Playliste: Kira & The Kindred Spirits - Losing you Bikstok Røgsystem feat. Erik Clausen - Fabrik U$O - Vil du, vil du Moi Caprice - To the lighthouse Moi Caprice - Thieves like us Figurines - Silver ponds Carpark North - Human Carpark North - The beasts The Raveonettes - Love in a trashcan Coolsville - Det gælder Per Vers - Black power D-A-D - Scare yourself Jens Unmack - Happy ending (I den her verden vil jeg ikke være trist) Diefenbach - Favourite friend Tue West - Tankespind Tue West - Vent på min sange Tina Dickow - Nobody's man Tina Dickow - The city Nephew - Byens hotel

Jess Frazier from Notre Dame University shares how they used custom LEGO figurines to increase engagement on the university's admissions Instagram. They rebranded their admitted student days as 'The Rally' and created a dedicated space where students could build Lego replicas of themselves wearing Notre Dame gear. The goal was to make students feel immediately welcomed into the Notre Dame family. This tactic was highly successful, with a 102% increase in engagement compared to the same admitted student post last year, 226,000 views on the LEGO reel—from 94% non-followers! Find out on this week's PlayingFTSE Show! Steve and Steve are talking stocks to consider buying this week. There's some news left over from last time and three more to add to the watchlists. We've had a request from a viewer on Spotify to talk about Games Workshop. Steve W has been looking at this one and there's a lot to like about the company. Strong intellectual property makes for some attractive economics. But why does Steve think it will upset both value investors and dividend investors? Steve D has been hunting for bargains and the place he's been looking is Ollie's Bargain Outlet. Discount retail is in at the moment and this is a stock we've looked at before. Strong growth from new stores as well as some more affluent customers refusing to trade back up as inflation subsides is pushing things along. Is the stock (or Five Below) a buy? Rentokil Initial isn't a stock we've talked about on the show before, but it's catching Steve W's attention. Pest control is about as acyclical as it gets, but the stock is down big. A potentially transformative acquisition is the reason, but could the damage to the balance sheet be temporary? And after a 7% rally, is it too late for UK investors to get buying? MongoDG is a database software business that's on the move higher. Stock-based compensation is growing swiftly, but so is the overall business. A big drop might be an opening for the Steves to start taking an interest. With the industry in a cyclical downtrend, could it be time to make a move with others on the sidelines? Nomoli figurines are among the earliest works of art from Sierra Leone. The figurines and similar stone sculptures are the only known remains of an empire that existed hundreds of years ago in what is now Sierra Leone and Liberia. Portuguese explorers first recorded the existence of the figurines in the fifteenth century. Nomoli figurines are often associated with the Mende people as they are often buried on Mende land. The Mende and Kissi people of Sierra Leone place these small statues near their homes and in fields of crops as a form of protection, in the belief that the Nomoli figurines will give them good health and good harvests. They also consult the statues as oracles. During the 20th century, Sierra Leonean immigrants brought their ancestors' Nomoli figurines with them to the United States as a way to preserve the spiritual powers of the past.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-x-zone-radio-tv-show--1078348/support.

Victoria Hislop joins Simon Mayo and Matt Williams for a natter about her latest novel. They discuss the draw of Greek islands, the history of Figurines and what inspired her for this latest book. The history of Greece is vast - and Figurines are a small, but important and fascinating part of it. They're mysterious and beautiful - and they're very sought after too. Here comes the science bit: In her irresistible new novel, Sunday Times No 1 bestselling author Victoria Hislop shines a light on the questionable acquisition of cultural treasures and the price people - and countries - will pay to cling on to them. Of all the ancient art that captures the imagination, none is more appealing than the Cycladic figurine. An air of mystery swirls around these statuettes from the Bronze Age and they are highly sought after by collectors - and looters - alike. When Helena inherits her grandparents' apartment in Athens, she is overwhelmed with memories of the summers she spent there as a child, when Greece was under a brutal military dictatorship. Her remote, cruel grandfather was one of the regime's generals and as she sifts through the dusty rooms, Helena discovers an array of valuable objects and antiquities. How did her grandfather amass such a trove? What human price was paid for them? Her desire to find answers about her heritage dovetails with a growing curiosity for archaeology, ignited by a summer spent with volunteers on a dig on an Aegean island. Their finds fuel her determination to protect the precious fragments recovered from the baked earth - and to understand the origins of her grandfather's collection. Helena's attempt to make amends for some of her grandfather's actions sees her wrestle with the meaning of 'home', both in relation to looted objects of antiquity ... and herself. 34 Circe Salon -- Make Matriarchy Great Again -- Disrupting History
According to Marija Gimbutas, "During the sixth millennium B.C., the Old Europeans developed a writing system; like many other Old European achievements, writing grew out of religious symbols and signs." How did this writing system work and what was its function? And why has its primacy and importance been overlooked by scholars?Join us as we discuss this topic with Miriam Robbins Dexter, Ph.D., who holds a B.A. in Classics and a Ph.D. in Indo-European Studies (comparative linguistics, archaeology and mythology) from the University of California, Los Angeles. Her friend and colleague, Vicki Noble, a regular member of the Make Matriarchy Great Again team, joins the discussion.Sean Marlon Newcombe and Dawn "Sam" Alden co-host

