In Episode 46, Mark Graban and Jamie Flinchbaugh spend a lot of time talking about AI, but that still, as always, begins with the whiskey. Episode page We both asked ChatGPT to consider all our ingredients for making a whiskey-based cocktail, and to invent an original recipe. Jamie's is called The Bourbon Harmony, although there was a lot in there to try to reach harmony, and Mark's was called the Spiced Cherry Rye Cocktail. The verdict for both drinks was that they were good, but probably wouldn't be made a second time. We had slightly different tactics in prompting ChatGPT to generate our recipes, which we discussed.  We then spent a little time recognizing the passing of Don Petersen, former CEO of Ford in the late 1980s. Peterson was very different from an automotive CEO at the time, disrupting many practices whose time had come. Most notably, he brought in Dr. Deming to help influence the transformation.  The discussion then turned into a deeper dive into how a lean thinker might look at artificial intelligence, machine learning, and more. This explored governance of AI, having good standard work and workflow design around AI usage, lessons of effective delegation while treating AI like an employee, when to use it, and even a few tips and tricks along the way. We saved the discussion of whether AI will be the end of humanity for when we might have a stronger cocktail.  Have AI design your new cocktail, make it yourself since AI can't do that, and sit down for this interesting discussion. Ken, Iggy, Michael, and Doc compare Toasted to the Ryder Cup Toasted and a 12-year age stated dusty, all from Elijah Craig. We then dig into comparing A123 to C923 and a private barrel pick from University Liquors in Des Moines. Email us at - thewhiskeyfriends@gmail.com Music by Adam Whitehead - https://www.facebook.com/adamwhiteheadmusic Elijah Craig Toasted Barrel (94 Proof) The regular Elijah Craig Toasted Barrel is a bourbon with a sweet and vanilla-forward profile. It opens with notes of toasted marshmallows and rich caramel, which give it a delightful sweetness. The palate offers a combination of graham cracker, chocolate, and caramel, complemented by subtle nutmeg and pepper spice. While it lacks a strong punch, it's a pleasant and smooth sipping bourbon. The finish is marked by a hint of rye spice followed by rich caramel, brown sugar, and a touch of sweetness. Despite the 94-proof strength, it's an enjoyable, albeit somewhat thin, pour. Elijah Craig Ryder Cup Toasted Barrel (94 Proof) The Elijah Craig Ryder Cup Toasted Barrel takes a step beyond its regular toasted counterpart. A unique finishing touch in Italian oak barrels adds depth and character to this special edition. On the nose, it exudes notes of caramel, and the sweetness comes through more prominently than the regular toasted barrel. The palate offers a delightful mix of caramel and butterscotch with a hint of cinnamon and nutmeg. While it maintains the 94-proof strength, the additional toasty and fruity elements make it a more complex and enjoyable sip compared to its regular counterpart. It's a bourbon with a slight peppery kick, reminiscent of a well-crafted cocktail. This limited edition is a worthy addition for any bourbon enthusiast. Elijah Craig Small Batch with 12 Year Age Statement (Old Style) This old-style Elijah Craig Small Batch with a 12-year age statement stands as a testament to the bourbon craftsmanship of the past. On the nose, it greets you with rich caramel and toffee notes. The palate is an explosion of sweetness with a depth that's unparalleled by many contemporary bourbons. It carries flavors of caramel, dark chocolate, and a hint of oak. Despite its proof of 94, it manages to deliver an incredibly well-balanced and robust profile. The charred oak influence is prominent, and it feels like a throwback to the golden era of bourbon. This bourbon exudes a unique charm that modern expressions sometimes miss. It's a testament to how good they used to make them. If you have one tucked away, you're in for a real treat. Elijah Craig C923 is a limited-edition bourbon that has garnered attention among enthusiasts for its remarkable qualities. Here's a review of this distinctive whiskey: Appearance: Elijah Craig C923 pours a rich, deep amber color in the glass. It has a substantial and inviting visual presence, hinting at the complex flavors within. Nose: The nose is an exquisite blend of sweet and spicy aromas. Notes of caramel, vanilla, and toffee emerge first, accompanied by hints of ripe dark fruits like cherries and blackberries. These inviting scents are balanced by subtle oak and spice, creating an enticing bouquet. Palate: Upon taking the first sip, you're greeted by a full-bodied and well-rounded profile. Caramel and butterscotch provide a silky sweetness that blankets the taste buds. The fruity elements persist, with a touch of dried apricot and plum contributing to the depth of flavor. The influence of oak is notable, bringing a warm and slightly charred woodiness, along with hints of baking spices like cinnamon and clove. Finish: The finish on Elijah Craig C923 is long and satisfying. It combines the sweetness of toffee and vanilla with a pleasant, lingering warmth from the spices. There's a delicate balance between the sweet and spicy elements, making for a highly enjoyable and memorable conclusion.

