Ep. 165 (Part 2 of 2) | Tami Simon, founder of the highly regarded multimedia publishing company Sounds True, covers a lot of inspiring ground in this heartening, lively, candid conversation. She tells the extraordinary story of how she came to devote herself to disseminating spiritual wisdom; about finding the edges and growing into them on her own path of awakening; the spiritual teachers she has encountered whose teachings have affected her the most; the wholeness of spiritual vision and psychological health; and discovering that, like all of us, spiritual leaders can be both luminous and in need of healing at the same time. Tami is an ardent torchbearer for the conscious business movement, explaining that business can be the way we give our gifts—that the endeavors of an inspired entrepreneur can be expressions of love and provide an incredible way of connecting with other people. What is so striking throughout is the depth of Tami's clarity about what matters in life and her unwavering commitment to acting with integrity. Tami has a remarkable ability to translate her spiritual insights and principles into action—as co-host Roger Walsh points out, she is a beautiful example of a karma yogic life, where being of service is the fuel, the inspiration, and the content of her life, as she continuously works towards furthering both her own spiritual awakening and the awakening of all. Tami offers a lovely, poetic rendering of the effects of living a true and meaningful life: “The litmus test is always somebody's wake, the ripples of their life, how they've impacted others . . . the beauty, love, and justice that live in the wake of a person.” A genuinely engaging, illuminating, memorable conversation. Recorded October 17, 2024.“What I feel I owe people is the truth.”(For Apple Podcast users, click here to view the complete show notes on the episode page.)Topics & Time Stamps – Part 2What are some of the people and ideas that really stand out to Tami? On this week's episode of the Friends in Beauty podcast I welcome Jeffery Glenn to the Friends in Beauty guest chair. Jeffery Glenn is a renaissance man, a natural born creative and artist whose work expands across multiple facets of the entertainment and beauty industries. He is a man that is diligent, executes with passion, and performs with integrity at focus. Being from Miami, Fl., he also brings a unique flavor into the room. In 2008, he was accepted into the Department of Theatre Arts with a concentration in musical theatre at the illustrious Howard University. While receiving his training, he met Reggie Ray who served as his professor and mentor. He'd trained in stage makeup with Reggie Ray. The training entailed that of character makeup, enhancement, and what defines beauty. It was then when he realized a love for creating and storytelling through the art of make-up. Once he received a Bachelors of Fine Arts, he jumped into the field working on campaigns with model agencies in the D.C. area. Finding his power in editorial beauty, Jeffery began to leave his mark making an impact with photographers, stylists, models, etc. He soon after started landing spreads in magazines (Elléments, Elegant, PUMP, Selin, Solstice Magazine, Essence) both nationally and internationally. This led him to gain clientele from D.C., New York, and his hometown Miami, Fl. After working on the east coast for 3 years, Jeffery relocated to the Los Angeles area venturing into tv and film. His credits include Rihanna's ANTI World Tour, Regina Hall (Scary Movie, Girls Trip), Rah Digga of Flipmode Squad, Tiffany Haddish, KJ Smith (Tyler Perry's “Sistas”), Charlemagne Tha God, Desus Nice, Kash Doll, Aisha Hinds (9-1-1, True Blood), Chris Spencer, Tammy Townsend (CSI: Crime Scene Investigation), Camille Winbush (The Bernie Mac Show), Elle Varner, Paloma Ford, Miss Nikki Baby (Love & HipHop Hollywood), Olympic gold medalist English Gardner, Wanda Durant, Birgundi Baker (The Chi), Lauren E. This week I want to share a story about my mom… and the joy of lifting a burden that was not mine. Recently, I attended a daylong council held by one of my teachers on the Big Island. It also happened to be my mom's birthday (she died in 2017), so while I was there with an intention of gaining clarity of what the last 50 years of my life have been about (and what the next chapter would be), it was also a day of remembering her. My teacher had us all pick a card from a deck of dharma tarot cards she had created, and I chose my card, admired the artwork, read the quote, and began to cry. The weight of the recent past, as well as the heaviness of my immigrant mother's wishes and dreams of me, became apparent. It was a quote from Reggie Ray, a Tibetan Buddhist Vajrayana practitioner: Dharma is not about credentials. It's not about how many practices you've done, or how peaceful you can make your mind. It's not about being in a community where you feel safe or enjoying the cachet of being a “Buddhist.” It's not even about accumulating teachings, empowerments, or “spiritual accomplishments.” It's about how naked you're willing to be with your own life, and how much you're willing to let go of your masks and your armor and live as a completely exposed, undefended, and