It's no secret that our bodies, our minds, our perspectives in life change as we age. Yet we often believe that what we learned about playing trumpet while we were in our teens and early twenties will continue to work as we get older.Maybe it's because we heard something in a masterclass and decided this is the way to do it. Or we attended a certain school where certain dogmas regarding trumpet playing prevailed, even overshadowing individual needs of the player. This was more or less the impetus of Paul Baron and Bobby Medina beginning first a Facebook targeted at older players, and then eventually becoming a full-fledged training regimen called Trumpet Diagnostics. I wanted to pick the brains of the founders of the program about their experiences working with older players, and what they aim to achieve with their program.Thankfully we were able to get all three of us on a Zoom call from various parts of the U.S. and talk about their program.Enjoy the interview! What you'll hear in this episode:-The founding origins of the Trumpet Diagnostics program...02:30-The Facebook group becomes a webinar, which becomes the program...05:30-What does "Body Mechanics Mastery" mean?...06:30-Why certain methods we swear by are sometimes limited in their efficacy in teaching us how to play efficiently...08:40-Learning "the method of no method"; becoming our own teachers...13:00-Why have we moved beyond the various "schools" of thought regarding trumpet playing?...14:15-Martial arts lessons applied to the physicality of trumpet...18:30-Efficiency (i.e. minimal playing) is key to longevity as a trumpeter...23:00-Don't worry about aesthetics based on showmanship, worry about what works for you...27:30-What is the biggest hurdles Paul and Bobby's students need to overcome?...29:00-Neuroplasticity and repetition over a long period of time is key to improving your playing...34:30-What you'll experience with the Trumpet Diagnostics program...38:05-Plus whatever your discerning ears deem worthy of your time and interest...Resources mentioned:Trumpet DiagnosticsTips for Trumpeters 50 and Beyond! Did you know that on top of fixing Biden's border crisis, Gov. Yet, he continues to struggle in the polls plagued by media narratives that his campaign has stalled.Carl contends that DeSantis' campaign woes has little to nothing to do with his campaign or DeSantis himself. God's TrumpetersReader: Jon WatsonDate: 28th November 2022Passage: 1 Thessalonians 1:8-------------------Trumpeters often have to play an important part on big occasions — maybe when the Queen appears in her state robes and with her crown. They also play an important role in the army when the soldiers are on parade and often when the troops went into battle. The Old Testament mentions trumpeters very often - they were the 'alarm bells' in cities if there was a threat from enemies. They also called men to arms to go and fight. One of the reasons trumpets were, and are, important is that they give a clear sound which can travel well. That, I think, is the reason the Apostle Paul used the trumpet sound when he wrote that the Christian life of the believers in Thessalonica was so true to Christ that people could really 'hear it' and 'see it'. These were genuine Christian folk. And the 'sound' of their Christian reputation travelled widely. What a wonderful testimony to have! And what a challenge to us if we say that we are Christians. Do people really 'hear' Jesus living in us through the words we speak and the way we act? Let's think about that. PrayerDear Lord, too often I fail to live up to what I should be as a Christian. Forgive me and make me strong to be a trumpeter for Jesus. Amen.

