David has a Light Phone III, and it's making him wonder a lot of things about technology. So The Verge's Allison Johnson joins the show to talk about the whole trend of minimalist smartphones, and to figure out which features a smartphone absolutely needs, and which ones we could all probably do without. After that, The Verge's Andy Hawkins takes us through a big weekend in the Tesla Takedown movement, what's happening with Elon Musk's car company, how automakers are responding to impending tariffs, and whether we're wrong to be excited about the new Nissan Leaf. Finally, The Verge's Jen Tuohy answers a question from the Vergecast Hotline (call 866-VERGE11, or email vergecast@theverge.com!) about all-seeing cameras in our homes. Which mostly don't exist yet. Big tech companies are forever making promises about the future. And you might (or might not) be surprised how often they don't come true. On this episode, Nilay and David start by discussing the good and bad of Apple's new iPads and Macs, before diving into the supposedly AI-powered, all-powerful Siri that is delayed indefinitely. Maybe this whole "AI will fix everything" plan wasn't such a good one. After that, The Verge's Andy Hawkins joins to discuss what's going on with Tesla: why sales are down, how the perception of the company has shifted as Elon Musk's job description has changed, and how it happened that President Trump did a Tesla sales pitch on the White House lawn. Everything's computer, you know? Finally, in the lighting round, the hosts discuss Brendan Carr's ongoing shenanigans, Jay Graber's sartorial burns, the future of Pokemon Go, and much more. So today I'm talking to Andy Hawkins, The Verge's transportation editor, about what's going on in the skies. Andy just edited a big piece for us by writer Darryl Campbell that helps put a lot of what's happening in air travel right now in perspective. It has some very reassuring data points, but it also raises important questions about what we need to do next to reinstill confidence in air travel. Andy and I talked about how safe it really is to fly right now — extremely safe, it turns out — and how the current air traffic systems might change for better and worse. And, of course, we talked about Elon Musk. Robotaxis: in. EVs: Out? The Verge's Andy Hawkins joins the show to talk about the goings-on in the transportation industry, including the reasons car makers are slowing down on EV production (but not giving up entirely) and why suddenly everyone's back in on robotaxis. Then, The Social Web Foundation's Evan Prodromou tells us what's new with the fediverse. We talk about Bluesky, Threads, Mastodon, and the increasingly ambitious plans for the ActivityPub protocol. Finally, we talk through some feedback on last week's episode about the pricing of the iPhone 16E, and how the way you buy your phone changes the way you feel about its price. Happy Thanksgiving! Pivot is off for the holiday, so we're bringing you an episode of Decoder with Nilay Patel. Nilay is talking about something we've discussed a lot on Pivot — Elon Musk, Donald Trump, and Tesla. How is the CEO of an electric car company, an outspoken advocate for combating climate change, going to square his support for Trump and a Republican policy agenda centered on climate change denial? Verge transportation editor Andy Hawkins joins to make sense of it all, and to figure out how Elon and Tesla may still benefit, even if Trump's climate policy reversals and tariffs lay waste to the auto industry. Today we're talking about Elon Musk, Donald Trump, and Tesla — and I have to say, it feels like the first of many episodes about these three characters that we'll be doing over the course of the next four years. Because when Elon used his wealth and influence to help Trump get elected, he also bought himself a seat at the president-elect's inner circle. But what does the world's richest person really want in return? And how is the CEO of an electric car company, an outspoken advocate for combating climate change, going to square his support for Trump and a Republican policy agenda centered on climate change denial? Verge transportation editor Andy Hawkins joins me this week to make sense of it all, and to figure out how Elon and Tesla may still benefit, even if Trump's climate policy reversals and tariffs lay waste to the auto industry. This is the second episode about the Peacock docuseries “Bronx Zoo '90.” The documentary is the story of the 1990 New York Yankees, a last-place team in a most tumultuous year. One of the series' executive producers Brian Hunt is the President of Believe Studios. He joins the podcast to discuss how the original 8-part series written by Joel Sherman for the New York Post was picked up by the streaming service Peacock and turned into the docuseries. In 1990, Yankees owner George Steinbrenner was banned for life (he would be reinstated years later). Mel Hall brought cougars into the Yankee clubhouse and dated a teenager (He's currently serving a 45-year prison sentence after being found guilty of two counts of sexual assault against minors.). Andy Hawkins threw a no-hitter but lost the game. The team was rock bottom, but that team is considered the starting point of rebuilding the Yankees into the dynasty that won three championships in four seasons in the late 90s. Hunt is President of Believe Studios, and Head of Development at Believe Entertainment Group, an Academy Award and Emmy Award-winning, New