In life, relationships and business, big pivots are preceded by an internal pull towards something new. Your intuition is telling you it's time to complete a cycle and follow the surge of expansion into the unknown. There's an inner knowing that it's time to leap into what's next. This creates a rollercoaster of emotions - on one hand, you feel the peace and clarity that comes with honoring yourself. On the other hand, you have to deal with the fall out of parting ways with something you've been doing. Here's the thing: the back and forth, the doubt, the tears and the joy and expansion are all part of the pivot. In order to complete the arc and land gently in the new thing, we have to honor the messiness. We have to let the cycle complete organically. This was the journey Jesse Israel found himself on. On two occasions, he's felt that inner pull to something new, and as scary as it was, he honored it. How did tapping into his intuition trigger a transition? How do we move through a transition by letting intuition lead the way? In this episode, the meditation leader, speaker, leadership coach and founder of The Big Quiet tells us what the process of pivoting was like, and how he was able to move through it with grace. There's so much power and potency in honoring that intuition. The wavering and back and forth was so necessary because it helped me understand even more why the gut is the way. -Jesse Israel Things You'll Learn In This Episode -Make your inner knowing louder than external pressure Very often, pivots push us in the opposite direction of what we've been doing for years. How do we lean into our intuitive calling to transition when the external world is [loudly] telling us to stay where we are? -The turmoil (and triumph) of transitions Pivots bring up doubt and we constantly go back and forth on the decision, even when we know it's right. How do we cultivate trust and find joy in the not knowing and emotional ups and downs? -Let the cycle end organically Completing cycles is really hard - so hard in fact, that people tend to resist the change. Why does this only lead to more pain and difficulty? Guest Bio Jesse is a meditation leader, keynote speaker and leadership coach known for founding the mass meditation movement The Big Quiet. While most of Jesse Israel's buddies at NYU were out drinking at keg parties, he had his sights set a bit higher. Jesse started a music label... from his dorm room... and then signed the band MGMT. Sounds cool, right? Maybe... but it also left him feeling so much pressure that the anxiety became almost debilitating. He knew he had to seek a solution. This began Jesse's quest for inner peace... a journey that would ultimately lead him to start a global meditation movement, design an experiential event called "The Big Quiet" which saw over 150,000 people through its doors, and eventually... go on tour with Oprah Winfrey and share stages with the likes of Deepak Chopra. If you've ever dealt with stress, anxiety, imposter syndrome, racing thoughts, or had the thought that "meditation just isn't for you" (spoiler alert: it is probably easier than you think) then today's episode is a must-listen.************Make sure to follow Jamie @jamiehess on Instagram for news & updates, and visit our companion Instagram account @gratitudeology for a sneak peek into the personal moments discussed on the show.************Thank you to Jesse Israel for sharing your truth with us today. We want to master ourselves and help others master themselves through our work. The result is that we often look at meditation as a battle with your mind. But your mind will always win that battle. In reality, meditation is about working in connection with your thinking mind, which ultimately leads to profoundly settled mental states and the ability to tap into a deeper understanding of yourself and the world.[12:53] - When Pride is a Good ThingWhen you're proud of what you do, you do it betterWe tend to equate our self-worth with how we feel we're performing in our various “roles,” in life and in our careers. Are we succeeding in business? Are we excelling as speakers? But when we can let go of this aspirational focus and simply be proud of ourselves for doing work we feel has value, we can let go of these insecurities that often put up barriers between us and our audience. When we do that, we let go of a highly emotional state of decision-making and become a more powerful operator of the facets of our lives.[14:38] - The Subject They Don't Teach You in SchoolWhy connection is as essential as math or physicsJessica highlights the way that caring for ourselves, caring for others, and caring for the planet make up the ingredients of a fulfilled life — and yet we don't teach any of these things in any level of formal education. That's why so many people misunderstand what it means to be connected to the people and world around us, and to ourselves. As speakers, the ability to connect with people in a genuine way is absolutely essential. Formal training on human connection can benefit us all immensely.