Tony Levin's love of the bass guitar began when he was just ten years old, when his focus was classical music and performing on a double bass - and he never looked back. His classical training transitioned to rock and jazz, and his reputation as an A-list session bassist filtered throughout the music industry. Of course, one of Tony's primary gigs has been holding down the bass chair for Peter Gabriel since the late ‘70s, performing on nearly all of Peter's recordings and tours. However, his resume is extensive, having performed with John Lennon, Stevie Nicks, Pink Floyd, Paul Simon, Lou Reed, Buddy Rich, David Bowie, and many other icons in the music industry, along with being a member of Stick Men and Liquid Tension Experiment. Tony has a brand new album set to release on September 13 titled "Bringing it Down to the Bass". He's currently rehearsing for the upcoming BEAT tour: A supergroup that also includes Steve Vai, Adrian Belew, and Tool drummer Danny Carey, who will perform music from the three King Crimson albums that were released in the '80s. Here to talk to us about these new projects and his extensive career is none other than Tony Levin.
Pat has been a session drummer since the mid '70s, was a founding member of Mr. Mister in the '80s, and played in all line-ups of King Crimson since '94. He's also a producer and no stranger to electronics. We discuss "31" by Tu-Ner from T-1 Contact Information (2023), "Flinch" by TUNER from Totem (2005), "Life Goes On" by Mr. Mister from I Wear the Face (1984), and we conclude by listening to "Prog Noir" by Stick Men (2016). Intro: "Vroom Vroom" by King Crimson from Thrak (1995). Hear more Nakedly Examined Music. Support us on Patreon.

Today is all about sticks! Well. Not really. We're covering a bizarre and obscure cryptid called the Stick Man. And it sounds exactly like what it is. People have witnessed these 2D stick figure people all over the world, going back to ancient times. Then, in our second segment, we talk about the Stick Indians of the Pacific Northwest. For the official start of our SIXTH season, musician/composer/producer/instrument designer Markus Reuter brings us an album that grabbed onto his psyche as a teenager in Germany and STILL captivates him over 30 years later: 'Thunder and Consolation' by Bradford, Yorkshire band New Model Army. Led by singer/songwriter Justin Sullivan, the band creates hard-to-classify musical soundscapes that perfectly compliment Sullivan's biting lyrics about navigating one's family, finding your tribe and coming to terms with the often harsh realities of human nature: "These tracks stretch out before me - the ones you left behind What I want and what I feel - it's yours, yours, not mine" Songs featured in this episode: Green and Grey - New Model Army (Live Köln, 2006); River of Things - Markus Reuter (featuring Fabio Trentini and Asaf Sirkis); Tentacles - Stick Men; 51st State, 125 MPH - New Model Army; Schubert Ständchen (Serenade) - Peter Schreier; Ambition, Love Songs - New Model Army; Layla - Derek and the Dominos; Lovesong - The Cure; I Love The World, Vanity, Stupid Questions, 225, Inheritance, Green and Grey, Green and Grey (Live Rockpalast, 2006), The Ballad of Bodmin Pill, Family, Family Life, Vagabonds - New Model Army; 51st State of America - The Shakes; Archway Towers - New Model Army; One Cut Suffices - Markus Reuter (featuring Fabio Trentini and Asaf Sirkis)

