Greg Harford: More than 6000 businesses at risk of closing - report

Canterbury Mornings with Chris Lynch

A new report looking into the state of the retail sector reveals a grim outlook.Approximately 6700 retail businesses are at risk of closure during the rest of the year, but even more shockingly, 17,100 could shut up shop for good as a result of Covid-19.Of the some-27,000 retail businesses in New Zealand, just 10,000 are understood to be in a stable financial position.New Zealand's retail sector continues to face severe pressures due to the pandemic, Retail NZ chief executive Greg Harford told the Herald.Throughout March and April, revenue in the sector was down an average of 80 per cent. In May, as the country moved to alert level 2, overall sales were down 12.7 per cent compared to the same time last year, the latest Retail Radar report shows.A survey of Retail NZ members found that 24 per cent of businesses either expected to cease trading or were not confident they could continue, and a further 37 per cent said that their survival hung in the balance. The perception that shops were open and trading again and therefore performing well was far from the reality for most operators, Harford said. The realities of the situation could be seen by the number of announced store closures by large retailers over the past month."Margins are so tight across the sector that many retail businesses will be unable to recover from the lockdown."The majority of businesses now facing closure were operators that were doing okay prior to the pandemic and subsequent lockdown, Harford said."Having lost two months' revenue and moving into an uncertain trading environment, where consumers aren't spending as much as they were pre-Covid, puts them in a very difficult position."It was concerning that just 10,000 businesses said they were confident or in a stable financial position, he said."Retail has been difficult for a long time - margins are extraordinarily low across the sector and it is very challenging at the best of times and you throw Covid into the mix and it becomes next to impossible."New Zealand's retail sector took about five years to recover from the Global Financial Crisis in 2007-2008. Covid-19 has had a far greater impact to the sector, and Harford believes it could take a decade for a full recovery.Source: Retail Radar ReportThe sector needed more financial support otherwise it would inevitably face mass closures. It desperately needed continued wage subsidies and a rent relief, he said. The wage subsidy extension was not an option for a large number of struggling businesses due to the renewed requirements of a 50 per cent reduction in revenue from 30 per cent.Retail also needed a "healthy dose of fiscal stimulation", Harford said: "We need to get consumers out there confidently spending, and whether that comes through tax cuts through helicopter payments or other measures the Government got, we need to have consumers feeling confident enough to get out and support local businesses."Consumer confidence has fallen by about 50 per cent over the past two months, according to the ANZ Roy Morgan Consumer Confidence Index. There was some improvement in May, though consumer confidence is still down 20 per cent from what it was in February. The reduction in consumer confidence had already started to flow through to store closures within the sector, Harford said.H&J Smith Group has announced it will close some of its South Island stores, this follows similar moves by Bunnings, Smiths City, Michael Hill and The Warehouse, among others.Retailers were now in the phase of "taking steps to try and survive", Harford said.Job lossesRetailer confidence is waning and the outlook for the short term is expected to bring about 16,800 job losses within the sector, the Retail Radar report outlines. As of May, 7500 jobs within retail are expected to be lost.By the medium term, in addition to the 16,800 jobs expected to have been lost in the short, a further 15,500 job losses in retail are expected. If the forecasted 17,100 r...