[19:29] - There's (Literally) No Time Like the PresentWhy focusing on the present moment is a good long-term moveBeing “grounded” or “present” doesn't just sound nice. It's a very real way to refocus yourself when you become obsessively focused on what comes next. Light recommends making a quick mental list of ten things you're grateful for. Gratitude is a cheat code for presence, he says, that instantly grounds us in the things around us for which we're grateful. Because gratitude is so present-focused — “I'm grateful for X, Y and Z that I have right now.” — it breaks us out of the rhythm of constantly thinking about the future.RESOURCES:[1:51] The Big QuietFollow Jesse Israel:WebsiteInstagramTwitterFollow Light Watkins:WebsiteTwitterInstagramFollow Jessica Encell Coleman:WebsiteInstagramFollow Josh Linkner:FacebookLinkedInInstagramTwitterYouTubeABOUT MIC DROP:Hear from the world's top thought leaders and experts, sharing tipping point moments, strategies, and approaches that led to their speaking career success. In this episode, I'm joined by my friend and inspiration, Jesse Israel — meditation leader, keynote speaker and leadership coach known for founding the mass meditation movement, The Big Quiet. Jesse shares challenging moments from his life that informed his transition from the music to meditation industry, and how an intuitive pull to create a shared experience evolved into gratitude and a collective purpose. Named "The Meditation Expert" by The New York Times, Jesse has led some of the largest meditations on earth — having toured arenas with Oprah Winfrey and co-hosted international broadcasts with Deepak Chopra. An Audible Originals best-selling creator and a Forbes Next 1000 recipient, Jesse has collaborated on meditation projects with Grammy-winning rappers, coached the world's most influential entrepreneurs and keynoted at Fortune 500s around the globe. Prior to his work at The Big Quiet, Jesse ran a tech fund and record label called Cantora (acquired 2016), where he sourced seed investments in companies now worth billions of dollars and signed multi-platinum bands like MGMT.Jesse and I discuss how he went from an NYU dorm room to sold out arenas with Oprah, the importance of listening to our bodies, and how acknowledging the progress in ourselves is vital in order to achieve things in the world. "Being an anxiety warrior is about finding a loving relationship with my anxiety." -Jesse Israel On today's episode, Abby and Margot are thrilled and honored to welcome Jesse Israel to the podcast. Jesse is a social entrepreneur, meditation leader and former record label executive known for founding the mass meditation movement The Big Quiet. In 2020 Jesse was invited to go on tour with Oprah Winfrey and WW to speak at and lead mass meditations at sold-out arenas throughout the US. He's been featured in Forbes, The New York Times, and the WSJ along with several other leading publications. As a kid, Jesse only noticed performance anxiety during sports with adults watching him. He shares how in many ways he felt as if he'd peaked in his middle school years because it was a time of his life when he felt free. Free to create and be a leader without fear and self doubt. Then, after being part of a prank gone wrong... everything changed. His anxiety grew, and as he grew new challenges proved more difficult because of it. In his early 20's after achieving wild success in the music business he began to have panic attacks which led him to realize that it was time to make massive shifts in his life. With therapy, meditation, and a supportive community he was able to help himself so that in turn he could help others to create massive shifts in their life. He offers the Warriors many useful tips for learning to form a loving and embracing relationship to anxiety, and see it as a teacher rather than an enemy. As always, the Warriors have a blast getting to know Jesse in lightning round and he shares a fantastic win of the week! Jesse Israel believes that the time to promote cultural change is now. His journey toward meditation maven is singular: from founder of a record label at 23, with multi-platinum bands, to founder of The Big Quiet, a global meditation movement that brings together massive groups for moments of transformational silence. Today, everyone, from Oprah and Deepak Chopra to many Fortune 100 CEOs, embraces the visionary practitioner's transformational work. In this episode, Jesse shares why he believes authenticity, connectedness, and joyful self-acceptance are what's contemporary now. To him, the power of mindfulness can push back against the noise, stress, and compulsive need for external validation that presses in on so many—particularly