In this enlightening conversation, I sat down with Corey Jackson, a prominent figure in mindfulness research and emotional regulation, to explore the intricate world of mindfulness and metacognitive approaches to emotion. We traversed through the realms of Buddhist psychology, the impact of mindfulness on anxiety and depression, and the importance of attentional control. What You'll Learn: Mindfulness and Metacognitive Therapy: Corey discussed the differences between traditional cognitive-behavioural models and metacognitive models. He detailed how the latter focuses on metacognitive beliefs and how adjusting these beliefs can affect anxiety and depression more effectively. This model, often overlooked, offers a promising avenue for those dealing with mental health challenges. Attention and Its Role: Corey and I delved into the critical aspect of attention in shaping our reality. Drawing parallels with William James's theories and contemporary neuroscience, we examined how controlled attention can lead to better emotional regulation. Corey emphasised the importance of knowing not just what you pay attention to, but how you attend to it, and how this awareness can transform your emotional and psychological well-being. Traditional vs. Modern Mindfulness Practices: A significant portion of our conversation focused on comparing traditional Buddhist mindfulness practices with the modern, often simplified versions popularised in the West. Corey highlighted the rich history and depth of traditional practices, which often encompass a broader system of mental cultivation beyond just breath awareness. The Importance of Judgments: We explored the role of judgments in our mental and emotional lives. Corey challenged the popular Western notion of nonjudgmental awareness, explaining how traditional practices encouraged good judgment to guide behaviour aligned with personal goals and virtues. The Role of Emotions: Corey shared insights from his work with emotional balance, particularly how emotions serve as signposts indicating important events. We discussed strategies from both Eastern and Western philosophies to manage emotions, transform emotional states, and cultivate a balanced emotional life. Key Takeaways: Mindfulness as a Multifaceted Tool Attention and Emotional Control Judgment is Crucial Traditional Practices Hold Rich Insights Emotions are Indicative, Not the Enemy Resources: Visit Corey Jackson's website for more about his work and offerings. Combining Tolle's teachings with Islamic religious practices can provide a framework for avoiding Satanic distractions and finding inner peace. Tolle emphasizes the importance of mindfulness and being present in the moment, while Allah highlighted the importance of understanding Satanic whispers and its dangers over many millennia ago. Even Islam, 1400 years ago, offered advice on how to resist them. Tolle's practices for reducing mental noise and increasing awareness are complementary to Islamic religious practices to create a comprehensive approach to avoiding Satanic distractions. For example, Tolle suggests practicing mindful meditation, which involves focusing on the present moment and observing one's thoughts and emotions without judgment. This practice is very similar to Islamic dhikr, which is the practice of repeating the name of God as a form of mindfulness and remembrance, praying 5 times a day, reciting Quran, and offering other prayers. Another key practice recommended by Tolle is observing our thoughts without getting caught up in them. This is similar to the Islamic practice of examining one's intentions and being mindful of one's thoughts, as well as seeking refuge in Allah from the whispers of Satan. Tolle also stresses the importance of focusing on the present moment, rather than dwelling in the past or worrying about the future. This idea is similar to the Islamic practice of surrendering one's trust in Allah and recognizing that the future is in His hands. Additionally, engaging in physical activity, such as exercise or gardening, can help reduce mental noise and increase awareness, which is very similar to the Islamic practice of physically performing acts of worship, such as prayer and pilgrimage. Finally, cultivating a sense of stillness and finding activities that allow one to be in the moment and calm the mind is similar to the Islamic practice of stillness and reflection during times of solitude, such as during nighttime or during retreats. Overall, Tolle's teachings are complementary to Islamic religious practices and provide a comprehensive framework for avoiding Satanic distractions and finding inner peace. Islam recognized the dangers of Satanic distractions 1400 years ago and the importance of being mindful and present in the moment, and offered guidance and practices for achieving this.

