What does it mean to be a bodhisattva in the 21st century? In the Buddhist tradition, a Bodhisattva is someone whose pursuit of enlightenment has become inseparable from the enlightenment of other beings, and have dedicated their lives (multiple lifetimes, in fact) to practicing compassion and helping others to wake up — even postponing their own “final” enlightenment until all other beings have become similarly awakened. In this episode Ryan and Corey are joined by our very good friend Vincent Horn, co-founder of Buddhist Geeks, in order to discuss Ryan and Vince's decision to fully embrace the Bodhisattva Vow in their lives and in their spiritual practice. What unfolds is a fun and fascinating conversation about compassion, commitment, purpose, meaning, and skillful means — as well as some much-needed guidance to help us bring ourselves into deeper alignment with our own inner Bodhisattva, regardless of whatever spiritual tradition (or lack thereof!) that we find ourselves in.

Why Metadharma? is an unusual episode of the Deconstructing Yourself podcast, in that it’s Part 2 of a joint interview between Vince and Michael Taft. Part 1 appeared on the Buddhist Geeks podcast recently, and they continue the conversation here. The topic of these discussions is a subject that both speakers are actively developing, called “metadharma.” In brief, metadharma refers to the many different ways that the dharma is being adapted, remixed, and redefined to meet the unique challenges and opportunities of the current moment.Vincent Horn is part of a new generation of teachers & translators exploring dharma in the age of the network. A computer engineering dropout turned full-time contemplative, he spent his 20s co-founding the ground-breaking Buddhist Geeks Podcast, while simultaneously doing a full year, in total, of silent retreat practice. Vincent began teaching in 2010 having been authorized in both the Pragmatic Dharma lineage of Kenneth Folk, and by Trudy Goodman, guiding teacher of InsightLA, in the Insight Meditation tradition. Vincent has been called a “power player of the mindfulness movement” by Wired magazine and was featured in Wired UK’s “Smart List: 50 people who will change the world.” He currently lives in the Blue Ridge Mountains outside of Asheville, North Carolina with his partner Emily Horn and their son Zander.More about the Buddhist Geeks farm here.Listen to David Chapman talk about metasystematicity here.

Today's episode is a cross-post from Vincent Horn’s new podcast, Crypto-Mind.  With permission, I’ve reposted it from  Crypto-Mind podcast.  This podcast is about contemplating deeply the societal, spiritual, network implications of the networked Web 3.0 world. This episode is all about networks.  Specifically, What’s it mean to be a part of the network? Why are networks important? How do we organize ourselves? How do we identify ourselves? What’s it mean to create value and distribute that value? Which network do I want to put value into? How much what's happening to cryptocurrency is _just what’s happening in the world_ reflected back into crypto? The big network is Life and all life that we know. Making connections there seems really important. Is it ethical to run a bitcoin node in a world where there is climate change? Is POS a moral eventuality? How a simple Google bus is an analogy for a new world and a lightning rod for some.  Taking the model of the king and democratizing it some. If you are a good entrepreneur you are king. You have followers.  Take that model and took it apart so everyone can be king in their own way.  The rise of mindfulness when attention becomes a constraint. In this episode, Marco and Caroline formulate their responses to the Buddhist Geeks podcast episode "Secularizing Buddhist Ethics" with Vincent Horn and Stephen Batchelor. Caroline explains how her understanding of the ways consciousness materially evolves in complex systems—via Douglas Hofstadter of Gödel, Escher, Bach: An Eternal Golden Braid and Maturana/Varela's Santiago School Theory of Cognition—intersects profoundly with her understanding of Buddhism. Caroline has been practicing and studying Buddhism since having a discrete transcendental experience in 2010. In this lively "inter-view," Marco and Caroline explore the notion of treating any and every body as though they are you; the problematic aspects of the "you are not your body" teaching in Eastern mystic tradition; and the potential for realizing "heaven on Earth" through particular actionable frameworks of relating to one another. Emily Horn and Vincent Horn are meditation teachers and partners in running the Buddhist Geeks organization. In the first part of this special series, Emily and Vincent describe the growth of Buddhist Geeks from a podcast to a conference to a community. They share some of the design principles that have shaped earlier projects and continue to shape their thinking today. And finally they do a live post-mortem analysis of their last project, the Buddhist Geeks Community. In the process they explore the way that Buddhism is changing in the 21st century--with such a collision of perspectives--and how Buddhist Geeks is a small reflection of that cultural process. Join our host Manoush Zomorodi for a "digital detox" at the intersection of Buddhism and technology. Because, you see, Manoush is an addict. A Pinterest addict. Like many tech lovers who find it hard to unplug, she couldn't manage to power off her iPad during a recent home renovation project: "Just one more pin of Scandinavian kitchens or herringbone hardwood floors," she would plead with herself. The solution, she discovered, was what we're calling a "digital detox," a sort of juice-cleanse for the mind (minus the cayenne-lemonade). This week on New Tech City, you'll hear strategies and science from two experts about building a more purposeful approach to email and smartphones, on how to strengthen your IRL relationships and even rediscover the wonder of your neighborhood or town.  Priya Parker of Thrive Labs is a visioner who helps companies and leaders set goals and innovate in part by questioning the use of technology. You'll hear her tips for how to identify your core purpose and make sure tech is a tool — not an impediment — as you work to stay true to that purpose. You'll also hear from Vincent Horn, co-founder of Buddhist Geeks, a podcast/company/conference that seeks to bridge the gap between spiritual practice and technology. Stay to the end of our podcast for a special mini-meditation session led by Horn.   Alternately, if you have just one minute, this video is a fun motivational pitch for attempting to take control of your digital vices.  Some music in this episode provided by Podington Bear from the Sound of Picture Production Library.
