“There is a voice inside that does not use words. Listen.” ~ Rumi Guest Introduction: Welcome to Exploring the Seasons of Life podcast. I'm your host Cindy MacMillan. I have conversations with coaches, spiritual explorers and thought leaders from all walks of life about beginnings, endings, and the messy bits in-between. Self-love, well-being, and mindset are at the heart of our conversations because once you change the inside, the outside will begin to change as well. In this episode, I'm thrilled to dive into the work of Judith Maxey, whose exploration into alternative and traditional healing practices began while pursuing a Master's degree in Applied Anthropology, exploring the cultural roots of healing. Judith is the owner of Almus Energy Medicine, has been practicing energy medicine for over 15 years. She is an experienced and certified Usui/Holy Fire® and Karuna Reiki® master teacher, mentor, shamanic practitioner, meditation guide and essential oil specialist. In 2023, she also became a certified End-of-Life Doula. Here's a glimpse of our conversation: Welcome Judith. I've really been looking forward to this conversation. Judith: “There's always an underlying level of grief. Right now, I feel, in part because of the pandemic we just simply did not acknowledge the grieving that might have happened. That should have happened because we have a very, in my opinion, narrow perspective on what grief is.” Judith: “I'm a doTERRA wellness advocate, so I use mostly doTERRA oils. I believe in their quality, but I use a Snow Lotus aromatherapy oil that was created by a Five Element Acupuncturist, and it's called Sedate Metal and so from the Chinese medicine perspective. It's about metal and it's very good in fall for the lungs where we hold grief and it is a blend of Copaiba balsam, Atlas cedarwood, Amyris, and Geranium. And I would never even attempt to blend it the way that Peter Holmes does. It's just an amazing blend. I keep it in my office.” Judith: “I'm so happy that there are end-of-life doulas for the person who is passing and also for everyone involved and that's what I found was really there was so much learning in my end of life doula training about that about the interactions between the caregivers and what was happening for everyone how to be aware of the cues and Like everything else, Cindy, again, I feel like I say a certain few things throughout the conversation, but it's about being present.” Judith: “And then I started, in the same community as my Reiki teacher, I'll give her a shout out, Colleen Benelli, Licensed Reiki Teacher, The International Center for Reiki Training. She was also involved in The LightSong Community of 21st Century Shamanism and Energy Medicine. So, I started doing core shamanism training as well.” Judith: “You are meant to use us and, and we're meant to work together. And so, I started bringing in essential oils, the plants to my work. And I just feel like the combination of the shamanic practices that, I'd say in general, allow you to work with larger energies than yourself, Reiki, and the miracle, the magic of the plants, you know, getting to work with those three in a session with someone is a powerhouse. It's so supportive. Judith: “I would suggest, your ceremony be specific to you and what you're comfortable with. And most importantly, what you will actually do. You know, we can look at a lot of different ceremonies, but what calls to you? Do you want to gather in a big crowd? Do you want to gather with your three closest friends? In the darkness, with a candle? Being grateful? Saying out loud what you want to get rid of? You know? I think those elements are the important part. Again, gratitude, community, release, and calling in what you would like for the new year or your life. I'll say that I would suggest those same elements for any ceremony. Judith: “Forgiveness is so much larger than that. A little bit like grief, right?” Judith: “I also want to say that in 2024. I'll be coming out with Plant Speak Retreats, and that's for the doTERRA community to learn how to build relationships, spiritual personal energetic relationships with the oils.” Resource Mentioned: Firewalk Ceremony You can find Judith Maxey at: Website Instagram Mentorship Holistic Living: Embracing Wholeness In Everyday Life Series The Healing Power of Sound Baths with Stephanie Weber Trust in Your Soul with Sonee Singh Empowering Your Inner Wellness Warrior: Insights from Joyce Jimenez Journey of Healing with Alana Keddie Conversation with Julie Jancius: The Angel Medium Confidence is a Journey with Sha Sparks

