Decoding Musical Mastery: A Journey of Learning and Teaching

The primary focus of this podcast featuring Sean Wilson (www.seanwilsonpiano.com) revolves around the concept that enhancing one's musical vocabulary is paramount for improving the ability to hear and understand music, rather than simply relying on ear training alone. I elucidate that many aspiring musicians mistakenly attribute their challenges in music comprehension to deficiencies in their auditory perception, when, in fact, it is their limited vocabulary that impedes their progress. By developing a more comprehensive musical vocabulary, individuals can significantly resolve a myriad of issues they encounter in their musical endeavors. Throughout our discussion, I provide insights into the importance of analyzing musical movements and identifying target chords, which ultimately fosters a deeper understanding of the music being played. This episode serves as an invaluable resource for those seeking to bridge the gap between performance and comprehension in their musical journeys.Takeaways: The importance of developing a musical vocabulary cannot be overstated, as it directly influences one's ability to transcribe and understand music effectively. I discovered that teaching and breaking down music significantly increased engagement, demonstrating the demand for educational content in music learning. Many musicians erroneously believe that their inability to hear music correctly stems from their ear, when in reality, it is often a lack of vocabulary that hinders their understanding. Understanding the direction in which a musician is moving is crucial for grasping the context of their performance, rather than merely focusing on individual notes or chords. To enhance one's musical ear, one must prioritize expanding their musical vocabulary, as this foundational knowledge leads to a greater understanding of music as a whole. Transcribing music requires not only listening skills but also the ability to recognize and interpret musical structures, which improves with experience and vocabulary growth. In this episode, Belinda Pollard, Donita Bundy and Alison Joy interview Lisa Stilwell, a veteran of Christian publishing. She rose to the position of senior acquisitions editor with major Christian publishing houses, and then moved into authoring devotionals and ghostwriting memoir for Christian leaders and people from the music industry. Don't forget to like and subscribe to the podcast! And go to gracewriters.com for show notes, transcript, useful links and factsheets, and to connect with our online community. Episode summary: How Lisa first moved into writing, unexpectedly, after stepping down from her long career as an acquisitions editor to care for her husband who had Parkinson's. The initial uncertainty Lisa felt about her ability to write, despite so many years of working with words, and her tips for others who long to write but are not sure if they have the ability. How Lisa sets herself deadlines, which helped her cope by establishing a sense of routine during the years of caring for her husband. Counting back from the deadline to work out how much needs to be written per day, but also allowing grace for when things don't go to plan. How Lisa – reluctantly at first! – moved into ghostwriting. Lisa hadn't ghostwritten before and thought the timing was wrong for her to work on this project because her husband had just moved to hospice, but God knew what He was doing. The process of being selected to work with Helen Smallbone, mother of singers Rebecca St James and the duo For King & Country. The gentle and respectful process for Lisa of working with Helen Smallbone, welcomed into the home, and guiding Helen regarding how much she asked her children vs her own memories of what happened. How to set word count targets relevant to the project, and stick to them. Connection and trust as the core of a relationship when ghostwriting someone's memoir. Having the courage and skill to ask probing questions, while respecting the person's right not to answer. You have to write in their voice, not your own. Listen constantly, for key phrases and the pace of their speech, for formal vs casual expression, for seriousness vs humour and how the two moods interact. Transcribing interview recordings is a painful task, but it's a process where you can really absorb elements of the story and see what extra questions you need to ask. Protecting yourself, because ghostwriting is draining work. The initially rocky and then smooth road to getting The Heavens Proclaim His Glory published – a coffee table book with Hubble telescope images combined with excerpts from authors and pastors Lisa had worked with across her editing career. How Lisa worked her way up to the senior position of Acquisitions Editor.