open human person. This teaching came after my recent conversation with teachers I've had about the burden I was feeling to do all these “teacher trainings” so I could receive “approval” to share the dharma in a deeper way. The prospect of taking 3 months out of my life to do a 3-month retreat and pay for it and additional trainings seemed… daunting. I felt angry that it seemed set up for the privileged…and it is. Finally, one of my BIPOC teachers said, “Ana, why do you feel the need to do that? You can keep doing what you're already doing. Living the dharma and sharing it with others.” She told me I'd done enough, I was doing enough still. And I didn't need that “colonizer thinking” that I had to get even more approval and pay more money to be enough (I'm already certified in teaching meditation and mindfulness etc).. Then I pull this card. And the quote touched beyond my insecurity around sharing the dharma. It reminded me of all my credentials that took time, money, and energy, as well as leaving my family for big chunks of time: 4 graduate degrees, 6 coaching certifications, 5 specialist certifications…it goes on. And while some of this was from a love of learning, it was also me not feeling like I was…enough. I was afraid that if I didn't have that degree or certification, that people would prefer someone else. But the reality is I didn't need ALL the things I've paid to do to be as good at what I do. The degrees from fancy schools may be why some people first check me out, but they decide to work with me because of how I show up with them (at least this is what they tell me;). Yet, I usually don't remember that I'm not my degrees. This makes sense. The capitalist society most of us live in based on instilling a fear that we're not enough as we are. That it's who we're associated with that will keep us safe and employed and secure. That we can earn more and pay more and everything will be okay. What I didn't know was that I had spent many years thinking I was just playing the game, but not getting sucked in. I mean, I grew up poor. I knew better than to buy into that BS, right? I had been happy to live out of my car and just make 14k a year. After reading that dharma tarot quote, I realized I had succumbed to the fears I had growing up. I had lots of fear about being poor again. Because it did suck to wait in line for government food. It was embarrassing to pay with stamps and shitty when we had to euthanize my pets because we couldn't afford their treatments. Or to not be able to afford rent in a safe neighborhood or even own a house so that we weren't always at risk of being asked to move out. I made it a goal to make big money not for my happiness… but for safety. So I express my fear to the group out loud, and - most of them white - they tell me there's so much evidence that money doesn't make you happy, and why would I believe that. Not helpful. Rashani sees that I am in a mind loop and comes at me with a rattle, and the sound and vibration dissolves the walls around me. I surrender and collapse, inside and outside. She asks me what's present, and I say that I feel a bunch of white people are telling me that how I feel isn't valid.” Then I sob, and say, “I don't feel safe in this society.” “I don't either,” she tells me. I curl up in a snotty, sobbing, ball on the floor. And slowly, just from grieving this, I start to feel lighter. Rashani takes my hands as I slowly sit up. And I realize that I did exactly what my mom didn't want me to do. To work as much as she did. To not have financial freedom by going into so much educational debt. I forgot that all my parents ever wanted for me was to be happy. I cry out, “I'm so sorry!” to my mother.” I feel her presence. “I misunderstood. I see now what you wanted for me. I'm so sorry…” And I feel my mother's forgiveness for all the ways my busy-ness and stress came out in harmful ways towards her. It was cathartic. My teacher says, “You've been sucked into that capitalist story. But this is the last day.” “You're decolonizing your mind.” YES. She asked me if I still felt fear, and I searched my mind and body and heart and was surprised to find that I didn't. I didn't have the ongoing story that I was unsafe. That the world was unsafe. I could see the multiple paths of confusion I've been having - about where to live, how to raise Maia, how to free myself from debt - become clear. I know from my own experience that you are safe too. Even if you don't believe me and you feel unsafe right now, know that I've been there. The realities of living in a capitalist consumerist modern industrialized world exist. And we can choose how deeply we participate in it. We can choose how deeply that impacts how we show up in the world, how authentically we live our lives, how we choose to use our valuable time. I will flash my degrees when I need to to open some doors - but I will see them for what they are - and what they are not. They are NOT who I am, and they are not what validate my worthiness. And I have my eye on the prize: true freedom. And that starts from within. What is one small choice we can make today to help feel more safe in a society that instills fear in so many ways? This is a call to decolonize