The number of fantastic bottles of bourbon you can buy right off the shelf at a fair price has not changed. In fact, it's only expanded in recent years, despite folk's insistence that they can "never find the good stuff." The truth is, more people than ever want a pool of very scarce products. That being said, here are three bottles you can go get off the shelf RIGHT NOW for under $40. If you can learn to love these the way people "think" they love Blanton's then you will never be disappointed. To quote Stephen Stills, "love the one you're with." So, for my money, Elijah Craig Small Batch, Wild Turkey 101, and Maker's Mark 101 offer the most balanced, flavor forward, drinkable, versatile, and affordable "shelfers" on the market. Wild Turkey 101 is an absolute classic, a master class in subtle bourbon flavor. It's rich, and oaky, but with a soft licorice and herbal finish. Elijah Craig Small batch for under $35 is still in insane value. Bottle at 94 proof it's sweet, rustic flavors driven by orange, mint, and cherry make an unparalleled Old Fashioned. And finally, Maker's Mark 101, is simply without a doubt the most delicious and drinkable bourbon on the market, and no one is talking about it. It's the PERFECT PROOF for Maker's Mark. It's not much more expensive than regular and literally puts any competitor at the $40 price point to shame. Can't find Weller??? This is the best shelf wheater you'll ever taste. Period.

It's the beginning of my favorite month of the year! Brought to you by The Real Voice - Mel Allen. Providing voice over for commercials, podcasts, explainer videos, and more. Samples and demos at https://therealvoice.com Coors Light is in the new for two reasons - they're making Coors Almighty Light with holy water as a collaboration with he Foo Fighters and the upcoming Studio 666 horror-comedy movie. Whether it is an effective demon deterrent remains to be seen - but we do know that Coors Light is making an investment in deterring some single use plastics! Molson Coors is making an $85 million investment in transitioning from plastic rings to fully recyclable and sustainable cardboard wrap carriers later this year. It will have a significant impact by removing 1.7 million pounds of plastic waste annually. Coors Light will be leading the way, with other brands to follow. Expect the entire North American portfolio to transition by 2025. For the Holy Water story click https://mybeerbuzz.blogspot.com/2022/02/coors-foo-fighters-team-up-for-coors.html and for the cardboard ring story click https://www.pennlive.com/business/2022/03/coors-light-says-it-will-eliminate-six-pack-plastic-rings-by-end-of-the-year.html What would your friends say if you bought a 30 acre hole in the ground? They might think you've gone mad or at least losing a bit of touch with reality - but Nigel Jagger did just that 35 years ago and proved his critics wrong. He's turning that hole, an abandoned war bunker, into a massive wine cellar that now holds $2 Billion worth of wine. It maintains a consistent temp of 57 F and 80 percent humidity. Conveniently, that's also good conditions for Formula 1 racing tires, which were also stored there in the past. I doubt I'll ever have anything currently stored in there - like the case of 1945 Chateau Coeval Blanc wine valued at $150,000 or the $2 Million bottle of whiskey. Heck - I wouldn't even want to be in there with those prices - I'm too afraid I'd drop something. According to some experts - there are six bottles you can''t really go wrong with - and since it's the Food Network they probably know what they're talking about. One of them was surprising, as it's an $89 bottle of Hillock Solar from NY, but it was good to see the affordable Elijah Craig Small Batch on there and a great (dare I say cheap) whiskey for mixed drinks Wild Turkey 101. The Fred Minnick Show
What Whiskey Should You Pair To Music Genres?