Joy invited Neil to delve deeper into how we can apply mindfulness to our every day. It is not some sort of lofty goal to achieve greater ease, space or inner peace but a practice that you can cultivate over time to feel much more comfortable in your skin, centred and in alignment. Simply put we can fuse this way of being into our DNA to truly witness our human potential and move though this time with less stress, disruption, and exhaustion as we floss our brains. It truly is the hygiene of the mind and a must listen episode. Quick story - my friend and I in our 20s went to see Deepak Chopra to "fix us" and "get" some wisdom. We came out of the event totally clueless, confused and could not understand what he was saying. Years later I discovered mindfulness and can honesty say that this simple practice is the key to living a fully integrated life and comes before all the concepts. I laugh now as we were trying to apply some kind of external wisdom band-aid well before we even fully understood ourselves. Join us now in this episode. it is one of grace, rich knowledge, practical tools and wonderful conversation. Created before a live virtual audience on Fireside. In this episode I enjoyed reconnecting with Rohan Gunatillake who is a digital innovator and entrepreneur in the field of health, wellbeing and mindfulness. He is creator of the best-selling app Buddhify, author of the book Modern Mindfulness, and host of the surprisingly good Meditative Story podcast. In addition he also works with the National Health Service in Scotland making digital technology for clinicians, care workers and citizens. Based in Glasgow, Rohan and I first met over a decade ago at the UK Innovation Foundation Nesta, where we worked together on harnessing social media for social impact. And more than most people I know, he really strives to live in the present moment and focus on what is really happening right now. I really like the way he effortlessly switches between everything from parkour, to cooking, to digital technologies, to practical mindfulness, leading to deeper insights about life, the universe and everything, all in one conversation. In particular I loved what he said about seeing a coil of rope instead of a snake, so that the impossible becomes possible. And I also really liked the bit towards the end about building thresholds, and that which connects us also divides us. Anyway I hope you enjoyed it too and if you want to find out more about Rohan and some of the things we talked about then please visit: https://rohangunatillake.com/ https://buddhify.com/ https://meditativestory.com/ http://www.mindfulnesseverywhere.io/ https://nds.nhs.scot/ https://thenewpossible.space/ To find out more about Liminal or to join our community, please visit https://www.weareliminal.co/

Now Is the Way: An Unconventional Approach to Modern Mindfulness by Cory Allen
Making mindfulness part of your daily life, especially when you’ve never done it before, can be incredibly difficult. In fact, many beginners struggle to stick with it. They get distracted by their thoughts, think that they’re not good enough at meditation, and ultimately give up before experiencing the life-enhancing benefits that are available to all of us. Cory Allen understands this well. He’s the host of the Astral Hustle podcast and author of Now Is The Way: An Unconventional Approach To Modern Mindfulness. In his book, he explores how to use mindfulness not as a means to chill out for a few minutes in the morning and at night, but a way to rewire and retrain your brain to be conscious and present all day long. Today, Cory joins the podcast to share what he’s learned from his countless conversations with leaders at the forefront of mindfulness, neuroscience, and philosophy. You’ll discover how his book addresses the complexities of modern society, technology, and the internet, none of which existed 50 years ago when so many classic texts on meditation were written. Transition, meditation, and community–you’ve heard about these before, but have you really stopped to experience them or hear all the ways they can serve you on your humble journey to greatness? Listen in as social entrepreneur Jesse Israel speaks about community-building and modern mindfulness that will not only awaken your consciousness but help in developing your whole human experience. As a co-founder of Cantora Records in his twenties, Jesse went from successfully signing multi-platinum bands and overseeing tech investment funds to transitioning into a public speaker and meditation teacher. Using his background in the music industry, Jesse created accessible points for people to get into wellness and meditation. He founded the social meditation group, Medi Club, as well as the mass meditation movement, The Big Quiet, which gathers thousands of people at legendary venues such as Madison Square Garden and The American Museum of Natural History for meditations. These events also feature rare performances from some of the most popular musicians in modern culture. Jesse’s been featured as an expert in his field in The Times, Vice, Fast Company, and more. His mission is to help leaders be exactly who they are meant to be. Where are you destined to go? Surrender to your path ahead, starting NOW! Key takeaways: The starting line. Living a full, content life seems tricky to find. If only there were warning signs on your path to let you know, ‘you’re going the wrong way!’ that could help guide you to where you’re supposed to be. Turns out, if you know where to look, the initial signs for personal growth aren’t too hard to find. Start HERE . . . [16:32]. The isolation breaker. Have you ever attended a family gathering or met up with friends after work and had the blahs afterward? That lingering loneliness that still hangs on even though people surround you? Fulfillment in social experiences can only be found when THIS is present . . . [39:29]. The identity rivalry. This week on Relationships 2.0 my guest is Beth Ann Mulligan author of The Dharma of Modern Mindfulness: Discovering the Buddhist Teachings at the Heart of Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction About the book: Deeply embedded in the practice of contemporary mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) are concepts drawn from the ancient wisdom of meditative traditions. The Dharma of Modern Mindfulness uncovers the essential Buddhist teachings at the heart of this powerful anti-stress program, enabling