A Jazz Homily: How Old Testament Law Shapes Beautiful Communities with Guest Dr. Mark GlanvilleExodus 3:7-12This jazz-talk uses blues and jazz music explore the biblical law in the Old Testament, unpacking the significance for incarnational churches today. There are parallels between the development of blues and jazz and the development of biblical law: both have their roots in the atrocity of slavery. Blues and jazz developed in the oppression of slavery and of the reconstruction era in the U.S. Biblical law emerged from the atrocity of slavery in Egypt. This talk unfolds the invitation in biblical law by looking at three laws in Deuteronomy, reflecting how they can shape the church today to reflect the tenderness of Jesus.Dr Mark Glanville (PhD, Trinity College, BristolI, UK) is the Director of the Centre for Missional Leadership at St. Andrews Hall, University of British Columbia, Vancouver. Mark trains leaders for post-Christian contexts, using biblical scholarship and jazz piano. Before pastoring, Mark worked full time as a jazz pianist. He currently plays on the Vancouver jazz scene, and he hosts the Blue Note Theology podcast. Mark is an Aussie: he likes to express his masculinity by snapping a crocodile's neck with two fingers.

Those in Christian circles have likely spent many a Sunday morning sitting in a pew (or, perhaps, a more comfortable seat) listening to someone preach. While the length of sermon or its place in a service may vary from denomination to denomination, or pastor to pastor, the act of hearing the Word of God preached regularly is part of the Christian tradition. We were please to speak to Mark Glanville about this topic. Mark is a pro at sermons, quite literally. Having spent much of his career preaching sermons as well as teaching classes on the subject, he has decades of broad experience from which he draws. Mark is an author, podcaster, Director of the Centre for Missional Leadership, and jazz pianist. We spoke to Mark about his latest book, Preaching in a New Key: Crafting Expository Sermons in Post-Christian Communities, which came out this spring. This book is a guide of sorts for those new to sermon writing as well as those who are wanting to find a fresh and new approach to the task. Our conversation touched on the holistic nature of sermon writing as well as how it can be approached in the post-Christian world many communities of faith find themselves in. It is hopeful and beautiful and worth reading, even if you don't happen to be a pastor yourself. You can check out Mark's many projects on his website, which has links to his books, podcast, and social media. If you're in the Vancouver area, we highly encourage you to check out Mark's book launch for Preach in a New Key, coming up May 23, at St. Andrew's-Wesley United Church. This unique event includes art, storytelling, and Mark's jazz trio.

What are my spiritual gifts and how do I unlock them? What does the Bible say about the various spiritual gifts? How do I partner with the Holy Spirit? How do I bless the church with my gifts? How does trauma interfere with my understanding or use of my gift? In this conversation we bring our series to a close as Tim Sherrill joins to discuss how to use the gifts of the Holy Spirit. Many people do not know what their gifts are or how to use them. One thing is certain, we are made to function using God's Spirit. Tim has conducted Spiritual Gift classes for our local congregation as well as others. His approach to helping people find their spiritual gifts is based in scripture as well as experience. Tim and Wendy Sherrill were high school sweethearts and were married in 1979. Over the last 39 years, the Sherrills have led in varying capacities in churches in Detroit, MI; Phila, PA; Seattle, WA; Fort Wayne, IN; and Omaha, NE. They and their family have helped churches across the Midwest grow and be healthy. Today, Tim and Wendy lead the Omaha Church and live to seek and save the lost. When they are not doing that you will probably find them watching classic movies. They have three disciple kids, two in Texas and one in Minnesota and four grandkids, a daughter-in-law and a son-in-law. Prior to being on staff in churches before 2008, Tim worked for Progressive Insurance for 23 years moving around to various locations and management opportunities, including working with industry associations and political affairs assignments. Wendy has worked professionally in real estate and many volunteer jobs at schools. Tim holds a B.S. degree in Health Administration from Eastern Michigan University (1983) and a Masters in Religious Education in MIssional Leadership from Rochester University in Rochester, Michigan (2019).

All in all, Heart for Lebanon continues to counter hate with love, radical thinking with a message of peace, and despair with hope in Christ alone. This can best be done by raising a new generation of disciples after God's own heart; servant leaders living the Gospel message and being the hand and feet of Jesus. This is exactly what we are doing through our Missional Leadership Program. In Episode 287, we continue the exploration of missional leadership. This conversation revolves around the concept of defining your mission field and forging relationships that hold the potential to change lives - starting with your own. The episode begins by highlighting the seven fundamental missional questions that serve as guideposts for crafting purposeful leadership. These questions facilitate a deep understanding of the mission and purpose of the church, the assets and needs of the community, and the critical role of relationships in the transformative process. At the core of the discussion lies the notion of discerning and defining one's mission field. Unlike a mere demographic analysis, this approach emphasizes the significance of field-testing the insights and building relationships. Authentic relationships, rather than statistics, become the bedrock of missional leadership. This shift toward relational engagement is highlighted as the third aspect of missional leadership, following previous explorations of other aspects in earlier podcast episodes. REFLECTION QUOTES “The special mark of the modern world is not that it is skeptical, but that it is dogmatic without knowing it. The moderns believe without knowing what they believe—and without even knowing that they do believe it.” ~G.K. Chesterton (1874-1936), English writer and literary critic “If your heart beats for Christ the king, then your heart will beat for the advance of the His rule.” ~Rhys Bezzant, Dean of Missional Leadership at Ridley College (Australia) “To me science is a flirt with the unknown. We're trying to figure things out, but there's so much going on right now, all around us, that's invisible to the eye, and science is kind of is a bridge to this mystery, and by walking on this bridge we kind of have a better sense of who we are.” ~Marcelo Gleiser, Dartmouth professor, as quoted in the Valley News 3-20-2019 “Our pleasure and our duty, Though opposite before; Since we have seen his beauty, Are joined to part no more: It is our highest pleasure, No less than duty's call; To love him beyond measure, And serve him with our all.” ~John Newton (1725-1801), English clergyman and abolitionist “To see the Law by Christ fulfilled, And hear his pard'ning voice; Changes a slave into a child, And duty into choice.” ~William Cowper (1731-1800), English poet, one of the most popular poets of his time SERMON PASSAGE Matthew 28:18-20, Ephesians 1:15-23, Ephesians 4:10-16 (ESV) Matthew 28 18 And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” Ephesians 1 15 For this reason, because I have heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love toward all the saints, 16 I do not cease to give thanks for you, remembering you in my prayers, 17 that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of him, 18 having the eyes of your hearts enlightened, that you may know what is the hope to which he has called you, what are the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints, 19 and above every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the one to come. 22 And he put all things under his feet and gave him as head over all things to the church, 23 which is his body, the fullness of him who fills all in all. Ephesians 4 10 He who descended is the one who also ascended far above all the heavens, that he might fill all things.) 11 And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers, 12 to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, 13 until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ, 14 so that we may no longer be children, tossed to and fro by the waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by human cunning, by craftiness in deceitful schemes. 15 Rather, speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ, 16 from whom the whole body, joined and held together by every joint with which it is equipped, when each part is working properly, makes the body grow so that it builds itself up in love.