your mind from the bullshit story that we aren't enough as we are. That we aren't worthy of safety, love, and protection just for being alive. Because we are. We all are. According to the NY Post: The man spotted wielding a folding chair as a weapon during the wild WWE-style attack on the black co-captain of a riverboat trying to dock in Alabama turned himself in to police Friday. Reggie Ray, 42, was charged with disorderly conduct and locked up in municipal jail, according to Montgomery police. He became the fifth person charged in the violent melee, though police previously stated more arrests could be handed down in the next few days. Mary Todd, 21; Richard Roberts, 48, Allen Todd, 23, and Zachary Shipman, 25, were arrested earlier this week and all charged with assault. Authorities had been on the hunt for Ray since identifying him as the man who used the chair to whack at least two white boaters after they launched an unprovoked attack on black riverboat co-captain Damien Pickett on the Montgomery Riverfront. The group was retaliating after catching Pickett trying to move their pontoon boat, which they had illegally parked in a designated docking spot for the city-owned Harriott II riverboat, which was trying to offload its 200 passengers, police said. Neil McKinlay's sources of support and inspiration in this work have been many. The writings of Shunryu Suzuki and Chogyam Trungpa. The City Retreat teachings of Pema Chodron. A long apprenticeship with Reggie Ray. The manipulative dynamics of this last relationship have also been impactful, impressing on me the need for humility, integrity, and respect in sharing these practices, and motivating this video update. As a teacher, Neil has had the privilege of leading both short- and long-term events online and in-person. He has been able to explore the teachings and practices of embodied meditation with small groups near his home in the Pacific Northwest and larger groups around the globe. In doing so, he is certain he's learned much more than he's taught. He has also been a parent and partner, author and competitive swim coach. Each of these roles has, in their own way, shown him that meditation specifically and spirituality more generally, is not something to be left on the cushion or stored in the shrine room. This work lives and breathes and thrives when it is brought into the world, allowed to touch and be touched by the stuff of everyday life.Website: https://neilmckinlay.com/
In this week's episode of The Relationship School Podcast, we speak with my former spiritual teacher Dr. Reginald "Reggie" Ray. I was also his TA in an undergraduate course on Tibetan Buddhism. This guy completely changed my life. Reggie is the @DharmaOceanFoundation's co-founder and spiritual director, a university professor (retired) at Naropa University, and a highly respected meditation/dharma teacher. Our conversation covers a lot of ground, including how being spiritually minded is not necessarily synonymous with being relationally developed or particularly skillful, and the importance of treating every human with respect, despite any issue or conflict. Listen to the full episode to hear more about Reggie and his powerful journey. In this episode of Waking Up Bipolar, Chris Cole shares a small talk on gratitude. He speaks from the heart to pray and inspire the sacred ritual of giving thanks.Giving thanks. Expressing Gratitude. These are the most ancient, pure forms of spirituality. When I was a kid, whenever we would play a pickup game, my best friend Brandon would call me the “black hole,” because I would forget to pass the rock in favor of brick after brick. So let me offer my most sincere appreciation for my Teachers, who are many, and yet there are all-stars. Let’s do it chronologically…First and foremost, I want to thank my parents, who taught me that Love was something unconditional and immeasurable. Infinite in fact. They taught me the math equation: Love equals Infinity. They taught me spiritual laws, which transcended particularities of denomination. One time I asked my father, do you love God or your Family more? He said something like, “Family is a Gift from God.”Second, I want to thank my friends. I grew up in public schools, where lunch tables were all the rage. Who you sat with, and why you sat with them, was a whole universe of complexity. My Black peers let me sit at their table, when I felt like such an outcast. They taught me about how to do the tootsie roll and what the best R&B stations were. I was introduced to Boys II Men, and I began learning what it meant to grow up. When I transitioned to private school, I experienced a lot of bullying. It made me sad, but it made me strong. I have complicated feelings about this time. I learned theology and philosophy. I learned languages. I’ll always appreciate learning. And I vow to always be learning.Third, I want to thank my confirmation process. I became Catholic and took on the Patron Saint Christopher, which happens to also be my namesake. Bearer of Christ. There’s the story of Christopher, who carried the young Jesus across the river. He was a giant. He felt that he was carrying the weight of the world on his shoulders. He became the saint of travel