It's great to have Guy Searle, Marty Gentius, and Jeff Gammon join me to discuss everything from the latest beta updates to the anticipated iPhone 16 releases. We kick off the episode by discussing the release of iOS 18.1 beta 4 and MacOS Sequoia 15.1, which has many users excited about Apple intelligence features that were not included in the initial iOS 18 release. The anticipation for these AI-powered capabilities is palpable, especially among developers and enthusiasts who want to see how Apple will improve text handling and voice recognition through updates like the revamped Siri interface. Marty shares his experiences with running the beta, highlighting some underwhelming aspects of Apple intelligence, while we all voice the consensus that some features still feel “early-stage.” We also discuss public access to the 18.1 beta and caution users against installing it on production devices, reminding listeners of the potential instability that often accompanies beta software. Of particular interest is the integration of AI features like improved spell-checking, grammar corrections, and enhanced user input methods. Transitioning into discussions on Vision Pro, I share my experiences with the device over the last two weeks. We cover the recent updates to Vision OS 2, including enhanced response times and new guest modes for easier use by family and friends. Guy and Marty contribute insights about the evolving app landscape for Vision Pro, connecting it to broader trends in VR and AR technology, as well as user adoption challenges associated with high-cost devices. From there, we dive into the excitement surrounding the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro's upcoming release. There's an electric buzz in the conversation as we discuss the features of the new devices, especially the ease of repairs highlighted in Apple's communications. With the iPhone 16, we see a shift where repairability is finally being addressed, paving the way for sustainable practices in tech. As we discuss some of the risks of being an early adopter, especially with iOS 18, I present a series of the most exciting new features we can expect to see with the OS, including the revamped Control Center, RCS support for smoother communication integration across devices, customizable home screen widgets, and enhancements to the calculator app. Each feature seems to represent a significant leap in usability and user experience. Throughout the episode, we also touch on new security features, including the ability to lock apps and hide them for enhanced privacy, which is especially useful for sensitive applications. The Passwords app is also discussed, with a consensus that while it may not replace niche solutions like 1Password, it provides a solid and user-friendly option for the average person looking to manage their passwords effectively. In a lighter vein, we wrap up our conversations about the sports app updates and the implications for streaming sports, discussing the rising costs and complications that often frustrate sports fans. Jeff vocalizes common grievances about the fragmentation of sports streaming services, while we all acknowledge the challenges ahead for sports enthusiasts trying to navigate this landscape.   As we conclude, we emphasize how each update and new feature ultimately aims to enhance user experiences across Apple's ecosystem. It's a thrilling time for tech enthusiasts, and we're excited to see how these updates will transform the ways we interact with our devices. Developed by BeAware, this app serves as a personal assistant for deaf people in their everyday lives, providing them with a range of functionalities that enhance their security and ease of communication.Deaf assistant app for accessibilityDeaf Assistant, developed by BeAware, is a groundbreaking app that offers free accessibility for individuals who are deaf or hearing impaired. The app provides various features and services that aim to improve communication and inclusivity for the deaf community. The app offers a free version of its services, making it accessible to a wide range of users. BeAware understands that individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing already face hurdles in their everyday lives, and the app aims to eliminate any additional barriers by providing free accessibility. This commitment to inclusivity is commendable and reflects the company's mission to enable people and ensure equal opportunities for all.In addition to its free accessibility, Deaf Assistant also offers premium features for users who require more extensive services. For example, the app provides API access for enterprise users, allowing them to integrate the app's transcripts into their own applications. This is particularly useful for developers creating apps for smart glasses or other wearable devices. By utilizing Deaf Assistant's APIs, developers can easily incorporate speech-to-text capabilities into their applications without the need for extensive technical knowledge.Transcribing and translating real lifeOne of the key features of the Deaf Assistant app is its ability to convert any live in-person event into an accessible experience for the deaf within just 15 seconds. This feature, known as Conference Captioning, is particularly useful for events where sign language interpreters may not be available or for older individuals who may not be familiar with sign language. For example, imagine attending a church service where older individuals struggle to understand and follow what is happening due to their hearing impairment. With the Deaf Assistant app, event organizers can provide live captions for the entire service, ensuring that everyone feels included and connected. This eliminates the need for hearing aids, which may not work effectively in noisy environments or with air interference. To utilize Conference Captioning, event organizers simply