LEXINGTON, Ky. (June 13, 2024) – [THIS IS AN ENCORE EPISODE.] This week marks the beginning of Campus Pride Week here at the University of Kentucky. Celebrated nationally in June, Campus Pride Week, hosted by the Office of LGBTQ* Resources (housed in the Office for Student Success) allows students, faculty and staff an opportunity to honor pride on campus while the spring semester is still in session.  Throughout the week, the campus acknowledges the diversity of identities, experiences and histories in the LGBTQ+ community and recognizes all who have and continue to advocate for LGBTQ+ lives, rights and visibility.  While this is an annual event at the university, this year will look a bit different, as the Office of LGBTQ* Resources has hired both a new director and assistant director.  Glenn Means, new director, believes the week will provide the campus community with an opportunity to learn about the office's resources and build community.  Prior to his new role, Means served in the UK College of Public Health as the admissions and recruitment coordinator, and before that, Means worked for the Legislative Research Commission, where he handled constituent service matters for the Commonwealth. Means also served as the development director for Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Bluegrass and the donor stewardship manager for Lexington Habitat for Humanity. Outside of his work experience, Means has volunteered with various LGBTQ* organizations. “Through all of this work, I have had the opportunity to educate, advocate and inform people on many issues that are important to our community, including mentorship, housing, healthcare, human rights and LGBTQ+ issues,” Means said. “It is a privilege to serve in this role to allow our students to have a safe space on campus and more importantly, a place for them to be themselves.” As new director, Means hopes to create a more inclusive, supportive and affirming campus environment for LGBTQ+ individuals. He is committed to championing diversity, equity and inclusion, and to creating a space where all individuals are respected, valued and celebrated for who they are. Atticus White, who will serve as the new assistant director, began their journey with the Office of LGBTQ* Resources back in 2018 during their sophomore year at UK where they were an intern in the office. After graduating in 2020, they held various retail and administrative jobs, but says nothing really stuck or felt fulfilling.  “I kept thinking back to the office and how wonderful it was to work in an environment that did so much work to support a community I love,” White said. “I sent an email to the director at the time and described my work with the office previously. I made my way into an administrative assistant position. About six months into my position, I became the only full-time staff in the office. I was suddenly in charge of managing everything. While it was extremely overwhelming, I knew that I had to stay to keep our doors open and continue to support our students. After all that hard work and strife, I had the opportunity to apply for and accept the assistant director position.” As the new assistant director, White wants to continue the great work the office has been doing since starting with the office but push for more visibility.  “Glenn and I have talked a lot about our visions for the office in the future. One of the biggest things we've discussed is how to make our office more visible. Many students might not even know our office exists on campus. We want to change that,” White said. “Students of any marginalized identity have specific needs that their peers might not understand or relate to. We must continue our work so that students know that they are welcome not just in our office, but on campus, in Lexington, in Kentucky, in the United States and in the world.” Through collaborative initiatives and outreach programs, starting with Campus Pride Week, Means and White plan on making an impact the campus community can see and feel.   Throughout Campus Pride Week, the office will host a series of events, including educational workshops, guest speakers and social gatherings, designed to promote LGBTQ+ visibility and acceptance. These activities are open to all members of the university community and serve as opportunities for dialogue, learning and celebration. “Our office has three core pillars that we strive to follow with all our work: education, advocacy and community building. Pride Week is a culmination of all these things,” White said. “I hope the campus community finds new ways to celebrate their queer and trans peers, to be better allies to them and to feel open to having discussions about identity that they may never have thought about before! Most cisgender and straight individuals may not have spent a lot of time thinking about those elements of their identity; events like these give the chance to challenge that and create the opportunity for more conversation. More than anything, I hope our campus community feels inspired by Pride Week. Pride is a beautiful time to spark new conversations, new creative endeavors and new opportunities for growth and change in our world.”  UKNow recently caught up with Means and White to discuss Campus Pride Week, their new roles and their visions for the future of the Office of LGBTQ* Resources.  "Behind the Blue" is available on iTunes, Google Play, and Spotify. LEXINGTON, Ky. (Oct. 12, 2023) – College students today are juggling an array of challenges, from coursework, relationships and adjustment to campus life to economic strain, social injustice and mass violence. As these challenges increase, so does the data on mental health in college students.  