and safe passage. When I feel lost, I still call on Christopher. I will always call on him.Fourth, I want to thank mental health recovery communities. I was a profound addict. Sometimes, I still am quite addicted to my own juice. Addiction is a mighty thing that conquers many people. I had to learn what it meant to let go of resentment as a practice in addition to a prayer. I had to learn forgiveness as a discipline more than an aspiration. I was humbled to continuously return to the earth. I remain humbled by the earth.Fifth, I need to thank Dharma Teachers. Dharma essentially means “Truth.” What I learned in Dharma circles is that God and Dharma are not in conflict. I learned that very little is truly in conflict. I learned to deepen my appreciation for non-violence. I learned to deepen my appreciation for individual and collective liberation. Many of my misunderstandings of Christ were resolved in the scientific inquiry of mind. I could see how Judaism and Christianity were not in conflict. I could see how every faith tradition had Love woven throughout. Specifically, though there are many teachers with whom I’ve crossed paths, I want to thank the following Buddhist teachers by name: Kyodoshi, Lama Rod Owens, Acharya Dale Asrael, Reggie Ray and Caroline Pfohl, Frank Berliner, and Bill Scheffel. I have loved every lineage I have come into contact with, but these teacher specifically have saved my life and led me out of confusion.Sixth, and this is where time bends a little. I need to thank my children, who are my greatest teachers. My first son was born on Leap Day 2012. I was caught up in the Mayan Calendar, and I honestly thought that while the world wasn’t ending, my world was. Becoming a father utterly and completely changed my life. I began to envision a world where they could thrive, not in competition, but in unity. I began to recall my own childhood and how things could be different for them. I imagined one big lunch room, where everyone had a seat at the table. I imagined clean water. I imagined gentle breezes. I imagined a joyous earth. I imagined campfires. I imagined intergalactic alliances. I continue to imagine.Seventh, I need to thank the profession of chiropractic. I nearly became a chiropractor. I was chopping up cadavers and labeling nerves. I was learning biochemistry and how to operate a microscope. Life University taught me about Innate Intelligence — that the power that made the body heals the body. That interference—be it emotional, physical, or chemical—is the root of all pathology. I could see how my own physical trauma, emotional pain, and chemical injections led me down a path of illness. I continue to live with this illness today.Eighth, I have to take the time to appreciate my previous marriage and the struggle through divorce. Due to my upbringing, I had a really hard time accepting divorce. I took my vows so seriously, that I would have died over them. That’s how seriously I take vows. To the death. But it wasn’t working, and so we had to find a way to take new vows. I had to create my own vows to save my life. That’s how vows work sometimes. New vows for new life.Ninth, I have to thank Democracy. I was born into an ever-growing approach toward a more-perfect union. But my appreciation for this movement has been wavy over time. I would think, maybe there’s a better way. Then I would think, there’s definitely not a better way. Then I would come to acceptance of things that I could and could not change: That Democracy is a principle, and She is only as effective as her Practice.Tenth and lastly for now, I have to thank my consort Grace, my Melody of Golden Light. She pushes me to be a stronger man. She pushes me to be a more complete human. She makes me bend when I want to straighten. She makes me yield when I want to go. She presses start when I’m holding pause. She is the wind beneath my wings. She holds anti-oppression like a soft blanket, and she forces my hardened mind to flow like a mighty river stream. When I am with her, I know God. When we are together, nothing is impossible.Well my Loves, that’s the end of my little tribute. Honorable mentions go out to my undying Love for all Artists throughout Space and Time. Art is the language of the soul. The muses speak to me, and I obey. I pray for artists to be free. I pray for them to be wild. I pray for them to be steady. I pray for them to teach our children and to know unqualified liberation. All of my teachers are my family. That’s how Love works.JOIN THE DISCUSSION at https://www.facebook.com/groups/wakingupbipolarChris Cole hosts the Waking Up Bipolar podcast, focused on the intersection of bipolar disorder and spiritual awakening. Description In this interview, Sarah Richardson sits down with Dr. Ellen Katz, who has a unique lens as both a practising Social worker and a practising Buddhist, and a professor who marries these two experiences in and for her students. She discusses how she teaches her students about experiential and embodied learning, and meditation practices, in an undergraduate course on mindfulness and mental health interventions, and in graduate courses on mindfulness for social work students who may apply this one day in the field. For Ellen