TREY GUNN is a touch guitar/composer widely known for his work with KING CRIMSON and currently, TU-NER. He joins me on The ProgCast for a chat about his history with Robert Fripp's League of Guitarists beginnings, Sylvian/Fripp, and of course his time playing with King Crimson and the KC score books that Trey has been spearheading. This is the first of a two-part interview.
Hello everyone and welcome to another edition of Interviewing the Legends I'm your host Ray Shasho. Legendary drummer Michael Shrieve announces the much-anticipated release of his album, “Drums of Compassion,” set to drop on May 24, 2024 on Trey Gunn's innovative label, 7D Media. This album is a testament to Shrieve's artistic journey, encapsulating over fifty years of musical exploration and collaboration with some of the most revered names in the industry. “Drums of Compassion” is not merely an album; it's an odyssey that began two decades ago inspired by the Dalai Lama's call for a Time of Compassion. The album boasts an ensemble of musical virtuosos, and their collective genius creates a tapestry of rhythmic brilliance that transcends conventional music boundaries, offering listeners an immersive sonic experience. Shrieve's collaboration with Soundmaster Jeff Greinke lays the foundation of the album with ambient, space-evoking melodies that serve as a backdrop to the dynamic percussive elements. Officially released on May 24, 2024. An as a very wise man once said … "MUSIC PROMPTS US TO RESPOND WITH OPEN-HEARTEDNESS INSTEAD OF JUDGMENT. IT USHERS US TO A HIGHER PLACE FROM WHERE WE CAN SEE BEYOND DISTRACTIONS TO WHAT IS TRUE AND GOOD AND LASTING." Singer/Songwriter Releases New Album Featuring Living Colour's Vernon Reid#newmusic #newalbum #singersongwriter #avantgardemusic #soulmusic Percy Howard, a NorCal based singer-songwriter and product of the New York no-wave avant-garde, has performed and or toured with members of Living Colour, King Crimson, Swans, Guns N' Roses (Buckethead), Oxbow, Henry Cow, This Heat, and Brand X. Percy has also shared European festival stages with Brazilian music legend Caetano Veloso and ambient pioneer Stephan Micus.Percy is the generator of the Meridiem project, which has included collaborative input from Bill Laswell, Vernon Reid, Charles Hayward, Trey Gunn, Fred Frith, Robert Rich, Buckethead, Jarboe, Happy Rhodes, and Jill Tracy, amongst others. Percy's Genre-defying mix of rock, jazz, soul and classical influences have drawn critical attention and praise from all over the planet. Percy has recently started the record label Necessary Angel, which he sees as an archival entity whose sole mission is to spread as much sonic beauty across the world as possible.Influenced by the Laurel Canyon Sound, Bowie, Steely Dan, Richie Havens, and Scott Walker, but created in the context of my own experience, Percy's new album “The Stars and The Well” is unabashedly nostalgic, consumed with Romance and unafraid of the fragility of love. It's a retrospective of the impact of love in my life, in all its forms… From the heights (The Stars) to the depths (The Well). To purchase: https://7dmedia.com/percy-howard-the-stars-the-wellBandcamp: https://percy-howard.bandcamp.com/album/the-stars-the-wellInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/percyhowardmusic/Thanks for tuning in, please be sure to click that subscribe button and give this a thumbs up!!Email: thevibesbroadcast@gmail.comInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/listen_to_the_vibes_/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thevibesbroadcastnetworkLinktree: https://linktr.ee/the_vibes_broadcastTikTok: https://vm.tiktok.com/ZMeuTVRv2/Twitter: https://twitter.com/TheVibesBrdcstTruth: https://truthsocial.com/@KoyoteFor all our social media and other links, go to: Linktree: https://linktr.ee/the_vibes_broadcastPlease subscribe, like, and share!

