Which countries are best positioned to thrive in the 21st century? No, it's not Denmark. Nor China. According to Parag Khanna, the Singapore based geo-strategist, the three countries that top what he calls The Periodic Table of States are Germany, Japan and Switzerland. And the United States of America, Khanna says, going against conventional wisdom, isn't far behind. Khanna's analysis describes a "post-Westphalian world" where non-state actors like corporations and diasporas hold significant influence. Khanna challenges the more conventional rankings of countries by incorporating climate resilience, governance quality, and economic stability alongside traditional metrics into his Periodic Table. The 5 KEEN ON AMERICA takeaways from our conversation with Khanna* Traditional power metrics are insufficient for measuring state stability - Khanna's "Periodic Table of States" incorporates factors like climate resilience, governance quality, and institutional effectiveness alongside conventional metrics.* Small states often outperform large powers in stability - Switzerland, Germany, and Japan top the rankings while large nations like India, Brazil, and Russia fall into the second tier.* We live in a "post-Westphalian" world where non-state actors (corporations like Google, diaspora networks, and even organized crime) wield significant power beyond traditional nation-state frameworks.* Migration management varies significantly across governance systems - Khanna notes that non-democratic states like UAE and Singapore have effectively managed high immigration rates while democratic nations have struggled politically with migration issues.* A "neo-Hanseatic league" of small, innovative states (like Estonia, Singapore, and Israel) is emerging as a powerful network outside traditional alliance structures, forming their own connections through academic exchanges, free labor mobility, and economic partnerships.Parag Khanna is Founder & CEO of AlphaGeo, the leading AI-powered geospatial analytics platform. He is the internationally bestselling author of seven books including MOVE: Where People Are Going for a Better Future (2021), preceded by The Future is Asian: Commerce, Conflict & Culture in the 21st Century (2019), as well as a trilogy of books on the future of world order beginning with The Second World: Empires and Influence in the New Global Order (2008), followed by How to Run the World: Charting a Course to the Next Renaissance (2011), and concluding with Connectography: Mapping the Future of Global Civilization (2016). He is also the author of Technocracy in America: Rise of the Info-State (2017) and co-author of Hybrid Reality: Thriving in the Emerging Human-Technology Civilization (2012). Parag Khanna (climate migration expert; AI founder) is a global strategist who forecasts human movement around the world and has a company, Climate Alpha, that predicts real estate values based on exposure to climate risk. He's also recently published a book - MOVE: The Forces Uprooting Us - that details how billions of us will be migrating, and living nomadically, within this century.Parag has been named one of Esquire's "75 Most Influential People of the 21st Century" and featured in Wired magazine's "Smart List" and has written several books on empires, global order, the future of conflict and migration… you get the drift. As fertility declines and large slabs of the planet go underwater or become too hot and too uninsurable (in a property sense), we're left to ask, where in the world should we live? And, should we bother “investing” in real estate anymore? Parag answers both, plus how we should be future-proofing our kids and why the best place to live is where the young people are flocking.SHOW NOTESVisit Parag's website to learn more and find all his books hereCatch up on my recent episode on Doughnut Economics with Kate RaworthHere's the Substack post I wrote explaining fertility collapse where you can also post further questions you might have. Skipped #yaysofourlives this week as we've had some builders at home which don't create the loveliest background noises for podcasting, but today's guest well and truly makes up for the gap. It's been probably nearly eight years since I first heard of Holly Ransom and started closely following her journey but today was the very first time I've had the privilege of chatting with her directly. If she'd been inspiring and influencing me from afar with her intellect, drive and leadership, her impact was tenfold in this conversation and I feel so lucky to be able to share that with some of you. Holly has about as much difficulty describing what she does as I do but that's probably why we get along so well facing a lifelong inability not to try everything and anything (and all at once). She is a specialist in disruptive strategy, a private company director and advocate for social and economic inclusion, a businesswoman, a globally recognised speaker, podcaster and just this year also an author. Starting with an Arts/Law degree for similar reasons as I did, Holly's born flair for leadership and insatiable curiosity ultimately led her away from the law and into a constantly evolving career path with more accolades than I have time to list here. She was named one of Australia's 100 Most Influential Women by the Australian Financial Review, she has delivered a Peace Charter to the Dalai Lama, interviewed Barack Obama on stage and was Sir Richard Branson's nominee for Wired Magazine's ‘Smart List' of Future Game Changers to watch in 2017. In 2019 she was awarded the US Embassy's Eleanor Roosevelt Award for Leadership Excellence. She won the Fulbright Scholarship to complete her Masters at Harvard University from which she graduated and has now poured the culmination of all those experiences into a fabulous book, The Leading Edge. I'll let her tell you the rest herself in the most articulate and engaging words! Guest OverviewThis week's guest was named as a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum, was featured in WIRED's Smart List and Founder of Fine Acts a global creative activist platform. Welcome Yana Buhrer Tavanier. We cover a lot of ground in this