Ep. 14 Kelly Metras, co-owner of Salena's Mexican Restaurant, Salena's Taqueria, Nox, and co-founder of BOSSY, is someone that is pessimistically optimistic, believing that it is our job as local business owners to make our communities better. She believes that community engagement should be the primary focus of businesses, as we are only as strong as the community that we do business in; if our communities are failing to thrive, it is a direct reflection of the businesses surrounding them. In 2014, Kelly created BOSSY with fellow entrepreneur Kelly Bush, in response to dealing with the complexities of working in a male dominated industry. The goal of BOSSY is to support and lift women business owners in their community, helping to make sure all voices are at the table. In 2015, Kelly founded RYCE (Rochester Youth Culinary Experience) which developed and opened a full-service restaurant with a group of 12 high school students from a culinary program in the City of Rochester. The program was discontinued for many reasons, which she will gladly talk about if you ask, but the lessons learned, and the insight gained, remain a huge part of the growth plan for her current businesses. Kelly's belief in a community centered approach is reflected in all of her life choices. She is cautious and aware of how her money is recycled back into the local economy, and supports grassroots organizations in any way that she can, often through advertising dollars and partnerships. The focus of many of these partnerships is to assist those on the front lines lifting community members that are disproportionately affected by deep-seeded racist policies and practices. Kelly's passion is to continue to meet new people doing amazing things, and to connect us all so that we can all thrive. Season 2 Episode 13 I'm sure you're thinking "It must be nice to be co-founder of Bossy ROC and owner of three businesses." But in this episode, you'll learn how Kelly Bush went from dreaming of a life of fame in the arts to running a bar; and how her ability to improv got her through tumultuous life events; both physically and emotionally.  Kelly Bush never thought she would become a business owner, as she was sure she was going to be a performer. After watching the movie Dirty Dancing, Kelly was inspired to write a script for a new version of the movie with her as the lead. She eventually went into business with her husband Don when they bought Marshall Street Bar and Grill. She also has a consulting business that helped other women navigate the pandemic. As a childless wife and woman business owner, Kelly has experienced the challenge of being in spaces dominated by mompreneurs, but she has learned to fill her space with different things. "If anyone out there is a business owner and not a mother, a woman business owner, it's something I've struggled with before because I felt like there was like two years where every bossy happy hour, like half of the time spent was talking about what it's like to manage your home with your children and your business. And I would just sit there and get smaller and smaller and like, I can't contribute here." ABOUT THE INTERVIEWEE: Kelly Bush is a multi-business owner in Rochester, NY. She and her husband, Don, co-own Marshall Street Bar and Grill and the Union Tavern. Kelly owns K & B Consulting and is the co-founder of BOSSY.  Kelly graduated from college with a degree in technical theatre and design. It had been her dream since childhood to be on stage, on and behind the scenes. When she realized that the long hours and unpredictable schedule did not work for her or her anxiety. She left the professional theatre world and began her career as a Behavioral Specialist at a therapeutic, day treatment school.  It was here that she became close with Kelly Metras, a casual friend that came on as a Special Ed Teacher. During their time there, the Kelly's became important and essential supports for each other, which continued on as they transitioned into small business owners. It was during this time that BOSSY was formed.  Kelly has served as President of the local chapter of the NYS Restaurant Association and currently holds a board seat with the state association. She is an active board member of her neighborhood and business associations and spends her limited free time hanging with her husband (outside of work) and playing with her sweet pup, Lincoln.   Connect with Bossy: Instagram: @BossyRoc Website: www.bossyroc.com   Thank you to our Sponsors:   Gallery Salon 4 Elton Street, Rochester, NY 14607 www.galleryhair.com   Salena's Mexican Restaurant at Village Gate 302 N Goodman St, Rochester, NY 14607    Union Tavern 4565 Culver Rd, Rochester, NY 14622   This episode is supported by Riverside.fm, the leading platform to record studio quality audio or video podcasts. Episode 6 Do you want clarity, focus, and balance in your business? Jordan Betts, owner of Need Salon is sharing the solution so that you can get all three. In this episode we also cover: 1. The importance of leading with compassion in business. 2. The challenges of being a single mom and business owner. 3. The need to take time for oneself in order to be successful in business Sponsored by Gallery Salon & Mofil Services  Hosted by Co-Founders Kelly Bush and Kelly Metras, multiple businesses owners in male-dominated industries. After years of not feeling heard or understood, they created BOSSY, a networking and support group for over 500 women business owners in Rochester, NY.   Hey Folks, my name is Jordan and I am a researcher of life. From my first business plan 13-years-ago to my current direction in business I've held strong to one thing: "You're never truly successful until you give back" - Napoleon Hill. I am an international educator for the Beauty Industry. I have flown around this country and beyond to teach other providers and business owners how they too, can build a business that offers them a work/life harmony.   I spent 13 years building a business, jumping into the next great idea I've had, over and over again. It's my joy, it's my life, it's my addiction. I've learned to not let your business dreams take away from your life dreams. Don't let it take from YOU. Don't let the "shoulds" and "have-to's" take away from your core, your true self, the reason you started your business in the first place.   You can find me on social media, @jordangbetts and you can find my space at @needsalonroc or www.needsalonroc.com, and check out our education path at @universal_beautyacademy.    RESOURCES: Social Media Handles: @jordangbetts @needsalonroc @universal_beautyacademy @BossyRoc @Jazzytonair   Websites: www.needsalonroc.com www.MoFilServices.com www.GalleryHair.com www.BossyRoc.com     BOSSY RETREAT Bossy Build and Balance Retreat in Geneva, NY October 16 - 19 2022. Episode 3 Do you find yourself overwhelmed and stressed from working all the time and not having any time for yourself? Then this episode is for you! As a female business owner, Asa Shutts has to juggle a lot of balls - and when personal tragedy hits, she has to get creative to keep her business afloat. In this episode, you will learn: 1. How Asa's business has adapted in response to COVID-19 2. What it is like to produce a virtual event 3. How to manage time and handle stress as a business owner   Asa Shutts is a professional photographer and videographer who owns and operates Shuts Productions and Shutter and Splice. She has over 20 years of experience in the industry and has worked with a variety of clients, from weddings and newborns to corporate events and nonprofits.     "We just do!" - Asa Shutts   There are a lot of unexpected things happening in the personal life of the owner of a photography business. She has to deal with it all at the same time as running her own business. Her son was diagnosed with a rare genetic disorder. Her dad died in April and her other son had a car accident and broke his neck. After her father died, Asa had three weddings to shoot in one weekend. One of the dads in the wedding party reminded her of her own dad.   As a child, she spent hours in her grandfather's basement looking through old black and white photos. When she went to college, she studied sculpture. And 20 years later, she met her husband, and they started doing video projects together. They started their business ten years ago and she added photo back into it.   She recounts a story of a recent wedding they shot, which took place on a horse ranch in Wyoming. Despite the challenges posed by COVID-19, they were able to turn the event into a family vacation and produce stunning photos and videos of the event.   If you want to start a business as a photographer or videographer, you have to be tenacious, willing to work two jobs and be hungry and know what you're doing. The market is over saturated with photographers in every genre. The thing that's kept Asa Shutts in business is the fact that she can do photo, video, corporate and personal. She doesn't touch boudoir, unless you are a very dear friend who has mastered a few key poses.   www.shuttsproductions.com www.shutterandsplice.com 607-591-9737   BOSSY RETREAT!
