The craft of filmmaking is as much about the soul as it is about the frame. In today's conversation, we sit down with Kansas Bowling, a maverick filmmaker who began charting her creative course at just 17 years old. As the first graduate of the Troma Institute for the Gifted, Kansas burst onto the scene with her debut feature, B.C. Butcher, a cavewoman slasher filmed on 16mm. From that bold beginning, her journey has only intensified, guided by a vision both rebellious and deeply personal.Kansas embodies the heart of artistic defiance, carving her path outside the confines of conventional education."I thought it would be easier to just make a movie than go to film school," she reflects, and her success vindicates her instincts. Her philosophy is one of doing: creating without overthinking, trusting her voice, and stepping into the arena without waiting for permission. Her work ethic shines through her portfolio, from feature films to over 20 music videos, all captured on her beloved 16mm film.Kansas opens a window into her creative process. For her, filmmaking is as much about confidence as it is about technical skill. "Directing is just telling people what you want to see. Everything else, you can learn along the way." This candid wisdom is refreshing, cutting through the mystique often associated with creative mastery. With humor and humility, she explains her preference for shooting on film, emphasizing its "timeless look" that digital can never replicate.Despite the beauty of her craft, Kansas has faced challenges that mirror the rawness of her stories. From navigating the loss of her Instagram account due to a controversial post, to fielding inappropriate offers as a female filmmaker, she moves forward with resilience. "People always send me horrible scripts where the whole thing is just a giant sex scene," she shares, laughing off the absurdity. Yet, she balances these experiences with genuine collaborations, such as her role in The Electra Complex, a project she describes as "the most well-written screenplay I've ever read."When asked about her influences, Kansas rattles off a list of cinematic gems: F for Fake by Orson Welles, Midnight Cowboy, and the Italian classic Don't Torture a Duckling. These films, she notes, have a unique authenticity—a quality she strives to infuse in her own work. For Kansas, filmmaking isn't about mimicking others; it's about harnessing inspiration while remaining true to her distinctive voice. As she wraps up production on her second feature, Kansas is also directing multiple music videos, preparing for a shoot in Miami, and starring in a major project. Her days are packed, yet her focus remains sharp. The secret to her productivity? She simply follows her passion. "If you see a film in your head, just go out and make it," she advises, encouraging budding creatives to trust their instincts and take action.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/indie-film-hustle-a-filmmaking-podcast--2664729/support.

Kansas Bowling, one of my all-time favorite actresses! I had an amazing time talking to her in regard to her role as 'Phoebe' in the movie "Murdercise" (2023). Movie premise: Phoebe is an obsessed fitness nerd who gets her big break on a sleazy workout video. After being ridiculed by her co-stars, Phoebe befriends a mafia princess wild child, who teaches her how to murder her way to the top. Kansas is such an amazing and talented actress; the casting director could not have chosen a better person to portray 'Phoebe' in the movie. She has definitely set the bar and standard for murder-exercise themed movies. For those that have not seen the movie "Murdercise", I highly suggest that you do. It's now streaming for free on Tubi Tv. If you would like to see her movie "Cuddly Toys" (2022), subscribe to her Patreon to see the stream before it hits the theaters. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/southjerseyhorror/message

Every once in a while I get sent a story that blows my mind. They story is a 17 year old 1st time director shoot and sells her first feature film (that was shot on 16mm) right out of the gate. How that hell does that happen? Well may I introduce you to Kansas Bowling, the director of the feature film B.C. Butcher. Inspired by the likes of Russ Meyer, Annette Funicello, and Roger Corman, Kansas and her friend Kenzie began writing a script in high school about a tribe of cavewomen being stalked by a prehistoric monster. Thus, the first prehistoric slasher was born! At only 17, Kansas directed, co-wrote, and funded her own feature film, entirely shot on 16mm, called “B.C. Butcher”.The film is unique in many ways, being a horror flick and a comedy, featuring live music, gore, gags, and campy historical inaccuracy. Because of this, immediately after shooting, “B.C. Butcher” caught the eye of Lloyd Kaufman (who will be a guest on the podcast in a few weeks), legendary producer/director and founder of Troma Entertainment Inc. Troma acquired the film for distribution and is now slated for a 2016 release.

