#190 - Mat Kerekes (Citizen)

Behind the Vinyl

In this episode, we sit down with Mat Kerekes, the multifaceted frontman of Citizen, to dive deep into his solo work, his ever-evolving approach to music, and his unique balance of passion projects. Whether it's fronting an iconic band like Citizen, writing his own songs as a solo artist, or stepping into the role of a producer, Mat seems to do it all—and do it well. Mat's most recent solo release, To Dream of Something Wicked, dropped on Wax Bodega to rave reviews, and in this interview, we get a behind-the-scenes look at the making of the record. As Mat explains, the album was a labor of love that came together organically during a transitional time in his life. Written and recorded while moving back home, he unintentionally tapped into a sound that echoed his 2016 release Luna & the Wild Blue Everything—an album that established his solo sound. But with this latest project, Mat says, “This record is just me,” showing that he's not trying to emulate anyone or anything. He's comfortable with who he is, and that authenticity is reflected in the music. We also explore Mat's evolving relationship with Citizen, touching on the 10-year anniversary of Youth in 2023 (which, for Mat, marked a turning point in both his career and his personal life). He shares funny and heartfelt stories from those early days of the band, as well as his growth—from an insecure high school kid to a driven musician who balances his time between creating, performing, and pursuing other passions like Muay Thai and video games. As we discuss his solo career, Mat reveals that his solo music often happens during downtime from Citizen. While the band will always be his main focus, his solo work offers a refreshing outlet—one that allows him to write without the pressure of a larger team. In fact, his solo endeavors have been more low-key with little press or touring, but we can expect a short 2-3 week stretch in 2025, with Mat playing a handful of dates before moving on to the next phase of his career. If there's one thing that stands out about Mat, it's his ability to fully dedicate himself to whatever he does. Whether it's music, the gym, or martial arts, he gives it everything he's got. A self-proclaimed gym rat who's constantly training, Mat is someone who truly takes advantage of the 24 hours in a day, leaving no room for regrets. We had a blast chatting with Mat—his humor, honesty, and passion shine through in this conversation. Be sure to listen to the full interview for insights into Mat's creative process, his growth as both an artist and a person, and of course, some great stories from the road with Citizen.

To Dream the Impossible Dream With our current climate of opioid overuse and increasing opioid related deaths, alternatives to pure mu opioids are necessary. Buprenorphine, an important weapon in the arsenal for management of substance use disorder, is now rising in popularity as an opioid option for chronic pain. Evidence has demonstrated efficacy for various chronic pain conditions with less risk of adverse effects, such as the development of tolerance and respiratory depression. With increasing utilization, patients on chronic buprenorphine therapy are now more frequently being admitted to hospitals with severe acute pain due to surgery or trauma. A partial opioid agonist, buprenorphine has unique pharmacokinetic properties that differ from pure mu opioid agonists. Challenges with pain control can occur when acute pain treatment with a pure opioid is used in patients receiving buprenorphine due to its strong affinity to the mu receptor. This session will review the unique characteristics of buprenorphine and offer options for treatment of severe acute pain in patients receiving buprenorphine therapy. (Recorded at PAINWeek 2018)

How she turned her 60 minutes short into a feature. Going to festivals, winning awards and then getting picked up by a distributor in Texas who wanted to release the film as a feature so they shot an extra day. Meaning they had made a feature film in 7 days in total. Shooting six or seven scenes a day in many locations made it a tough but very rewarding shoot We discuss working with actors and giving them a background and having them on set in character all the time. Intimacy on set and blocking the actors so they could maximise on the natural light working with Adam Deacon during his issues off set and how the lighting and the set design can bring something spectacular to something bleak. In this episode of Confetti Park, we hear an excerpt from the enchanting fairy tale To Dream of Dancing: Desdemona's Dreams, Volume 1. Z.W. (Zachary) Mohr, the author, narrates for us a dream poem and an introduction to Desdemona. This is an excerpt from the first book in his original series co-created with illustrator Aaron Damon Porter. Desdemona is an 11 year old girl who is being raised by her two mysterious aunts and guardian teddy bear. When we first meet Desdemona, she is battling a mad maestro who wants to steal away her dream of dancing. When she awakes, her adventures continue….. From this introduction, we, along with Desdemona, will discover she can bring her dreams into the waking world at a time when everyone else is forgetting how to dream. Many more chapters of Desdemona's Dreams are to come from New Orleans-based co-creators Mohr and Porter. Currently, there is To Dream of Dancing: Desdemona's Dreams, Volume 1 and The Land of Mar: Desdemona's Dreams, Volume 2. The second book features pirates!!! The Desdemona's Dreams series offers a whirlwind of adventures in magical places, with inspiring and strong female characters. It also shows us the beauty of a child’s imagination, and how dreams shape the very world around us. Stay tuned for an interview with Zachary Mohr and Aaron Damon Porter on Confetti Park.

Live Tue. Jan. 31st, 2017 8pm EST on Para-X-Radio.com Andrieh Vitimus and Jason M. Colwell welcome Antero Alli back for a second week, because we are so impressed by his work.  Antero will be talking to us about his work on The Eight-Circuit Brain. The Eight-Circuit Brain advances and expands the material in Alli’s groundbreaking book, Angel Tech, a compendium of techniques and practical applications based on Dr. Timothy Leary’s 8-Circuit Brain model. After more than twenty years of research and experimentation, Antero’s earlier findings are significantly updated and enriched in this new body of work. In 1977 Antero was inspired by the Paratheatre of Jerzy Grotowski and over the next four decades, he combined his early theatre experience and training (see below) towards the creation of his own paratheatre medium — as documented in his book, “Towards an Archeology of the Soul” (Vertical Pool, 2003), in four videos (1992-2012), and in academia by Nicoletta Isar, Professor at the Institute of Art History,Copenhagen University (2008). Between 1975 and 2005, Antero wrote, directed, produced and performed in numerous experimental theatre productions. In 2005, Antero stopped creating theatre and wrote and directed a series of feature-length art films — including “The Greater Circulation” (2005; 93 min) a critically acclaimed cinematic treatment of Rainer Maria Rilke’s “Requiem for a Friend“, “The Invisible Forest” (2008; 111 min) featuring the radical ideas of French Surrealist, Antonin Artaud, “To Dream of Falling Upwards“(2011; 120 min), exploring the occult worlds of rural and urban sorcery and “The Book of Jane” (2013; 115 min.), an urban fable of Feminine initiation. In late 2015 Antero ended his 23-year era of filmmaking and returned to his roots in experimental theatre in Portland Oregon where he also continues his paratheatre group work. Live Tue. Deep Geeking: To Dream in the City of Sorrows is Book #9 in the original series of novels, and one of the two from that series that have been acknowledged as canon. Talk about the book ranges from the cover art, the story arcs for Sinclair, Marcus, Catherine and Neroon, the accuracy of the character "voices", the nagging feeling that this book's pacing was too fast, and very likely could have been a much better book if it had been allowed to be longer, and more.