During the 2020–2021 school year, the CDC collected data from 373 college campuses nationwide. They found that more than 60% of college students met the criteria for at least one mental health problem. As a result, school leaders are starting to think outside the box about how to best support students' mental well-being. In honor of World Mental Health Day on Oct. 10, UKNow interviewed Kimberly Rufra, director of Prevention, Outreach, and Wellness Education Resources (POWER), to discuss all things mental well-being on the University of Kentucky's campus. A Kentucky Native, Rufra believes that we all share a collective responsibility in advancing the mental well-being of our students. “Throughout my journey, I have worked closely with students, which has deepened my understanding of their needs and further fueled my commitment to their holistic well-being,” said Rufra. “While many institutions provide well-being support for their students, the newly expanded Student Well-Being area at UK is a model many are trying to replicate. The opportunity to serve as the inaugural director for POWER is an honor.” POWER, housed in the Office of Student Success aims to provide accessible educational opportunities to promote healthy behaviors among students. They offer programs and resources to support students in managing stress, substance misuse, sexual health, sleep and mental health. Their goal is to be a one-stop location for all wellness needs.   “Our commitment to supporting students at every stage of their college experience is rooted in our desire to ensure their well-being and overall success,” said Rufra. “Mental illness can profoundly affect not only a person's mental and emotional state but also their physical health, social connections and livelihoods. Through initiatives like World Mental Health Day and similar observances, the University of Kentucky actively engages in several actions.”  These include: Promoting Prevention: We are committed to preventing mental health issues through awareness and proactive measures. Raising Awareness: We strive to increase understanding and knowledge about mental health to reduce stigma and misconceptions. Reducing Stigma: We work diligently to break down the barriers of stigma associated with mental health, fostering an environment where people can seek help without fear or judgment. Providing Support: Our focus is on offering support and resources to those in need, ensuring that no one faces mental health challenges alone. Training and Education: We prioritize the training and education of our community to equip individuals with the tools and knowledge to support one another effectively. Showcasing Coordinated Efforts: We are dedicated to demonstrating a unified front in addressing mental health issues, highlighting the collaborative efforts of various campus units and individuals. Recognizing Valuable Contributions: We acknowledge and honor those who play a crucial role in supporting our students and the overall well-being of the university community. World Mental Health Day serves as an incredible opportunity for people and communities to unite behind this year's theme ‘Mental health is a universal human right” to improve knowledge, raise awareness and drive actions that promote and protect everyone's mental health. While this day comes once every year, the university strives to prioritize mental health year-round and well into the future through units on campus like POWER.   “My vision for POWER is to establish ourselves as the go-to, reliable resource for health and well-being prevention matters,” said Rufra. “We aim to provide first-rate training on pertinent topics and aspire to set the standard that others in the SEC and higher education institutions seek to emulate. Our goal is to become a model for well-being and student prevention at the University of Kentucky, ensuring the implementation and revisions of our strategic plan as needed. Most importantly, we are committed to fulfilling our duty to empower members of the community with the skills to enhance their well-being.” To learn more about Kim Rufra's journey to UK, well-being resources on campus and how she will lead POWER into the future, listen to the Behind the Blue Above. Ralph has been researching the history of religion and the megalithic era for more than 40 years, and has brought many lost truths back to life. His eight books on revisionary theology claim to have rediscovered and identified all of the Old- and New-Testament events and characters within real history. With most of that history being based in Egypt. However, Ralph's first books explored the henges of Britain and pyramids of Egypt, and came to some equally unique and compelling conclusions. He claims that the megalithic monuments encode astronomical and cartographical information within their designs, which not only demonstrate the ancients had a great deal of technical knowledge, but also provide us with megalithic maps of the Earth. However, the precise meaning and import of those ancient maps is still unknown. - www.edfu-books.ukNow listen to all our XZBN shows, with our compliments go to: https://www.spreaker.com/user/xzoneradiotv AND NOW The ‘X' Zone TV Channel on SimulTV - www.simultv.comThe ‘X' Chronicles Newspaper - www.xchroniclesnewpaper.com