though, it is important that mindfulness is not a tool, but instead a practice that all must experience to understand. Quotes "I tell them that mindfulness is something like present moment awareness that welcomes all experience without preconception or judgment. It accepts what is with curiosity and compassion." Ellen Katz "Mindfulness isn't a technique—it's a process and you are the tool." Ellen Katz "Social work is still focused on identity: duality and division. Buddhism can take social work further, looking at what we share as human beings." Ellen Katz "I find they are so engaged and again so hungry for this knowledge, theory, and practice." kn literary arts is the creation of 15-year publishing veteran Kelly Notaras. After starting her career in New York City—working as an editor for HarperCollins, Penguin USA and Hyperion Books—she relocated several years ago to Boulder, Colorado where she served for four years as the VP and Editorial Director at Sounds True, a multi-media spirituality publishing company. There she oversaw an impressive list of spiritual luminaries including Adyashanti, Reggie Ray, Krishna Das, Sharon Salzberg, Pema Chodron, Caroline Myss, and many more. In 2010 she left Sounds True to ghostwrite her first book, but her love of editing was never far away. Since starting kn literary arts, she has been honored to edit a wide variety of personal growth books including the forthcoming Intimate Conversations with the Divine by Caroline Myss and New York Times Bestsellers The Tapping Solution by Nick Ortner and Pussy: A Reclamation by Regena “Mama Gena” Thomashauer. kn literary's amazing client list also includes Nancy Levin, Michael Morelli, Agapi Stassinopoulos, Miranda Macpherson, Bruce Tift, Drew Canole, Danette May and many more. Kelly is the author of The Book You Were Born to Write: Everything You Need to (Finally) Get Your Wisdom Onto the Page and Into the World, published by Hay House. She lives in Colorado. Visit her at www.knliterary.com. Kelly shared so much wisdom about how and why you must write the book that is in your heart. If you're struggling with the question "Who am I to write a book?" (like many of us authors), look at it from a different angle. Focus on being of service and the 'how to' that will help others. Life wants you to share your experience, not hold on to it! 2.The reader is everything! You'll want to pick a specific person whom you're writing to that could use your wisdom. You don't have to go much farther along the path...all you need are a few steps ahead to be able to shine the light and help your reader. Get out of your ego, and into your intuition. If you're an author and not a writer, Kelly's company is filled with amazing writers who can help you. A great way to write your book is take a course you're already teaching and break it up into chapters and sections. Mama Gena did this with her bestselling book, Pussy: A Reclamation. Bhakti Yoga Bhakti Yoga is said to be the fast track to enlightenment. In this video I will explain what bhakti yoga is and how my practice of it has evolved over time. Bhakti yoga is a yoga of the Hindu tradition that offers a total surrender and faith to God and develops our capacity to love. It is said when realization is reached on this path of devotion that you will love all and hate none. It is not about generating love for personal gain. Bhakti is said to be the easiest way to reach the Divine. I would agree with that statement and I will explain why that has been true in my own experience in a little bit. As with any teaching, there is no right or wrong or better, best. There is only the way that resonates with you the most and allows you to awaken to express your own Highest Self for the benefit of all beings in the world. That will be unique for each one of us. Hi I´m Melissa from Yoga with Melissa, I teach yin yoga, restorative yoga, hatha yoga and yoga nidra. I am a student of Tibetan Buddhism in the lineage of Dharma Ocean. If you are new here, welcome. I put out a video every Monday and Wednesday morning at 9:30 am PT and Friday at 9:30 am PT on my main channel I release a one hour yoga video. What Bhakti Yoga has meant to me has changed over time. I have been teaching on YouTube since 2009, so we have a rather public record to look back on and explore how my attitude of devotion, surrender and cultivation of love has evolved. If you go back to the Vishnu series in 2011, Ganesh Series in 2012, Shiva series in 2012 Lakshmi series in 2013, Durga series in 2013, I saw bhakti yoga as surrendering my devotion to an object outside of myself. At this stage of my spiritual development it was useful to have an archetypal representation of the divine. I think perhaps because it wasn't possible for me to see these attributes within myself at this time. Vishnu video Ganesh video Lakshi video Durga video Shiva video What stands out to me is that these classes do not extend past 2013, definitely not past 2014. This was a time of great transition for me. I was dealing with a lot of personal ongoing illness with chronic migraines. Our family also made the decision to make a huge move across the country. The move allowed me to access new ways of practicing yoga, specifically yin yoga