As stay-at-home orders went into effect throughout our nation in March, I was encouraged to see many pastors take to social media. They sent video updates to their people about the shift to online services and digital discipleship. They were using the tools they had at their disposal in order to bring calming and encouraging words to many who were scared and confused. Soon, many of us would find ourselves glued to these same devices, seeking answers to the unknowns and hoping to grasp some semblance of control. In the last few years, we have all heard about the dangerous effects of technology in our lives and how we need to balance our use of these tools, but all of that advice and discipline simply went out the door as the virus cut us off from the normal rhythms of our daily lives. Throughout March and April, most of the headlines about technology were about how we can utilize it to continue working, socializing, and staying connected. Much of the conversation originally shifted away from the negative and polarizing effects of these technologies to how they became a life raft in the midst of this storm. But the public mood is shifting once again, and we are starting to see many of the corrosive effects of technology on our lives. In today’s episode, I’m talking with Sharon Oxendine about women and entrepreneurship.  In addition to shepherding the funding journey of hundreds of entrepreneurs, Sharon has her own path to purpose; emerging from her childhood as a student in the segregated south.  Throughout March, we're celebrating International Women's Month with focused stories about what it means to both a female and a leader in 2020; the joys, the challenges, and the perspectives.  Sharon's story is our first tribute story. She talks about gender, race, faith, money, self doubt, health, loss, and purpose all in a matter of 20 minutes. This conversation is full of gems.  "I’m there to hold the container for women - to make sure they can see themselves (living their dream) and saying how can I support you?"  -Sharon Sharon Oxendine is the Director of the Western Women's Business Center in North Carolina. She helps entrepreneurs articulate their vision and secure the funding required to launch. On June 18, 2020, she is hosting the 6th Western Women's Business Conference at AB Tech in Asheville. I am delighted to be on of the presenters, and I hope you'll join us if you live in Western North Carolina. Tickets Available Here. "What you realise is that people don't mind when people have clear boundaries. In fact, they APPRECIATE them". GBD51 Gretchen Pisano and Alexis Robin are co-founders of pLink Leadership, a US-based management consultancy that provides leadership-development, executive coaching, and curriculum-creation. AICPA & CIMA's Jennifer Gardner hears from our guests about an adaptive mindset. Why it matters? How it helps us decide to intervene on behalf of ourselves,  speed up how we adapt to a changing world and accommodate volatility in the workplace.   CONCLUDING WOMEN'S HISTORY MONTH 2019. Throughout March we've featured a bonus selection of interviews with women who've become movers and shakers in the accounting, finance and business professional sphere. Episodes every Wednesday as usual with 'Friday Focus' shows for some extra weekend inspiration.   WE DISCUSS: Boundaries. Making sure staff mindsets are as “nimble and lean” as the company. Developing our own 'complexity of mind' by inviting insights and inputs from those around us. Challenging our own internal biases. Taking an active role in change. The strengths that women bring. How women are naturally wired to have an adaptive mindset - but how this can sometimes get in the way too. The difference between creating a community for the long term, and simply collaborating in the short term. Changing our 'self-talk'.    OUR GUESTS: pLink CEO and founding partner Gretchen Pisano has worked with many Fortune 50 clients. A Faculty member of the Business Learning Institute, she also serves on the Board of the Frederick County Fraternal Order of Police Spouses’ Association. LEXINGTON, Ky. (March 11, 2019) – The University of Kentucky community is celebrating Women’s History Month. Throughout March, UKNow will feature the women — past and present — on whose shoulders we stand and whose hard work has made our achievements possible. With a combination of fierce resolve and deep compassion, UK women have left indelible marks on our university. Join us as we highlight these #WomenOfUK. As part of her early graduate work, Karen Clancy, interviewed 10 physicians and staff affiliated with the UK College of Medicine for the school’s fiftieth anniversary. One of her subjects, Dr. Jaqueline Noonan, was the first woman to chair a clinical department for the college. During the interview, Noonan talked about the ways in which women had changed not only the face of medicine, but how it was practiced.  That conversation led Clancy, a faculty member in the UK College of Health Sciences to ask, “how have women changed medicine?” To date, Clancy has interviewed 25 women who graduated from the UK College of Medicine between 1964 and 1975. She focused on this group because UK began admitting women to medical school in 1960, and she wanted to learn about their experiences prior to the adoption of Title IX. The “Women in White: Women Physicians Oral History Project” is a collection of oral histories featuring the perspectives and memories of ground-breaking women who completed medical school when only six to 10 percent of physicians were women. They were trailblazers who successfully pursued professional careers, made scientific contributions and brought a new dimension to medicine. They became leaders of medical associations, chairs of academic departments, discoverers, scientists and givers of compassionate and innovative care in their communities.  They told stories of barriers, triumphs and leadership. Dr. Jacqueline Noonan, a pediatric cardiologist went on to have a medical condition, Noonan Syndrome, named after her. Dr. Flora Johnson came the United States with her sisters when she was just 14 years old. She was told by countless people along her journey that she couldn’t make it in medical school and wouldn’t become a physician, she still practices family medicine in Alhambra, California. Dr. Ardis Hoven, one of the first women to serve as president of the American Medical Association and the first woman elected chair of the World Medical Association said, “Women have a special something that makes them ready to care and to lead. They’ve made medicine more personal, we go the extra mile.” On this week's episode of "Behind the Blue" you’ll hear these stories and more as we talk with Clancy about her project. The Women in White: Women Physicians Oral History Project is housed in the Louie B. Nunn Center for Oral History at the University of Kentucky.  Support for the collection was funded in part by the Arvle Turner Research Fund and the Kentucky Oral History Commission of the Kentucky Historical Society. Become a subscriber to receive new episodes of “Behind the Blue” each week. UK’s latest medical breakthroughs, research, artists and writers will be featured, along with the most important news impacting the university. Hosts Rania Khalek and Kevin Gosztola break down some of the many social issues raised by the campaigns of Clinton, Sanders, and Donald Trump. This episode includes talk about Black Lives Matter activist Ashley Williams Clinton over her "super-predator" comment in 1996. We spend time on Washington Post Jonathan Capehart, who helped the Clinton campaign do damage control and even went so far as to defend what Clinton said about "super-predators" back in 1996. We also highlight recent developments with the closure of Guantanamo military prison and Rasmea Odeh's . Throughout March, as the election intensifies even more with primaries, we intend to post our interview and our discussion separately so we are not posting 90-minute episodes, which listeners cannot consume and appreciate in one sitting. By separating them, there will be more political discussion for our listeners to enjoy throughout the entire week. *Our interview with Vivek Chibber, a sociology professor at NYU, was posted separately.