York City-based entertainment company. Hunt leads the company's studio division, developing and producing high-profile content for Digital (video + podcasts), TV, and Film. In this episode, Hunt explains how he and his team figured out that the 1990 Yankees were a story worth telling. He also went to the high school where Mel Hall dated that 15-year-old girl and she took him to the prom. This episode is sponsored by/brought to you by BetterHelp. The unique story of the 1990 New York Yankees was retold in 2020 in an 8-part series featured in the New York Post by Joel Sherman. It was then picked up and told again in a new docuseries on Peacock entitled, “Bronx Zoo '90.” Joel Sherman has worked at the New York Post since 1989 -- for seven years as the New York Yankees beat writer and since 1996 as the Baseball Columnist. He has also worked at MLB Network as an on-air Insider for nearly a decade. The 1990 Yankees are about a last-place team in a most tumultuous year. The owner George Steinbrenner was banned for life (he would be reinstated years later). Mel Hall brought cougars into the Yankee clubhouse and dated a teenager. Andy Hawkins threw a no-hitter but lost the game. The team was rock bottom, but that started the rebuild into the Yankee dynasty that won three championships in four seasons in the late 90s. In this episode, Sherman recounts covering the Yankees in 1990. He explained how during Covid in 2020, he crafted the series of articles that led to the docuseries. He also speaks about the differences between covering baseball then and today.

In a dimly lit underground club, the audience gathered, a congregation of the techno-faithful. The night was young, but the atmosphere was charged with a palpable sense of anticipation. The curtain of reality was about to be drawn back, revealing glimpses of the sublime and the chaotic. As the stage lights flickered to life, Skinny Puppy took their positions. It was a peculiar, chilly autumn evening when the temperature outside seemed to mirror the eerie chill that permeated the venue. “Spahn Dirge (Live)” began its haunting journey, a sonic invocation that pulled the crowd into a trance. Images of distorted realities flashed across screens, intertwining with the hypnotic soundscape. It was as if the audience had stepped through a tear in the fabric of the universe, a glimpse into a surreal and phantasmagorical realm. The live performance was not merely a concert but a communion with the otherworldly. Meanwhile, outside in the drizzle-laden night, a solitary pilgrim embarked on a personal odyssey. With headphones clamped firmly in place, they ventured forth, their every step synchronized with the mournful strains of God's “Lord, I'm On My Way.” The lyrics became a mantra of longing and existential uncertainty, the perfect accompaniment to their solitary voyage. In a world consumed by noise and chaos, two friends sought solace in the simplicity of nature. Their canoe sliced through the tranquil waters of a remote river, and Andy Hawkins and Bill Laswell's “Headwaters” played softly on a portable speaker. The music harmonized with the rustle of leaves and the gentle gurgle of the river, forging a profound connection between man and the natural world. Back within the subterranean club, Echthros unfurled “Iyov” upon the eager assembly. The song was a tempest of aggression and discord, a sonic maelstrom that mirrored modern existence's chaotic pulse. It became a cathartic release, a collective purging of pent-up frustrations and societal dissonance. In the solitude of his studio, Justin Broadrick embarked on a sonic experiment. “Guitar Two” emerged as a mesmerizing composition, distorted guitar sounds woven together in a hypnotic haze. It was a journey into the depths of sound, an exploration of the boundaries of creativity and expression. These diverse musical vignettes, seemingly disjointed in their tonalities and emotional cadence, converge without incongruity. Today's mix is an expedition through the corridors of introspection and catharsis. See you next week. Small to medium-sized businesses (SMEs) have a crucial role to play in sustainability, despite some thinking they are too small to make an impact. SMEs make up around 90% of businesses globally; while individual SMEs may have a smaller impact compared to larger corporations, their collective action can have a significant effect on environmental impact. In this episode, our host Will Richardson explores the question: are you ever too small to make a difference? To shed light on this topic, he is joined by two experts who assist SMEs on their sustainability journeys: Sarah Whale, Managing Director of Profit Impact, and Andy Hawkins, Chief People, Planet, and Purpose Officer at Business on Purpose. This episode of the Sustainability Solved Podcast is sponsored by Good Citizens. Good Citizens is an eyewear brand like no other. Born to untrash the planet of single-use plastic. Good Citizens turns a discarded single-use plastic bottle into a pair of 100% recycled frames. It took them 752 days & 2500+ failed attempts to perfect the first pair of sunglasses. Even more unique, the modular system means you can repair each part in seconds. So, if your dog munches on them, it's all fixable. Use this discount code GREEN20 to get $20AUD off and help untrash the planet. Highlights: Sarah and Andy both share the belief that no business is too small to make a difference. Sarah emphasises that it starts with individuals