Synopsis On today's date in 1953, thousands crowded the route to and from London's Westminster Abbey for the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II and, at the Queen's own request, the event was televised live by the BBC. British composer William Walton was asked to write two new pieces. The first Walton's “Coronation Te Deum”, a work that he had begun almost a decade earlier for a quite different occasion, namely the opening night of the 1944 London Proms. The piece got shifted to a back-burner when Walton was asked to work on Lawrence Olivier's wartime film of Shakespeare's “Henry V.” For the new Queen's Coronation, Walton returned to his abandoned score, writing to friends, “I've got cracking on the Te Deum. Lots of counter-tenors and little boys Holy-holy-ing, not to mention all the Queen's Trumpeters and a side drum. You will like it, I think, and I hope He will too.” “He” was capitalized, so presumably Walton was referring to either the Deity -- or Winston Churchill, perhaps. Walton was also asked to compose a “Coronation March,” which he entitled “Orb and Scepter” after a line, coincidentally, from Shakespeare's “Henry V.” Walton's March may have seemed a bit jazzy to the more conservative audiences of the day, but one critic, slipping into Cockney slang, gushed, “It sounds like a right royal knees-up!” Music Played in Today's Program William Walton (1902 - 1983) – Coronation Te Deum (Andrew Lumsden, organ; Finzi Singers; Paul Spicer, cond.) Chandos 9222 William Walton (1902 - 1983) – Orb And Sceptre March (English Northern Philharmonia; Paul Daniel, cond.) Naxos 8.553981

You'll want to tune into this episode. Imagine existing in a professional music environment where fear is the dominating factor in everything you do. You miss a note and immediately get the stink eye from the maestro, fearful that one more misstep and you'll be out on the street, without a job and no hope of ever getting one again. The maestro even goes so far as to describe a performance by the great Phil Smith of the NY Phil as "terrible" because Phil (gasp!!!) missed a note during a performance. One would think that a job performing music in such an environment wouldn't be much fun at all. And one would be correct in thinking so. That was the reality that Sławomir Cichor faced on a daily basis. But then he visited a trumpet seminar hosted by Grand Valley State University circa 2012 and for the first time saw trumpeters performing for the pure love of performing. Music without the jackboot on the throat was suddenly enjoyable, and Sławomir has taken that joy he discovered at that seminar to his home country of Poland and shared it with those following in his footsteps. In this episode, you'll discover: -What does the trumpet scene look like in Poland?...02:02 -How Slawomir got started on trumpet...07:20 -Surviving a culture of perpetual fear...15:06 -A trip to the U.S. opens the eyes to new possibilities...23:21 -How Sławomir is opening new doors for younger players in Poland...27:43 -And much more! Travel anywhere in MN Lakes Country and you'll likely see, or hear, Trumpeter Swans. It wasn't always the case. Kelly and Carol visit a popular hangout for people and the Trumpeters near Detroit Lakes and talk about how the Trumpeter swan made a triumphant comeback in Minnesota not that long ago. Kelly shares the story of how the Minnesota swan population had dwindled to zero by the early 1900's and how wildlife conservation groups and individuals worked successfully to reintroduce the Trumpeter swans to Minnesota in 1991 near Detroit Lakes. Today the swan population is estimated at 30,000 in Minnesota.

Happy Labor Day week! Did unions really give us a 40-hour work week? What's in the News with stories on tariff trouble, bad cops, more bad cops, and even more bad cops, and poking the bear. Finally, a Statists Gonna State segment on John McCain. This episode is brought to you by ZenCash, now known as Horizen, a cryptocurrency that infuses privacy, anonymity, and security done right. Also brought to you by Free Talk Live, providing you with fresh, pro-liberty content 7 days a week on more than 180 radio stations across the country. WHAT'S RUSTLING MY JIMMIES The national Libertarian Party has two mentions of labor unions in their platform. The first is "We favor repealing any requirement that one must join or pay dues to a union as a condition of government employment." The second is "We support the right of private employers and employees to choose whether or not to bargain with each other through a labor union." However, the thing that drives me the craziest about unions is that they receive so much praise for bringing us the 40-hour work week! WHAT'S IN THE NEWS In the fallout of tariffs news, the federal government will spend up to $1.2 billion to buy products from farmers hurt by the retaliatory tariffs from China and other countries and will provide almost $5 billion in payments to farmers. In bad apple news, a Texas jury on Tuesday found former police officer Roy Oliver guilty of murder in the shooting death of 15-year-old Jordan Edwards. In "F" the police news, a federal judge told a Virginia sheriff's deputy that he had no right to pull over a car because a passenger flipped him off. After this, proceedings advanced in the lawsuit against Patrick County Lieutenant Rob Coleman. US District Judge Jackson L. Kiser had found sufficient evidence to bring the matter to trial. In more F the police news, the police chief of a small Georgia town is defending an officer who deployed a stun gun on a "smiling" 87-year-old woman, saying she refused to comply with numerous commands to put down a kitchen knife she was using to cut dandelions. In poking a hornet's nest news, in a move Russian officials immediately labeled as “unfriendly,” the Norwegian Defense Ministry has announced that the US will be more than doubling the number of Marines stationed inside Norway, bringing yet more combat troops to Russia's northern border. STATISTS GONNA STATE John McCain is dead, and based on who I'm seeing in my news feed, he was either an American hero or a traitor to conservatism. It is, interestingly, the liberals in my feed who are extolling the righteousness of McCain and comparing him to the Obtuse in Chief, saying that if Trump were a Republican like McCain, then they would all be behind him. The conservatives, who are all now, for the most part, Trumpeters, are saying McCain was a terrible Republican. But, I wanted to take a minute and not look at McCain as a member of any particular political party or ideology, other than his membership as one of our rulers, and a massive statist. So, let's do that.