need to wire themselves into the app and provide a unique URL or QR code to the hearing-impaired attendees. These attendees can then either download the app or access the captions directly through the provided URL. The app can be customized with the organizer's branding colors, creating a seamless and personalized experience.Additionally, the Deaf Assistant app offers live translation capabilities. This means that events can be made accessible not only to the deaf community but also to individuals who speak different languages. For instance, if an event organizer wants to cater to French-speaking attendees, they can simply provide a link for live captions in French.People are already loving itThe app was launched in 2021 and has already garnered a significant user base, with over 13,000 users across 50 countries. According to analytics, these users utilize the app at least four times every day, highlighting its immense value and popularity within the deaf community. The Deaf Assistant app has received recognition and acclaim, being featured by Apple and reaching the number-one spot on Hacker News. Its success can be attributed to its simplicity and effectiveness in addressing the accessibility needs of the deaf community.ConclusionIn conclusion, the Deaf Assistant app developed by BeAware is a game-changer in improving accessibility for individuals who are deaf or hearing impaired. Its Conference Captioning feature allows for live captions at events, ensuring that the deaf community can actively participate and engage. With its user-friendly interface and live translation capabilities, the app is a valuable tool for enhancing communication and inclusivity. By providing a simple and effective solution, the Deaf Assistant app is revolutionizing accessibility and empowering individuals with hearing impairments to navigate their everyday lives with ease.Interview by Todd Cochrane of Geek News Central.Sponsored by: Get $5 to protect your credit card information online with Privacy. He's the author of Insights in Jazz , which lays out a roadmap to learn over 200 jazz standard songs, along with a podcast of the same name. In this episode I interview John about his Lego bricks methodology for breaking down jazz songs into their atomic parts. An idea he developed himself when trying to play more with other musicians. SEO is a term that's thrown around a lot in the podcasting world, and it can be a little confusing.  So, we're here to break down that mystery for you. We'll uncover five actionable tips and techniques that you can apply today to boost your podcast SEO and enhance its discoverability. 5 Tips to Improve Your Podcast SEO Turn Your Podcast into Blog Posts: This technique involves transcribing your podcast, highlighting the main talking points, and turning that into a standalone article. This not only improves accessibility for your audience but also gives Google more text to crawl, improving your chances of showing up in search results. The Art of Titling: Your episode titles are more important than you might think. They're the first thing potential listeners see, and it's your first chance to hook them with something compelling. Including relevant keywords in your episode title can boost your podcast SEO. Keyword Research: Use keyword research tools like Google Trends and Ahrefs to understand what your audience is searching for. This can help you craft podcast topics that are relevant and interesting to your listeners. Craft Detailed Show Notes: Show notes are a summarized version of what was talked about in the episode. Writing a minimum of 300 words gives search engines more data to crawl and rank, and it's beneficial for listeners who might refer back to things you talked about in the episode. Leverage YouTube: YouTube is the world's second largest search engine. Uploading your podcast to YouTube, even if it's just the audio with a static image, can significantly increase your visibility. Back when I was in college, I studied with a great jazz guitarist in New York City named Steve Cardenas.Steve is a fantastic jazz musician, tours around the world with lots of different artists, and has recorded albums. In all senses of the word, a very accomplished musician and seasoned jazz player. In one of our lessons, one time, when I went up to his house in Brooklyn, he told me something that was slightly disturbing, at least to the way I was thinking about learning music and jazz at that time. And that was, he told me that he had never transcribed a jazz solo before. And this shook me because many of us understand that conventional advice for learning jazz is to learn jazz solos by ear, transcribe jazz solos and he didn't do that, and that kind of threw me in a whirlwind and kind of turned my world around. So, today, I'm going to talk about 5 reasons why you actually might not want to be transcribing jazz solos to learn how to play jazz and improve your solos. In this episode:1. What is transcribing in the jazz context2. Transcribing solos is time-consuming3. Transcribing solos is frustrating4. Transcribing solos doesn't always translate to better solos5. I met Patti Smith at Electric Lady Studios, the studio in New York's Greenwich Village opened by Jimi Hendrix a few weeks before he died, and she immediately walked me down to the basement level to show me the original murals—psychedelic, space-themed—that Hendrix had commissioned for the walls. She had first seen them in 1970, at the studio's opening, when, before she was a well-known artist and the “godmother of punk rock,” she bumped into Hendrix on the staircase. “He stopped and talked to me and told me that he was also shy,” she says. “We talked about his vision for the studio.” Five years later, she recorded the groundbreaking album Horses in Studio A. “It was beautiful but heartbreaking when we started recording to realize that he had such visions for the studio and