Kansas @kansasbowling first got on my radar via her appearance in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. Afterwards, I did some digging on all the Manson girls. They're all super cool. But she is the coolest. She's more obsessed with horror movies than I am. Not just horror movies, but as we talked about, really anything. She made her first film with her own money (not rich people money, like waited tables money) at 17 years old. She tracked down her dream distributor and convinced them to put it out. She tracked down QT and convinced him to put her in OUATIH. And her forthcoming second feature, I'm confident, will top both of those. We talk a lot about Neil Breen too. Kansas is a born-and-raised-in-Hollywood writer and director. She wrote her first feature when she was only 15, and then went on to direct it for release at 17. The film, titled, B.C. Butcher, is a “pre-historic slasher” starring Kato Kaelin. B.C. Butcher was distributed by Troma Entertainment, and Kansas was inducted into the Troma Institute for Gifted Youth. Since then, she has directed 25 music videos for artists including Collapsing Scenery, Boyd Rice, Iggy Pop, and the Death Valley Girls. Aside from directing, Kansas also acts. She’s appeared in more than 30 projects, including the upcoming directorial debut of Glenn Danzig, and also Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time In Hollywood. She also starred in a short film series called 'Curious Females', which premiered on Refinery29 in 2017. The movie that Kansas has chosen to discuss on this week's episode is the 1968 freak-out fest by The Monkees called, Head. It's evident immediately that Kansas has a deep love for The Monkees and this film. She points out that The Monkees were very self aware in the film, as they comment on being "wind-up dolls" meant to distract people from the Vietnam war. She describes how her favorite films have a frenetic editing style, like Head, and also incorporate elements of "artistic non-fiction." Kansas covers some of her craziest experiences working on her own movies, like getting Kato Kaelin to appear in her film B.C. Butcher for free when she was only seventeen. Or like the time she called up Iggy Pop and asked if he'd be in a music video - and he said yes. If there's anything you should take away from this interview, it's that it never hurts to ask. You can see B.C. Butcher streaming online. If you haven't seen it yet, go watch Head. With April Wolfe and Kansas Bowling. Common traits of Mondo films include an emphasis on taboo subjects (such as death and sex), portrayals of foreign cultures, and staged sequences presented as genuine documentary footage. Over time, the films placed increasing emphasis on footage of the dead and dying (both real and fake).[00:13:15] - Favorite Movies and Directors-- Orson Welles - was an American actor, director, writer, and producer who worked in theatre, radio, and film. He is remembered for his innovative[1] work in all three: in theatre, most notably Caesar (1937), a Broadway adaptation of William Shakespeare's Julius Caesar; in radio, the legendary 1938 broadcast "The War of the Worlds"; and in film, Citizen Kane (1941), consistently ranked as one of the greatest films ever made.-- Don Juan (Or If Don Juan Were a Woman) (1973) - Jeanne lives in Paris and believes she is the reincarnation of Don Juan. Her friend Léporella tries to be Jeanne's conscience. What does Jeanne want?-- Midnight Cowboy - is a 1969 American drama film based on the 1965 novel of the same name by James Leo Herlihy. The film was written by Waldo Salt, directed by John Schlesinger, and stars Jon Voight and Dustin Hoffman.[00:15:19] - Kansas' tips for Directing[00:18:58] - Parting Thoughts-- Phil Spector - is an American record producer, musician, and songwriter who developed the Wall of Sound, a music production formula he described as a "Wagnerian" approach to rock and roll. Spector is considered the first auteur among musical artists for the unprecedented freedom and control he had over every phase of the recording process. Additionally, he helped engender the idea of the studio as its own distinct instrument. For these contributions, he is acknowledged as one of the most influential figures in pop music history. Later in his life, Spector became notorious for the 2003 death of actress Lana Clarkson, of which he was convicted of second degree murder.Music videos directed by Kansas BowlingContactKansas Bowling-- Official SiteDave Bullis— Official Site— Youtube— Twitter— Instagram— Facebook— Stage 32— LetterboxdSupport the Podcast1.
