Frank Murphy is joined by his friend Mitch Moore, who is a freelance writer.  Mitch likes to solve the Sunday and Monday crossword puzzles. Both he and Frank try to solve the Monday puzzle as fast as possible. Frank has broken the five-minute barrier but Mitch has yet to go “sub 5.”  Mitch and his wife went to Glacier National Park and Yellowstone National Park. They spent several days at Yellowstone. Frank and his wife would like to go back and spend more than a day at Yellowstone.  Frank and Jere visited Tom Kent, one of Frank's radio mentors, in Cleveland on the day after the eclipse in April. Tom died of cancer in June. On Tom's birthday in August, hundreds of his Facebook friends wished him a happy birthday, obviously unaware that he had died.  This episode is sponsored by BoneZones.com (don't forget the S). Buy books and other merchandise autographed by Body Farm founder Dr. Bill Bass at https://bonezones.com/ including Body Farm t-shirts. Contact BoneZones to hire Frank to give a presentation about Dr. Bass and the Body Farm.  Jere attempted to take two grandsons to McKay's used bookstore but it happened to be the same day as the store's anniversary. The store was overrun with fans trying to win prizes by driving to all five McKay's stores in North Carolina and Tennessee.  Mitch points out that the store used to be known as McKay Books and that in the South, people tend to add an S to store names like Kroger, Walmart, and others.  Mitch recently finished the first draft of a book. He set the book in rural Arkansas during the same time period that he was growing up there.  Frank had a poster printed using the image of an East Tennessee PBS monthly program guide that included him among some actual celebrities.  Every time Frank buys a package of 700 coffee filters, he wonders if he will be able to use them all.  The Tennessee Valley Fair asked Frank and Becca James to emcee the Fair Food Throwdown on Saturday, September 7 and the Sweet Goodness Doughnut Challenge on Thursday, September 12, 2024.  Frank used bonus points to get a free Frappuccino but rather than drink it, he saved it in the freezer. A couple of weeks later he bought a Frappuccino to earn 75 bonus points. He put it in the freezer to save it for another day and then realized the first one was still there.  Frank's grandson Artie chastised him for not saying “excuse me” after a gastrointestinal outburst. Frank started saying “Pardon me boys, is that the Chattanooga Choo Choo” every time it happened again. Frank explained the reference, which made Artie want to watch The Glenn Miller Story starring James Stewart.  Frank will be checking in the audience members at Marble City Opera's “Tenors, Tuxedos, and Stalactites” concert on Saturday, August 17, 2024. The gate opens at 4:00 p.m. and the one-hour concert starts at 5:00 p.m. Get tickets at https://www.marblecityopera.com/tickets before they sell out.  Mitch is the drummer in an ‘80s cover band called Vinyl Tap. The band will perform at Ale' Rae's, 937 N. The Cognitive Crucible is a forum that presents different perspectives and emerging thought leadership related to the information environment. The opinions expressed by guests are their own, and do not necessarily reflect the views of or endorsement by the Information Professionals Association. During this episode, Tom Kent returns to the Cognitive Crucible to discuss his latest book: How Russia Loses: Hubris and Miscalculation in Putin's Kremlin. Vladimir Putin's efforts to build influence abroad have succeeded in many places, leading some to see him as a master tactician whose skills are practically unbeatable. “How Russia Loses” takes a more skeptical approach, arguing that Russian influence operations have also been plagued by overconfidence and misjudgments, often repeating themselves in case after case. Thomas Kent's book looks at six case studies where Russian fortunes suffered temporary or long-term reversals, and the reasons for those setbacks – from Russia's own weaknesses to nimble responses by pro-democracy actors. The book spans Russian operations in Ukraine, Ecuador, South Africa and North Macedonia, as well as Moscow's efforts to promote the Nordstream 2 pipeline and its Sputnik COVID vaccine. Kent offers an extensive analysis of common threads that have weakened Russian influence operations, and how the West can use this knowledge to respond more effectively to future efforts by Moscow. This series, from 1983, gave me a chance to ponder issues, concerning the power and responsibility of journalistic media, that had preoccupied me every since I had begun working for CBC Radio twelve years before. Two "hooks" provided the occasion. The first was the calling of a Royal Commission to consider the problem of growing monopoly in the newspaper business. This was the Kent Commission, after commissioner Tom Kent, which reported in 1981. The second was the publication, in 1980, of the book which gave the series its title, Anthony Smith's The Geo-Politics of Information, a book on the clamour in what was then generally called the Third World for a New World Information Order, so-called, one not totally dominated by Western media. Both of these question are addressed - the history (and myth) of the free press in Part One, the New World Information Order debate in Part Two - but the series also allowed me to go further. Part Three looks at foreign news and draws heavily on the work of Noam Chomsky and Edward Said. Chomsky had recently published, with Edward Herman, a two volume work called The Political Economy of Human Rights, which had had a huge influence in shaping my view of media. In these books Chomsky and Herman show how a nominally free press faithfully reproduces what they call "imperial ideology." Said, for his part, had just brought out Covering Islam, a book in which he brought the thesis of his celebrated Orientalism into the present with a consideration of contemporary news coverage of Islamic countries. The final show of the set focused on the news industry's "mode of production" and the ways in which it shapes its finished product. One notable thing about this series was the number of prominent scholars in the field who agreed to take part. I have mentioned Chomsky and Said, but there was also Stuart Hall, James Curran, Gaye Tuchman, Lewis Lapham, Todd Gitlin and many others. Another was the strength of the interviews I recorded for the series, which led me into my first questioning of the documentary format in which I was then working. Documentaries have narrative requirements which tend to dictate how the component interviews will be edited. Mad Magazine used to joke, in a satire on the New York Times famous slogan, "all the news thats fit to print," that it presented "all the news that fits the print"; and documentaries are the same. The "clips" that will be cut out of the interviews will be those that fit the narrative requirements of the documentary. This generally precludes any sustained attention to the individual character or context of the thinkers who are quoted. Reflection on this issue led to the approach that I generally took in my work for Ideas after 1990 in which my subjects, wherever possible, were presented one-at-a-time and in depth. The participants in the series were as follows:Part One: Paul Rutherford, James Curran, Anthony Smith, Stuart Hall, Lewis Lapham, Carman Cumming, Todd GitlinPart Two: Juan Somavia, Rohan Samarajiva, Herbert Schiller, Anthony Smith, Tom McPhail, Bill Harley, Barry ZwickerPart Three: Edward Said, Stuart Hall, Noam Chomsky, James Aronson, Tom KentPart Four: Stuart Hall, Lewis Lapham, Gaye Tuchman, James Curran,Todd Gitlin, Carman Cumming, Paul Rutherford, Jeremy Wilson, Noam ChomskyA transcript of the series is available on the Transcripts page of the site.

John McKelvie was born in Scotland just over 66 years ago and has been writing poems songs and stories for the more than 50 years. This talent was recognised by his English teacher at school and when he was naughty, which he often was, instead of getting one hundred lines, he was made to write one hundred words as a poem and read it to the class. He developed his story- telling making up absurd adventure tales for his nieces and nephews and later his own children. On graduating he moved to London to work as a dustman where he also became involved with poetry and theatre before moving to Melbourne in 1987. He was delighted to find Melbourne had even more poetry venues than London and obtained a job in superannuation. His work has been published in a number of anthologies including, Best Australian Poems. At the urging of his friend Tom Kent he produced a volume, Hopscotch, which Tom edited and published. He has been a featured reader and singer at a number of poetry venues and considers the Dan to be his Saturday afternoon home. His work can be humorous, satirical, social, environmental, political or romantic and he is still sometimes naughty.
