Those of you with good enough memories will remember I have some thoughts on terroir in beer. Basically, I think the concept is a scam, and that a product which is so influenced by not just a confluence of ingredients, but so much human intervention can't possibly express the t-word.However, I remain open-minded, and I try to let those opinions remain somewhat malleable. While beer as a finished product might not be the best device to showcase the influence of climatic conditions on ingredients and flavour, when it comes to those ingredients individually I admit that differences can be demonstrated. Take, for example, Centennial, a public aroma hop variety that is known for expressing aromatics that range from freshly zested lemon rind to sun-warmed rose petals in full bloom. Centennial is a characterful hop that makes delicious beer, and if you don't believe me just ask breweries like California's Sierra Nevada, or Bell's Brewery in Michigan, who use this particular hop to stunning effect in beers such as Celebration and Two Hearted. In fact, the latter of those two beers is what we have to thank for the continued success and admiration for this particular hop variety. But what's the difference between a Centennial hop if it's grown in the hot, arid climate of Yakima Valley in Washington compared to the cooler climate of Woodburn, Oregon? While located further south, with the city being just outside of Portland, it's also closer to the coast, which brings in that cooler, Pacific air. It means the hops experience completely different growing conditions, giving Oregon Centennial its own vibe compared to the harvest a few hundred miles north. Crosby Hops are the owners of that hop farm, and they are growing the Centennial that you find in Bell's Two Hearted. But it's also making its way over to the UK, and most recently it has been showcased in a new, nationally released IPA from the Leeds-based Northern Monk Brewery called Beyond. While it's still packed with that familiar pithy citrus, it also has something else—a brightness, a resonance if you will. It brings a distinctive character to the beer, and a lot of this is down to where it grows, and who grows it. In this episode of The Pellicle Podcast I'm lucky enough to sit down, in person, with Christine Clair and Nolan Russll of Crosby Hops, a generational family-owned hop farm in Oregon, USA. It was a great opportunity to chat about both the challenges faced by, and the opportunities available to modern-day hop farmers, and there's a good mix of chat that veers from the scientific and technical, to the romantic. Hops are an ingredient that gets a lot of people fired up about beer, so if you love hops, then this is an episode for you. A special thank you to our sponsors at Brewers Select who made this episode possible by bringing Christine and Russell over to Beer X Liverpool, where this interview was recorded in March 2025. We're able to produce The Pellicle Podcast directly thanks to our Patreon subscribers, and our sponsors Loughran Brewers Select. If you're a craft beer drinker, you've probably had Bell's Two Hearted IPA—and if you haven't, stop what you're doing and fix that. In Episode 13 of Matt Likes Beer, I revisit this iconic American IPA, reflect on my own history with it, and put it through the judging wringer for an honest, guideline-based review. A Familiar Face in the Wild Two Hearted has gone from a hidden gem to a supermarket staple. Back in the day, it was a recommendation from a beer friend whose name and face I've long since forgotten. But the beer? That stuck. It's the one that pulled me into the world of IPAs and hop-forward beers. Even with Bell's acquisition and expansion under Sapporo's umbrella, Two Hearted remains reliably solid—and, importantly, unchanged. It's a 7% ABV American IPA brewed with 100% Centennial hops, delivering citrus, grapefruit, and pine aromas that punch your nose before the glass hits your lips. It's a go-to in restaurants with thin tap lists and a reliable backup when the local stuff isn't doing it. Style Showdown I reviewed it under BJCP's 21A American IPA guidelines. Despite occasional (and misguided) arguments that it's too dark or too alcoholic to be a “true” IPA, it fits perfectly into the style. My judging breakdown? Appearance: Orange-gold and glowing. 3/3. Aroma: Orange zest, grapefruit, tropical fruit, light sweetness. 12/12. Flavor: Great hop expression, solid bitterness, but lacking distinct malt character. 15/20. Mouthfeel: Smooth and well-carbonated. 5/5. Overall: Delicious, but a bit more malt balance would elevate it. 7/10. Final Score: 42/50 Clone Attempts & Price Shock I've even tried to clone this beer using Bell's own ingredients from their old General Store (RIP). The results? Close, but no Centennial cigar. Brewing variables like yeast handling and water chemistry make a big difference. Also? The hops didn't seem all that different from the ones I normally buy. Still, a fun experiment. Then there's the unforgettable sticker shock moment: $16 for a 16oz Two Hearted at a Columbus Blue Jackets game. Worth it? Maybe. Shocking? Absolutely. One-Star Review Roulette The internet delivered again, with some hilariously bad takes: “Tastes like dog shit.” (A classic.) “Most ungodly bitter beer I've ever tasted.” “Deserving of a 75… 1 out of 5 stars.” (Math is hard.)