Project Sanctuary serves military and veteran families across the USA through therapeutic recreation and education at in-person family retreats, along with a holistic spectrum of services before, during and after. Project Sanctuary is one of the few organizations that addresses mental health for the entire military and veteran family, particularly the children.Ehle first learned of the unmet needs of military families 14 years ago when she volunteered as a registered nurse at a free clinic in Colorado. After 9/11, she tried to find the organizations that were taking care of military families, and upon discovering there were none, she created Project Sanctuary in the beautiful outdoor recreation paradise of Colorado. Project Sanctuary's programs and services are guided by the families it serves to address what they identify are critical needs. Like other organizations serving military and veteran families, Project Sanctuary has a "no wrong door" policy, so they will help to find solutions to unmet needs.ProjectSanctuary.USGivingHeartBeat@gmail.comOn Facebook and LinkedIn Donna Lee Valente and Instagram @donnaleevalenteGiving Heart Beat private Facebook Group coming very soon! With the pandemic teaching us all the value of slowing down and reconnecting with what truly matters, your host, Justin Mog, is thrilled to finally sit a spell in the virtual space with Shane Tedder, a true brother in arms in the struggle for sustainability. A native Kentuckian from Taylor Co., Shane has served as the University of Kentucky's Sustainability Coordinator since 2009. Together we explore sustainability’s role in our “new normal”; and how we can use this opportunity to respond and adapt not only to the pandemic, but to climate change, economic disparity, access to healthcare, and other challenges to sustainability. Shane dropped a lot of wonder references to poems and articles you will want to indulge in fully: - Kitty O’Meara – Untitled (And the people stayed home…) https://www.oprahmag.com/entertainment/a31747557/and-the-people-stayed-home-poem-kitty-omeara-interview/ - Shane’s UKNow piece including the quote about finding balance https://uknow.uky.edu/campus-news/uk-celebrates-50th-anniversary-earth-day-and-you-can-too-home - Sonya Renee Taylor poem, We will not go back to normal https://www.instagram.com/p/B-fc3ejAlvd/?hl=en More info: https://www.sonyareneetaylor.com/ - Prepare for the Ultimate Gaslighting (Jullio Vincent Gambuto) https://forge.medium.com/prepare-for-the-ultimate-gaslighting-6a8ce3f0a0e0 - Shane also recommends: Coronavirus Will Change the World Permanently. LEXINGTON, Ky. (March 11, 2019) – The University of Kentucky community is celebrating Women’s History Month. Throughout March, UKNow will feature the women — past and present — on whose shoulders we stand and whose hard work has made our achievements possible. With a combination of fierce resolve and deep compassion, UK women have left indelible marks on our university. Join us as we highlight these #WomenOfUK. As part of her early graduate work, Karen Clancy, interviewed 10 physicians and staff affiliated with the UK College of Medicine for the school’s fiftieth anniversary. One of her subjects, Dr. Jaqueline Noonan, was the first woman to chair a clinical department for the college. During the interview, Noonan talked about the ways in which women had changed not only the face of medicine, but how it was practiced.  That conversation led Clancy, a faculty member in the UK College of Health Sciences to ask, “how have women changed medicine?” To date, Clancy has interviewed 25 women who graduated from the UK College of Medicine between 1964 and 1975. She focused on this group because UK began admitting women to medical school in 1960, and she wanted to learn about their experiences prior to the adoption of Title IX. The “Women in White: Women Physicians Oral History Project” is a collection of oral histories featuring the perspectives and memories of ground-breaking women who completed medical school when only six to 10 percent of physicians were women. They were trailblazers who successfully pursued professional careers, made scientific contributions and brought a new dimension to medicine. They became leaders of medical associations, chairs of academic departments, discoverers, scientists and givers of compassionate and innovative care in their communities.  They told stories of barriers, triumphs and leadership. Dr. Jacqueline Noonan, a pediatric cardiologist went on to have a medical condition, Noonan Syndrome, named after her. Dr. Flora Johnson came the United States with her sisters when she was just 14 years old. She was told by countless people along her journey that she couldn’t make it in medical school and wouldn’t become a physician, she still practices family medicine in Alhambra, California. Dr. Ardis Hoven, one of the first women to serve as president of the American Medical Association and the first woman elected chair of the World Medical Association said, “Women have a special something that makes them ready to care and to lead. They’ve made medicine more personal, we go the extra mile.” On this week's episode of "Behind the Blue" you’ll hear these stories and more as we talk with Clancy about her project. The Women in White: Women Physicians Oral History Project is housed in the Louie B. Nunn Center for Oral History at the University of Kentucky.  Support for the collection was funded in part by the Arvle Turner Research Fund and the Kentucky Oral History Commission of the Kentucky Historical Society. Become a subscriber to receive new episodes of “Behind the Blue” each week. UK’s latest medical breakthroughs, research, artists and writers will be featured, along with the most important news impacting the university.
