She's back – after Labor secured a thumping majority in this month's federal election, Catherine King has been reappointed to her portfolio as minister for transport and infrastructure. In her first term, the minister released an Aviation White Paper, pushed ahead with reforms to Sydney slots, backed the new Western Sydney Airport, ended the war over Melbourne's airport rail link, and pledged to save Rex from going under – so what can we expect this time around? Adam and Jake look at what the government – and the minister – might prioritise for aviation over the next three years and potentially beyond. Plus, Australia's busiest day for air travel in five years – and we promise we'll stop talking about America eventually, but seriously, what's the go with America?
Saunders International Ltd Managing Director and CEO Mark Benson talked with Proactive at the AIM's Small and Midcap Conference about the company's strong momentum, recent project wins and the strategic expansion into defense and infrastructure sectors. Benson highlighted Saunders' transformation from a tank constructor to a multi-disciplined, end-to-end engineering and construction provider. “We've diversified and become a multi-disciplined business… Now some of the projects we can do end-to-end,” he said, referencing the company's work on the **Western Sydney Airport**, where it completed all elements from fuel tank construction to apron pipeline delivery. He also noted Saunders' acquisition strategy as a driver of growth, enabling delivery of complex infrastructure through internal capabilities. Notable acquisitions include piping, civil infrastructure, and automation companies, helping the company expand its offering and grow organically and through M&A. Benson discussed the company's extensive work in the defense sector, including the **Larrakeyah Defense Precinct** in Darwin, where Saunders handled the complete marine diesel infrastructure — from delivery to ship fueling — a capability he said sets the company apart. “Typically it's done through 3 to 6 contractors. Now we can do that end to end.” The company now sees a $2.3 billion pipeline of directly addressable opportunities, with up to $4.8 billion in total defense-related fuel infrastructure upgrades anticipated across the next decade. Saunders is actively tendering for $580 million of that. Benson said Saunders' unique value in defense projects includes not just technical delivery but risk reduction for government clients. “In defense, it's not all about price. Sometimes price evaluation is only 30%. It's about de-risking the project for the Commonwealth.” Visit Proactive's YouTube channel for more company interviews, and don't forget to like the video, subscribe to the channel, and turn on notifications to stay updated. #SaundersInternational #ASXStocks #InfrastructureDevelopment #DefenseContracts #WesternSydneyAirport #Larrakeyah #EngineeringProjects #FuelInfrastructure #MarkBenson #ASXConference #ProactiveInvestors #ConstructionNews #ProjectPipeline

While its website, filled with glossy renders of 737 MAX 8s, promised to “carve out a unique niche” in Australia's aviation sector, a winding-up application filed against it in Victoria last week has raised questions about whether it would ever actually get off the ground. Adam and Jake discuss whether Koala's lofty ambitions of “creating a lasting impact on the industry” are over before they even began. He shares with Greg his plans on opening a carbon neutral airport with renewable energy, low wastage levels and plenty of recycling.Graham discusses the technologies he wants to completely immerse into the new Western Sydney airport with newer more advanced technologies than currently available at Kingsford Smith Airport which will ultimately help create a more relaxed and leisurely experience upon arriving at the airport. He shares with us his plan on working with Uber Elevate to create what sounds like “flying cars” to assist with congestion as well as time. Adding to Uber Elevate, he shares his vision of the airport having a strong public transport presence which again, will help lessen congestion and reduce pollution. He also stresses the importance of an airport being more than just an airport, his key goal is to create an Aerotropolis, which he defines as an aviation city. We were joined on the Australian Aviation podcast by Lee de Winton who is the chief executive of Sydney Metro Airports which encompasses both Bankstown and Camden airports. de Willton started out in the Royal Navy as a radar plotter and eventually went on to earn a commission and become a fully qualified Air Traffic Controller both in the Royal Navy and eventually in the RAAF. Here in the Sydney basin there is a lot happening with the development of the new Western Sydney Airport and now with the release of the master plan for Bankstown Airport, so it was timely to catch up with de Wilton to discuss what the master plan means, what we can expect for the future and how the community can offer feedback and get involved. Listen in as de Wilton shares with us what we can expect from the master plan and what the future holds for Australia’s largest and busiest general aviation airport. If you’d like to offer some feedback on the master plan you can do so by: Visiting: https://www.sydneymetroairports.com.au Emailing: MP2019@SMAirports.com.au Writing to: PO BOX 6450 Wetherill Park NSW 1851
Today on the podcast we are joined by Graham Millett who is the CEO of the new Western Sydney Airport. As listeners you would know it has been a very long road to breaking ground on the Badgerys Creek location. In fact a second the second Sydney airport was first flagged in the 1940’s. It was talked about, planned and then shelved by a succession of politicians and their governments. After facing the worst possible headlines and statements from politicians and journalists such as ‘The second airport will never be built’ and ‘Sydney doesn’t need a second airport’ ground was finally broken on September 24th 2018 and construction began on the much needed second Sydney airport began. As you can appreciate this is a massive infrastructure project and new airports like these don’t come around often. In fact, it is not described as once in a lifetime but more as a once in a hundred years type project. The roads, the rail and the drone planning coupled alongside the Aerotropolis is incredible, and the jobs that are created as a result can only be a good thing for the NSW economy. Listen in as Graham gives us some background to the project and how we can expect it to roll out initially when it opens in 2026 and what the future looks like all the way out into the 2080’s.