In October of 2021, an email arrived in the Barely Human inbox titled 'Error Filled Podcast.' Normally we might have looked past it, mistakes being mistakes, except that it came from Clarke Blacker of Stick Men With Ray Guns: the band profiled as the Butthole Surfers' significantly more underground parallel in BH008. Clarke outlined a number of mistakes we had made, from incorrectly naming band members, to errors in dates and the approach of the episode... so after emailing back and forth for a few weeks, we decided to record an interview that goes back over the Stick Men With Ray Guns story properly. The introduction features producer Jason L'Ecuyer and writer/host Max Easton discussing how the errors came to be and reflecting on the series (which wrapped in April of 2020 as the first wave of COVID-19 descended.) The interview with Clarke begins at 00:15:30 and covers ground ranging from how Clarke arrived in the world of Texas punk, the formation of Stick Men With Ray Guns; the band's troubles with recording; the life of Bobby Soxx and its controversies; the band's philosophy, approach and legacy; and Clarke's more recent music projects. Listen to Clarke Blacker's 'Hear Us Through the Hole in Thin Air' at https://clarkeblacker.bandcamp.com/album/hear-us-through-the-hole-in-thin-air or on Clarke's YouTube channel at https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC_nLgtn8u8vB3GCmRjWdz1w. David Cross is best known as a member of King Crimson on the “Larks' Tongues in Aspic” and “Starless and Bible Black” albums. He also leads the David Cross Band and has been a guest artist, recording and performing live with a number of international groups including Stick Men. Andrew Keeling is a composer and musician whose contemporary classical works have been internationally acclaimed. Besides working with David Cross he has also orchestrated the music of Robert Fripp (The Wine of Silence), arranged for Tim Bowness (Abandoned Dancehall Dreams) as well as playing with alt-rock band, The Gong Farmers. Keeling has also written a series of Musical Guides exploring the music of such bands as King Crimson. “October is Marigold” is the second album from David Cross (electric violin) and Andrew Keeling (flute) and it is the third to appear on Noisy Records' ‘Electric Chamber Music' label. Perhaps more strikingly than its predecessors, this recording epitomizes the aims of that label to present music designed for an intimate setting which makes use of musical and electronic techniques used in rock. Cross and Keeling's “English Sun” was released in 2009 (followed by a handful of gigs) and the duo recorded much of “October is Marigold” in the same year. These tracks lay dormant until 2020 when work recommenced on the new album. Welcome to another episode of Believing the Bizarre. This week, we discuss a cryptid, which is what it's technically known as - but we have our questions, called the Black Stickman Phenomena. Essentially, this entity is exactly how it sounds, a super tall, stick figure-like entity with no face, eyes, nose, or facial features. Some say they are inter-dimensional beings while some believe they are ancient alien beings. Whatever they are, they have gathered a lot of encounters over the years. But, are they believable? A cool rendition of “Sweepstakes” in an indoor overpass. I would absolutely have loved to see a double bill of CA & Už Jsme Doma in Madison, mentioned by OG as his first meeting of the bandleader. Here's the music video for “Mariana”. They should have an album pick on a future OoO episode. OG also mentioned Charlie Looker , Psalm Zero, and Extra Life. Mike Watt as a collaborator & jamming partner also comes up. Pitchfork's reviewer does a good, thorough job with CA, comparing them both aptly and humorously to Need New Body. “Feeding Frenzy” is compared to the experimental yelling (& apparently storytelling) album by Liars, “They Were Wrong, So We Drowned.” The performance that led me to Pele for a jazz connection is “The Mind of Minolta”. Markus Reuter is a guitarist and composer based in Berlin, Germany. He has recorded extensively as a solo artist and with acts such as Tuner, Stick Men and The Crimson ProjeKct. In addition to his work in what might be described as rock music, he has written compositions for the classical world, including Todmorden 513 and His Last Decade .