In this episode, we discuss The Bach Project that featured the legendary cellist Yo-Yo Ma— an event that would explore how culture connects us. We are joined by Peter Holmes à Court who is the Senior Convener at Afrika House, the team that facilitated the project in Nairobi. Peter breaks down what they did to host Yo-Yo Ma in Kenya but also turning that performance into a festival that went beyond its original scope. He also shares the motivations of the teams that brought the project together including the artists that created the posters for the project. Broken Oars Podcast, and your genial hosts Lewin (Southern, oppressive) and Aaron (Northern, oppressed) return ... ... and you'll notice that we're practically fizzing with glee as we do. Why? Because we're joined by Peter Holmes. We are no strangers to hyperbole on Broken Oars Podcast. Our episode blurbs are masterpieces in the art of all of its forms: hyperbole, repetitive hyperbole, deflationary hyperbole, inflationary hyperbole and (our favourite) the sort of hyperbole Han got out of the Millennium Falcon only done with oars. (Give me ten on the legs and horizon this bunch of sadsacks, now ... ! is a call neither of us have ever used (much)). But in this instance, we are somewhat underselling it when we say that Pete is one of rowing's great coaches, thinkers and communicators. Beginning his rowing journey at Latymer, and continuing during his time at Cambridge, Pete's engagement with rowing developed in tandem and conversation with his younger brother, Andy - an individual who remains one of the undersung heroes of British Rowing despite being a double-Olympic champion, fierce and committed competitor and an outstanding oarsman who, among others, inspired the young Matthew Pinsent to take up the sport. Applying the insights about boatmoving that Andy was learning, applying and developing while working with Spracklen and Redgrave as he moved on to teach and coach at Eton, St. Paul's, the University of Manchester and Agecroft, Pete developed a coaching ethos centered on empowering athletes to own and take control of their development and progression by understanding and embracing what actually moves a boat. In this freewheeling, insightful and essential episode we discuss what actually moves a boat - pressure against the pin against the blade - and explore what the logical outcome of this means for the rowing stroke: it is the application of maximum pressure through the arc of the stroke from beginning to end that moves the boat the most efficiently. Breaking down how we can translate that to the actual practise of rowing leads to a fascinating conversation on avoiding coaching mood music; the importance of avoiding fads and fashions; why the first step in any squad journey must be standardising equipment so that it can then be individualised to the rower later in the programme; the importance of knowing why you do the drills you do; why the search for magic bullets is part of human nature but ultimately unproductive ... ... and why the most important question a rower can ask is 'why' (because it leads to the understanding of 'how'). Some of this might be counter-intuitive to modern orthodoxies; it might challenge some preconceptions, but this a masterclass on a par with Drew Ginn's much-heralded episode on Broken Oars. Pete puts a lifetime of knowledge on the art and practice of moving a boat well in this podcast, coaching, what makes a rower, what makes a crew, training, and more beside ... And he's currently not coaching? Someone snap that man up for their programme! Get some! All Eight? Drive the legs like you're kicking a burning dog off you... ----- Try listening to us with a coffee - and if you're feeling generous, stand us one. In Riding with Giants, Peter Holmes à Court demonstrated the honesty and vulnerability to be human, fallible and curious as he searched for his path. His father Robert is credited with being Australia's first billionaire. His mother Janet was more successful than his father. As their oldest child, Peter was involved in investment banking, music and comedy promotion, cattle, trains, finance, Sydney business promotion, writing and he co-owned the South Sydney Rabbitohs rugby team with Russell Crowe among other ventures. His memoir takes it all in and asks the existential question of what it means to be alive as a father, a businessman, a manufacturer, a creator of beauty and meaning, a member of society and a cyclist, who tries something almost entirely new and most assuredly out of his comfort zone.

It's the end of August and it's time to dust off the skates because the Kangaroo Hoppet is back! The Hoppet is part of the World Loppet series and is a 42km XC ski race. Covid canceled the Hoppet in 2020 and 2021, but nothing can stop it this year! 900 participants have signed up to grace the Bogong High Plains and this week we chatted to at least two of them.We were very happy to welcome Peter Holmes to the show and have been hoping to catch him for an interview for quite some time. Pete was one of our lecturers at university during our outdoor education studies and opened the door of telemark, nordic and backcountry skiing to many students. We find out where Pete developed his passion for skiing and how he found his love for teaching. We also get some insight about his business, Nordic Ski adventures, which aims to take guests 'chook footing' to some of the world's most iconic nordic ski destinations. Pete's longtime friend, Blair Hume, also joins the show to heckle him whilst enjoying a few tinnies, but also shares his own stories about growing up with nothing but three-pin bindings and leather boots.