“Supergroup” is a tired, overused term in music. However, when musical aces like guitarist https://www.premierguitar.com/artists/guthrie-govan-the-linguist (Guthrie Govan), bassist Bryan Beller, and drummer Marco Minnemann jam… they are an unrivaled force of nature. Each player has a remarkable resume: Govan has worked with https://www.premierguitar.com/artists/guitarists/porcupine-tree (Steven Wilson), Hans Zimmer, and Asia; Beller with https://www.premierguitar.com/artists/guitarists/joe-satriani (Satriani), https://www.premierguitar.com/artists/guitarists/steve-vai (Vai), https://www.premierguitar.com/artists/brendon-small-sh-t-i-couldnt-do-a-year-ago (Dethklok), and https://www.premierguitar.com/gear/rig-rundown-dweezil-zappa (Dweezil Zappa); and Minnemann with the Mute Gods, Trey Gunn, H-Blockx, and Mike Keneally—among many others. What makes a supergroup novel is generally the collective's previous endeavors and collaborations. The magic with these three cats is that their superpowers combine to become a flashy and fluent highflying act. Formed unceremoniously for a performance at the 2011 Anaheim NAMM Show, this tremendously talented trio has released nine albums (five studio and four live) in 11 years. The attraction for both the audience and the band is the same: variety. In any given performance, you can hear them shift from Return to Forever to https://www.premierguitar.com/gear/rig-rundown-yes-steve-howe-and-chris-squire (Yes) to https://www.premierguitar.com/gear/rig-rundown-king-crimsons-robert-fripp (King Crimson) to https://www.premierguitar.com/videos/the-big-5/steve-vai (Vai) to https://www.premierguitar.com/videos/rig-rundowns/tom-morello (Rage) to Funkadelic to moments of deranged Zappa. “We've been a pretty strange, eclectic band to begin with, as the music we do tips our hats to a lot of different styles,” notes Govan. “All I've ever done over the years I've been playing guitar is to just listen to everything around me and absorb the aspects of it that I liked. I've never felt an urge to specialize. I'm happy to keep combining whatever flavorings I like and rolling them all together.” The result: These three executive chefs put on a spicy clinic that would even please Gordon Ramsay. The Aristocrats' headlining 2022 run landed at Nashville's City Winery on July 27. Before the musical throwdown commenced, PG's Chris Kies hosted conversations that covered Beller's booming setup, including some old favorites and recovered friends (via social-media sleuthing), while Govan focused on detailing the slight-but-crucial changes to his signature Charvel and explaining his live tonal evolution—modernized with an all-encompassing Fractal Audio unit. Originally from Buenos Aires, Argentina, guitarist/composer Alex Anthony Faide has a decades-long international reputation for being the secret weapon in rock recordings, arrangements, and stage productions in Europe and Latin America. On this episode of Big Blend Radio, he discusses his music and long-awaited solo record – “Particles of the Infinite” – a display of guitar pyrotechnics in nine parts, that releases on March 18, 2022, on Trey Gunn's label 7d Media. Inspired by and developed from concepts found in songs such as King Crimson's “Fracture” and “Lark's Tongues in Aspic,” Faide takes the work beyond the stratosphere into the mirror dimension to find something completely his own. In the words of his mentor Robert Fripp, “AAF plays my guitar parts better than I do.” More at: https://alexanthonyfaide.bandcamp.com/album/particles-of-the-infinite Special thanks to the National Parks Arts Foundation - https://www.nationalparksartsfoundation.org/

With at 15 solo records (and counting) under his belt Trey shows no signs of slowing down. In fact, he's only just getting going. After watching Trey's lecture on Youtube on developing your own voice (see below for link) I was inspired enough to contact him for some personal sessions. We talk about all this and much more in this episode- thanks for listening!Check out Trey's Music hereHere is the video I reference in the podcast- Trey Gunn on Original VoiceTrey's Website- Trey Gunn.comSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/the-riff-raff-with-shane-theriot/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
Gabriel Lucas Riccio is a vocalist, composer, producer, multi-instrumentalist, transcriber, and engraver from Salisbury, MD, currently residing in Chicago, IL. You can find a whole lot more about him on his website (TheGabrielConstruct.com). He was so much fun to talk to that we’ve split this conversation up into two episodes. This week we bring you the second half of our conversation. About 7 years ago, Gabe uploaded a transcription of King Crimson’s “The ConstruKction of Light” to YouTube [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6kd5kG4847I], completing his senior comprehensive exams. A few hours later, a positive comment from Trey Gunn appeared & the two connected. Gabe went on to transcribe a book for Trey Gunn (and another for The Stick Men) before tackling King Crimson. With a team of proofreaders & Trey’s assistance, the completed “King Crimson: The Discipline Era” is now available. Continuing Ian Hacking’s The Social Construction of What (1999) and Peter Berger's “Religion and World Construction" (1967). We break down Hacking's typology of construction arguments: Are they exploring where our ideas came from or trying to change things? Are they trying to state facts about nature vs. nurture or essentially political solicitations for us to reconceptualize in healthier ways? Plus, more about the supposed divide between science wars and the culture wars and Berger's picture of the nomos (custom) defining what it is for us to live a meaningful life. Jerry Marotta is one of the most prolific drummers in the history of modern music. He has played on literally hundreds of records and has worked with acts such as Orleans, Hall & Oates, The Indigo Girls, Stackridge, Marshall Crenshaw, The Dream Academy, Tears For Fears, Elvis Costello, Paul McCartney, and many, many more. Of particular note to Progressive Rock music fans is his association with Peter Gabriel, Tony Levin, and Trey Gunn of King Crimson, who now works with Jerry in The Security Project. Jerry is my esteemed guest on this week's Prog-Watch, and he talks at length about working with the Prog icons just mentioned, and what he is up to now. Along the way we will hear lots of great music from the progressive end of his resume.
Variety is on tap for this week's Prog-Watch! We'll hear new music from Katre, The Franky Valentyn Project, Steven Wilson, Galahad, Marillion, and Kim Seviour, along with great stuff from Trey Gunn, Jeff Berlin, and the Stick Men! I'll also send out a couple of listener dedications by Gravy Train and Genesis, and Dr. Rob Fisher will be taking us on another voyage of Progressive Discovery, with the Spanish project Kant Freud Kafka!

The Security Project, featuring members of King Crimson, Shriekback and Peter Gabriel’s original band bring the genre-less masterpieces of Peter Gabriel into the 21st Century on their new live album “Live 1”. Seattle-based Trey Gunn and Michael Cozzi join esteemed drummer Jerry Marotta and NY keyboardist David Jameson to harness the core of these songs. Added to the pedigree of these players is the voice of Brian Cummins, whose interpretations add haunting authenticity to the immaculate arrangements. These live recordings are a first – no one has dared take on Peter Gabriel’s material at this level before!