you to deepen your historical and spiritual understanding of MBSR and nourish your practice. Meditation and mindfulness are everywhere: in hospitals, clinics, and schools; in major medical, psychological, and scientific journals; on TV; and in popular publications—even on the cover of Timemagazine. And thankfully so—since Jon Kabat-Zinn developed MBSR, a treatment blending meditation and yoga, it has been proven effective in treating conditions like chronic pain, stress, anxiety, and depression for sufferers around the world. Lesser known, however, are the deep philosophical roots of MBSR known as the Buddhist dharma, translated as “the teachings of the Buddha.” Although they form the very foundation underlying MBSR and other mindfulness-based interventions, they often remain hidden within modern mindfulness practices. The Dharma of Modern Mindfulness illuminates these cornerstones, communicating previously esoteric teachings with language that makes them easily accessible and applicable to your complex daily life. The book follows the structure of an eight-week MBSR class, paralleling the participant’s journey with that of the Buddha for the alleviation of suffering. With real-life examples, guided reflections, and practices throughout, this book will show you the connections between the ancient wisdom of Buddhism and contemporary MBSR. Regardless of your background, status, or education, and whether you’re a practitioner, teacher, or trainer, this invitation to explore the essential Buddhist teachings at the heart of modern mindfulness—such as the four noble truths, the noble eightfold path, and the four brahmaviharas: loving-kindness, compassion, empathetic joy, and equanimity—will expand your understanding and enhance your practice, and, in doing so, connect you with your inner wisdom and deepest humanity. About the author: Beth Ann Mulligan, PA-C, graduated magna cum laude from the Duke University School of Medicine physician assistant program in 1982, and has practiced primary care medicine with diverse populations for the past thirty years. She is a certified mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) teacher and international teacher trainer for the University of Massachusetts Medical School Center for Mindfulness, as well as a certified mindful self-compassion (MSC) teacher and international teacher trainer. She teaches MBSR, MSC, and mindful eating at the Susan Samueli Center for Integrative Medicine and at InsightLA, and has been a presenter at the International Scientific Conference on Mindfulness. The Guiding Dharma teacher at Insight Community of the Desert, and a longtime senior student at Yokoji Zen Mountain Center, she leads meditation retreats across the country.
In this episode I had the distinct pleasure and honor to sit for a highly elevated chat with one of my favorite spiritual teachers and world renowned authorities on meditation, Sharon Salzberg. She started meditating the year I was born (1970), so it goes without saying that she had some profound insights with which to enlighten our listeners. Sharon has an exceptional gift for making somewhat esoteric Buddhist teachings accessible to the masses. If you’re someone who has struggled finding meaning and application in spiritual and religious teachings, but knows deep down that you are missing out on a more rich experience of life as a result, this episode might just be the bridge you need to cross the existential gap. On the other hand, if you’re a veteran meditator and feel as though you’ve got this whole ‘mindfulness’ thing down, you will no doubt be pleasantly reminded of some basic, yet easy to forget universal truths. During this interview Sharon shares endless nuggets of simple, yet powerful wisdom that she has derived from all her years of spiritual work and teaching. From hanging out with the Dalia Lama, to sitting for thousands or hours of meditation (around 15,000 by my estimate) Sharon has unlocked the secrets to happiness, fulfillment and peace in our sometimes chaotic and confusing world. If you’re ready to take your consciousness to the next level, sit back and join me and Sharon in this guided meditation, followed by a profound, yet funny and irreverent conversation about life between a student and teacher of sorts. Please take a moment to think of one person you know who could use some help embracing a spiritual perspective on life, then share this very special episode with them. Alternatively, if you feel like everyone in the world could use a bit of enlightenment, go the extra mile by posting this show to Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter. You’ll be doing me, Sharon, yourself, and the world a great service. May whatever you call god bless you, Luke Topics Discussed on Today's Episode: We talk about the fact that she’s been meditating exactly as long as I’ve been alive What it was like for her to travel to India for her first 10-day Vipassana meditation, and why she went the route of the buddhist tradition, while so many of her contemporaries leaned toward Hindu-based teachings Why she never chose to take on a special spiritual name, or wear guru costumes, and how she has managed to avoid the trappings of a spiritual ego The value in taking a ‘householders’ approach to spirituality Then Sharon treats us to a short ‘idiots guide to Buddhism’ where she breaks down the origins of the tradition and some of its teachers Why she still chooses to live in NYC some of the time, and what value a big city holds for spiritual growth Her views on social media and device addiction The fine line between making a positive contribution to the world and being a fanatical activist How she has discovered the path to freedom from the mind, and why she’s devoted her life to teaching it The fact that in life pain is inevitable, but suffering is optional We explore the idea that mindfulness is not passive, but rather surrendered action How to become free of negative attachments What is the hungry ghost, and how we can avoid being trapped by our desires How reincarnation effects our lives Sharon’s views on the value of the 12 Steps Program We talk about Real Love, her 10th book and what role compassion toward ourselves and others plays in our lives Lastly Sharon gives us her prediction on where the current spiritual movement is taking us, and how she’s hopeful for the future state of mankind’s evolution Lifestyle recommendations For MORE about this Episode WATCH IT on YouTube!