Drumming legend Pat Mastelotto (King Crimson, O.R.k., Stick Men etc.) teamed up with his wife Deborah Mastelotto and a whole host of musicians from the Three of a Perfect Pair Music Masters Camp to arrange and record "The Romantics Guide to King Crimson". Reason enough to give them a call to talk about Lavender Cheesecake, Lounge Prog and restroom lines at Crimson concerts. All of that and more, only on Episode 110 of the Progcast. Gabriel Lucas Riccio is a vocalist, composer, producer, multi-instrumentalist, transcriber, and engraver from Salisbury, MD, currently residing in Chicago, IL. You can find a whole lot more about him on his website (TheGabrielConstruct.com). He was so much fun to talk to that we’ve split this conversation up into two episodes. This week we bring you the second half of our conversation. About 7 years ago, Gabe uploaded a transcription of King Crimson’s “The ConstruKction of Light” to YouTube [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6kd5kG4847I], completing his senior comprehensive exams. A few hours later, a positive comment from Trey Gunn appeared & the two connected. Gabe went on to transcribe a book for Trey Gunn (and another for The Stick Men) before tackling King Crimson. With a team of proofreaders & Trey’s assistance, the completed “King Crimson: The Discipline Era” is now available. It includes all three 1980s Crimson records: “Discipline”, “Beat” & “Three of a Perfect Pair”. We really get into the weeds on this one & it is absolutely delightful (hope you agree)!*Unfortunately it’s recently sold out, but we believe more will be coming in the near future…so keep an eye out if you’re interested!Thank you again Gabe for coming on the show & have a great week everyone!Songs:King Crimson - Neal & Jack & MeKing Crimson - Dig Me

Lurking on the fringes of paranormal lore for decades—and seemingly hiding in plain sight all around us—encounters with the ominous, char black, impossibly thin beings known as Stick Men have steadily been on the rise; leaving terrified witnesses to wonder if they've seen a specter, an alien, an inter-dimensional entity… or something far more sinister. The humble, soft-spoken, vulnerable and sincere manner in which you will hear Markus Reuter speak on this podcast might leave you surprised when you figure out it comes from an artist who spent the past decade on the road with living legends like Tony Levin and Pat Mastelotto (amidst many others) on multiple continents performing for audiences who flock to hear them play a form of music based on a process an entire generation possibly doesn't even know exists. A qualified Psychologist, Reuter's work as recording artist, solo performer and collaborator spans (and frequently fuses) electrophonic loop music, contemporary classical music, progressive and art rock, industrial music, world jazz, jazz fusion, pop songs and pure improvisation. Over the course of a two-decade career, he has been a member of and collaborator with multiple bands, ensembles and projects (including centrozoon, Stick Men, Tuner, The Crimson ProjeKct, Europa String Choir, Gary Husband and Devin Townsend) as well as a solo artist. Markus is also an in-demand creativity coach and music instructor. That Record Got Me High were very fortunate this week to have a guest who has experienced the music from a close proximity to the source. Touch guitarist Markus Reuter (centrozoon, Europa String Choir, Tuner, Stick Men, The Crimson ProjeKct, et. al)joined us by phone from Germany to "preach the gospel" about King Crimson's "Discipline," a life-changing work for Markus, and Barry as well. It remains consistent.
Hey everyone! Sorry for the delay. As you will be able to tell, we ran into some big time technical issues 5 seconds before recording, so instead of bailing, we took an extra day to clean up what we got. This week, we talk about the ever freaky phenomenon of the Stick Men. What? No! But yes! People have been reporting seeing thin, 2D stick men for a lot longer than you’d might think as well! Thanks for listening and stay safe! Stick Ghost Video Get A TWC Shirt Visit Our Patreon
For several decades people have reported seeing strange "Black Stick Men" walking around in our world. Described as having thin stick like limbs and elongated bodies these entities look as if they leaped right out of a drawing. Not to be confused with shadow people these entities appear as 2-dimensional stick figures that almost disappear when they turn sideways. Marcus and Vic attempt to break down why these entities look the way they do and try to get to the bottom of where they come from. Also discussed is the breaking news from the UFO community. On May 13, 2020 the people of Rio de Janeiro reported seeing strange blue lights in the sky, until military helicopters shot one of the UFOs down. With the internet buzzing Marcus and Vic tell you the most recent developments regarding this breaking UFO case. The extended portion of the show is EXCLUSIVE to our patrons. Marcus and Vic discuss the legend of The Rock Apes, also