those in creative or entrepreneurial sectors. His heart-centered coaching approach is about unleashing wholeness and sending out global ripples of sustained, positive cultural energy, helping individuals tap into their power and potential, and highlighting the importance of finding inner joy and fulfillment in one's life and work. What's contemporary now? "What's contemporary now is people … [discovering] what makes them feel most alive. It's so critical that we live in a place of aliveness because the world really needs it right now." Episode Highlights: Starting: From launching a successful record label out of a dorm room at NYU to inner turmoil, then meditation as a source of relief. We are not alone: Backstage meditation circles Jesse started at concerts gave him a profound understanding of our shared human fragility. The Big Quiet: Jesse applied lessons learned in developing popular cultural events to create community—a space for people "to slow down and talk about real stuff." Gathering momentum: Iterating in small gatherings, Jesse began to shape his growing community in response to people's needs and wants. The Big Quiet grew and took off organically from there. Group v. individual: Larger group meditations deepen the practice, creating a richer sense of togetherness within the silence. Just the facts: In areas where mass meditations occur, decreases in levels of crime have been reported, along with a generally positive ripple effect. The Musical Element: Crystal bowls and other sound vibrations give practitioners a container for a deeper state of consciousness. Notable performances in the quiet, captive moments after a mass meditation infuse the community with a sense of heart-centered connectedness. The changing landscape: There are tectonic shifts that humans are experiencing in the information, digital age. We use mindfulness to strengthen our nervous systems and reconnect with a primal, tribal sense of well-being. In the corporate world: Meditation can open up new channels of creativity, increase response times for problem-solving, foster intuitive team-building, cultivate more personal joy and discovery, and enable enlightened leadership. Step-by-step leadership: Step 1: Meditate to reduce stress and emotional blocks. Step 2: In the quiet, get clear about how to tap into full power and potential. Step 3: Turn outward, leveraging personal gifts and positive impact. The butterfly effect: Leaders who practice self-love and recognize joyful purpose become vessels that inspire change and transformation in the workplace and beyond. Grounded in abundance: Anything is possible when we lean into intention, our unique gifts, and our lived experience. Easing the grip: Meditation and self-compassion shift us from a place of scarcity and fear towards being okay with the fact that there are things we can't control. Unlearning the messages: It's essential to unhitch our gaze (and sense of self-worth) from a high-stress, low-value cultural focus on empty external validation.

Jesse Israel is a social entrepreneur, meditation leader, former record label executive, and founder of The Big Quiet, a mass meditation movement. He's found a way to utilize his experience with concerts and festivals, and turn down the volume with his large-scale community meditation events. The Big Quiet is all about giving people permission to look inward, talk about real stuff, and do it in a context that feels accessible. In other words, it's far from your local Buddhist center. Jesse shares how he discovered meditation after going through a period of significant burnout at the age of 23. We discuss the benefits of breathwork, common misconceptions about meditation, and why leaders benefit so much from this practice. Jesse opens up about what happened with his vision and direction for The Big Quiet once the pandemic hit, and how he's been able to find joy within himself rather than external validation because of that experience. We also touch on his approach to social media and exciting projects that are really lighting him up right now. Today, Jesse and I talk about: The physical manifestations of being in a constant state of stress How meditation helps Jesse connect deeper with himself and other people What inspired Jesse to start The Big Quiet Jesse's response to people who say they can't meditate The correlation between meditation and leadership What it was like to be dubbed ‘Oprah's meditation guy' Finding a healthy balance with social media and screen time Where Jesse is focusing his energy when it comes to expanding The Big Quiet “I believe that anybody that is giving themselves in a meaningful and good way to the world is creating a ripple effect.” #MAYFAIRWORLD Get In Touch With Jesse Follow Jesse on Instagram HERE Follow The Big Quiet on Instagram HERE Check out The Big Quiet HERE MERCH: We are offering 20% off with the code MAYFAIRWORLD.