What's missing in your life? Deep level stuff like love, connection, self-worth?Tracy McCubbin believes that we over shop, over save, and over anti-age ourselves because something is missing and we try to fill it.For the sandwich generation—that's us right—we have places galore to find clutter. The obvious, our parents homes as they downsize or even pass away. Not so obvious is empty nest syndrome where a woman who identified for so many years as mom, and all that entails, finds herself with huge swaths of time to fill. Nothing wrong with finding things to fill that time but shopping isn't the answer. We talked about the gut-wrenching task of handling the collected stuff of our parents' lives. Figurines, old cards, books, even pictures may have great meaning to them but not to you. Tracy has suggestions about going through things with them and what to do with stuff you feel bad getting rid of once they move into assisted living or eventually when they die. When thinking about giving things to the “right place” Tracy said, “What I'm saying is trust. When you let go of it, it'll end up where it's supposed to be.”One of the ways that Tracy's decluttering process is different is that she approaches the work she does with clients from a psychological and emotional place. One really important point: if you are holding on to something because you think it's worth enough to fund your retirement, rather than hoping Antiques Roadshow is going to crown you one of the lucky ones, get things appraised. Most things we think are worth a bundle aren't. Tracy did not mention this company but I have used them and they are terrific—and affordable and online. It's called Value My Stuff. For $35 (at the time of this episode) you can get all manner of things appraised by experts. Simply upload pictures, tell them as much as you can, and in 2 days you'll have your answer.Live with a cluttery kind of person but you're not one?Tracy has a solution. “I joke all the time. I'm like, marriage counseling is included with my services. You know, the important thing to remember is that someone is very cluttery, they probably heard it their whole life. So how do you have a conversation without shaming them? Right? Like going into it with my way is right and your way is wrong.= So the conversation I always start with is, our home is a tool and is it working for us? Can we find what we need?”We even talked about holding on to feelings that don't serve us but do serve to clutter up our self-confidence. This can result in analysis paralysis rather than taking a risk, trying something new.I asked her how we know if we are crossing over into too much clutter land?“A couple things to pay attention to. Can you neaten up a room like. your office or the kitchen in 20 minutes or less, can you kind of put everything back in its homes? If it takes you more than 20 minutes to sort of put a room back together. That's a really good litmus test for the stuff is getting at the upper hand also, Are you finding yourself not going into rooms? Like is there a guest room that you just don't even go into? Is there a garage you don't park your car in? How do you use your house? What's working? Ultimately our homes are a tool.”Tracy grew up with family members who hoarded and knows firsthand that the effects of living amongst an accumulation of possessions goes far beyond the home's walls. Because of this she shared that as people age this disease can hide health concerns so get help if you know someone who has hoarder...

We had the pleasure of interviewing gigi over Zoom video!Breakout artist gigi gives a tour de force vocal performance on her new single, ”Figurines,” released today via Mogul Vision/Interscope Records. On the dreamy, self-penned track, which she recorded in Nashville, gigi examines mortality and the process of forging one's own path. Mike Zara and Aidan Hobbs produced and play on “Figurines,” combining haunting keyboards with plaintive guitar and adding accordion and saxophone as the song builds to an emotional close. “'Figurines' is about the circle of life, fear of death, and the lengths people go to immortalize themselves. There are many areas of my life I can point in my early development that have influenced this sort of existential thorn i have. Your brain is a hard drive and you can never erase anything from it. Your experiences are with you always but you can work past them. Writing about my fears of mortality help me come to terms with it myself,” said gigi. Born in New Jersey, raised in Florida and now based in Brooklyn, gigi is currently on her first national tour, providing direct support on Noah Cyrus' North American run. After sharing the track “Sometimes (Backwood)” on TikTok in 2021, she released the single independently. It racked up 18 million streams in the first six months and combined global streams now surpass 72 million. Hailing gigi as “one of Gen Z's breakout artists,” Medium tracked the song's organic growth in this feature, and said, “[‘Sometimes (Backwood)'] is a torrent of raw emotion…Let's see what gigi does next.” “Figurines” is the latest in a remarkable string of follow-up singles from gigi that include “The Man,” “When She Smiles” and “Glue.” Depicting the life of a queer twenty-something with raw honesty and all-enveloping beauty, the songs showcase her blunt yet tender poetry amid windswept landscapes of acoustic guitars, swooping strings and delicate reverb.