and their actions, regardless of whether they belong to a big corporation or work independently. Andy illustrates this by using an analogy of playing football without a goalkeeper, where even individual contributions add up to make a significant difference. He cites historical figures like Nelson Mandela and Florence Nightingale who made a tremendous impact despite being part of a bigger system. Many business owners find it challenging to make sustainability a top priority. Sarah and Andy agree that time restraints, prioritisation, and limited resources are common challenges for SMEs. Will points out that some businesses may consider financial constraints as a reason for not prioritising sustainability, however engaging in sustainable practices can strengthen a business's financial position. Andy adds that B Corps have reported positive financial outcomes, trading at 28% above GDP. He plans to conduct research to further investigate these benefits and explore the barriers that prevent businesses from measuring and improving their social and environmental impact. The special episode is brought to you live from Hand Fest! Shout Louder took to the stage with Robin Leitch from Random Hand and Dani Rascal from Faintest Idea, with the aim of resolving the dispute between their bands once and for all. Even if you're not familiar with the UK ska-punk scene, you're guaranteed a laugh out of this hilarious episode. Stay tuned to learn about Norfolk Jesus, the rumours of the Rhubarb Triangle, and to discover which band member may or may not be a secret Tory. The episode had our live audience in stitches and culminates in an epic battle of the thumbs. Celebrating 20 years of Random Hand, Hand Fest was an incredible two-day event at the Brudenell in Leeds, featuring bands like Sonic Boom Six, Riskee & The Ridicule and Popes of Chillitown. The event sold out in record time and the DIY punk community came out in force. Yorkshire's ska-core heroes Random Hand have an ongoing rivalry with Norfolk street-punks Faintest Idea, which began with a joke about cabbages but rapidly descended into online warfare. So, when the opportunity arose to debate this in front of a crowd, we simply couldn't resist. The episode also features a live version of Pack It Up by Random Hand, recorded at Hand Fest by the marvellous Andy Hawkins. Check us out at shout-louder.com or @shoutlouderzine on socials. In this episode, David sits down to speak to Andy Hawkins who helps companies to get B Corp certification. That designation shows that a business is meeting high standards when it comes to social and environmental performance. To secure and keep it companies are monitored using verifiable performance data. Andy explains what his work involves, and the positive impact B Corp is having on the world and the companies that strive to achieve the standard. He set up a “couch to 5K” style process, which he has successfully taken 130 businesses through in just 20 months. When you use B Corp companies you know you are dealing with ethical firms. B Corp covers social and environmental impact. Any type, size of business, in any country can use B Corp to improve their ethics. Most company owners think they run an ethical business. It is only when you ask them – How do you know that is the case? That they realize there is room for improvement. People want to work for and stay with B Corp companies. Stop being afraid of selling. If you have what someone needs, why would you not want to give them the chance to buy it? Only 700 companies in the UK meet the B Corp standards. There is currently a private member's bill going through parliament that will make meeting high ethical standards a legal responsibility. Seek and act on the advice you get from people that you trust. Be resilient. Don't give up and always have a plan B. Invest in yourself. Take time out to regularly recalibrate. BEST MOMENTS ‘B Corp is to business what Fairtrade is to coffee,' ‘B Corp is not a once and forever destination, it is an ongoing process.' ‘All round resilience, being able to get back up when you are knocked down, is important.' ‘If you are looking at making a big change in your life, understand what motivates you.' These demonic decibel gluttons are having the time of their lives in hammer-of-the-gods territory. With special guest Andy Hawkins! YOU DON’T KNOW MOJACK is a podcast dedicated to exploring the entire SST catalogue, in order, from start to finish. During the podcast we will discuss all the releases that are part of our core DNA, as well as many lesser-known releases that deserve a second chance, or releases that we are discovering for the very first time (we actually don’t know Mojack!). First and foremost we are fans, and acknowledge that we are not perfect and don’t know everything – sometimes the discussion is more about a time, place, feeling, personal experience or random tangents, and less about the facts (but we will try to get to the facts too). On deep diving into the crappy, pre-glorious Yankee years of Brien Taylor and Mel Hall and Andy Hawkins; on when to knock on a subject's door, and whether five phone calls are too many; on seeking out jacket blurbs and landing a literary deal on a less-than-obvious subject matter.
On this weeks podcast Plymouth Parkway boss Lee Hobbs reflects on the challenges of life in the Western League and Andy Hawkins, assistant manager at Ashton and Backwell, talks about the sides that have impressed him this season.

