In the 18th century Vitus Bering went from Russia's east coast and landed in America. Over the next 150 years, Russia colonised more and more land, first taking Alaska and then working down America's west coast, eventually claiming areas as far south as California. Whilst this venture did fail, this failure was not inevitable. Listen as William and Anita are joined by Owen Matthews to discuss the most improbable story of Russia and its (almost successful) attempts to colonise large parts of America. Vitus Bering was an explorer who proved that Asia and North America are not joined by land. In 1728 Bering sailed from the Pacific to the Arctic Ocean through a narrow passage that now bears his name—the Bering Strait. On a second voyage, Bering explored Alaska and the Aleutian Islands. On July 13, 1728, Bering sailed from the Kamchatka Peninsula in Siberia, eastern Russia. In August his ship passed through the Bering Strait into the Arctic Ocean. Bering concluded that North America was not joined to Asia. Before he could explore further, bad weather forced him to return to Russia. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/juliusmanuel/message

The Gyptians and Lyra embark for Trollesund - a town on the coast of Lapland where witch consuls, aeronauts and bears are all to be found. We learn more about what your daemon says about you and about a mysterious prophesy concerning Lyra and the fate of us all.Amy says seamen a lot, Iain attempts a bear's voice and neither of us can pronounce Hatuumaasaari. Pizzly bears abound.------Here is a picture of a scarlet ibis - the most likely flame-red bittern-sized bird from our world (credit: Magda Ehlers via Pexel)Iain offends all Scottish people by disbelieving that ‘Scots' exists. As proof of this language being alive and well (and definitely not just because Amy is writing the notes this week), here's a wee link tae ‘Scots Wikipaedia', which includes pages on Harry Potter, Haggis and a short section on Sir Philip himself. You can read this mysterious ‘History of the Alethiometer' here, and decide for yourselves if this is canon or not...For more on Guilio Camillo and his concept of the Theatre of Memory, check out this interesting article. You can read more about Giordano Bruno's fascinating life here.In this episode, we talk about the various items on display at the Pitt Rivers Museum from the Aleutian islands. You can see some pictures of the items on display here, such as the astounding waterproof coat made from seal intestine. Some more information on New Denmark can be found here.In terms of theories about why parts of the Americas are called ‘New Denmark' in Lyra's world, we discussed Vitus Bering and Peter Freuchen. This week, Iain reveals some ridiculous names for polar bear/grizzly bear hybrids. And - lest we forget - Farder Coram categorically doesn't look at explosions.------Music by: Jaymen Persaudwww.thedarkmaterialpodcast.comTwitter: @darkmaterialpodInstagram: @thedarkmaterialpodcastFacebook: www.facebook.com/thedarkmaterialpodcast

Steller's sea cow (Hydrodamalis gigas) was one of the most surprising, dramatic and generally amazing animals to have shared the world with modern humans. To tell its story is going to take two episodes - and this first of them, to be honest, doesn't even feature the sea cow itself. But it does feature Vitus Bering and Georg Steller, two men who would share with that gigantic creature an extraordinary tale of exploration, survival, death and extinction. Oh, and there's a load of other amazing wildlife involved as well ... Following the expedition of Vitus Bering in 1741, the Russian Empire planted its flag firmly in North America. With riches in mind, traders and trappers from Siberia soon found a wealth of furs and opportunity in the great wilderness of Alaska. Although the Russians prospered as North America’s fourth colonial superpower, its unfettered exploitation of the native Aleutic peoples backfired in the form of open rebellion. From 1763 to 1804, Russian North America was plagued by warfare, and the strains of a globalized economy began to take its toll on the tribal societies of Alaska. On this episode we discuss the rebellions of Russia’s secret North American empire.