and meditation that focused much more on Taoism, Buddhism and the philosophies of chinese medicine. You will see that change slowly came into my teachings more and more. When I moved to Victoria BC I was introduced to new teachers and teachings. Yin yoga was completely different from other kinds of yoga and my yin yoga teacher here, Carly Forest, taught me the importance of relaxing, yielding, letting go and resting as ways of nourishing and nurturing myself through a yin practice. In 2016 when I was introduced to the teachings of Reggie Ray and my meditation teacher here in Victoria BC, Neil McKinlay, I was introduced to a whole new way of meditating called somatic meditation. Suddenly meditation was no longer a disciplined and punishing practice. There was a lot of softness and compassion that came into the practice over the next few years. Through yin yoga and somatic meditation, what bhakti yoga means to me has evolved. While what bhakti yoga means to me in still lines up with the definition in the traditional definition, it has definitely changed. It still means surrendering to the Divine and it probably means that in a deeper way than before. However, I do not see the Divine as a theistic deity external to my being. For me, now, after taking refuge vows and bodhisattva vows, it has evolved into being about surrendering my aggression, my agenda, my life planning, and letting go of my small ego-self. It is about opening to the awareness, clarity, wisdom, love, and vastness of my higher Self as well as following its guidance in right action and right relationship in my life.

This is a 35 minute guided meditation by Alistair Appleton exploring the Earth Descent practice taught by Reggie Ray.
This week yoga teacher Samuel Fong Brooks talks us through how he went from personal trainer to co-owner of Leeds Yoga Studio. Sam's open and honest account describes his personal journey and how yoga supported him. Sam references some people and sources who have helped him; Reggie Ray https://www.dharmaocean.org/ Ram Dass https://www.ramdass.org/ Vajrayana Buddhism Krishna Das http://krishnadas.com/ Yogaglo https://www.yogaglo.com/ Leeds Yoga hosted the recent STV get together, check out the FB page to see the video http://www.facebook.com/sharingthevibepodcast Sam's website is: http://leedsyoga.com Instagram: samuelfongyoga STV view: Paul has been to yoga on and off for three years. He has to spend a lot of time driving and over the years this took its toll on his lower back. "I'd get out of the car after a two hour drive it was taking me 10 minutes to stand up straight. The first time I went to yoga it felt like my back was just really pleased to be stretched in all the right places. I've predominantly done Ashtanga yoga and am usually one of only two guys in the class out of twenty. I think it's kind of funny really that guys are usually less flexible than girls, yet it is the girls who have figured out that yoga is the way to develop better core strength and be more supple. I do one class every week now, but would like to do two. The relaxation section of the class is also really cool. Different teachers have different approaches. Some do full guided meditations, others just leave you there quietly at the end of a class to relax and de-stress. "I think most guys think that yoga isn't a workout, but they are wrong. After a 75 minute class I'm usually drenched in sweat. The poses often have different options so often when you master one, there is a modification that intensifies it. It is also a great way to become a bit more mindful about your body, and tune in a bit more to what is going on. In fact yoga, mindfulness and meditation all feel linked to me." Sam Fong Brooks
Vast physical pleasure, deep love, and even union with divine source can be experienced through sex. Sexual energy is the source of all life in this world. Christopher Sunyata teaches people how to embrace their sexual power and artfully conduct it through their body and intimate relationships, integrating this power into their whole life. Drawing upon decades of practice and study under masters of sexual yoga, Taoist exercises, and Buddhist meditation, he teaches ancient body-centered practices without dogma or esoteric language that lead people to discover the secret wisdom already present within their own body. By learning to trust this wisdom within their body, people can reclaim passion and life energy that is their birthright, and create intimate relationships that deepen in love and chemistry over the years. Prior to teaching he was a successful international project manager responsible for over a billion dollars in revenue, a medical device engineer with seven patents, and a ceramic artist. He has raised four children, two of his own, including one who has significant disabilities. He lives in Boulder, Colorado with his beloved wife Karlene. Favorite Success Quote “He knows himself, and all that's in him, who knows adversity. To scale great heights, we must come out of lowermost depths. The way to heaven is through hell. We need fiery baptisms in the fiercest flames of our own bosoms. We must feel our hearts hot – hissing in us. And ere their fire is revealed, it must burn its way out of us, though it consume us and itself.”