SHORT: What Next For The Snuts?

The Snuts are a fascinating band to me. Forming in 2015 the band have released 3 albums so far: ‘W.L.', ‘Burn The Empire' and ‘Millennials'.Now when it comes to these three records, none of them stick to the same genre. Their debut attempt ‘W.L.' is what I would consider generic indie. I don't mean this is a negative way at all, but hits like ‘Glasgow' and ‘Always' are your classic indie, sing along, festival anthems. Alongside your slower tracks ‘Top Deck' and my personal favourite ‘No Place I'd Rather Go', this is a fun, easy listen which put the band on the map.Their follow-up album in 2022 ‘Burn The Empire' is a heavier, more in your face record aimed at calling out the system, or rather ‘Burn The Empire'. The title track sets the tone of the attitude of this album alongside ‘The Rodeo'. Although you still see a softer side in ‘End of the Road (Feat. Rachel Chinouriri', the album was a drastic move away from the fun singalong ‘W.L' and is, in my opinion, their weakest album so far.We then move on to ‘Millennials' which was released just under a year ago in 2024. This again was a complete change in the bands sound, going for a more upbeat indie-pop sound filled drum machines and jangly sounding guitars. This was more of a return to the initial familiar sound of The Snuts, with songs ‘Gloria' and ‘Millionaires' being fan favourites, and live set staples. If I were to rank these albums, it would be ‘W.L.', ‘Millennials' and ‘Burn The Empire', and it seems like this is universally mirrored by fans with their debut hitting UK Number 1 in the album charts, ‘Millennials' hitting UK Number 2 and ‘Burn The Empire' hitting UK Number 3.So what next for The Snuts? You can find The Snuts here - https://open.spotify.com/artist/4AzAfQNuAyKOFG4DZMsdAo?si=2kEt_9wyR0OmAeHT7BHDog

NIK KERSHAW - 1980's pop sensation – from Bristol to Stardom

English singer-songwriter, NIK KERSHAW was a 1980s teen idol; he spent 62 weeks on the UK Singles Chart in 1984-5 and beat every other solo artist at the time. He appeared at Live Aid in 1985, and penned a number of hits for other artists, including a UK number one single in 1991 for Chesney Hawkes "The One and Only”. Nik played guitar and sang in a number of underground bands from 76 before deciding on a career as a songwriter. However, he ended up performing his own songs rather than giving them to others, and signed a record deal in 1983, which spawned a debut single, "I Won't Let The Sun Go Down On Me", which just missed out on the UK Top 40. At the beginning of 1984, he made his breakthrough when "Wouldn't It Be Good", which reached Number 4 in the UK charts. He enjoyed three more Top 20 hits from debut album Human Racing, including the title track and a successful re-issue of his debut single, which ultimately proved his biggest hit as a performer when it got to Number 2 in the UK. Nik won multiple awards and attracted admirers for his writing such as Elton John & Eric Clapton. He also gained a huge teenage fanbase; a phenomenon Nik says was extremely difficult to manage. When he released the single "The Riddle", fans and journalists were sent into overdrive, as everyone tried to figure out what the meaning was behind the strange set of circumstances and clues which Nik had put in the verses and chorus. (It later turned out that it was all hastily created nonsense).  In 1985 Nik was among a huge lineup of performers at Live Aid at Wembley Stadium. He tells us that performing there was one of the scariest days of his life.  Soon after, Nik retired from recording music in favour of his original career path as a songwriter. His prowess as a songwriter served him well in 1991 when his song The One And Only, appeared on the soundtrack to the Brittish movie Buddy's Song and in the American film "Doc Hollywood", and provided a UK Number 1 single for the star of the film, Chesney Hawkes (son of the Tremeloes' Chip Hawkes). In 1993 The Hollies had a minor hit with another of his songs, The Woman I Love. 1999 saw the release of the Britpop-styled 15 Minutes; later on a collection of acoustic-led songs and 'EI8HT', a commercial MOR pop album. Nik released Oxymoron, in 2020 and is currently in the process of releasing a series of EPs, Songs from a Shelf.  Nik Kershaw joins me this week as our special guest. As always it's a warm, friendly chat during which surprising things often come up. For more information visit Nik Kershaw's official site at http://www.nikkershaw.net Always happy to hear your comments and feedback too! I hope you enjoy this episode with Nik Kershaw!

The affection for Slade’s music and attitude remains undimmed today, as 1973’s “Merry Christmas Everybody” has gone on to become Britain’s best loved Christmas song. Formed in Wolverhampton in 1966, Slade's chart career spanned 3 decades. Slade were unstoppable throughout the seventies becoming one of Europe's biggest bands, releasing 6 smash hit albums, including three No-1’s, and their hit singles are synonymous with the era. The sensational songwriting partnership of Noddy Holder and Jim Lea provided a soundtrack to the Glam Generation and with a run of 17 consecutive Top 20 singles between 1971 and 1976, no other act of the period experienced such success. In the eighties Slade enjoyed a renaissance, buoyed by a spectacular appearance at the Reading Festival in 1980, their hits included “My oh My” , which reached number 2 in 1983 and a year later with “Run Runaway”, cementing their legacy as one of the UK’s greatest bands. The iconic Slade are one of the most exciting bands to ever come out of Great Britain and this collection serves as testament to the high quality of Slade's unique and distinctive talent.

1987 seems like a long time ago. Margaret Thatcher was re-elected for a third term in government, Everton topped the first division of the football league and Whitney Houston’s ‘I Wanna Dance With Somebody’ became the first UK Number 1 available on CD format. In that year Paul Thompson and Asa Briggs launched the National Life Stories Collection. From its modest beginnings, National Life Stories has grown significantly and helped to create one of the largest oral history collections in the world – the British Library holds some 70,000 recordings of which nearly 3,000 are long, in-depth biographical interviews created by National Life Stories. This year we celebrated our 30th birthday by highlighting in our annual review interviews from each of our main fieldwork projects, introduced by someone connected to that project. We’re also using these articles as a jumping-off point for the newest National Life Stories venture - our podcast. Each pod will bring you a conversation between your hosts Charlie Morgan or David Govier and someone else associated with National Life Stories – from interviewers, to curators, to listening service staff, to technical staff who digitize and care for the analogue recordings. We’ll be using our new medium to surface great interview extracts and try to get to the bottom of what we think is special about the life story approach to oral history. Our first episode takes us back to 1988 when National Life Stories was only a year old. Piper Alpha was an oil rig in the North Sea, north east of Aberdeen. It suffered a huge explosion on the 6th of July 1988 killing 167 people. National Life Stories worked with the University of Aberdeen on the oral history project Lives in the Oil Industry to document the oil industry. In the course of the project we interviewed survivors of the Piper Alpha disaster and other people who were affected by it. Mary Stewart, Oral History Curator, chatted to Dave about the project.