episode. Yana discusses the impact of being born in Communist Bulgaria, being driven at an early age to confront injustice using words and recounts the influence and inspiration of her Aunt who resisted the regime through art and humor but was tortured by the and imprisoned in a mental institution leading her to ultimately to take her own life at 37. Yana describes how her family conditioned her to live by values and not by the rules imposed by the state and how this led her to investigative journalism exposing social and human rights abuses, using her writing as a weapon against injustice. Yana explains how her work to expose the inhumane and degrading treatment in mental institutions resulted in her being nominated as a World Economic Forum Young Global leaderYana explains why she evolved from journalism to activism. She recounts her early collaborations with artists to use art as a powerful communication tool to generate empathy. She explains how this led to her forming her activism organization Fine Acts, a non profit creative studio for social impact that leverages the power of play in the process of creating their campaigns. Yana describes her team fuse this with Hope-Based Communication and the shifts that are taking place in campaigning for human rights. Yana discusses the latest thinking and how neuroscience insights are changing the way activists operate and why they are releasing their artworks as open source. I ask Yana to reflect on the state of political leadership and the evolution of leadership around the world. We also discuss education, curiosity, creativity and procrastination before we jump into our quick-fire questions. There's a lot of inspiration in this episode but I was struck by how lack of experience never stopped Yana, how persistence and acceptance of failure spurred her one to achieve extraordinary impact. I hope you enjoy the heart, humanity and humility of Yana Tavanier.Social LinksInstagram Twitter FacebookBeat – her creative social experiment, exploring the ominous silence surrounding domestic violence.Fakery – Yana's project fighting fake news through beautiful but horribly tasting cupcakes. On paper, Holly Ransom has a life we all look at with awe. In her early 20s, she was invited by the Australian PM to Chair the G20 Youth Summit and then life began to accelerate. She has delivered a Peace Charter to the Dalai Lama, interviewed Barack Obama on stage, was Sir Richard Branson’s nominee for Wired Magazine’s ‘Smart List’ of Future Game Changers to watch in 2017 and was awarded the US Embassy’s Eleanor Roosevelt Award for Leadership Excellence in 2019. This isn't even all of it. More recently, she won a Harvard Fulbright Scholarship and is taking two years to go deep into International Governance and policy. There's no doubt she's going to change the world. And she's only 29. Here's the thing though, we never get to hear Holly's story, because she's usually on the other side of the microphone. And wow, is it a good one. For ALL of us. Join Danielle, Co Founder of Remarkable Women as she asks Holly to share some of the workings of her own mind, including the story of why she never believed she would win the Harvard Scholarship and what she did to make it happen. This is the story of what it's like to go ALL IN and perhaps a lesson in why we often choose not to. Join the clan! www.remarkablewomen.co.uk
Most people running Google Ads campaigns don't realize this, but there are some simple ways to optimize your campaigns to target people that are more likely to engage with your product or service, not simply click your ad. One I've written about, spoken about and implemented religiously, is setting up Google Analytics Goals, and linking Google Analytics with Adwords to import the GA Goals as Conversions in Adwords, then selecting the "optimize for conversions" instead of "clicks" in Google Ads. But that was a few years back, and Google is actually making it easier for smart and savvy marketers to set up a similar type of situation. Google is calling these "Smart Lists." Smart Lists uses Machine Learning. A Smart List is an audience that Google Analytics creates for you automatically. Using advanced machine learning, Analytics predicts which of your website visitors are most likely to convert in the future and adds them to an audience that you can then re-engage with Google Ads. Analytics generates your Smart List using insights about your visitors and their activity on your site. Your list updates on a daily basis, so that visitors are automatically added and removed based on the latest available signals. This enables you to show ads to your highest potential customers, which can result in more conversions without an increase in budget. This video shows you how to get started setting up Google Analytics Smart Lists to drive more conversions via your Google Ads Campaigns. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/paulhickey/support

Why Metadharma? is an unusual episode of the Deconstructing Yourself podcast, in that it’s Part 2 of a joint interview between Vince and Michael Taft. Part 1 appeared on the Buddhist Geeks podcast recently, and they continue the conversation here. The topic of these discussions is a subject that both speakers are actively developing, called “metadharma.” In brief, metadharma refers to the many different ways that the dharma is being adapted, remixed, and redefined to meet the unique challenges and opportunities of the current moment.Vincent Horn is part of a new generation of teachers & translators exploring dharma in the age of the network. Vincent began teaching in 2010 having been authorized in both the Pragmatic Dharma lineage of Kenneth Folk, and by Trudy Goodman, guiding teacher of InsightLA, in the Insight Meditation tradition. Vincent has been called a “power player of the mindfulness movement” by Wired magazine and was featured in Wired UK’s “Smart List: 50 people who will change the world.” He currently lives in the Blue Ridge Mountains outside of Asheville, North Carolina with his partner Emily Horn and their son Zander.More about the Buddhist Geeks farm here.Listen to David Chapman talk about metasystematicity here.