~Herman Melville Key Points 1. You Need to Take Time to Acknowledge Your Present Mind and Body Every man needs to take time out of his day to simply acknowledge how he feels in the present moment, but more than merely acknowledging, he needs to ask what his body is telling him. Your mind and body are telling you a story, and when you are fully present and connected to your body you may realize that there are things that are happening in your life; stressors, lack of exercise, tension, etc. that need to be dealt with for you to live life fully. 2.You Will Die Someday One of the most uncomfortable truths of life is our own mortality. No matter who you are, what you do, how much money you make, how many women you sleep with, or how big of an impact you make, you will still die. This is an inescapable truth, and although it is unpleasant can also be incredibly freeing. People tend to ruminate on shit that really doesn't matter, they worry about the car they drive, what clothes they are going to wear, and a number of other things that will make no difference in the long run. If you want to be living a life of joy and freedom, learn to accept your death and live in accordance with the reality of your own fate. Love openly and fully, connect with people, get away from your damn phone and just be present. take care of your body, never hold back anything, go on adventures. We are all dead men walking, better make the most of it. 3. Learn to Accept and Enjoy Your Various Emotional States Our life is like a river, flowing between the banks of pleasure and pain. The only time we get into trouble is when we try to get out of the river and onto the bank, either of pleasure or pain, and we try to stay there. But as long as we realize that our life is a river and pleasure and pain are the boundaries, we're going to do fine. We're right in the middle between the two of them. We can't really catch hold on either side. A lot of things go by.” ~Reggie Ray 4. Perfection is About Constant Improvement So many people are overly critical of themselves because they are not perfect. They fuss over every little mishap and screwed up event in their life without realizing that perfection is an unattainable goal, a carrot on a string. True perfection is constantly improving who you are. It's about being better than the man you were yesterday, learning new things, improving your character, your mind, your body, and your spirit. Don't worry about being better than everyone else or never messing up, simply work to be better day by day and you will experience joy and fulfillment.

It seems undisputable that Stephen Curry is the greatest 3-point shooter of all time, but just for fun, we go through the stats and compare his output that of Ray Allen, Reggie Miller, Larry Bird, Steve Nash, Steve Kerr, Kyle Korver, Dirk, Klay Thompson and many more sharpshooters!
Taken from the September 2017 weekend retreat on "I see you, Mara", Alistair talks about how this problematic notion of the "ego" can be understood as an excess of thinking, a slipknot round your own throat or as Reggie Ray describes it, an lethal addiction to painkillers...
In this week's Episode of Bliss and Grit we're talking about Self-Love. Is it really a part of the spiritual path? What does it actually mean to love yourself, is it the same as self esteem? And how can one experience more self love in their life? From our personal experiences to wisdom from some of our favorite teachers (Reggie Ray and Judith Blackstone- what what?!) we're opening the door to the big and beautiful topic of Self Love.

Raghu has a deep chat with Reggie Ray, one of Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche’s first American students. Reggie shares some very personal moments with Trungpa Rinpoche that illuminate some of the unique qualities of this amazing being: “In the beginning, naive me would go down to the picnic tables and see Rinpoche sitting alone and I’d sit down next to him and it was like I had just sat down next to the noon-day sun, and I was terrified of what he might do because in his space somehow whatever your little trip was it was going to be exposed.” Reggie talks about one of his most basic teachings on Somatic Meditation (interrelatedness of mind, body and spirit) and then leads a meditation.

We’re joined again by Tami Simon–founder of the spiritual media company Sounds True and senior student of Vajrayana teacher Reggie Ray. This week we ask her about her new podcast series, Insights at the Edge, where she has been interviewing many of the best spiritual teachers in the world. Jokingly, Tami said that she wanted to name the show, “Grill the Guru.” Even though that was a joke, there is some truth in it, and she uses her opportunity with these different teachers to ask them tough questions about their lives. We also ask her about some of the people that have impacted her the most during her decades of being around, and working with some of the brightest spiritual teachers of our time. She shares stories from some of her favorite luminaries, including Quaker teacher and activist Parker Palmer, Julia Butterfly Hill, Adyashanti, and finally “the living now gate,” Eckhart Tolle.