In an episode released on August 12, we addressed the troubling display of poor riding during the equestrian portion of the Modern Pentathlon with Rick Maynard, Tik Maynard, and Peter Holmes - all of whom have been very involved in the sport either currently or previously. Now, we're following up and seeing what's in the works. What proposed changes are coming down the pipeline to help Modern Pentathlon evolve into a sport that can support good riding, good horsemanship, and reasonable expectations of those horses and riders? Are they enough? What aspects of the problem do they address? Canadian National Champion, Development Coach, and member of the Riding Working Task Force, Joshua Riker-Fox, joins us alongside fellow Canadian National Champion Pentathlete Tik Maynard. Along with host Caroline Culbertson, they discuss: - A look inside the proposed changes and what needs to happen next. - What we can learn about making change in our own sports and disciplines. - A case for keeping the equestrian portion in Modern Pentathlon - Personal reflections on how changes happen in sport, who is in charge of them, and what the equestrian community can learn from this turning point in MP.
The show jumping portion of the women's modern pentathlon at the Tokyo Olympics is making headlines - and not in a good way. It was so stressful to watch, there were many rider falls, and lots of stressed out horses who clearly didn't understand what was expected of them. How do we make heads and tails of this? Are there solutions? Host Caroline Culbertson is joined by Tik Maynard, Rick Maynard, and Peter Holmes - who cumulatively have decades of experience in pentathlon as athletes, coaches or course designers - for a roundtable discussion in response to this troubling display of riding.
UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson has announced new rules to try to curb the latest surge in coronavirus cases in England. These include the closure of public spaces like pubs and limits on the number of people at household gatherings. The extent of the restrictions will depend on the severity of outbreaks in different areas. The rules take effect on Wednesday. The city of Liverpool will be among the 50 towns and cities in England covered by the regulations, 44 of them are in the Northern part of the country. The restrictions in these places will depend on the level of risk. Areas in the top of the three tiers will see a ban in household gatherings, and the closure of pubs, bars and other leisure areas Johnson says financial support worth more than a billion dollars will be made available to businesses affected by the new rules. For more, we spoke to Peter Holmes. He's a fellow at the University of Sussex UK Trade Policy Observatory. He joins us from Brighton in the UK. #UKCoronavirus #ThreeTierAlarmSystem #Restrictions

Kristopher's reflections on the art of preaching are based this week on a sermon he preached back in August, 2019 at the Redlands Church. Although it is not the "current" message, it neither is a "re-run." Kristopher will return to the pulpit on October 19 and Behind the Sermon will be "live" once again the following Monday. This episode is about one aspect of calling that is universal for all people, long-lasting, and perhaps the most divisive. As always, this episode features the full recording of the original message along with reflection on how it came to be, what worked, what didn’t work, and everything in between.Author's Note: This was one of the earliest recordings of the podcast and at that time, the working title and segment titles did not match the current format or descriptions. Titus 2v 11 – 14 What does it look like for us to be a people that love Jesus and then love our city well? How do we step into that, bringing not just the hands and feet of Jesus but the actual message and gospel of Jesus to a city that needs Him, His transformative power, and His life? Executive Pastor Tim McDonald helps to answer that question by walking us through Titus 2 v11 – 14. Joined by our Community Life Pastor, Peter Holmes, and our Youth Pastor, Keithen Schwahn, they talk about Alpha, a practical tool that has quickly become a beautiful way to bring the good news of Jesus to those that need to hear it.
Peter Holmes was prop master from Captain Scarlet until Space Precinct, and in this archive recording from 1992 he discusses his roles from those early days up to Terrahawks. Plus the usual news, Randomiser, the voice of the Podsterons and a discucssion about human hand bloopers!

Some sounds go back… way back. In this edition of Sound Matters, we travel to a time before music was music, when man-made sounds allowed us mere mortals to hear the voices of the gods – when the line between making music and making magic meant a whole lot more than just putting together your next party mix playlist. Host Tim Hinman takes us to meet musician and composer Barnaby Brown, who specialises in recreating sounds from long-forgotten instruments, and Peter Holmes, an engineer and trumpet player who rebuilds ancient metal instruments, played by ancient civilisations. http://www.beoplay.com/soundmatters @beoplay #beoplay #soundmatters

This seminar explores the role of the ‘accidental design professional’ in improving work design. Many people who don’t typically see themselves as work designers actually have a powerful influence on work safety, from CEOs, to IT professionals to HR executives. Exploring the role of the ‘accidental design professional’ in improving work design, this seminar examines how well-designed, healthy and safe work enables workers to have more productive lives. President of the Risk Engineering Society Geoff Hurst, Ergonomist Barbara McPhee, and Peter Holmes from National Australia Bank will discuss how to implement the ten principles of good work design in practice. Our experts will explore how good work design can radically transform the workplace in ways that benefit the business, workers, clients and others in the supply chain, while failure to consider how work is designed is a lost opportunity to innovate and improve the efficiency of work.
The poem In Flanders Field by John McCrae was largely responsible for beginning the tradition of wearing red poppies for remembrance. Peeking over the gardens of Colchester is a giant sunflower grown by Malcolm Bacon. This 11ft 3in Russian Giant is in the running for Thompson & Morgan’s UK’s tallest sunflower competition. Peter Holmes has been out in the north Essex town to see if he can spot it.