known as the Batututs of Vietnam. During the Vietnam War American soldiers reported stories of man sized creatures covered in fur. These creatures would hurl rocks at American and enemy troops. Grizzly stories of these creatures going on rampages made even the most steadfast solider afraid to enter the jungle. From the English post-punk response discussed last episode we move to Texas in Episode 8, to find two anti-punk agitators of the 1980s. In Butthole Surfers, we find an unhinged band who took the absurdism and hallucinogens of the '60s counter-culture, and painted the punk and hardcore underground with it. When they then hit the '90s, signed to a major label, scored a hit with 'Pepper,' and sued the DIY label who made them...they ended up as DIY anti-christs. Later in the episode, we look at their close friends Stick Men With Ray Guns: a mirror image of the Surfers who never left Texas, never released a record in their time, and were left to fade into obscurity alongside their troubled frontperson Bobby Soxx. Hello Randomers and Randomites. Live, from your dreams (sorry about that), we're back! And we have guests. MJ Savastano and Alexus Maxam (as heard in previous podcasts such as the theater remote for The Heavy Entertainment Show) are joining us in studio to talk about one of our all time favorite authors, Neil Gaiman. We discuss Sandman, some of his novels and short stories and because we're the Carnival of Randomness, we make ties to other movies, TV shows and Doctor Who. And for those that stuck with us, Death was here but remained silent. Because reasons. Also, news from one of our dear friends Caitlin Yarsky, she of "Coyotes" fame. She's got a new project coming out called "HEY, AMATEUR!" Below is a link to their Kickstarter if you'd like to support it and look for it in February of 2020. Only 5 days left (as of Monday August 26, 2019) to help! Markus Reuter is quite an amazing musician. He's already been part of several releases this year (including an amazing collaboration with Robert Rich), but he's also putting out interesting solo work, is touring right now with Stick Men, continues to develop his touch guitar technique - and has time to talk to me for the podcast. And we had a fascinating chat, where we talked about everything from the development of the U8 guitar, to fan engagement through his new subscription project, and through to some ideas about how technique and music is taught to new students. Markus goes beyond the normal 'advanced guitar' thing; he transcends the instrument and even any specific musical idiom to embody music creation. Maybe that's why his model for the future, through an artist subscription, is perfect for him: it's a great opportunity to have people move with you through styles, concepts and techniques as you develop them without having to tightly restrict oneself to a specific sub-genre. In our chat, we get into a lot of things about the creation of his work, and especially on how he finds useful ways to integrate his own strong voice into collaborative working situations. Having him describe his intuitions about the work and the world is an awesome insight into his brain. If you haven't checked out his site yet, you need to do it: http://www.markusreuter.com/. Find out more about him, the broad variety of his work, and his vision for the future of independent musical production therein. And check out his work with centrozoon, Stick Men and other groups wherever you listen to music. And enjoy!
Variety is on tap for this week's Prog-Watch! We'll hear new music from Katre, The Franky Valentyn Project, Steven Wilson, Galahad, Marillion, and Kim Seviour, along with great stuff from Trey Gunn, Jeff Berlin, and the Stick Men! I'll also send out a couple of listener dedications by Gravy Train and Genesis, and Dr. Rob Fisher will be taking us on another voyage of Progressive Discovery, with the Spanish project Kant Freud Kafka!

Much to the excitement of music aficionados worldwide, prog legends Stick Men will be releasing their new album “Prog Noir” on October 21, 2016. It is now available for pre-order as a single disc edition and a super deluxe box set, which contains an additional bonus CD with exclusive material, a double vinyl version of the album, a t-shirt and poster. The band, featuring members of King Crimson, has also released a new lyric video for the track, The Tempest’ A departure from their previous efforts, “Prog Noir” includes song oriented material, featuring vocals on several tracks. Says Tony Levin, “The album is somewhere between being the best of our current compositions, and having a unifying concept overall. Part way through the our recording process, the ‘Prog Noir’ title, lyrics and idea came up – it sort of shone a dark, noir light on what had come before, and it influenced what came after (including some ‘noir’ instrumental interludes that will be part of the box set version.) For me that’s a good way to go – I like a concept involved with an album sometimes, but I don’t feel it needs to encompass every piece.”