never got to realize them.”Our initial plan was to do our interview in Studio A, but a miscommunication meant that it was already occupied by a film crew, so we instead went upstairs to a much smaller room, where Patti sat on a brown leather couch and I planted myself on an office chair opposite her. We sat there in conversation for two hours, and most of the time I was just thinking, “I'm sitting with Patti Smith, I'm sitting with Patti Smith,” breaking every so often in an attempt to produce a smart-enough question. Confined to her home during the pandemic, Patti started publishing on Substack to serialize a story, “The Melting,” and then began sharing poetry, songs, audio notes, and videos where she read to her subscribers and shared memories. “It kept me engaged with the people in the world.” Once she was free to tour again, she shot video on her iPhone to take her subscribers backstage with her band. She also performed a concert from Studio A that was livestreamed for her subscribers. Her Substack is her only online presence other than Instagram, where, at her daughter's urging, she opened an account and now has more than 1 million followers. She's 76 years old but still rocking hard, as demonstrated by her energetic birthday performance at Brooklyn Steel. In this conversation, I ask her about how being an artist in 2023 compares to 1973, and how she views this current moment in culture. We talked about building things up versus tearing things down, about friends loved and lost, and about living with gratitude. The opening line from Hendrix's epic song “1983… (A Merman I Should Turn to Be)” has become something like a mantra for Patti: “Hooray, I wake from yesterday.”Hooray indeed.https://pattismith.substack.com/ Show notesSubscribe to Patti Smith on SubstackYou can also find Patti on Instagram[03:37] Meeting Jimi Hendrix[10:28] Learning to write[12:18] Transcribing with Lenny Kaye [14:40] Lost loved ones[15:53] Friendship at its best[25:09] Writing The Melting[20:01] Trying Twitter, then Instagram[36:31] Taking subscribers behind the scenes[38:56] Being an artist in 1973[41:46] Patti's “not so secret” goal[44:09] On Picasso and social media[57:00] On being misrepresented in the media[59:06] Still mourning John Lennon[1:02:23] Contributing something of qualityThe Active Voice is a podcast hosted by Hamish McKenzie, featuring weekly conversations with writers about how the internet is affecting the way they live and write. Here's our second episode of The Deco-Stop; a deeper look into the humans behind deep-sea science and technology. We've done our science dive, and now it's time to decompress, and discuss tales at sea, career paths and the social & political aspects of deep-sea science.    From Steven Hawking to Charles Darwin, neurodiversity and science have been intertwined throughout history. Neurodiversity is a term which refers to the variety in the cognition of the human brain and can include people who are on the autism spectrum, or who have been diagnosed with dyslexia, dyspraxia, and dyscalculia, among others. We wanted to talk on a very human level about the strengths and weaknesses of being neurodivergent in science and to also share with you some personal stories and assistive resources. Thom shares his own journey in the field, alongside many other pioneering colleagues. Living legend, Bob Ballard speaks with us about his perspective on being dyslexic and even attributes his career success (including the discovery of the titanic) to his gift. Friends of the show, Tom Tangye, Sophie McLellan and Cat Morgan also share their experiences of working in the field alongside being neurodivergent. They share how the industry, and the world in general, is changing to be more inclusive and understanding of everyone who thinks differently. We had such a great time making this episode, and we're so grateful to everyone who spoke with us. Below you'll find a whole host of resources that have been shared with us, and that we recommend ourselves! Let's carry on this conversation, with colleagues, friends, and with those outside our inner circles. Content repurposing is a buzzword in business circles these days, likely because we're all running at breakneck speed and don't have the bandwidth to create MORE new content. Enter….content repurposing: using one key piece of content as the cornerstone for various other forms. But, what does content repurposing for podcast hosts and guests look like? Will you be reusing the audio in different ways? Transcribing it? Creating videos? Deep breath. Lucky for us, we can repurpose content without being a tech whiz or a videographer or spending hours a week recording ourselves. In today's episode, I chat with my friend and content strategist, Krystal Proffitt, to get the lowdown on how she not only repurposes content, but plans it with an eye toward repurposing. Krystal is a content strategist, coach, and host of the award-winning show, The Proffitt Podcast. She specializes in helping entrepreneurs start, launch, and market their content. Not a podcast host? No sweat: your guest interviews are content, too, and can absolutely be used as the basis of your content strategy. Topics covered include: Krystal's background in marketing and blogging, why she transitioned into podcasting, and how her current business grew out of listeners asking for help How, when planning out a piece of content (like a podcast episode), Krystal is already thinking about how parts of it can be repurposed for YouTube, Instagram, etc. Why Krystal sees her podcast as the most important piece of content she produces How to share podcast episodes you've been on, once they go live - and how, by leveraging the opportunity, you're creating a referral network and more opportunities The key channels that Krystal focuses on Full show notes and resources: https://thepodwizegroup.com/content-repurposing-krystal-proffitt