The Fred Minnick Show

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 8, 2020 28:20

It's a Fred Minnick Show with just Fred doing his thing. He talks about buying bourbon gifts for family and friends based on their musical tastes. What musical genres do your loved ones prefer? Fred might just have the perfect pour to pair with their whiskey tastes. Better yet, what's the best whiskey to pair with your favorite music? Sipping good whiskey and listening to good music is a good way to spend an evening. EPISODE SUMMARY Fred dishes on: His forthcoming website that will help promote his previous musical guests. The way music - like whiskey - connects with the brain to create specific memories that will return with repeated experiences. In other words, hearing a familiar song can have a similar effect as re-tasting a favorite whiskey. The best whiskey for a jazz fan - Elijah Craig Barrel Proof, because it's a fine sipper and also can inject some life into a party. Country music -trucks, prison, infidelity, deceased pets ... well, it might be best not to drink to that particular area of country-western music. Maybe go for the boot-scootin' type of country, which might go well with George Dickel, which is "a very country music-tasting whiskey." Yes, it's true, Fred used to participate in rodeo, and the smell of Dickel reminds him of the smell of a tack room. He sucked at roping, however. With hip hop music, it's like a cocktail from your favorite bartender - it might be different than what all the other bartenders are making. There are a lot of variations of hip hop, just like with, say, an old fashioned. "It's one of the most flexible forms of art," Fred says. The call here? Barrell Bourbon, because it's all blends, all the time, with whiskeys from around the world. If it's hardcore rap you're listening to, go for something barrel-proof, like a stiff shot of Distillery 291's Bad Guy (120 proof!). Into rock 'n' roll? There's only one iconic brand you need to know: Jack Daniel's. 'Nuff said. For classical music, it's a bit tougher. Fred believes you want complexity. Even with an artist like The Beatles, it's music that will make him want to sit and think. That's complexity. How about a Michter's 20 year or a Pappy Van Winkle 15 year old? Or a well-aged Macallan? (Of course, it's a lot easier to find a copy of the Beatles' White Album than, say, a bottle of King of Kentucky.) What of pop music? It's another variable, and very visual. Think Lady Ga Ga. And Katy Perry would be a very different pairing. Or Madonna, the queen of pop. But in the end, Fred suggests basing the pairing on what they like most out of four flavors: Cinnamon (Four Roses), nutmeg (Buffalo Trace), caramel/vanilla (Elijah Craig Small Batch) and grains/bread (Knob Creek). QUOTABLES "This is my passion, I love whiskey, I love talking about it and I love complementing the whiskey with music." See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Joining us as co-hosts are CLN members Jen House (also a board member) and Katie Benik. We took some questions, shared what people were drinking in the chat, and had our own chat about what we’ve learned from the Summit. We started by sharing our whiskey selections in the “budget-friendly” category. We certainly had some variation, ranging from Buffalo Trace to Skrewball. Those watching weren’t forced into our theme, so we had more adventurous and elaborate selections from our audience. The first takeaway that we discussed was from Deondra Wardelle’s talk, and the challenge of shifting from micromanaging controlling manager to a leader who encourages people to experiment, take action, and learn. We then talked about the theme of respect for people, a key lean tenant, and how hard people find it to be specific about how it is applied. We then turned to Renee Smith’s point of replacing fear with love and providing psychological safety. We concluded talking about Dan Markovitz’s points about framing problem statements. In wrapping up, we shared information about CLN’s charity project, Community College of Aurora’s Unity Scholarship to open more opportunities for future Black leaders to reach their highest potential. CLN matched the first $500 donated, and Jamie and Mark are matching the next $500 in donations. The donation channel is open through October 16th. And finally, our fun question: what’s your favorite lean-related word, but for a silly reason? The answers included muda, poka-yoke, verschlimmbesserung, and queuing. Then, they open a bottle of Elijah Craig Small Batch, a bourbon Brad has been especially psyched to try. Will it live up to his expectations? Could it possibly live up to Casablanca? After the whiskey review, the guys discuss whether the film punishes Bergman's character, the very much married Ilsa, for her desire for Bogart, while the reverse isn't true. 0:00 - Intro and Initial Thoughts 30:50 - Elijah Craig Review 40:00 - Analysis and Final Thoughts Film & Whiskey Podcast. As we enjoy some summer R&R, enjoy this favorite episode from the Whiskey Business archives where we celebrate two of America's favorite pastimes...baseball and getting drunk. It's not unusual to come up with some far fetched ideas after a bottle of whiskey (or two). Dino's guest this week not only came up with a whiskey fueled idea, but he is actually following through with it. Accountant Chuck Lombardo has set off to visit every major league baseball park in the country. Chuck shares some great stories from the road while Dino shares a bottle of Elijah Craig Small Batch.