Who in the world would eat bugs? On Purpose? If you ask our SMACtalk Host Daniel Newman, the answer would be no one, but if you talk to “Foresight Extraordinaire,” MIT Ph.D. Mitch Joachim, he says there is a problem that we are trying to solve and from a sustainability standpoint eating bugs may have its place. Before you jump or grab your silverware, the context is far more enticing than just bug eating, but the real direction of the conversation is how can thinking outside of what is normal provoke us to solve new problems. In this fascinating episode of SMACtalk, Newman gets Joachim to share the whole “Bug” story and much more about how to keep your business from being disrupted. Don’t miss it, download now! “True self discovery begins where your comfort zone ends.”Adam BraunIt’s no secret that aspects of our current education system are at best antiquated, at worst broken. Whether it's quality education in the developing world, properly training people to meet our rapidly changing workforce needs or the crippling student loan debt that onerously burdens millions of young people, we're long overdue for some systemic upgrades. This week's guest has devoted his life to tackling these problems.A young man with a bright future, Adam Braun graduated from Brown and threw himself headfirst into a burgeoning career in finance when an extended backpacking trip across the developing world forever changed his perspective. Inspired by a sense of purpose and a call to service, in 2008 Adam walked away from Wall Street to launch Pencils of Promise – a for purpose philanthropic endeavor with the mission of building schools in countries across the world. A massive success, Pencils of Promise is responsible for over 400 new schools to date, distinguishing itself as one of a handful of charitable organizations that has fundamentally changed how we think about and practice philanthropy and giving.Named to Forbes' 30 Under 30 List, Business Insider's 40 Under 40 List, and Wired's Smart List of 50 People Changing the World, Adam chronicles his remarkable journey in The Promise of a Pencil*, a powerful story of awakening and action that demonstrates how one person can make a huge difference in a short period of time. Debuting at #2 on the New York Times Bestseller list and going on to becoming a #1 national bestseller, it's a favored read among business leaders and can even be found on many a college syllabus.Today finds Adam embarking a new chapter, taking on higher education with an ambitious new start up called MissionU – a for-profit for purpose, venture-backed organization that presents a compelling alternative to traditional college by sending students into the workforce debt-free.This is a great conversation about Adam’s journey to entrepreneurial success. It's about the current state of education, the business of education, and the innovative path forward. It’s a conversation about self-awareness, integrity and lightning moments. But mostly, this is a conversation about the transformative power of leading a meaningful life of service fueled by purpose.I applaud Adam's commitment to dream big and solve huge problems. A special human, I promise you will be captivated by the extraordinary story behind it all.I sincerely hope you enjoy the exchange.Peace + Plants,Listen & Subscribe on iTunes | Soundcloud | StitcherJoin us for our next retreat in Italy, May 20-27 — for info visit: See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Do we need to reform our government? That’s an understatement. World renowned geopolitical strategist and 5 times best selling author, Dr. Parag Khanna, shares insights from his latest book, Technocracy in America, for a radical overhaul of the US government system. Dr. Khanna draws upon his personal experiences as a global citizen having traveled and studied dozens of political systems from around the globe. On this episode, Parag and I discuss how our current system has failed us, why technocrats are better served to effect change in an administration, why the office of the Presidency needs checks and balances with an executive oversight committee, his ideas on why the Senate and House needs to be re-configured as an Assembly of Governors, and much much more. In light of the recent transition of power in the White House, the timing of this conversation could not be more relevant. Regardless of what side of the isle you sit on, we can all agree that its about time we re-think how our government operates to serve the peoples’ needs. All this and more on today’s episode. Now, That’s Unusual. About Dr. Parag Khanna Dr. Parag Khanna is a leading global strategist, world traveler and best-selling author. His latest book is Technocracy in America: Rise of the Info-State. A widely cited global intellectual, Dr. Khanna provides regular commentary for international media. His articles have appeared in the New York Times Magazine, the Wall Street Journal, TIME, Forbes and The Atlantic, among many others, and he has made frequent appearances on CNN, BBC, CNBC, Al Jazeera and the TED stage. Dr. Khanna lectures frequently at international conferences and gives executive briefings to government leaders and major corporations on global trends and scenarios, systemic risks and technological disruptions, and market entry strategies and economic master planning. He has worked as an advisor to the US National Intelligence Council’s Global Trends 2030 program and as a senior research fellow at the New America Foundation. His resume also includes a stint in Iraq and Afghanistan, serving as senior geopolitical advisor to United States Special Operations Forces. Born in India, Dr. Khanna grew up in the United Arab Emirates, New York and Germany. He is an accomplished adventurer who has traveled to every continent, visiting more than 100 countries. Dr. Khanna holds a PhD in international relations from the London School of Economics, and Bachelors and Masters degrees from the School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University. Among his many honors, Dr. Khanna was awarded the 2017 Richard von Weizsaecker Fellowship of the Bosch Foundation, named one of Esquire’s 75 Most Influential People of the 21st Century and featured in WIRED magazine’s Smart List. He currently serves as Senior Research Fellow in the Centre on Asia and Globalisation at the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy at the National University of Singapore. Key Interview Takeaways A direct technocracy could best cope with the complexity of a connected world. Khanna argues that our current system is overly populist, short-term and narrow-minded. An ideal form of government would combine Switzerland’s direct democracy in which citizens have a say in every issue with Singapore’s technocratic structure of well-trained consultants using voter sentiment and big data to implement long-term planning. Technocrat and elite are not synonyms. While elites are smart people with a fancy degree, technocrats are smart people who also know how to govern. It’s not enough to be intelligent, a technocrat must also understand how to get things done. A truly effective executive branch would embrace the concept of a collective presidency. Rather than a single person making policy decisions, a committee of seven would debate domestic, international, economic and military issues. Together, the group would vet ideas and work toward consensus as they inform the president’s decision-making.