Why'd You Push That Button? is back. We took a break last week to feast on Thanksgiving side dishes, and now we've returned to break down why we snack on our own Instagram content. More specifically, we want to know why people rewatch their own Instagram stories and obsessively check who's viewed them. We talk to our friend and true influencer Claire Carusillo about her foray into Instagram stories and how she's focused on the platform after ending her beauty newsletter. We also chat with The Verge's senior transportation reporter Andy Hawkins about how he uses Instagram stories to record his kids and create the 2017 version of home videos. Then, finally, we take all our questions to Nir Eyal, the author of the book Hooked: How to Build Habit-Forming Products, who explains how Instagram trapped us into this viewing cycle. Welcome to episode 145, this week I want to revisit something that so many people ignore or underestimate the importance of….your LinkedIn profile picture! But first a few interesting things I saw this week; An open letter to Jeff Weiner by Oleg Vishnepolsky The main highlights from this were; Anonymous like and dislike buttons Managing your feed Better management of followers/connections Who is most active Who engages with you the most Bookmarking of updates and posts LinkedIn tell Windows app users it is no longer supported…and then say it was a mistake! Russia completes LinkedIn ban by demanding Google and Apple remove the app No Fake news from LinkedIn. Really? These comments are very misleading from Daniel Roth, Editors do not control all published posts and certainly not all updates. That said, fake news is pretty rare on LinkedIn. New Desktop UI Update: There are strong rumours that LinkedIn have had to put the roll-out on hold due to problems. One of the problems seems to be that users are getting their account suspended for no reason, just as I did! According to this interesting post from Andy Hawkins, it would appear that Boolean does still work in the new UI….despite LinkedIn previously stating it didn’t! It’s hard to know what to believe, my experiments suggested it didn’t but maybe they have changed this since. Is Your Profile Picture Up To Scratch? I found an excellent article this week that reminded me of the importance of this subject; Can an AI perfect your LinkedIn profile picture? The new service this refers to is a fantastic idea - Snappr Photo Analyzer Analyse your LinkedIn profile photo here (make sure you are logged into LinkedIn in another tab first) Unfortunately I didn’t score so well!; This is a subject I always cover in my training, as does pretty much every LinkedIn or social media trainer in the world - it’s the most obvious thing to get right and yet so many people get it wrong. As a random experiment I ran a search on LinkedIn with the following criteria; 10 miles radius of my office 3rd tier + Then I viewed the first 20 profiles and here are the mistakes I found; Out of focus Poor lighting An action shot of 2 men playing football - one might be the profile owner? Too far away - full torso in view Two people in the image Dressed for a night out on the town. Looking away from the camera Wearing a safety hat Wedding photo The grey ‘thing’ - no photo So only 10 profiles had decent profile photos and out of those I would only give 4 of them a 8+ out of 10 score. Other common mistakes I often see; Holding or standing next to a product Image includes or is only of their kids Any obvious selfie, especially ones taken on a train! Showing too much flesh - especially cleavage! Looking too serious or miserable Sunglasses The 5 simple rules of a great profile photo Close up - head and shoulders max In-focus and current Clothing you would wear for a business meeting Smiling Just you With the new desktop UI design, all profile photos will be circular - across every section and on mobile so it is important to check what your current profile photo looks like in a desktop search result or on the mobile app. I found this interesting Question: What’s the verdict on showing other things as well as you in your profile, like famous people, awards, the FA cup you once stood next to in a football museum etc? Also: Should I have my LinkedIn profile picture taken by a professional photographer? I answer both these questions in the podcast and refer to an episode of the winbusinessin podcast where I interviewed ‘The Headshot Guy’ John Cassidy Season 1 Episode 5. LinkedIn Profile Photo’s with ‘The Headshot Guy’

In 2013, billionaire eccentric inventor Elon Musk announced an idea called the Hyperloop: a super-fast, low-friction transportation system that looked like the prom photo for a subway tunnel and a bullet-train. Musk made the Hyperloop an open-sourced project, inviting thinkers, scientists, and fellow inventors — no matter their age — to help make the potentially revolutionary concept into a reality. This year, we're seeing some of the early steps from the theoretical sketch room to a real world groundbreaking ceremony. In January, students participated in a design contest for the pods that would travel inside the Hyperloop's tube, and later this year, a piece of test track will be constructed by global construction firm Aecom. For many folks, though, the specifics behind the Hyperloop remain vague. So naturally, I've invited my friend and colleague Andy Hawkins to explain. Learn more about your ad choices.