Trump, Trump, Independence, Freedom
This is the penultimate podcast of 2016. and You can fuck right off, 2016. Really. If this year were the year when Dickens’ published “A Christmas Carol,” the ghost of Christmas’ present would look a hell of a lot more like the ghost of Christmas’ past in the actual book. So fuck this year. I will not look at the gravestone. I will not brush the snow away to view the horrifying words etched by Trumpletongues and Trumpeters and Donald Trump and Vlad Putin and the opioid epidemic and cancer and all of the other shit that has me held together so thinly that I’d unravel like a cheaply made Cosby (…fuck that guy too…) sweater and crumble in a pile of liberal tears and useless stocking stuffers. Oh…hey, we have Mary on this one. Mary is awesome and she doesn’t deserve all of that anxiety and vitriol above. Today we talk about Unitarianism, active listening, Christmas cookies, awesome neighbors, beautiful children, and the true spirit of this, and if we can get our shit together, all seasons. Please listen. Don’t let my intensity cause you to pause. This is well worth your time. Also, John Lennon and the vocal genius of Yoko Ono in, “Happy Christmas (War is Over),” and also Elton John with, “Yellow Brick Road.” Those are beautiful tunes, and Mary is a beautiful human. Love yinz! -G

GOP or WWE? If you heard a sound bite of a raucous crowd, would you know if it was a Republican or professional wrestling event? Because sometimes they sound eerily similar… A year ago today, most people thought we would already be discussing a Hillary Clinton presidency, and the Trump train would have turned and the joke would be tired. While the joke is tired, the Trump train is in full force. However, Clinton’s journey to the White House has been far from any coronation that many had predicted, and surging surprise candidate, Bernie Sanders, has been able to maintain a virtual tie ahead of the infamous March 1st “Super Tuesday”. But it’s also not helpful if you don’t know what a caucus or a primary is, or how these “super delegates” are giving a bleeding Clinton campaign so much needed assistance. Lastly, it seems totally implausible, but the factors motivating people who #feelthebern for self-described Socialist-Democrat Bernie Sanders are often the same factors motivating Trumpeters. See how these outsider candidates are tapping into the very same frustrations in very different ways. Majority Villain is a show working to podcast the shit out of democracy. This week on "Radio Film School" is perhaps the most personal story I've ever publicly shared. And we see why that it is key to your journey as a filmmaker.Every self-respecting comic book nerd knows that the most iconic superheroes have origin stories tied to parents, and in many cases, fathers or father figures. Superman. Batman. Spider-Man. Thor. These are just a few whose origins as heroes are intimately tied to their parents and father figures. In this week's episode of "Radio Film School: Cinemaverick" we look at the role my father played in my own origin story as a filmmaker. We also meet my long-time friend and frequent podcast partner in crime, JD Cochran. And finally, we return where we left off last episode with Patrick Moreau of Stillmotion commenting about the death of his mother and the profound impact that had on him as an artist. In doing so, I delve into my own perilous territory as it relates to that subject.MusicMusic in this episode was curated from FreeMusicArchive.org.Little Wooden Church by The Trumpeters. Sexson Ryesmit takes us through a short canoe building theory course. Also, three of the worlds best trumpeters compete for the audience's favor. It's a wonderful episode, so turn your radio dial all the way to the right, to TES!
This great edition of the Kenton band performs one of composer/arranger Johnny Richards' masterpieces. It's a seven part suite called "Cuban Fire". Richards was born in Mexico of Spanish and Mexican parentage and this suite reflects not only his influences from the great modern classical composers like, Bartok, Stravinsky, Hindemith etc but also his Latino background. This edition of the Kenton band was fill of great soloists and they add to the expansive drama of this suite. Players like saxophonists, Lucky Thompson, Bill Perkins and Lennie Niehaus all solo here as do trombonists Carl Fontana, Bob Fitzpatrick and Kent Larsen. Trumpeters, Vinnie Tano and Sam Noto are heard as well . The Kenton band is driven by guitarist Ralph Blaze, bassist Curtis Counce and drum great Mel Lewis and is also driven by a Latin percussion ensemble and two tympani players. "Cuban Fire" is one of Kenton's best recordings and a favorite of people who don't really like the Kenton band! "Fuego Cubano!" on tap tonight!