Beer Families, Closing Times, and a BankruptcyGlad to be back to it this week with all the beery talk we can handle. You know we dabble in beer cocktails and Brian finally gets to try one he's been wanting for a while and shares how that turned out.Remember when all of those crazy light macro beers came out making a big deal out of how few calories they had? Well Molson Coors says the consumer is now more concerned with lower ABV than calories, so they're making some changes to showcase that.Beer families seem to be the thing these days. Both Voodoo Ranger and Two Hearted have had a family of beers for a while, and SweetWater announced they're going that route with their flagship 420 brand. Look for new brews soon. We've talked about tinned seafood a lot but if we want you all to join us on this adventure we figured we better offer some actual recommendations. So this week we share our first one and ponder some beer pairings. In news that was totally expected, D9 Brewing has filed for bankruptcy protection. If the name isn't ringing a bell they are part of Community Brewing Ventures, the parent company that also owns Bevana. Yep, exactly. Some realllllly loose research suggests that couples that drink together and have similar drinking habits live longer. We don't know if that's a promise or a threat, but we do know their "research" was pretty weak. Thanks for listening to Beer Guys Radio! Alright, 'Combies! Like we said in the last episode, content's going to be a bit different until the WGA/SAG-AFTRA strike ends (with a fair deal for the writers and performers). So, we're going to dive into some fandom content that we haven't really had a chance to yet. As one of the oldest and longest running Sci-Fi/Fantasy series, Doctor Who is a deceptively dense series in terms of lore and spectacle! So we're hitching a ride on the TARDIS to venture into the Whovian fandom... and we're bringing a friend along! Award-winning author of The Binge Watcher's Guide Doctor Who and The Rite of Wands, Mackenzie Flohr has entered the Hideout and she prepared to geek out with Joe and Christine throughout Time and Space. So come on down, 'Combies, and let's see where the TARDIS takes us! And be sure to check out Mackenzie's works at https://www.mackenzieflohr.com/!
In this episode Bob and I finally reach the IPA category. We begin this category with the American IPA. Characterized by floral, fruity, citrus-like, piney or resinous American-variety hop character, the IPA beer style is all about hop flavor, aroma and bitterness. This has been the most-entered category at the Great American Beer Festival for more than a decade, and is the top-selling craft beer style in supermarkets and liquor stores across the U.S. Examples of this style: 1. Bell's – Two Hearted 2. Dogfish Head – 60 Minute IPA 3. Sierra Nevada – Torpedo Extra IPA ABV: 5.5-7.5% IBUs: 40-70 Color: 6-14 Serving Temp: 45-55F Serving Pressure: 7-13 PSI Beer Representation: Fat Heads Head Hunter 7.5% ABV 87 IBUs Beer Description: 2023 World Beer Cup Gold Award American IPA. Uncivilized and aggressive, this West Coast styled IPA packs wicked hop flavors and aroma. World Beer Cup Silver 2012. GABF Silver 2010, Bronze 2011. National IPA Championship Winner 2012, 2010. It took us a little over 4 months and 12 episodes to arrive here at the first full length episode of "Who Are These Guys?" The amount of love and support we've received from everyone that reached out begging for full episodes was out of this world. We open hot right out of the gate with a mini-fight as Jon and Kurt are going at it over the technical setup of the podcast. Megan brings us back to center with a breathing session and we quickly turn to the celebrity lookalikes of Jesse, Kurt, and Megan. The team share what they are consuming at the moment. Megan is getting started with Matthew McConaughey's book. Kurt is still drinking beers, Bell's Two Hearted to be exact. Jesse, Megan, and JK are back from Florida. Meg was terrorized by the most perfect dead lizard ever, Jesse has a new way of asking bartenders if they have certain types of expensive tequila, and Jon drank over 100 cups of coffee. The flight back was a perfect example of plane etiquette from our fellow Long Islanders on display. Jon spends his Friday night starring in a mob murder mystery parody which brings up a debate about what's the right amount of notes to put in your anniversary cards as well as a discussion on the greeting card industry overall. We go into a deep discussion around what if we had our own cults and why is it that cults always lead back to sex and murder. A question about bucket lists goes nowhere except Kurt who kinda wants to go to Europe and a Pirates game. We wrap up talking about what everyone talks about when they are out with their friends and check in on Kurt's health. Come join us every couple of weeks for more episodes of "Who Are These Guys?"

In Part 2 we offer some history on the town of Seney, Michigan, when it served as home for three thousand loggers, becoming a North Central version of a wild west town, in the days before Hemingway stopped there on his fishing trip. In part two Nick Adams manages to pull in some nice trout and loses one big one, the whole process described extremely well by young Hemingway who was on his way to a career in writing. Big Two-Hearted River is one of Hemingway's first stories, written upon his return from the Italian Front in 1919, and released in 1924 as a part of his short story collection titled "In Our Time". Part One joins the protagonist Nick Adams, who we can safely assume is Hemingway, since he actually experience this adventure, as he exits a train near the burned out town of Seney in upper Michigan in order to do a few days of solitary camping. There is a backstory to Hemingway's trip to Seney which I might share as a follow up to this short story. The story brought him wide acclaim as an up and coming young writer in the early twenties, writing about a generation which had been greatly affected by World War One. As you no doubt have ascertained by the title of the show, this one goes off the rails quickly and devolves into a conversation about garbage plates and general BS. Matt's exhausted, Blue's drunk, and we continue in our steady march toward being the Doughboys. We also drink a bunch of Bell's beers from the Bell's Box of Hearts. Blue wants to call it the Box of Farts, but we run a classier establishment than that. It's Cold Hearted, Two Hearted, Light Hearted and Black Hearted. All definitely worth drinking.
