provide you is paramount. It's so vital to have an actual strategy when you are using email to communicate with all the prospects and customers that you have. It's something you are going to be working in for the length of your business. You need to collect testimonials from your customers. People want to give them to you. You just have to ask for them. Think about it as Amazon. Do you check the testimonials when you go to buy something on Amazon? OF COURSE YOU DO! There is something more genuine about someone else telling the story of what you do. Just ask people if you can take a testimonial of their experience and then leverage it. "Just make sure that you are leveraging email marketing to create a personalized experience that makes people feel really warm and fuzzy inside." - Ramon Darling Connect with Jaime: Instagram: @techofbusiness Twitter: @techofbusiness Facebook: @yourbiztech LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jaimeslutzky/ Email: jaime@techofbusiness.com Connect with Ramon: Twitter: @KeapGrowing FB: @keap IG: @keap LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/keap-growing/ https://keap.com/