Welcome to Episode 32 of HubShots Recorded: Monday 02 May 2016 For full show notes please visit: http://hubshots.com/episode-32/ Shot 1: Inbound Thought of the Week Keynote speaker: Kim Scott Radical Candour : http://www.radicalcandor.com/ http://www.kimmalonescott.com/#!blog/cmq7 example: http://www.kimmalonescott.com/#!How-to-be-radically-candid-about-BO/c1z2c/56bf29a60cf2132b0297bd32 http://firstround.com/review/radical-candor-the-surprising-secret-to-being-a-good-boss/ Radical candor, then, results from a combination of caring personally and challenging directly. But what does it look like in practice? Scott has created an acronym to help people remember: HHIPP: “Radical candor is humble, it’s helpful, it’s immediate, it’s in person — in private if it’s criticism and in public if it’s praise — and it doesn’t personalize.” That last P makes a key distinction: “My boss didn’t say, ‘You’re stupid.’ She said, ‘You sounded stupid when you said um.’ There’s a big difference between the two.” Inbound Prediction: HubSpot will launch an MVP program Similar to how Microsoft has a fantastic MVP program. Shot 2: HubSpot feature/tip of the Week Smart List Performance tab: HubSpot List Performance tab Action item: use these graphs to highlight areas to improve or remove. For example, I’ve cut back on showing CTAs to anyone outside Australia. Shot 3: Challenge of the Week Communicating with customers when things go wrong. Chatting with @mobysiddique about this – he alerted me to the issue initially, because he is having the issue with his InboundBuzz podcast feed Example of what not to do: Soundcloud – http://status.soundcloud.com/post/143647524960/rss-feed-maintenance Example of what to do: HubSpot (discussed in ep 9 – http://hubshots.com/episode-9/ – http://web.archive.org/web/20160304065446/http://trust.hubspot.com/?p=1688), WPEngine Shot 4: Opinion of the Week The 200 billion dollar chatbot disruption: http://venturebeat.com/2016/05/01/the-200-billion-dollar-chatbot-disruption/ To highlight the key differences, let’s itemize the various gaps in the two approaches: Chatbots offer a standardized way of connecting with businesses (similar to Twitter handles or email addresses), reducing the complexity of finding the contact info for a company. By integrating with Facebook identity, chatbots allow for automatic verification of personal information (no more cumbersome account lookups or credit card entries). Takeaway: How do you get prepared as a business for this? Is the first thing to have a knowledge base where customers go to help themselves? VR – Google Cardboard Shot 5: General Tip of the Week Advanced User Permissions for HubSpot CRM For HubSpot CRM users, navigate to Settings > Users. Add a new user or edit an existing one, and you’ll see a new set of options under the “Sales” user roles: For each user, admins will be able to choose the following permissions: CRM Features (Companies, Deals, Tasks): Enabled/Disabled View: Everything, owned + unassigned, owned only Edit: Everything, owned + unassigned, owned only Bulk Delete: Enabled/Disabled Import: Enabled/Disabled Export: Enabled/Disabled Edit Settings: Enabled/Disabled HubSpot CRM User Roles These permissions can be mixed and matched on a per-user basis to make the configuration that works best for a specific team. Users can also separate view and edit permissions. For example, a manager might let his or her reps see everything, but only edit the records they own. Shot 6: Win of the Week Google Partners Connect Event Make sure you follow us on Twitter @HubShots to get any real time specials or resources e.g. the AppSumo deal sold out.
